[0739b18] "At that time, Mahaprajapati (摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti]) and Gautami (瞿多彌 [qu duo mi]) saw the bright pearl from the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi])'s topknot, the horizontal knife and mani (摩尼 [mo ni]) jewel-decorated fly whisk from the parasol, other garlands, the horse king Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]), and Channa (車匿 [che ni]), etc. Having seen these, their hearts were greatly terrified. They raised both hands, beat their bodies, and with sorrow, asked Channa: 'Where is my beloved son, Siddhartha (悉達多 [xi da duo])? You returned by yourself.' Channa replied: 'Great Queen of the kingdom! Siddhartha (悉達太子 [xi da tai zi]), the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi]), has renounced the five desires for the sake of seeking the Way. He has left home and entered the mountains, far from his relatives, shaved his head, put on dyed robes, and is contemplating ascetic practices.' When Mahaprajapati (摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti]) heard these words from Channa, she was like a mother cow who had lost her calf, weeping and wailing uncontrollably. When Mahaprajapati (摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti]) heard the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi])'s words from Channa, it was the same. She immediately raised both hands, her heart terrified and broken, and she cried out loudly: 'Alas, my son! Alas, my son!' Tears streamed down her face, her body trembled all over, and she suddenly fainted, fell to the ground, and writhed in the dirt, like a fish out of water on dry land, jumping in pain and distress. Mahaprajapati (摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti]) was also like this, falling to the ground and writhing, sobbing as she spoke, and asked Channa: 'Channa! I do not see that I have any fault in my body, or mistakes in my mind or mouth, that would make me owe you anything. So why did you suddenly take my son and abandon him in the wilderness, like a felled tree? You placed my son in that forest, letting him live alone amidst the terror of various evil insects and beasts. You abandoned him and left, showing no pity for my son, and turned your back on him?' Channa replied: 'Great Lady of the kingdom! Your servant did not dare to abandon the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi]). Lady! The Tathagata (太子 [tai zi]) abandoned your servant himself. The Tathagata (太子 [tai zi]) entrusted me with the horse king Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]) and all the garlands, instructing me to return quickly to the palace, because he feared that the great lady's heart would become sorrowful, so that you could be at peace and without worry.' At that time, the courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) in the palace all wept and cried out: 'Alas, father!' Or they cried: 'Alas, brother!' Or they cried: 'Alas, master!' Or they cried: 'Alas, my husband!' With these various words of painful longing, they shouted in anguish from the root of desire. Some courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) wept with their eyes turned, some wept looking at each other, some wept turning their bodies, some wept raising their heads, some wept looking at each other's faces, some wept beating their bellies with both hands, some wept stroking their hearts with both hands, some wept with their arms crossed, some wept beating their heads with both hands, some wept by putting ashes and dirt on their heads, some wept with their hair loose covering their faces, some wept pulling out their sideburns and lowering their heads, and some wept raising both hands to the sky. Some courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]), due to their sorrow, ran east, west, south, and north, crisscrossing, like a wild deer shot with a poisoned arrow; some courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) covered their faces with their clothes and cried out and wept; some courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) trembled all over, like banana leaves blown by the wind, crying low and high; some fell to the ground in a faint, unconscious, with only a little life remaining, just barely able to cry out; some courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) were like fish taken out of the water and thrown on dry land, writhing and lying there, with only a slight breath and a bit of life remaining, groaning and weeping; some courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) were like trees that had been dug up, lying on the ground, writhing and weeping. These and other various kinds of distress afflicted their bodies, and they wailed for the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi]).

