[0584b06] At that time, the Buddha told the bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), having bathed his body and eaten the milk gruel, his strength fully restored, was about to proceed to the place of sixteen merits, under the Bodhi tree (菩提樹 [pu ti shu]), in order to subdue the mara (魔 [mo]) enemies. With the great marks of a great man, he walked westward. He walked slowly and peacefully, his bearing beautiful like a rainbow. He walked gracefully and leisurely, majestic like Mount Sumeru (須彌山 [xu mi shan]). He did not walk hastily, nor slowly, nor heavily, nor lightly, nor turbidly. He walked free from defilement, purely, without fault, without ignorance, without attachment. He walked like a lion king (師子王 [shi zi wang]), like a dragon king (龍王 [long wang]), like Narayana (那羅延 [na luo yan]). He walked without touching the ground, with the thousand-spoked wheel imprint on his feet. His webbed toes, with nails like red copper, illuminated the ground as he walked, shaking the great earth. He walked with a great sound, like mountains clashing. Pits and mounds naturally leveled as he walked. The light from his feet illuminated sinful beings, guiding them to good destinies as he walked. Lotuses blossomed wherever he trod as he walked. He walked in accordance with past Buddhas (諸佛 [zhu fu]), taking his lion throne (師子座 [shi zi zuo]). His mind was like a diamond, indestructible as he walked. He closed all evil paths and opened all good gates as he walked. He brought peace and joy to all sentient beings as he walked. He extinguished the power of mara (魔 [mo]) as he walked. He crushed all heretical doctrines as he walked. He eliminated the obscuring hindrances of ignorance (無明 [wu ming]) as he walked. He severed the wings of samsara (生死 [sheng si]) as he walked. He overshadowed Śakra (釋 [shi]), Brahma (梵 [fan]), and the Protectors of the World, the Lord of Self-Mastery (護世自在天王 [hu shi zi zai tian wang]) as he walked. In the three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), he walked as the sole venerable one. He walked, having realized the holy path by himself, not through others' enlightenment. He walked, about to attain all-knowledge (一切智 [yi qie zhi]). He walked, with mindfulness (念 [nian]) and wisdom (慧 [hui]) in accord. He walked, wishing to eliminate birth (生 [sheng]), old age (老 [lao]), sickness (病 [bing]), and death (死 [si]). He walked, heading towards tranquility (寂滅 [ji mie]), purity (離垢 [li gou]), immortality (不死 [bu si]), and the fearless city of Nirvana (無畏向涅槃城 [wu wei xiang nie pan cheng]).

[0584b29] "At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), with right mindfulness, walked directly towards the Bodhi tree (菩提之樹 [pu ti zhi shu]), gazing straight ahead. At that time, there were immeasurable dignified behaviors. Then the wind deities (風天 [feng tian]) and rain deities (雨天 [yu tian]), from the Nairanjana River (尼連河 [ni lian he]) to the Bodhi tree (菩提樹 [pu ti shu]), completely swept and purified the area, and showered countless excellent fragrant flowers, covering the ground. In the three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), all large and small trees bowed their branches towards the Bodhi tree (菩提樹 [pu ti shu]). In the three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), all large and small mountains, such as Mount Sumeru (須彌山 [xu mi shan]), bowed their peaks towards the Bodhi tree (菩提樹 [pu ti shu]). The devas (天子 [tian zi]) of the desire realm scattered various subtle fragrant flowers, each exquisite flower forming a flower platform (花臺 [hua tai]), a krośa (拘盧舍 [ju lu she]) in length and breadth. They also manifested a wide, boundless road. On both sides of the road, there were seven-jeweled railings, all splendidly adorned, their height like seven talā trees (多羅樹 [duo luo shu]). Various jewel banners and canopies adorned the area. They also transformed seven-jeweled talā trees (多羅之樹 [duo luo zhi shu]), with golden ropes intertwined between each tree, from which hung precious bells, with bright pearls and lapis lazuli interspersed among them. Between the two rows of trees were seven-jeweled ponds, filled with golden sand and fragrant water. Utpala flowers (優鉢羅花 [you bo luo hua]), Kumuda flowers (拘勿頭花 [ju wu tou hua]), Padma flowers (波頭摩花 [bo tou mo hua]), Pundarika flowers (芬陀利花 [fen tuo li hua]), and other such flowers filled the ponds. On the four sides of the ponds were seven-jeweled steps, splendidly adorned all around. On these steps, there were Kala-viṅka (迦陵頻伽 [jia ling pin jia]), ducks, geese, mandarins, and Jīvaṃjīvaka (命命諸鳥 [ming ming zhu niao]), emitting harmonious and elegant sounds. There were eighty-four thousand heavenly maidens (天諸婇女 [tian zhu cai nu]), who sprinkled fragrant water on the path ahead. There were also eighty-four thousand heavenly maidens (天諸婇女 [tian zhu cai nu]) who scattered various heavenly flowers. Under each tree, there were exquisite jewel platforms, and on each platform, there were eighty-four thousand heavenly maidens (天諸婇女 [tian zhu cai nu]), each holding a precious vessel filled with exquisite candana (栴檀 [zhan tan]) and agarwood (沈水之香 [chen shui zhi xiang]). There were also five thousand heavenly maidens (天諸婇女 [tian zhu cai nu]) who played heavenly music, sang, and praised with harmonious and elegant sounds."

