[0548c07] The Buddha told the Bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "After the winter season had passed, during the spring equinox, in the month of Vaiśākha (毘舍佉月 [pi she qu yue]), the flowers and leaves in the groves were fresh and lovely, neither cold nor hot. When the constellation Ti (氐宿 [di su]) was in conjunction, the supreme person of the three realms, observing the pure full moon in the world, and when the Puṣya (弗沙星 [fu sha xing]) star was precisely in conjunction with the moon, at that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) descended from Tuṣita Heaven (兜率天宮 [dou lu tian gong]) and entered his mother's womb, in the form of a white elephant (白象形 [bai xiang xing]) with six tusks fully developed. Its tusks were golden, and its head had a red light. All its features and senses were perfect. With right mindfulness, he consciously entered his mother's right side. The Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) was then sleeping peacefully and saw this event in her dream."

[0548c07] fú gào zhū bǐ qiū: “dōng jié guò yǐ, yú chūn fēn zhōng pí shě qū yuè, cóng lín huā yè xiān zé kě ài, bù hán bù rè, dī sù hé shí sān jiè shèng rén, guān chá tiān xià bái yuè yuán jìng, ér fú shā xīng zhèng yǔ yuè hé. pú sà shì shí cóng dōu lǜ tiān gōng méi, rù yú mǔ tāi, wèi bái xiàng xíng, liù yá jù zú, qí yá jīn sè shǒu yǒu hóng guāng, xíng xiāng zhū gēn xī jiē yuán mǎn, zhèng niàn le zhī, yú mǔ yòu xié jiàng shén ér rù. shèng hòu shì shí ān yǐn shuì mián, jí yú mèng zhōng jiàn rú sī shì.”

[0548c14] At that time, the World Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), wishing to reiterate this meaning, spoke in verses:

"The supreme person, entrusting his birth as a white elephant (白象 [bai xiang]),
Pure as snow, possessing six tusks,
With a beautiful trunk and feet, and a red light on his head,
His limbs and features are all perfectly formed.
He descends into the right side as if in play,
The Buddha's (佛母 [fu mu]) mother, therefore, is exceedingly joyful,
Having never seen or heard such a thing before,
Her body and mind are peaceful and calm, like in samādhi (禪定 [chan ding])."

[0548c14] ěr shí, shì zūn yù zhòng xuān cǐ yì, ér shuō jì yán:

[0548c20] "At that time, the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) was filled with joy in body and mind. Immediately, from her seat, she adorned herself with various wonderful jewels, surrounded by countless maids, and descended from the magnificent hall to the Ashoka Garden (無憂園 [wu you yuan]). Having arrived at the garden, she sent a messenger to King Śuddhodana (輸檀王 [shu tan wang]), saying: 'I wish to see you, O King, please come for a while.' The King, hearing this news, was exceedingly joyful. He arose from his jeweled throne, and with his ministers, assistants, and relatives, preceded and followed, went to the Ashoka Garden (無憂園 [wu you yuan]). Upon arriving at the garden gate, his whole body became heavy, unable to proceed, and he spoke in verses:

"'I remember going to face strong enemies,
My body did not feel heavy then,
But now it is suddenly like this,
To whom shall I ask about this change?'"

[0548c29] "At that time, a Śuddhāvāsa Deva (淨居天子 [jing ju tian zi]) appeared halfway in the sky and spoke in verses to King Śuddhodana (輸檀王 [shu tan wang]):

"'The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), with great power and virtue,
Has descended from Tuṣita Palace (兜率宮 [dou lu gong]),
And has taken residence in the Holy Queen's (聖后 [sheng hou]) womb,
As the King's prince (太子 [tai zi]).
All his practices are perfected,
Revered by devas (天 [tian]) and humans,
Possessing compassion, blessings, and wisdom,
He shall be consecrated and assume his position.'"