[0740a02] "At that time, the sound of weeping from Channa (車匿 [che ni]), the horse Kanthaka (乾陟 [gan zhi]), and the countless hundreds of thousands of courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]) could not be heard. Mahaprajapati (摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti]), in a faint of tears, recovered a little and then cried loudly for the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi]), speaking these words: 'Alas, my son! Alas, my son! In the past, your body was anointed and wiped with various fragrances, adorned with great divine power and virtue; how is it now that you are in a mountain valley, enduring the pain of being bitten by mosquitoes, gnats, and small poisonous insects, and living in the wilderness? Alas, my son! Your body was always covered with perfumed Kashika (迦尸迦 [jia shi jia]) clothes; how is it that you can now endure wearing coarse, smelly clothes? Alas, my son! When you were at home, you did not even touch your mouth to anything coarse or mixed in with the pure, wonderful, fragrant food, the various stews made from a hundred flavors, and the clean white rice; how is it that you can now endure eating coarse, bland food and drink, whether it be rice, parched flour, cakes, or gruel, and how can you swallow this with an empty stomach? Alas, my son! In the palace, you lay on fine, smooth beds, soft felt mattresses, covered with heavenly clothes, or with pillows placed on either side, lying or reclining, at your own will; how is it that you can now lie on the bare ground, or on a bed of thorns and rough grass, and endure sleeping? Alas, my son! When you were at home, you always had servants or attendants constantly serving you with compassionate hearts. Some leaned against you, some knelt, and some stood and looked at your face, serving you without any lack; how is it that you can now look at angry people, or the poor, or the emaciated, who have no compassion for you, and try to understand their temperament? Alas, my son! When you were at home, you were surrounded by a crowd of beautiful, pleasant, and upright courtesans (婇女 [cai nu]), and you enjoyed happiness; how is it that you can now be in the mountain wilderness, like a wild beast, constantly in fear, sitting alone and walking alone, and still be happy in your heart? Alas, my son! You were born with a long, straight net of fine lines, soft toes, and your ankles, calves, and shins were like those of a deer king. The soles of your feet were soft like lotus leaves, adorned with two clear and distinct wheels; how is it that your feet, which are like this, can now walk barefoot on the ground, which has thorns, sand, and gravel, or is sometimes frozen, or sometimes full of hot dust? How can you endure walking and treading on this?''
[0740a02] “是時,車匿及馬乾陟,并彼無量百千婇女,哭泣之聲,不可得聞.摩訶波闍波提,流淚悶絕,小穌即便大哭太子,口唱是言: ‘嗚呼我子! 嗚呼我子! 汝身本時,以種種香摩塗拂拭,威神大德而用莊嚴;今者云何在於山谷,為諸蚊虻細小毒虫唼[口*束]汝身,能忍此苦,住於曠野?嗚呼我子! 汝身恒以迦尸迦衣薰香所覆;今者云何麤澁臭衣,能忍著身?嗚呼我子! 汝在家時,清淨妙香百味所作,種種羹臛潔白之食,自餘惡雜不曾向口;今者云何忍食麤澁冷淡食飲,或飯或麨,或䴵或漿,云何空飡此能得下?嗚呼我子! 在於宮內,細滑床敷,柔軟氈褥,或覆天衣,或復兩邊挾置倚枕,或臥或偃,隨意自在;今者云何在赤露地,或蕀針叢麤草之上,忍得臥眠?嗚呼我子! 在家之時,或有奴婢,或有左右,恒常供承,哀愍之心,或有倚身,或有胡跪,或有立地,向汝面觀,而得奉事,無所乏少;今者云何瞋恚之人,或有貧窮,或有憔煎,向汝無慈,汝何能觀,取其意氣?嗚呼我子! 在於家內,以妙華色,可喜端正,婇女群隊,左右圍遶,而受快樂;汝今云何在於山曠,猶如野獸,恒常恐怖,獨坐獨行,心乃娛樂?嗚呼我子! 善生羅網,所覆長直,脚指柔軟,脚踝踹脛,猶如鹿王,掌底柔軟,如蓮華葉,二輪莊嚴,分明顯著;今汝云何如是脚跡,徒跣蹹地,或有蕀針,或有沙礫,或時氷凍,或時炎埃,何忍東西,將此行涉?’