[0585a03] The Buddha told the bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "When the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) was about to sit on the Bodhi seat (菩提座 [pu ti zuo]), that night the Great Brahma Heaven King (大梵天王 [da fan tian wang]), lord of the three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), addressed the Brahma (梵 [fan]) assembly, saying: 'Venerable ones, you should know! The Bodhisattva-mahāsattva (菩薩摩訶薩 [pu sa mo he sa]) is clad in the armor of diligence (精進甲 [jing jin jia]), his wisdom is firm, his mind is not weary. He has accomplished all the practices of a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), penetrated all the gates of pāramitā (波羅蜜門 [bo luo mi men]), attained great mastery in all Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) grounds, and acquired pure aspirations of Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]). He understands the sharpness and dullness of all sentient beings' faculties. He dwells in the secret treasury of the Tathāgata (如來 [ru lai]), transcending all mara (魔 [mo]) realms. He can awaken to all good dharmas by himself, not by others' awakening. He is protected and mindful of the great supernatural power of the Tathāgatas (如來 [ru lai]). He is about to teach the path of liberation for sentient beings, and act as a great merchant for them, subduing all mara (魔 [mo]) armies. In the three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), only the Buddha (佛 [fu]) is the sole venerable one, the great king of physicians, harmonizing the dharma medicine to relieve the suffering of sentient beings; he is the great dharma king (大法王 [da fa wang]), illuminating the ten directions with the light of wisdom, establishing the great dharma banner (大法幢 [da fa chuang]). He is not defiled by the eight worldly dharmas, like a lotus untouched by water; he can accumulate immeasurable true dharma treasures, like the great ocean containing various rare treasures. He regards enemies and friends equally, like Mount Sumeru (須彌山 [xu mi shan]) standing unmoving. His mind is pure, like a maṇi (摩尼 [mo ni]) gem free from defilement. He has great mastery in the three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]). The Bodhisattva-mahāsattva (菩薩摩訶薩 [pu sa mo he sa]) with such immeasurable merits proceeds to the Bodhimanda (菩提場 [pu ti chang]), in order to subdue all mara (魔 [mo]) enemies, to attain Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]), to perfect the ten powers (十力 [shi li]), the four fearlessnesses (四無所畏 [si wu suo wei]), and the eighteen unique Buddha dharmas (十八不共佛法 [shi ba bu gong fu fa]), to turn the Dharma wheel (正法輪 [zheng fa lun]), to roar the great lion's roar (大師子吼 [da shi zi hou]), to shower the great dharma rain to satisfy sentient beings, to enable sentient beings to acquire the pure dharma eye (清淨法眼 [qing jing fa yan]), to make heretics cease their disputes, to fulfill his original vows, and to attain mastery in all dharmas. Venerable ones! You should resolve to go and respectfully make offerings.' Then he spoke a verse:
"'After immeasurable hundreds of thousands of kalpas,
Endowed with loving-kindness (慈 [ci]), compassion (悲 [bei]), joy (喜 [xi]), and equanimity (捨 [she]),
With meditation (禪定 [chan ding]), wisdom (智慧 [zhi hui]), and supernatural powers (通 [tong]),
He will now attain Nirvana (涅槃 [nie pan]).
If you wish to escape the three evil destinies (三惡 [san e]),
And be free from the eight calamities (八難 [ba nan]),
To receive the excellent rewards of heavenly bliss,
And even attain Nirvana (涅槃 [nie pan]).
You should hold supreme offerings,
To make offerings to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]),
Who has practiced asceticism (苦行 [ku xing]) for six years,
And is about to proceed to the Bodhimanda (菩提場 [pu ti chang]).
The lord of the three thousand worlds (三千世界主 [san qian shi jie zhu]),
Śakra (釋 [shi]), Brahma (梵 [fan]), and the sun and moon,
None are equal to him,
Those who see him are all joyful.
