[0820b29] "At that time, in the city of Heavenly India (天竺 [tian zhu]) Vārāṇasī (波羅㮈 [bo luo nai]), there were also five hundred merchant householders who were friends with Yaśodhara (耶輸陀 [ye shu tuo]) when he was at home. They had gone to the sea to collect treasures and had returned home at the same time. They all asked about Yaśodhara's (耶輸陀 [ye shu tuo]) whereabouts. After they asked, they heard that Yaśodhara (耶輸陀 [ye shu tuo]) was now practicing brahmacarya (梵行 [fan xing]) with that great Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]). When they heard this, they said to each other, 'That brahmacarya (梵行 [fan xing]) must be excellent, and its teachings must be superior to others. If it were not so, how could the virtuous young man Yaśodhara (耶輸陀 [ye shu tuo]) have changed his mind and gone to that great Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]) to practice brahmacarya (梵行 [fan xing])? We should also go together to that great Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]) and seek to practice brahmacarya (梵行 [fan xing]).'

[0820c19] "At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) traveled to other countries and returned to the city of Śrāvastī (舍婆提 [she po ti]), where he stayed in the Jeta Grove (祇陀林 [qi tuo lin]) monastery. At that time, the elder Yaśodhara (耶輸陀 [ye shu tuo]), after a long time and after the vassa (夏 [xia]; rainy season retreat) had ended, went with the five hundred bhikṣu (比丘 [bi qiu]) monastics. When the visiting bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]) arrived at Jeta Grove (祇陀園 [qi tuo yuan]), the resident bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]) were either taking alms bowls or bundles of clothes into the rooms, which caused a great noise and clamor.

[0821a13] "At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) said to the visiting bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]), 'You bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]), why are you making such a loud noise, like worldly people quarreling and yelling? Your voices are like those of fishermen competing for fish and shouting at each other. You bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]), go back to your original places. You are not allowed to live here with me. I will drive you away.' The five hundred newly arrived visiting bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]) heard the Buddha's words and said to the Buddha, 'As the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) commands.' The five hundred visiting bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]), having heard the Buddha's words, prostrated themselves at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and left. They took their robes and bowls and left the monastery. They went to a river called Bhaddiyā (婆羅瞿摩帝 [po luo qu mo di]; Sui translation: beautiful master (秀媚主 [xiu mei zhu])) and stayed on its bank. They practiced diligently day and night without rest. They did not lie down or sleep in the first or last watch of the night. They vigorously cultivated the Path and sought the attainment of the Dharma that assists the Path, so they were diligent. They were diligent without rest and without ceasing. Before long, what they were striving for was accomplished. Those virtuous young men, having left their homes with true faith, were able to accomplish the supreme brahmacarya (梵行 [fan xing]) and attain it. They saw the Dharma for themselves, realized the various psychic powers, and were able to cut off all the fetters (結 [jie]), declaring, 'Birth and death are exhausted. We have attained the reward of brahmacarya (梵行 [fan xing]). What needed to be done has been done. We will not receive a future life again.' They realized and knew this for themselves. Those elders all became Arhats (阿羅漢 [a luo han]) and their minds were well liberated, without fear.

That venerable great Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]), in the morning, when the sun was in the east, put on his robe and held his alms bowl. He slowly walked to the city of Vārāṇasī (波羅㮈 [bo luo nai]) to beg for food. The man saw the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) from afar. He was dignified and composed, his movements were upright and calm, his steps were steady and unwavering, he looked straight ahead, and his movements were careful, neither hurried nor slow. He stood and looked up, a sight that people liked to see. His clothes were appropriate, and his inner and outer demeanor were solemn. When the man saw this, his mind became pure, and he felt great joy. He immediately took the food and offered it to the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]). At that time, the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) thought, 'I have now received various delicious foods as offerings, but the time to eat has not yet come. I should now temporarily calm my mind and meditate.' After thinking this, he walked to one side, went to the river bank, and sat down under a tree. He sat cross-legged, focused his thoughts, and his body remained still, silent, and single-minded, without shaking or moving. He stayed there like that.

[0823a09] "At that time, the venerable Nāgarśikhī (那伽羅尸棄 [na jia luo shi qi]) Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) remained in the world as long as he could and then entered parinirvāṇa (般涅槃 [ban nie pan]). The man and all his family gathered together, and when they saw the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) enter parinirvāṇa (般涅槃 [ban nie pan]), they took the body of the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) and cremated it with proper offerings. They built a stūpa (舍利 [she li]) for the relics, with a spire and an inverted bowl on top of the stūpa (塔 [ta]). They hung various precious bells, banners, canopies, powdered incense, and burning incense, and lit lamps to make offerings.

[0823a15] "At that time, after the man had made these offerings for some time, he left home in the Dharma of the Parivrājaka (波梨婆羅闍 [bo li po luo du]). After leaving home, he lived and sat in that same forest. In the morning, he would often go into the city of Vārāṇasī (波羅㮈 [bo luo nai]) to beg for food. One day, when he was begging for food in Vārāṇasī (波羅㮈 [bo luo nai]), he saw a woman's corpse that had died of a serious illness on one side. Her body was starting to turn blue and rot, with maggots burrowing and eating all over it. He stood close, looked at it carefully, and developed the thought of impurity in his mind. He then left. He focused his mind on the impurity of the body, and the thought did not leave him. He thought about it again and again, and through his diligent efforts, he attained the mind of the four dhyānas (四禪 [si chan]). He then made a vow again: 'In a future life, may I meet the Buddha Śākyamuni (釋迦佛 [shi jia fu]) when he appears in the world.