[0740b01] "At that time, Mahaprajapati (摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti]), after saying an immeasurable number of such words, and weeping for the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi]), her heart recovered a little, and she regained her original thoughts. She rose from the ground and asked Channa (車匿 [che ni]): 'Channa! This matter has already happened. When my son, Siddhartha (悉達 [xi da]), was on his way, what did he entrust to you? Channa! Who cut off my son's soft, greenish-black hair? Channa! Where is my son's hair now?' Channa replied: 'Great Lady of the kingdom! The Tathagata (妃子悉達 [fei zi xi da]) entrusted me with these words: "Channa! When you get to my home, please, with great care, bow twice and greet my mother, Mahaprajapati (摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti]). After bowing twice, say these words: 'I inform the great mother, please do not be too sorrowful, do not be in distress, and do not think about me; the son will soon attain his heart's desire, and as soon as he does, he will return to pay his respects to the great mother.'" The holy son himself took the knife, held his topknot in his left hand, and held the knife in his right hand, and cut it off himself. He threw it into the empty sky, and the Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) caught it and took it back to the deva (天 [tian]) palace to make offerings to it.' When Mahaprajapati (摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti]) heard Channa say this, she wept even more for the Tathagata (太子 [tai zi])'s topknot: 'Alas, my son! Your hair was so long, soft, and coiled like a snail's shell, extremely upright and proper. From each pore, a single hair grew in a spiral, not messy or broken, fit to wear a king's crown and receive the royal throne. How could you bear to cut it off and throw it away? Alas, my son! Your arms are so long, and your gait is so slow and steady, like a lion king; your eyes are round and full, like an ox king; your body is golden in color, your chest and shoulders are broad and wide, and your voice is deep and resounding, like a drum or thunder. How can such a person leave home and live in the mountains and wilderness? This place of mine has no signs of good fortune. If such a person performs the Dharma, this place will fall and not be able to rise again, and he will become the ruler of the world. I wish that all virtuous people and all virtuous merits will encounter the appearance of the King of the Dharma in the world, bringing peace and happiness to all living beings.' And there is a gatha (偈 [ji]) that says:
"'Surely this land has no good fortune, so it should not give birth to such a wise person.
Since such a virtuous body has appeared, he should be the holy ruler of the world.'
[0740b01] “是時,摩訶波闍波提作如是等無量無邊諸種語言哭太子已,心薄穌醒,得復本念,從地而起,問車匿言: ‘車匿! 此事已然,我子悉達,行路之時向汝何囑?車匿! 我子所有柔軟青色紺黑頭髮,復誰割也?車匿! 我子頭髮,今在何處?’ 車匿報言: ‘國大夫人妃子悉達囑語我言: “車匿! 汝至我家,為我慇懃再拜問訊我母摩訶波闍波提,若再拜已,作如是言: ‘諮啟大母,願莫大愁,莫生苦惱,莫憶於我;子不久得如心所願,得即迴還,奉覲大母.’ ” 其聖子手,自拔於刀,左執頭髻,右手持刀,而自割截,擲於虛空,諸天接取,將還天宮,為供養故.’ 是時摩訶波闍波提,既聞車匿作是語已,復更重哭大子髮髻, ‘嗚呼我子! 頭髮甚長,柔軟螺髻,極能端正,一一毛孔,一毛旋生,不亂不斷,堪著王冠受於王位,汝今何忍割截擲棄?嗚呼我子! 兩臂甚長,行步庠序,如師子王;兩目圓滿,猶如牛王;身體金色,胸髆寬大,聲音隱隱,如鼓如雷.如是人者,何堪出家居在山野?今我此地,無有福相,若是人者,行如法行,此地倒已,復不能起,為世作主.我願一切有德之人,諸功德具,值於法王出現於世,令諸大眾安隱快樂.’ 而有偈說:

既現如是功德身, 應當為世作聖主.’
