[0543c25] At that time, the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "Having thus observed the lineage, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) then ascended a great hall in the Tuṣita Heaven (兜率天宮 [dou lu tian gong]) called High Banner (高幢 [gao chuang]), which was sixty-four yojanas (由旬 [you xun]) in length and width. The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) then addressed the assembly of devas (天眾 [tian zhong]), saying: 'You should all gather and listen to the last Dharma Gate (法門 [fa men]) I will explain. This Dharma Gate (法門 [fa men]) is called the Instruction, Contemplation, and Descent of Skillful Means (教誡思惟遷沒方便下生之相 [jiao jie si wei qian mei fang bian xia sheng zhi xiang]).' At that time, all the devas (兜率天子 [dou lu tian zi]) and devis (諸天女 [zhu tian nu]) of Tuṣita (兜率 [dou lu]), hearing this, all gathered like clouds. By the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) divine power, a bodhimaṇḍa (道場 [dao chang]) was created in this hall, equal in size to the four continents (四天下 [si tian xia]), and adorned with various treasures. All who saw it were filled with joy. At that time, the devas (諸天子 [zhu tian zi]) of the Desire Realm (欲界 [yu jie]) and the Form Realm (色界 [se jie]), seeing this bodhimaṇḍa (道場 [dao chang]) so magnificent and beautiful, regarded their own dwellings as tombs. The Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) merits, born from his wholesome roots, produced a superb lion's throne (師子之座 [shi zi zhi zuo]), adorned with gold, silver, and various precious jewels, covered with soft, priceless heavenly garments. Heavenly incense was burned, and heavenly flowers were scattered. Countless hundreds of thousands of precious lights shone brightly, with a great jeweled net covering it. Jeweled bells swayed, emitting harmonious sounds. Countless jeweled canopies and various silk banners, wonderfully adorned with various banners and streamers, were arrayed around. Countless hundreds of thousands of flower garlands and embroidered sashes adorned it. Countless hundreds of thousands of heavenly maidens offered various songs and dances. These heavenly melodies proclaimed the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) immeasurable virtues. He was protected by countless hundreds of thousands of the Four Great Heavenly Kings (四大天王 [si da tian wang]), surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands of Śakras (釋提桓因 [shi ti huan yin]), praised by countless hundreds of thousands of Brahmā Heavenly Kings (大梵天王 [da fan tian wang]), and his lion's throne (師子座 [shi zi zuo]) was borne by countless hundreds of thousands of kotis (拘胝 [ju zhi]) of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]). Moreover, he was guarded and mindful of by countless hundreds of thousands of kotis (拘胝 [ju zhi]) of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of Buddha Tathāgatas (諸佛如來 [zhu fu ru lai]) from the ten directions. This lion's throne (師子座 [shi zi zuo]) arose from the provisions of merit and blessings from countless hundreds of thousands of kotis (拘胝 [ju zhi]) of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of kalpas (劫 [jie]) of Pāramitās (波羅蜜 [bo luo mi])."

[0545a28] "Bhikkhus! As the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) expounded these Bright Gates of Dharma (諸法明門 [zhu fa ming men]), in that assembly, eighty-four thousand devas (天子 [tian zi]) generated the Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi mind (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti xin]); thirty-two thousand devas (天子 [tian zi]) attained the non-arising Dharma patience (無生法忍 [wu sheng fa ren]); and thirty-six thousand nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of devas (天子 [tian zi]) became far from dust and defilement in all dharmas (諸法中 [zhu fa zhong]), and attained the pure Dharma eye (法眼淨 [fa yan jing]). The Tuṣita devas (兜率諸天 [dou lu zhu tian]) all scattered wondrous flowers, which piled up to their knees. Bhikkhus! The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) further wished to fill the assembly of devas (諸天眾 [zhu tian zhong]) with deep joy, and spoke in verses:
"'The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) is about to descend,
Dwelling in the Tuṣita Palace (兜率宮 [dou lu gong]),
He admonishes the assembly of devas (諸天眾 [zhu tian zhong]),
'You must not be negligent.
What your hearts now delight in,
Subtle and adorned with jewels,
Comes from the cause of pure karma,
Leading to these wondrous fruits.
Therefore, you should reflect on the reward,
Lest your karma cease and dissolve,
Sinking into evil destinies,
Enduring boundless suffering.
The Dharma (法 [fa]) I have shown you,
You should hold it with reverence,
Exert yourselves diligently in practice,
And you will attain the unconditioned bliss.
All desires are impermanent,
False like a dream,
Like an illusion, like a mirage,
Like lightning, like a heap of foam.
Desire is insatiable,
Like drinking salty water when thirsty.
Only by obtaining supra-mundane wisdom,
Can one truly be content.
Heavenly maidens entertaining each other,
Are like a gathering at a play,
Meeting in a city,
Briefly gathering and then scattering.
Conditioned phenomena are not constant companions,
Nor are they true good friends.
Only the undefiled conduct,
Will always follow you.
You should unite in harmony,
With minds of loving-kindness and compassion for benefit,
Diligently seek all wholesome dharmas (善法 [shan fa]),
And eventually remove afflictions.
Always be mindful of the Buddha (佛 [fu]), Dharma (法 [fa]), and Saṅgha (僧 [seng]),
Diligently and without negligence,
Generosity (施 [shi]), morality (戒 [jie]), extensive learning (多聞 [duo wen]), patience (忍 [ren]),
All will be perfected.
Contemplate all dharmas (諸法 [zhu fa]) rationally,
Arising from causes and conditions,
Impermanent, suffering, and empty,
Without master and without self.
Observe my divine power,
Eloquence, wisdom, and so on,
Pure karma, non-negligence,
Achieved through extensive learning and precepts.
I cultivate extensive learning and precepts,
You should follow and learn,
Generosity (施 [shi]), morality (戒 [jie]), and discipline (調伏 [diao fu]),
With a compassionate mind, be not negligent.
Rely on meaning, do not cling to words,
Practice as stated,
Firmly and diligently cultivate,
To benefit all sentient beings.
Always know your own faults,
Do not observe the faults of others,
What is not done by me is not accomplished by itself,
What is done by them is not received by me.
Consider past kalpas,
The suffering of wandering in saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]),
Always treading the wrong path,
Saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]) deviates from Nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]).
Now you are free from all difficulties,
Born in heaven, meeting good friends,
And hear the supreme Dharma (勝法 [sheng fa]),
Eliminating all craving and delusion.
Abandon arrogance and pride,
Be gentle and upright,
You should diligently cultivate the right path,
And definitively attain Nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]).
With the lamp of wisdom,
Extinguish the darkness of ignorance,
With supreme adamantine wisdom,
Break the latent defilements of affliction.
I have obtained boundless Dharma (法 [fa]),
I will proclaim it to you,
Such boundless Dharma (法 [fa]),
How can you all practice it completely?
When I attain Bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]),
I will then sprinkle the elixir,
If your minds are pure,
I will impart the supreme Dharma (勝法 [sheng fa]).' "
The Lalitavistara Sutra, Volume 1