He will subdue the mara (魔 [mo]) armies,
And will surely attain perfect enlightenment (正覺 [zheng jue]).
His body has thirty-two marks,
The most supreme self-adornment,
His Brahma (梵 [fan]) voice is exceedingly clear,
His mind pure and free from all faults.
Or if someone desires,
To be reborn in the Brahma world (梵世 [fan shi]),
Or if someone desires,
To attain the Śrāvaka (聲聞 [sheng wen]) fruit,
Or if someone desires,
To become a Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]),
Or if someone desires,
To obtain the unsurpassed fruit,
Such people,
Should make offerings to the Guide (導師 [dao shi]).'"

[0585b16] The Buddha told the bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "At that time, the Great Brahma Heaven King (大梵天王 [da fan tian wang]), in order to make offerings to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), used his supernatural power to purify the entire three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]). He removed all sand, salt, tiles, shards, thorns, and brambles, making the ground as flat as a palm, without any hills or mounds. He adorned it with gold, silver, lapis lazuli, conch (硨磲 [che qu]), agate (馬碯 [ma nao]), coral, amber, pearls, and other precious jewels. Moreover, throughout the three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), auspicious grasses grew everywhere, green and spiraling clockwise, soft and lovely like Kāśikā (迦尸迦衣 [jia shi jia yi]) garments. All great oceans transformed into flat land, without harming the fish, turtles, and other aquatic creatures. All Brahma kings (梵王 [fan wang]), Indras (帝釋 [di shi]), and the Four Guardian Kings (護世四王 [hu shi si wang]) from the buddha-fields (剎土 [sha tu]) in the ten directions, seeing such purity and adornment in this three thousand great thousand worlds (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), each adorned their own lands and offered distant reverence. Also, all Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) from boundless buddha-fields (剎土 [sha tu]) in the ten directions, for the purpose of offering, used superior offerings exceeding those of humans and devas, and offered them from their respective lands. They all saw the boundless worlds as one buddha-field (佛土 [fu tu]). In the dark places between Mount Sumeru (須彌山 [xu mi shan]) and the Iron Mountain Range (鐵圍山 [tie wei shan]), where the sun and moon's divine light could not reach, they all saw the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) light shining universally.

The four sides of the ground were surrounded by seven layers of jewel paths. Each jewel path was lined with jewel talā trees (寶多羅樹 [bao duo luo shu]). Golden ropes intertwined between each tree, from which hung precious bells and were covered with jewel nets. Jambūnada gold (閻浮檀金 [yan fu tan jin]) formed lotuses that covered the ground everywhere, and each flower was adorned with seven jewels. Various supreme heavenly incenses were burned. All the exquisite trees of humans and devas in the ten directions appeared there; also, all the superior fragrant land and water flowers of the ten directions appeared there. Each thought their own palace was like a tomb, and all offered immeasurable praises of its merits. There were also four Bodhi tree guardian deities (護菩提樹神 [hu pu ti shu shen]): one named Virūpākṣa (毘留薄瞿 [pi liu bao qu]), the second Sumanā (蘇摩那 [su mo na]), the third Utsukpatti (烏珠鉢底 [wu zhu bo di]), and the fourth Tejas (帝珠 [di zhu]). Each used their divine power to transform the Bodhi tree (菩提樹 [pu ti shu]), making it eighty talā trees (多羅之樹 [duo luo zhi shu]) tall, vast, and splendidly adorned. Its roots, stems, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits were luxuriant, upright, lovely, and incomparably adorned, bringing joy to all who saw it, surpassing the Pāricchattaka tree (波利質多羅樹 [bo li zhi duo luo shu]) and the Kubera tree (拘鞞羅樹 [ju bing luo shu]) in Indra's (帝釋 [di shi]) joyous garden. The hungry and thirsty all received food and drink. Pregnant beings were all delivered safely. Emaciated beings were all made strong. Animals (畜生 [chu sheng]) that devoured each other,
Each gave rise to compassion (慈心 [ci xin]).
The eight calamities (八難 [ba nan]) were all closed off,
The three evil destinies (三惡 [san e]) were all empty and quiet.
Where the light shone,
All received subtle bliss.
Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, etc.,
Those whose faculties were incomplete,
All became complete.
Those afflicted by defilements (煩惱 [fan nao]),
Obtained great peace.
The mad gained right mindfulness,
The poor and lowly gained wealth and honor,
The sick gained recovery,
Prisoners gained liberation.
There was no contention among all,
Mutual compassion arose,
Like parents loving their children.
The Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) net of light,
Filled the ten directions,
Universally illuminating worlds like the sands of the Ganges,
Overshadowing boundless lands.