[0740b01] “shì shí, mó hē bō dū bō tí zuò rú shì děng wú liàng wú biān zhū zhǒng yǔ yán kū tài zi yǐ, xīn báo sū xǐng, dé fù běn niàn, cóng de ér qǐ, wèn chē nì yán: ‘chē nì! cǐ shì yǐ rán, wǒ zi xī dá, xíng lù zhī shí xiàng rǔ hé zhǔ? chē nì! wǒ zi suǒ yǒu róu ruǎn qīng sè gàn hēi tóu fà, fù shuí gē yě? chē nì! wǒ zi tóu fà, jīn zài hé chù?’ chē nì bào yán: ‘guó dà fū rén fēi zi xī dá zhǔ yǔ wǒ yán: “chē nì! rǔ zhì wǒ jiā, wèi wǒ yīn qín zài bài wèn xùn wǒ mǔ mó hē bō dū bō tí, ruò zài bài yǐ, zuò rú shì yán: ‘zī qǐ dà mǔ, yuàn mò dà chóu, mò shēng kǔ nǎo, mò yì yú wǒ; zi bù jiǔ dé rú xīn suǒ yuàn, dé jí huí hái, fèng jìn dà mǔ.’ ” qí shèng zi shǒu, zì bá yú dāo, zuǒ zhí tóu jì, yòu shǒu chí dāo, ér zì gē jié, zhì yú xū kōng, zhū tiān jiē qǔ, jiāng hái tiān gōng, wèi gōng yǎng gù.’ shì shí mó hē bō dū bō tí, jì wén chē nì zuò shì yǔ yǐ, fù gèng zhòng kū dà zi fà jì, ‘wū hū wǒ zi! tóu fà shén zhǎng, róu ruǎn luó jì, jí néng duān zhèng, yī yī máo kǒng, yī máo xuán shēng, bù luàn bù duàn, kān zhe wáng guān shòu yú wáng wèi, rǔ jīn hé rěn gē jié zhì qì? wū hū wǒ zi! liǎng bì shén zhǎng, xíng bù xiáng xù, rú shī zi wáng; liǎng mù yuán mǎn, yóu rú niú wáng; shēn tǐ jīn sè, xiōng bó kuān dà, shēng yīn yǐn yǐn, rú gǔ rú léi. rú shì rén zhě, hé kān chū jiā jū zài shān yě? jīn wǒ cǐ de, wú yǒu fú xiāng, ruò shì rén zhě, xíng rú fǎ xíng, cǐ de dào yǐ, fù bù néng qǐ, wèi shì zuò zhǔ. wǒ yuàn yī qiè yǒu dé zhī rén, zhū gōng dé jù, zhí yú fǎ wáng chū xiàn yú shì, lìng zhū dà zhòng ān yǐn kuài lè.’ ér yǒu jì shuō:

[0740b01] "shi shi, mo he bo du bo ti zuo ru shi deng wu liang wu bian zhu zhong yu yan ku tai zi yi, xin bao su xing, de fu ben nian, cong de er qi, wen che ni yan: 'che ni! ci shi yi ran, wo zi xi da, xing lu zhi shi xiang ru he zhu? che ni! wo zi suo you rou ruan qing se gan hei tou fa, fu shui ge ye? che ni! wo zi tou fa, jin zai he chu?' che ni bao yan: 'guo da fu ren fei zi xi da zhu yu wo yan: "che ni! ru zhi wo jia, wei wo yin qin zai bai wen xun wo mu mo he bo du bo ti, ruo zai bai yi, zuo ru shi yan: 'zi qi da mu, yuan mo da chou, mo sheng ku nao, mo yi yu wo; zi bu jiu de ru xin suo yuan, de ji hui hai, feng jin da mu.' " qi sheng zi shou, zi ba yu dao, zuo zhi tou ji, you shou chi dao, er zi ge jie, zhi yu xu kong, zhu tian jie qu, jiang hai tian gong, wei gong yang gu.' shi shi mo he bo du bo ti, ji wen che ni zuo shi yu yi, fu geng zhong ku da zi fa ji, 'wu hu wo zi! tou fa shen zhang, rou ruan luo ji, ji neng duan zheng, yi yi mao kong, yi mao xuan sheng, bu luan bu duan, kan zhe wang guan shou yu wang wei, ru jin he ren ge jie zhi qi? wu hu wo zi! liang bi shen zhang, xing bu xiang xu, ru shi zi wang; liang mu yuan man, you ru niu wang; shen ti jin se, xiong bo kuan da, sheng yin yin yin, ru gu ru lei. ru shi ren zhe, he kan chu jia ju zai shan ye? jin wo ci de, wu you fu xiang, ruo shi ren zhe, xing ru fa xing, ci de dao yi, fu bu neng qi, wei shi zuo zhu. wo yuan yi qie you de zhi ren, zhu gong de ju, zhi yu fa wang chu xian yu shi, ling zhu da zhong an yin kuai le.' er you ji shuo:
" 'bi qi ci de wu you fu, bu ying sheng shi zhi hui ren,
ji xian ru shi gong de shen, ying dang wei shi zuo sheng zhu.'
