[0578c09] At that time, the Buddha 佛 [fu] told the bhikshus: " 車匿 [che ni] Chandaka, following the Bodhisattva's 菩薩 [pu sa] instructions, comforted the Great King 大王 [da wang] (King Bimbisara 頻婆娑羅王 [pin po suo luo wang]), 摩訶波闍波提 [mo he bo du bo ti] Mahaprajapati, 耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo] Yashodhara, and the 釋種 [shi zhong] Shakya clan, freeing them from sorrow and distress. For the benefit of all sentient beings, he shaved off his hair and beard, and traded his 憍奢耶衣 [jiao she ye yi] kauseya robe with a hunter for a pure monastic 袈裟 [jia sha] kasaya robe. Then he went to the female ascetic 鞞留梵志苦行女人 [bing liu fan zhi ku xing nu ren] Bhiru Brahmachari. At that time, the woman invited the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] to a meal the next day. Having accepted the invitation, he then went to the female ascetic 波頭摩梵志苦行女人 [bo tou mo fan zhi ku xing nu ren] Padma Brahmachari. This woman also invited the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] to a meal the next day. Having accepted the invitation, he again went to the ascetic 利婆陀梵行仙人 [li po tuo fan xing xian ren] Ripata Brahmachari. This ascetic also invited the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] to a meal the next day. Having accepted the invitation, he again went to the two ascetics 光明調伏二仙人 [guang ming diao fu er xian ren] Guangming and Tiaofu, who also invited the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] to a meal the next day. Bhikshus! The Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] then proceeded to the city of 毘舍離城 [pi she li cheng] Vaishali. Near the city lived an ascetic named 阿羅邏 [a luo luo] Arada, who, with his three hundred disciples, constantly preached the meditation of the 無所有處定 [wu suo you chu ding] realm of nothingness to his disciples. When the ascetic saw the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] from afar, he was filled with wonder and told his disciples: 'You should observe this superior person.' The disciples said to the ascetic: 'We see that this person is handsome beyond anything we have seen before. Where does he come from?' Bhikshus! At that time, I asked 阿羅邏 [a luo luo] Arada: 'May I hear the Dharma 法 [fa] you have realized? I wish to practice it, please tell me.' The ascetic said: '瞿曇 [qu tan] Gautama! The Dharma 法 [fa] I have realized is profound and subtle. If you are able to learn it, I will proclaim it to you so you can practice it. If there is a devout and virtuous man who accepts my teaching, he will achieve the subtle meditation of the 無所有處定 [wu suo you chu ding] realm of nothingness.'

[0578c29] "Bhikshus! When I heard what the ascetic said, I thought: 'I now have diligence, mindfulness, meditation, joy, faith, and wisdom. Alone in one place, constantly cultivating without negligence, I will surely realize the Dharma 法 [fa] that ascetic has attained.' So I diligently practiced without weariness, and after a short time, I had attained it. Having attained the meditation, I went to the ascetic and said: 'Great ascetic! Have you realized only this, or is there anything else?' The ascetic said: '瞿曇 [qu tan] Gautama! I have attained only this, nothing else.' The Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] replied: 'I have already realized this Dharma 法 [fa].' The ascetic said: 'What I have realized, you also can realize. You and I should live together and instruct disciples.' Bhikshus! At that time, the ascetic greatly respected me, and offered me the most supreme and subtle offerings. Among all his students, he regarded me as his equal.

[0579a10] "Bhikshus! At that time, I thought: 'What the ascetic said cannot completely end suffering. What Dharma 法 [fa] can be the cause of liberation from suffering?' Immediately at that time, I left the city of 毘舍離城 [pi she li cheng] Vaishali and gradually traveled to the great city of 王舍大城 [wang she da cheng] Rajagriha in the kingdom of 摩伽陀國 [mo jia tuo guo] Magadha, entered 靈鷲山 [ling jiu shan] Gridhrakuta Mountain, and dwelled alone in one place, constantly guarded by countless hundreds of thousands of devas. In the morning, I put on my robe and took my begging bowl, entering 王舍城 [wang she cheng] Rajagriha through the 溫泉門 [wen quan men] Hot Spring Gate to beg for food in sequence. My steps were graceful, my senses tranquil, I gazed five cubits ahead, and my mind was not scattered. The people in the city, seeing the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] approach, were filled with wonder, and all said: 'Who is this person? Is he a mountain spirit? Is he Brahma 梵王 [fan wang]? Is he Indra 帝釋 [di shi]? Is he one of the 四天王 [si tian wang] Four Great Kings?'"

[0579a19] At that time, the World-Honored One 世尊 [shi zun] spoke in verse:

"The Bodhisattva's 菩薩 [pu sa] pure body,
With boundless light,
His deportment is fully complete,
His mind serene and extremely gentle.
Residing on 靈鷲山 [ling jiu shan] Gridhrakuta Mountain,
Upholding the monastic discipline,
In the early morning,
Having put on his robe and taken his bowl,
To discipline his body and mind,
He entered the city to beg for food.
His body like molten gold,
Adorned with auspicious marks,
Men and women by the roadside,
Gazed at him with insatiable wonder.
The inhabitants of the city,
Seeing this supreme person approach,
All felt profound admiration,
And rushed to behold him.
'This person is most extraordinary,
Where does he come from now?'
Some palace women,
All ascended to splendid pavilions,
From their windows,
They gazed without ceasing.
The streets were completely filled,
The markets entirely empty,
They abandoned their work,
And all came to await the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa].
Someone quickly went to inform,
King 頻婆娑羅王 [pin po suo luo wang] Bimbisara:
'A Brahma 梵天 [fan tian] has come,
And entered the city to beg for food.'
Others said:
'Perhaps it is the Heavenly Emperor 天帝釋 [tian di shi] Indra,
Or a deva from 夜摩兜率天 [ye mo dou lu tian] Yama or Tusita Heavens,
A master of 化樂 [hua le] Nirmanarati or 他化主 [ta hua zhu] Paranirmitavashavartin.
The 四天 [si tian] Four Devas, the sun and moon,
Or perhaps 羅睺 [luo hou] Rahula and others,
鞞留質多羅 [bing liu zhi duo luo] Viruchitra,
And the various celestial beings of 薄離 [bao li] Bali.'
Others reported to the king:
'This is a spirit of 靈山 [ling shan] Gridhrakuta Mountain,
Your Majesty should know,
You have now gained great benefit.'
When the king heard these words,
His heart was filled with great joy,
He ascended to a high tower,
And gazed at the Bodhisattva's 菩薩 [pu sa] body from afar.
His auspicious marks were most solemn and beautiful,
Like a mass of pure gold,
The king then ordered his attendants,
To offer food to the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa],
And also sent them to find his dwelling,
To follow and observe him.
The messengers followed the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa],
And saw him go to 靈鷲山 [ling jiu shan] Gridhrakuta Mountain,
They returned to report to the great king,
And fully described what they had seen.
When the king heard this,
His admiration increased,
In the early morning,
He prepared his carriage and personally visited him.
From afar, he saw him among the rocks,
With a pure and shining aura,
His dignified appearance was most beautiful,
Immovable like Mount 須彌 [xu mi] Sumeru,
He dismissed all his attendants,
And proceeded on foot.
He prostrated himself at the Bodhisattva's 菩薩 [pu sa] feet,
And offered various greetings,
Then he said to the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa]:
'Great Being! Where do you come from?
Where is your hometown?
Who are your parents?
Are you a 婆羅門 [po luo men] Brahmana,
Or a 剎帝利 [sha di li] Kshatriya?
Or are you an immortal sage?
Please tell me truthfully.'
The Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] replied to the king:
'My father is King 輸檀王 [shu tan wang] Shuddhodana.
He resides at the foot of the 雪山 [xue shan] Snowy Mountains,
In a city called 迦毗羅 [jia pi luo] Kapilavastu,
Where the people live in great peace and joy.
To seek the unsurpassed path,
Therefore, I have renounced the world.'
The king again bowed his head and said:
'You are now in your prime,
Your face is extremely handsome,
You should enjoy the five desires,
Why then do you beg for food?
I will abandon this kingdom,
And govern it with you.
Now that we have met,
My heart is exceedingly joyful,
I wish to become your close friend,
And share the throne with you.
Why do you prefer to live alone,
In empty mountains and wilderness?'
At that time, the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa],
With a gentle voice,
Slowly replied to the great king:
'I am not attached,
To any worldly glory or position,
I seek tranquility,
Therefore, I have renounced the world.
How much less would I crave a kingdom?
It is like the 娑竭龍 [suo jie long] Sagara Dragon,
Whose palace is the great ocean,
Would it then crave to dwell,
In a cattle's footprint?
Great King, you should know,
The five desires have boundless faults,
They can lead one to fall into hell,
Hungry ghosts, and animals.
The wise should avoid them,
Discard them like phlegm and saliva.
Desires are like ripened fruit,
They will soon fall.
Also like clouds in the sky,
They vanish in an instant,
Like the swift wind,
They never cease for a moment.
If one is attached to the five desires,
One loses the joy of liberation.
Who is a wise man,
Who would seek the cause of great suffering?
If a person has not yet obtained desires,
The fire of greed burns intensely,
If they have obtained them,
Their dissatisfaction increases even more.
After obtaining them, separation brings,
Great suffering and distress.
The subtle joys of heaven,
The excellent rewards among humans,
Even if people in the world,
Receive both kinds of rewards,
Their minds are still not satisfied,
Having gained this, they seek more.
Just like a person suffering from heat,
Driven by thirst, drinks salty water,
The five desires are also like this,
Craving never ceases,
Always in the cycle of birth and death,
Revolving endlessly.
If there is a wise person,
They will surely purify their senses,
And attain the undefiled holy path,
Only then will they be called content.
Your Majesty should observe the body,
It is impermanent and not firm,
The nine orifices constantly overflow,
A mechanism of various sufferings.
Although I may experience the five desires,
I do not become attached to them,
To seek the joy of tranquility,
Therefore, I have renounced the world.'
頻婆娑羅 [pin po suo luo] Bimbisara said:
'Excellent, great guide!
I formerly served you as a subject,
You are a prince of a great lineage,
Able to renounce the glory of the five desires.
If I now persuade you to worldly gains,
I will surely incur immeasurable sins,
May you, with great compassion,
Kindly forgive my transgression.
When you attain 佛菩提 [fu pu ti] Buddhabodhi,
In this realm,
May you not forsake me,
I will then obtain great benefit.'
Thereupon, he rose from his seat,
And prostrated himself at the Bodhisattva's 菩薩 [pu sa] feet,
Surrounded by hundreds of thousands of people,
He returned to his palace.
The Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa], with a disciplined mind,
A refuge for the world,
Moved according to the benefit of beings,
And was about to go to the 尼連河 [ni lian he] Nairanjana River."
