[0740b26] "At that time, Yasodhara (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]) cried out loudly. In anger and with scolding, she used various words to criticize Channa (車匿 [che ni]), saying: 'Channa! I am a young woman, and in the middle of the night, I was deep in sleep, unaware of anything. Where did you take my beloved and desired holy husband, the lord of my heart? Channa! How far away is it from here? My holy lord, the good and great man, you and the horse, the three of you went together, but Channa (車匿 [che ni]) and Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]), only the two of you, have come back alone, standing before me. I do not see my beloved holy lord. This is why my body and mind are trembling. Channa! You are not a good person. You did not benefit me. Channa! I must say, even the most cruel and angry enemy would not cause such harm as you have done to me today. Channa! Since you are my refuge, you should have protected me and nourished me. Why did you, seeing that I was confused in my sleep in the middle of the night, secretly steal my holy lord and take him away? Channa! You are now my greatest enemy. You have already completed what you intended to do, so why do you need to be remorseful and weep? You should wipe your face. Why are you pretending to be sad and shedding tears from your eyes? Channa! Your evil deed has been completed, so there is no need for you to mourn. Channa! I took you as a good friend of my holy husband, who was supposed to control his comings and goings, letting him go only when it was appropriate and stopping him when it was not; but instead, you went along with him, allowing my holy lord to go out at his own will. Channa! What use are you to me? Now that you have done this evil deed, you should be happy. I know that you have gained a great reward and great fortune. Channa! In this world, people would rather take a wise person as an enemy than a foolish person as a friend. Channa! Although you were a friend of my husband, you did not think carefully about what you were doing. Why is this? Channa! You have now done an unbeneficial thing to my family, so you should be very happy. Channa! All these high and adorned palaces, like a procession of clouds, filled with various garlands, treasures, and jewels, are now empty because of you.' Then, she said a gatha (偈 [ji]) to Channa (車匿 [che ni]):
"'People would rather be close to a wise enemy, than take a foolish person as a friend.
Because you acted without thinking, my whole family is now suffering.'

[0740c25] "At that time, Yasodhara (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]), having said this gatha (偈 [ji]), spoke to Channa (車匿 [che ni]) again, saying: 'Channa! How can my heart not be sorrowful? In the past, if my husband was opposite me, these courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]), with skin as white as snow and lips as red as vermilion, who were lovely and unparalleled in their uprightness, would have to take off their garlands and wonderful clothes, and enjoy various pleasures with him. Who would have known that in one morning, they would become widows? Because there is no master, their tears flow like water day and night, and their weeping and wailing are constant and unending. Channa! Also, this Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]) has been my enemy for a long time. It did not benefit me. It saw that I was asleep in the middle of the night, unaware, and carried my beloved lord out of the city. The deed of this horse is extremely evil. Why is it now standing before me, whining in pain, and making its voice fill the great king's palace? When it first took my holy son out, why was this evil horse silent and walked without a sound? If it had whinnied like this at the beginning of its departure, people would have heard its sound and woken up, and I would not have seen such great distress. Even if this evil horse had been shot through with an arrow, or killed with a stick, it should not have gone out and headed to the mountains and forests. Therefore, this horse did not benefit my family. It was only out of fear of a few whips and sticks that it took my beloved and most excellent holy husband and headed out to the mountain thicket. Now, because my palace has no master, the halls, rooms, villages, cities, national capitals, streets, towers, windows, gates, railings, right-angled langgan (琅玕 [lang gan]), and crescent-shaped palaces, which were wonderful, superior, and gorgeous, are all empty. Because of this evil horse king Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]), my royal inner chamber is like a wilderness, and when I look around, there is nowhere I can find joy.' When Yasodhara (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]) was speaking these various bitter, painful, sorrowful, and sobbing words, it was unbearable to hear and see, and she fainted for a moment. When Channa (車匿 [che ni]) heard Yasodhara (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]) say this, he lowered his head, held his breath, put his palms together, and wept greatly. He replied to the holy son's consort, Yasodhara (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]), saying: 'Consort, you should not criticize Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]), nor should you be angry and scold me. I am not at fault. Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]) and I are truly not guilty. The night the consort's holy husband first left, I created many obstacles, such as shouting. At that time, I shouted loudly at the consort, using various words, saying: "Great consort, wake up quickly! Great consort, wake up quickly! Tonight, the consort's beloved husband wants to take me and Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]) away." I held a handful of hair and showed it to Yasodhara (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]), hair by hair, saying: "This is the hair that I pulled out of a certain courtesan (婇女 [cai nu]) at that time. This is the hair of a courtesan (婇女 [cai nu]) named so-and-so. This is the hair of a courtesan (婇女 [cai nu]) named so-and-so." I called out each name and told her. At that time, she was not aware of it, and all the other courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) were also like this. This horse, Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]), also created obstacles when the holy son left. It whinnied more than a thousand times and beat the ground with its hooves, refusing to move forward or backward. It also opened its jaw and snorted with a thunderous roar. The sound of this horse's whinnying could be heard for half a yojana (由旬 [you xun]), and the sound of its hooves could be heard for one krosa (拘盧舍 [ju lu she]). At that time, I shouted to the consort: "Your beloved is leaving tonight." The consort and the other courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) did not notice these sounds themselves, and it was also due to the divine power of the devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) that the sounds were hidden and could not be heard. Great consort, you must know! Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]) and I truly did not dare to take the holy son away. How could the holy son have taken my words to heart? If the holy son had acted according to my words, this would never have happened.' He then said a gatha (偈 [ji]) to the consort:
"'I cannot bear these tears now, I put my palms together, lower my head, and speak to you again.
Consort, you really should not scold the horse, nor should you be angry at me.'