Iron Mountain Range (鐵圍 [tie wei]), Great Iron Mountain Range (大鐵圍 [da tie wei]),
And other mountains,
All ceased to appear,
Transformed into one buddha-field (佛剎 [fu sha]).
Made of all jewels,
Splendid and extremely subtle,
Due to the illumination of the light,
Everything was like seeing the palm of one's hand.
Such adornments,
Were for the offering to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]).
The Bodhimanda (菩提場 [pu ti chang]) guardian deities,
There were sixteen devas (天子 [tian zi]),
Covering eighty yojanas (由旬 [you xun]),
Manifesting various adornments.
The Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) great power,
Covering eighty yojanas (由旬 [you xun]),
Also manifested boundless buddha-fields (剎 [sha]),
Each purified and adorned.
Devas (天 [tian]), nagas (龍 [long]), eight groups of gods and spirits (八部眾 [ba bu zhong]),
Having witnessed such matters,
Thought of their original palaces,
And conceived of them as tombs.
All arose with extraordinary minds,
And praised the merits:
'Excellent! Fortunes are unfathomable,
Thus such fruits are obtained.
Not only body, speech, and mind,
Did such adornments arise.
By the power of original vows,
Everything is accomplished.
According to the karma of sentient beings,
All are fulfilled.'
The four Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]) guardian deities,
Adorned the Bodhi tree (菩提樹 [pu ti shu]),
Surpassing the joyous garden,
Indra's (帝釋 [di shi]) marvelous forest.
Adorned by these deities,
Upright and extremely lovely,
All devas and humans,
Praised without end."

[0586b16] The Buddha told the bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "The Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) pure light universally illuminated the world, eliminating the afflictions of all sentient beings. Those who encountered this light all became joyful. This light also shone upon the palace of the Naga King Kali (迦利龍王 [jia li long wang]). At that time, the Naga King (龍王 [long wang]), encountering this light, spoke a verse among the Naga (龍 [long]) assembly:
"'The three Buddhas (三佛 [san fu]) of the past have all appeared,
Their wisdom light truly golden in color.
Now again I see the stainless light,
Thus, a Buddha (佛 [fu]) will surely arise in the world.
His light is purer than the sun and moon,
Not that of fireflies, candles, stars, or lightning, etc.,
Nor that of Brahma (梵 [fan]), Indra (釋 [shi]), or Asuras (阿修羅 [a xiu luo]),
Nor can any divine light match it.
Due to my past unwholesome karma,
My palace is always dark,
Constantly raining hot sand to burn my body,
I remember suffering this pain for a long time.
Suddenly I encountered a light like the sun,
My body and mind became cool and joyful,
He who has practiced various deeds for kalpas,
Will now surely sit on the Bodhimanda (菩提場 [pu ti chang]).
I, along with you and all relatives,
With clothes, fragrant flowers, and music,
And with various adornments,
Will make offerings to the one who benefits the world.'"

[0586c01] The Buddha told the bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "At that time, the Naga King (龍王 [long wang]), with his retinue, rejoiced and looked around. He saw the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa])'s majestic form like Mount Sumeru (須彌山 [xu mi shan]), surrounded by Brahma (梵 [fan]), Indra (帝釋 [di shi]), the Four Kings (四王 [si wang]), Nagas (龍神 [long shen]), and the eight groups of gods and spirits (八部 [ba bu]). With great joy, they prostrated themselves at his feet with utmost reverence and respect. They immediately offered various fragrant flowers, clothes, and necklaces, performed various musical acts to make offerings to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]). With clasped hands and bowed bodies, they praised him with verses:
"'Your face is pure as the full moon,
Great guide of the world.
I formerly met Buddhas (諸佛 [zhu fu]),
All auspicious signs were like this.
Now the Honored One has overcome mara (魔 [mo]),
And is about to attain Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]).
In past kalpas,
You extensively practiced internal and external giving,
Upholding precepts, enduring,
Diligence, meditation, and wisdom power,
Expedient means, great compassion,
Vows, joy, and equanimity, etc.
By these merits,
You will attain Buddhahood.
All forests,
Bow their branches to the Buddha tree (佛樹 [fu shu]).
There are a thousand auspicious vases,
Surrounding in the sky.
Many birds emit harmonious sounds,
Flying and chasing in competition.
Your body's color is like pure gold light,
Shining universally in the ten directions.
Evil destinies cease their suffering,
The world receives joy.
The Honored One now in the three realms (三界 [san jie]),
Will surely be the great guide.