[0549a06] "At that time, King Śuddhodana (輸檀王 [shu tan wang]), hearing these verses, clasped his hands and bowed, saying: 'I now see this rare event.' Then he entered and saw the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]), humbled his pride, and asked the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]): 'What do you desire? Please tell me.' At that time, the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) replied in verses:

"'In my dream,
I saw an elephant (象 [xiang]) like white silver,
Its radiance surpassing the sun (日 [ri]) and moon (月 [yue]),
Its form exceedingly majestic and pure.
With six powerful tusks,
Indestructible as a vajra (金剛 [jin gang]),
Its limbs are very firm and beautiful,
It came and entered my womb.
After that, many auspicious signs appeared,
I wish the King would listen carefully now.
I saw the Trisāhasra-mahāsāhasra-lokadhātu (三千界 [san qian jie]),
Vast, grand, and adorned,
Every time I lay down to sleep,
Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) came to praise me.
Greed, anger, and other defilements,
And all attachments disappeared,
My heart was tranquil and joyful,
As if in samādhi (禪定 [chan ding]).
You should call a dream interpreter,
One who understands the Vedas (圍陀論 [wei tuo lun]),
Well-versed in the eight jyotiṣa (八耀法 [ba yao fa]),
One who can discern good and bad fortune,
Quickly summon that person,
To interpret this dream for me.'
When the King heard these words,
He immediately summoned a dream interpreter,
And said to that person:
'You should interpret the Holy Queen's (聖后 [sheng hou]) dream.'
The Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) then told him,
The cause and effect of her dream.
'Since you claim to be good at interpretation,
I shall now tell you.
I dreamed of an elephant (象 [xiang]) like snow,
Surpassing the light of the sun (日 [ri]) and moon (月 [yue]),
With majestic six tusks,
Its limbs exceedingly majestic and beautiful.
Its subtle color exceedingly bright and pure,
Firm and dense as a vajra (金剛 [jin gang]),
It came and entered my womb.
This is what I dreamed.'
When that person heard the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou])
Recount the cause and effect of her dream,
They all said: 'There is nothing unfavorable,
This dream is exceedingly auspicious.
Your lineage shall flourish,
You shall surely give birth to a son with supreme marks,
If he remains at home, he will be a Cakravartin (輪王 [lun wang]),
With power to rule all that he transforms.
If he renounces home, he will attain Buddhahood (佛道 [fu dao]),
Having compassion for all beings,
He shall sprinkle the ambrosia (甘露法 [gan lu fa]) of Dharma (法 [fa]),
And be revered by humans and devas (天 [tian]).'"

Food was given to those who needed food, clothes to those who needed clothes. Even fragrant flowers, beds, dwellings, and conveyances—everything that was requested—were all provided. The King then thought: 'In which palace shall I place the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) so that she may dwell without sorrow and with joy?' At that time, the Four Great Kings (四天王 [si tian wang]) came to the King and said: 'May it please Your Majesty to be at ease and not worry about this matter. [0549c04] The Buddha told the Bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "At that time, the deva-children (諸天子 [zhu tian zi]) of the desire realm (欲界 [yu jie]), for the sake of making offerings, each brought their palaces to the palace of King Śuddhodana (輸檀王 [shu tan wang]). The King also built a wonderful palace for the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), exquisitely decorated and adorned, unmatched in the human world. At that time, by the supernatural power of the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) great solemn samādhi (大嚴三昧 [da yan san mei]), he caused the Holy Queen Māyā's (摩耶聖后 [mo ye sheng hou]) body to appear in all those palaces, and in each of them, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) was seated in the cross-legged posture in his mother's right side. All the deva-children (諸天子 [zhu tian zi]) each thought to themselves: 'The Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) mother dwells only in my palace.'"

How is it that the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), the treasure of the world, most supreme, pure, subtle, fragrant, and undefiled, abandoned Tuṣita (兜率 [dou lu]) and dwelt among humans, staying in his mother's womb for ten months?"

At that time, the World Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), knowing yet deliberately asking Brahmā-rāja (梵天王 [fan tian wang]), said: "When I was formerly a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), dwelling in the womb for ten months, where is the jeweled palace I resided in now? [0549c24] 爾時,如來即以神力,令娑婆世界主梵天王,與六十百千億梵天,下閻浮提來詣佛所,恭敬稽首,右遶三匝却住一面.爾時,世尊知而故問梵天王言: “我昔為菩薩時,在胎十月,所居寶殿今為所在?汝可持來.”

