[0516c27] The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "At that time, the Bodhisattva emitted a light named Dispelling Mara's Palace Grounds. This light universally illuminated the three thousand Buddha lands, pervading everywhere, shining upon Mara's palace and covering it completely. From this light, Mara Papiyan heard this teaching, that a great pure being, for countless kalpas, had accumulated merits, abandoned kingdoms and kings, and out of compassion for the true Dharma, wished to attain nectar. He was under the Buddha tree, having already delivered himself, he would deliver others. Having already transcended the three realms, he would liberate others. Having already found peace, he would bring peace to all. Having already attained nirvana, he would lead others to nirvana. Residing in solitude, protecting all evil destinies so that none remain, becoming the master of all devas and humans. He had attained supernatural powers, forever departed from all evil destinies so that none remain, becoming the master of all devas and humans. He had attained supernatural powers and forever gained great peace, bringing nectar-like peace to all. 'He will empty your realm, put a yoke on your neck, making you powerless, causing you to lose all your retinue, your mind will be blocked and you will not know what to do. He will cause the rain of Dharma to nourish all.'"

[0517a10] The Buddha said to the bhikṣus: "At that time, Mara Papiyan, hearing this verse, saw thirty-two transformations in his dream: 1. He saw his palace dark and unclear; 2. He saw his palace muddy and unclean; 3. He saw his palace ruined and scattered, with thorns growing; 4. He saw himself terrified, his hair standing on end, fleeing and scattering; 5. He saw himself confused, losing his way and entering evil paths with thorns, tiles, and stones; 6. He saw that the trees in his backyard bore no flowers or fruits; 7. He saw his pond dry up, with no lotus flowers; 8. He saw all ducks, geese, mandarin ducks, peacocks, sorrowful larks, and all birds and beasts without feathers or wings; 9. He saw his great drums, konghou (harps), and musical instruments broken, severed, and discarded on the ground; 10. He saw his beloved wives and retinues sleeping in separate places; 11. He saw himself falling from his bed, breaking his head and face; 12. He saw that the Mara sons, mighty in spiritual power, all came to bow down and take refuge in the Bodhisattva; 13. He saw Mara's four daughters confused and losing their youth, transforming into old women; 14. He saw his own body and clothes covered in mud and dust; 15. He saw his walls, windows, pavilions, and gates tilting and unstable; 16. He saw all his army of ghosts, yakṣas, evil spirits, Gandharvas, devas, and Nāga retinues, their hands, feet, bodies, and heads all falling to the ground; 17. He saw the devas of the desire realm, Indra, Yama devas, Tuṣita devas, Nirmanarati devas, Paranirmita-vaśavartin devas, all leaving him and not obeying his commands; 18. He saw the multitude residing in Mara's palace covering their heads; 19. He saw that Maheśvara no longer obeyed him; 20. He saw his retinue not submitting to him; 21. He saw his crown, turban, pearls, and necklaces spontaneously burning with fire; 22. He saw Mara's palace spontaneously shaking; 23. He saw all trees being cut down and falling to the ground; 24. He saw all desirable karmas no longer appearing; 25. He saw his water breaking and destroying his palace; 26. He saw the river collapsing and inundating people's homes; 27. He saw all heavenly kings coming to take refuge in the Bodhisattva and observing his countenance; 28. He saw his bed spontaneously moving outside; 29. He saw his remaining retinue leaving him and going to the Bodhisattva; 30. He saw all auspicious cooking stoves destroyed; 31. He saw all Brahma kings and Mara's officials proclaiming ill omens; 32. He saw all sentient beings in the ten directions taking refuge in the Bodhisattva and receiving his teachings."

[0517b10] The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Mara, seeing these transformations in his dream, awoke in terror, his hair standing on end. He summoned his ministers and all his troops, and told them what he had seen in his dream. Mara had a wise minister named Śāntaka (Peaceful). The king asked this minister and all the assembled: 'In my dream, I heard a voice spontaneously from the sky, saying that the Śākya son, with excellent bodily marks, having cultivated diligent practices for six years, would go to the Buddha tree and attain perfect enlightenment. After awakening from the dream, I thought to myself: "This Bodhisattva will deliver countless billions of people, he will surely empty my realm so that nothing remains, I must restrict him. With such virtue, he will immediately attain Buddhahood, becoming known as the Dharma King, to whom all will return. What means can I use to cut off his path and prevent him from succeeding?" With a great army, he went to subdue him.' Therefore, the verse says:
"'With a great army,
They went together to harm and eliminate him;
Then they went to his tree,
To endanger and kill this śramaṇa.
Bringing the four divisions of troops,
Wishing me to be revered;
Fight with me,
Quickly send them forth.
Pratyekabuddhas and Arhats,
Fill the world;
Eliminating all my troops,
Making them powerless.
Thus he will attain Buddhahood,
The Dharma King of heaven and earth;
His followers are very flourishing,
The Buddha will never be cut off.'
“ ‘以將大兵眾, 共行害除之;
將四部之兵, 其欲愛敬我;
緣覺及羅漢, 遍滿於天下;

What have you seen and heard today?