Brahma King (梵王 [fan wang]) and Indra (帝釋 [di shi]),
Devas (天子 [tian zi]) of the desire and form realms,
All abandon subtle joys,
All come to make offerings.
The Honored One now in the world,
Will surely be the great king of physicians.
Wherever you tread,
Lotuses arise with each step.
The Honored One now in the world,
Will surely be worthy of offerings.
The guide sits on the Bodhimanda (道場 [dao chang]),
Countless millions,
All mara (魔 [mo]) armies,
Will all be subdued.
The sun and moon may fall,
Mount Sumeru (須彌 [xu mi]) may collapse,
But if Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]) is not attained,
You will never move from this seat.
May I and my retinue,
Be able to abandon this naga (龍 [long]) body,
Adorned with merits,
And go to the Bodhi seat (菩提座 [pu ti zuo]).'

Past Buddhas (諸佛 [zhu fu]), wishing to attain Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]), all sat on pure grass.' At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) further thought: 'Who can give me such pure grass?' Then Śakra Devānām Indra (釋提桓因 [shi ti huan yin]) transformed his body into a grass cutter, standing to the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) right, not too close nor too far, holding the grass. The grass was dark blue like a peacock's tail, soft and lovely like Kāśikā (迦尸迦衣 [jia shi jia yi]) garments, spiraling clockwise and fragrant.

[0587b05] "At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), wishing to ask the transformed person for pure grass, spoke with a subtle Brahma voice (梵聲 [fan sheng]), which was a true voice, a perfectly clear voice, a clear and bright voice, a harmonious and moist voice, a flowing and beautiful voice, a well-guided voice, an unhesitating voice, a smooth voice, an unbroken voice, a soft voice, a tranquil and elegant voice, an analytical voice, a pleasant-to-the-ear voice, a fitting voice, like the voice of a Kala-viṅka (迦陵頻伽 [jia ling pin jia]), like the voice of a Jīvaṃjīvaka (命命鳥 [ming ming niao]), like the sound of deep thunder, like the sound of ocean waves, like the sound of a mountain collapsing, like the sound of heavenly praise, like the voice of Brahma (梵天 [fan tian]), like the voice of a lion (師子 [shi zi]), like the voice of a dragon king (龍王 [long wang]), like the voice of an elephant king (象王 [xiang wang]), not a rapid voice, not a slow voice, a voice of liberation, a stainless voice, a voice based on meaning, a timely voice, a voice proclaiming eighty-four thousand billion dharma gates, a voice in accord with all Buddha dharmas (諸佛法聲 [zhu fu fa sheng]). The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), with this beautiful voice, said to the transformed person: 'Venerable one! Can you give me pure grass?' Then he spoke a verse:
"'Jixiang (吉祥 [ji xiang]), at this time,
You should quickly bestow pure grass.
I shall sit on this grass,
And subdue those mara (魔 [mo]) armies.
If I attain the tranquil dharma,
I shall immediately gain the unsurpassed path.
For the sake of Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]),
I have practiced for immeasurable kalpas,
Giving, precepts, diligence, endurance,
Meditation, wisdom power,
Liberation and joy,
Merits and supernatural powers,
Because of those practices,
I now receive the perfect fruit.
If you give me pure grass,
You will gain immeasurable merits.
By giving pure grass,
You will surely become a guide.'
Jixiang (吉祥 [ji xiang]) heard these words,
And his heart was filled with great joy.
Holding the pure and exquisite grass in his hand,
He stood before the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]),
And with a joyful heart,
He spoke to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]):
'If by giving grass,
One can attain great Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]),
May you first bestow Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]),
And then accept the pure grass.'
The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) replied to Jixiang (吉祥 [ji xiang]):
'Not only by giving pure grass,
Will one immediately attain great Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]);
One should cultivate immeasurable virtues,
Then receive the prophecy from Buddhas (諸佛 [zhu fu]).
Jixiang (吉祥 [ji xiang]), you should know,
Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]) is not given rashly;
If Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]) could be given rashly;
I would bestow Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]),
Upon all sentient beings.
Jixiang (吉祥 [ji xiang]), you should know,
After I attain Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]),
I will spread it throughout the world,
And you shall receive,
The nectar dharma from me.'
The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) received the pure grass,
And proceeded to the Bodhimanda (菩提場 [pu ti chang]).
When he lifted his foot to walk,
The earth greatly trembled.
Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]), nagas (龍 [long]), and spirits (神 [shen]), etc.,
All gave rise to joyful minds,
Respectfully clasped their hands and said:
'The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) now,
Will surely subdue all mara (魔 [mo]),
And will surely attain the nectar dharma,
And realize the unsurpassed path.'"