At that time, Brahmā-rāja (梵王 [fan wang]) immediately took the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) palace and placed it within the Brahma Palace (梵殿 [fan dian]). The Brahma Palace (梵殿 [fan dian]) measured three hundred yojanas (由旬 [you xun]) in length and width, and was surrounded by eighty-four thousand koṭis (拘胝 [ju zhi]) of Brahma-devas (梵天 [fan tian]) who respectfully encircled it. [0550a14] At that time, the Great Brahmā-rāja (大梵天王 [da fan tian wang]), together with the other Brahma-devas (諸梵 [zhu fan]), carried the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) palace and placed it before the Buddha (佛 [fu]). The palace had three layers, exquisitely adorned all around. It was entirely made of Gośīrṣa Candana (牛頭栴檀 [niu tou zhan tan]) heavenly incense, one portion of which was worth the entire Trisāhasra-mahāsāhasra-lokadhātu (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]). It shone brightly and was adorned with heavenly treasures. The beds, seats, and vessels were all fitting for the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), subtle and exquisite, unmatched by humans or devas (天 [tian]), except for the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) conch-shaped hair whorl. The heavenly garments worn by the Great Brahmā-rāja (大梵天王 [da fan tian wang]), when placed on the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) seat, were like kambala (欽婆羅衣 [qin po luo yi]) cloth soaked in water. Within the three palaces, pure and wonderful heavenly flowers were scattered all around. The palace was firm and indestructible. Whoever touched it experienced wonderful joy, like the Kālin (迦隣陀衣 [jia lin tuo yi]) garment. All the palaces of the desire realm (欲界 [yu jie]) heavens (天 [tian]) appeared within the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) jeweled palace.

[0550a25] The Buddha told the Bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "On the night the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) entered the womb, a lotus flower emerged from the water's edge below, passed through the earth, and ascended to the Brahma-world (梵世 [fan shi]), measuring sixty-eight lakhs (洛叉 [luo cha]) of yojanas (由旬 [you xun]) in length and width. No one could see this lotus flower, except for the Tathāgatas (諸如來 [zhu ru lai]), Bodhisattvas (諸菩薩 [zhu pu sa]), and the Great Brahmā-rāja (大梵天王 [da fan tian wang]). Within the Trisāhasra-mahāsāhasra-lokadhātu (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), all pure and supreme delicious flavors, like ambrosia (甘露 [gan lu]), appeared in this flower. The Great Brahmā-rāja (大梵天王 [da fan tian wang]), using a vaidūrya (毘瑠璃 [pi liu li]) vessel, offered this pure and wonderful taste of ambrosia (甘露之味 [gan lu zhi wei]) to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]). The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) then accepted and partook of it. Bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu])! You should know that among the living beings in the world, there is no one who can partake of such a taste of ambrosia (甘露之味 [gan lu zhi wei]), except for Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) in their last body who have perfected the ten stages. Bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu])! By what root of goodness did the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) acquire this taste? It was because in long kalpas (劫 [jie]) past, when he practiced the Bodhisattva path (菩薩道 [pu sa dao]), he was able to use medicine to relieve the suffering of illnesses, fulfilled all desires, and bestowed fearlessness upon all who were afraid. Furthermore, he offered exquisite flowers and fruits to the Tathāgatas (如來 [ru lai]) and Buddha stupas (佛塔廟 [fu ta miao]), and to all holy assemblies, parents, and venerable elders. After giving such offerings, he then partook himself. Due to these blessings, the Great Brahmā-rāja (大梵王 [da fan wang]) would always offer the taste of ambrosia (甘露之味 [gan lu zhi wei]) within the jeweled palace. Exquisite clothes, various adornments, and various vessels appeared at will due to the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) original vows. Ānanda (阿難 [a nan])! When all Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) are about to enter the womb, such a jeweled and adorned palace first appears in their mother's right side, and then they descend from Tuṣita Heaven (兜率天宮 [dou lu tian gong]) and enter the womb, sitting in the cross-legged posture within this palace. Ānanda (阿難 [a nan])! All Holy Queen Māyās (摩耶聖后 [mo ye sheng hou]) in the worlds of the ten directions all dream of a white elephant (白象 [bai xiang]) coming. Śakra Devānām-Indra (釋提桓因 [shi ti huan yin]), the Four Great Kings (四天王 [si tian wang]), and the twenty-eight yakṣa (夜叉 [ye cha]) generals, all follow and guard him. [0550c13] "Ānanda (阿難 [a nan])! When the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) was in the womb, he did not cause the Holy Queen's (聖后 [sheng hou]) body to feel heavy or to suffer any pain. She was soft, light, comfortable, and joyful, without the distress of greed, anger, ignorance, or mental heat. There were no thoughts of desire, ill will, or harm. There was no cold or heat, hunger or thirst, delusion, sin, or distraction. There were no unpleasant sights, sounds, smells, tastes, or touches, or any other evil conditions. There were no bad dreams. There were no women's faults of greed, deceit, flattery, jealousy, or other defilements. She fully upheld pure precepts and practiced the ten good paths (十善道 [shi shan dao]), without desiring others. Nor could anyone else conceive lustful thoughts towards the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]). In Kapilavastu (迦毘羅城 [jia pi luo cheng]), and in all villages and other lands, any men or women, whether boys or girls, who were possessed by ghosts or spirits, would be cured upon seeing the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) mother. Or if there were living beings suffering from various illnesses, such as wind-phlegm, jaundice, deafness, muteness, paralysis, tooth decay, scrofula, vitiligo, wasting, epilepsy, dizziness, goiter, boils, and various other diseases, upon seeing the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) mother stretch out her hand and touch their heads, their illnesses would naturally disappear. If there were living beings suffering from such illnesses who could not personally come to see the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) mother, the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) at that time would break a blade of grass and give it to them. As soon as they held the blade of grass, all their suffering would dissipate, and they would be restored to their original health. When the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) observed the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), she saw him dwelling in her womb, on her right side, as clearly as one sees images in a bright mirror. She was joyful and harmonious, her body and mind at ease.