[0517c08] Mara's son, the guide, went to his father and reported: 'Although I convened the multitude and proclaimed my voice, it gained no victory, causing no evil. The minds of the multitude were born, some born, some unborn, thus echoing oneself under the tree. Now the auspicious signs are manifested, it is auspicious, not to be lightly regarded. I perceive that he will surely be peaceful and possess all auspiciousness, and do little to prevent sin from arising. I see the tranquil one whom I guide, not performing magic, not with self and ego, acting as an accomplished and auspicious true guide.' The guide further said: 'If one has power but does not achieve it, becoming naturally weak, a brave person is born who triumphs with compassionate action. Even if fireflies fill the three thousand worlds, with a single speck of light, they can universally illuminate the ten directions. If one's mind harbors defilement, practices delusive paths, and is confused, and light-mindedly knows little, that illness is difficult to cure, and even billions of Buddhas cannot heal it, it cannot be moved.'"

[0517c18] The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Thereupon, Papiyan disregarded the guide's words and summoned his thousand sons—five hundred of his sons, those like the guide, who delighted in virtue and took refuge in the Bodhisattva, stood to the Bodhisattva's right; the other five hundred sons, who followed Mara's teachings, stood to the Bodhisattva's left—at that time, Mara Papiyan told his sons: 'You must unite your minds and devise a plan: by what power can we defeat the Bodhisattva?' The son on the right, named Guide, replied to his father Papiyan with a verse:
"'Why should sons contend for what is good?
Relying on their own reasoning to cut off the root;

[0518b28] "In short, all Mara's sons, the pure faction and the dark faction, each spoke verses. At that time, a general named Bhadrika (Virtuous Deva) spoke this verse to Mara Papiyan:
"'You know, my lord,
Śakra, the Four Kings, Kinnaras;
Asuras, Garuḍas, Yakṣas bow with ten clasped hands.
Not to mention those not deluded,
Brahma and the Abhāsvara devas;
The Śuddhāvāsa devas,
All universally take refuge.
Now all your sons,
Receive commands from the Venerable One;
These revere the Bodhisattva,
And all come here to bow down.
Now this Mara's army,
Three thousand two hundred li (about 1600 km) in circumference;
Respectfully and joyfully watching,
Their hearts filled with delight.
Seeing his joyful countenance,
Hundreds of thousands of devas rain flowers;
Countless spirits offer homage,
All devas are guest kings.
What Mara's multitude does,
Confused, the drums do not sound;
One who can return is wise,
Will surely not win.
The Buddha tree is auspicious,
Ducks, geese, and peacocks;
Fearlessly utter sorrowful sounds,
Cannot win, better to return.
Where Mara's multitude dwells,
Rain ink and dust;
The Bodhi-mandala is scented,
The wise will see and return.
The auspicious signs seen in the dream before,
Why not return after seeing them?
What can be done about it?
The place is already destroyed.
The fraudulent transforming person,
Angry at ordinary great immortals;
Diligent and highly praised,
Raining thunder, but no grass grows.
The diligent immortal returns,
Acting appropriately and harmoniously;
Because he does not harm sentient beings,
He obtains mastery over his head.
Did the King of Devas not hear?
His body's light shines far;
Going out of the country without difference,
Attaining Buddhahood and subduing defilements.
His body is so pure,
Immortals revere him;
He will go to the Most Venerable One,
And all will receive his teachings.
The white hair between his eyebrows,
If it emits light;
It covers billions of lands,
Concealing Mara's palace.
None can see the crown of his head,
Even with extreme scrutiny, cannot see;
None can bear to look,
He will achieve perfect enlightenment.
Like Sumeru and Cakravāla mountains,
Sun, moon, Indra, Brahma;
Lands, all Bodhi-mandalas,
Trees and mountains bow down.
The power of blessings, the power of wisdom,
The power of holiness, the power of diligence;
The power of patience, the power of dhyāna;
Mara's power is rendered powerless.
Like a broken vessel,
It will surely be quickly destroyed;
A lion compared to beasts,
A firefly compared to the sun and moon.
Seeking a peerless one,
Is a lion similar to a snake?
Observing the Bodhisattva,
No equal is seen.'

諸魔眾所作, 憒亂鼓不鳴;
佛樹為吉祥, 鳧鴈呰孔雀;
魔眾所住處, 雨墨及塵土;
魔眾所住處, 溝坑布[金*疾]鏫;
前所夢見瑞, 目覩何不還;
其濫衍化人, 瞋於凡大仙;
精進仙人還, 應儀能合偶;
天王不聞乎, 身相光遠照;
其身如是淨, 仙人奉敬之;
眉間白毫毛, 若演其光明;
無能見其頂, 極察不能覩;
猶須彌鐵圍, 日月天帝梵;
福力有智力, 聖力精進力;
猶如坏為器, 必當疾毀壞;
求比無等倫, 師子虺同耶;