[0741b13] "'Great consort! I also knew in the past that King Suddhodana (淨飯大王 [jing fan da wang]) had given a strict order that all attendants should be extremely careful and guard the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi]). Although I knew of this order beforehand, I was not in control. The power of the devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) was strong, confusing my mind, and I could not do what I wanted to. What the holy son did was all due to the power of the devas (天神 [tian shen]), who called out for him to leave home.

They were all in a state of sleep and unaware. When the holy son first left the palace gate, it was like the rising sun, emitting a great pure light that broke all darkness. At that time, I knew this was done by the devas (諸天 [zhu tian]). Great consort! At that time, when the holy son left the city and was on his way, I was at the very front, walking on foot. At that time, my body did not feel tired. Great consort! When this horse, Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]), was walking on the road, its feet did not touch the ground, as if someone was carrying it. [0741c03] "At that time, the great consort Yasodhara (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]) lay on the ground, thinking for a moment. With various words, she wept and cried, saying: 'Alas, my lord! Why is it that I, who act according to the Dharma and am obedient to my husband, have been abandoned by you? You wanted to seek the Dharma, but there is no true Dharma there, because you cannot follow the Dharma. Alas, my lord! Did you not hear that in the past, when kings wanted to go to the mountains to seek the Dharma, they took their wives and children with them? Those kings did not obstruct the holy path and were still able to achieve it. Alas, my lord! Did you not know that there is such a Dharma? People even shave their heads with their wives and leave home to cultivate the Way, diligently practicing asceticism. They offer their good horses as sacrifices to the devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) and hold the wuzhehui (無遮會 [wu zhe hui]), and in the future, the two of them will receive the most excellent rewards. If you know the Dharma spoken in the Vedas (韋陀論 [wei tuo lun]), why are you stingy with the Dharma with me alone and do not practice it with me? Alas, it is a waste to have been born a human. If you know that there is a relationship of kindness and love with a woman in the world, why did you abandon it? You want to be born in the Trayastrimsa (三十三天 [san shi san tian]) and lust for the Deva (玉女 [yu nu]) maidens. My heart now sees such a thing; what is there to desire about those deva (天 [tian]) maidens? What is so upright and proper about them? What are the five desires and joyous things? If you do not desire their happiness, you have abandoned this royal position and the merits of your divine power, and also us and the other courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]). After abandoning us, you have left home and entered a quiet mountain forest, wanting to practice asceticism. I will not seek the reward of heaven, nor do I envy the bodies of the deva (天 [tian]) maidens. My heart is content. I have the power to stay here without being born in heaven, and to practice asceticism in this very place. I make this wish: "Whether in the human world or in heaven, I only wish to serve a lord like you." Your mind is determined and as unyielding as leather and stone. If you abandon us and enter the quiet mountain forest, my heart will be the same, firm and unmoving, like stone, the most solid and real. If I am a woman without a husband like this, seeing my own master leave home and go to the mountain forest, leaving me lonely and alone in an empty room, how can my heart not be broken?' She then said a gatha (偈 [ji]):
"'My body and mind are now extremely firm, like iron and stone, without any difference.
The master has abandoned the empty palace and entered the mountains. Why is my heart not broken?'