All devas (天 [tian]) and humans rejoiced.
To fulfill this great Dharma-rāja (大法王 [da fa wang]),
He manifested the jeweled palace in the womb,
The Guide's (導師 [dao shi]) abode, the jeweled palace,
Exquisitely adorned with wonderful candana (栴檀 [zhan tan]) fragrance.
One portion of this fragrance is worth,
Equivalent to the treasures of the Trisāhasra-mahāsāhasra-lokadhātu (三千界 [san qian jie]),
A great lotus flower emerged from below,
Its height reaching the Brahma-world (梵世 [fan shi]).
The ambrosia (甘露味 [gan lu wei]) contained in the flower,
Brahmā-rāja (梵王 [fan wang]) offered it to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]),
All living beings in the world,
None can consume even a drop of this taste.
Only the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) in his last body,
Can partake of this ambrosia (甘露食 [gan lu shi]),
By the power of blessings accumulated over kalpas (劫 [jie]),
Those who partake will have pure bodies and minds.
Indra (帝釋 [di shi]), Brahmā-rāja (梵王 [fan wang]), the Four Guardian Kings (四護世 [si hu shi]),
Bow and make offerings to the Guide (導師 [dao shi]),
Serving and bowing, they hear the subtle Dharma (妙法 [miao fa]),
Joyfully circle him clockwise, and then depart.
Similarly, countless Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) assemblies from the ten directions,
Also came for the sake of this joyful Dharma (法 [fa]),
Sitting on bright, jeweled couches,
They rejoiced upon hearing the Mahāyāna Dharma (大乘法 [da cheng fa]),
Each freely conversing and looking at each other,
With boundless praise, they returned to their own lands.
Men and women from the four directions,
Who were bound by ghosts and demons,
With exposed heads and bare bodies, and deranged minds,
Would all be cured upon seeing the Buddha's (佛母 [fu mu]) mother.
All who suffered from yellow phlegm and leprosy,
Blindness, deafness, muteness, and various other illnesses,
The Buddha's (佛 [fu]) mother would stretch out her hand and touch their heads,
And all their illnesses would immediately disappear.
Or if there were those in critical condition far away,
She would break a blade of grass and give it to them as a token,
As soon as the token reached the sick person, they would recover immediately,
All beings in the world received blessings.
Due to the Dharma King of Physicians (法醫王 [fa yi wang]) being in the womb,
Suffering beings were all at peace and joyful,
The Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) herself observed the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) body,
Like seeing the bright moon in the sky.
His form was subtle and exceedingly majestic,
She was joyful and delighted, her mind at peace,
No longer troubled by greed, anger, or ignorance,
Nor by desire, jealousy, or harm.
Unaffected by hunger, thirst, cold, or heat,
Her body and mind were tranquil and free from all afflictions,
Humans and devas (天 [tian]) saw each other,
Music played by itself without being struck.
The kingdom was peaceful and very secure,
Her retinue was joyful and free from harm,
Dragons and devas (天 [tian]) brought timely rain,
Grasses, trees, flowers, and fruits all bloomed.
All necessities were given out generously,
The royal palace rained down treasures for seven days,
At that time, there were no poor or needy people,
Like Indra's (帝釋 [di shi]) Joyful Garden (歡喜園 [huan xi yuan]).
The King practiced the Dharma (法行 [fa xing]) and upheld pure precepts,
Though in the palace, he was like in a forest,
Because the Holy Queen (聖后 [sheng hou]) conceived the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]),
He would always enter the inner palace to personally comfort her."

The Sutra of Extensive Great Adornment, Scroll Two
