[0461a07] Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in the country of 迦維羅衛國 [jia wei luo wei guo] Kapilavastu, at the 釋氏精舍尼拘陀樹下 [shi shi jing she ni ju tuo shu xia] Sakya Vihara under the Nigrodha tree, with a great assembly of bhikkhus numbering twelve hundred and fifty, all of whom were Arhats—they had, from previous Buddhas, purified their Brahma-faring, all defilements were exhausted, their minds were liberated and pure, all wisdom was at their command, they clearly understood all dharmas, were freed from heavy burdens, had attained their wishes, had exhausted the three existences, had attained perfect liberation, were fully endowed with the three knowledges, and had attained the six divine powers. There were also an assembly of bhikkhunis, five hundred including 大伏愛 [da fu ai] Da Fuaie; and countless Upasakas and Upasikas from the four assemblies; and countless Brahmins and Nigganthas of various non-Buddhist schools, all gathered together. All the Four Heavenly Kings, the Trayastrimsa Heavenly King, the Yama Heavenly King, the Tushita Heavenly King, the Nirmanarati Heavenly King, the Paranirmitavashavartin Heavenly King, the Brahma Heavenly King, and even the Akanishtha Heavenly King, each with countless retinues, had all gathered. Dragon Kings, Asuras, Garudas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, each venerable deity, furthermore, each with their retinue, had all gathered. 白淨王 [bai jing wang] King Suddhodana, 無怒王 [wu nu wang] King Anuruddha, 無怨王 [wu yuan wang] King Avyayasena, 甘露淨王 [gan lu jing wang] King Amrtasuddha, and nine hundred million elders of 迦維羅衛 [jia wei luo wei] Kapilavastu, each with their officials, came at the same time to pay homage to the Buddha and sat to one side.

[0461a23] At that time, the Buddha emitted the light of the thirty-two marks and eighty excellent characteristics of his body, illuminating the entire three-thousandfold great thousand world, like the full moon shining exceptionally bright among the stars, majestic and awe-inspiring. Among all the holy ones and the entire assembly, there was a sense of doubt. Each one thought to themselves: "The Prince was born in 迦維羅衛 [jia wei luo wei] Kapilavastu, the son of 白淨王 [bai jing wang] King Suddhodana. He abandoned his home and country to seek the Dao and achieved enlightenment. Did the Buddha attain the Dao under the tree in six years? Or twelve years?" Some also thought: "What practices did he originally cultivate to achieve such loftiness? What master did he serve to gain such extraordinary reverence? What Dharma did he begin cultivating to become a Buddha?"

[0461a29] The Buddha knew that everyone had doubts, so he told 摩訶目揵連 [mo he mu qian lian] Maha Maudgalyayana: "Can you explain the origins of the Tathagata?"

[0461b02] Thereupon, 目揵連 [mu qian lian] Maudgalyayana immediately rose from his seat, straightened his robes, knelt with clasped hands, and said to the Buddha: "Yes, World-Honored One! Now, by the Buddha's majestic power and divine strength, for the sake of all, I shall elaborate on it."

[0461b05] The Buddha said: "In past lives, countless kalpas ago, I was originally an ordinary person. Since I first sought the Buddha-Dao, my spirit has taken form and pervaded the five paths of existence. One body died and another was received, going through immeasurable births and deaths. If all the grass and trees in the world were cut into counting sticks to count my past bodies, they would be insufficient! The extreme beginning and end of heaven and earth is called a kalpa, and the number of times I have experienced the formation and destruction of heaven and earth is incalculable! Therefore, I feel sorrow for worldly attachment, which flows endlessly and sinks into the ocean of desire. I alone wish to return to its source. Thus, I have exerted myself and emerged exceptionally. This is why I have diligently toiled for generations, not considering it a burden. With an open mind, I delight in tranquility, being without action and desire. I have sacrificed myself to practice dana (giving), upheld precepts with utmost sincerity, humbled myself with patience and courageously exerted diligence, concentrated my mind on profound wisdom, learned the wisdom of the sages, brought life to all under heaven with benevolence, felt sorrow for the poor and suffering, comforted the grieving, nurtured sentient beings, rescued the distressed, served all Buddhas and Pratyekabuddhas, accumulating merits and achievements beyond reckoning.

[0461b16] "Then, in the past, when 錠光佛 [ding guang fu] Dipankara Buddha appeared in the world, there was a holy king named 燈盛治 [deng sheng zhi] Ding Shengzhi (Lamp Prosperous Rule), who reigned in the country of 提和衛國 [ti he wei guo] Devavati. The people lived long lives, were compassionate, filial, benevolent, and righteous. The land was fertile and abundant, and the world was peaceful. A prince was born, named 燈光 [deng guang] Dipankara (Lamp Light), who was intelligent and far-sighted, rarely matched in the world. The holy king loved him dearly and found him extraordinary. When he was on his deathbed, he bequeathed the kingdom to the prince. The prince 燈光 [deng guang] Dipankara contemplated impermanence, transferred the kingdom to his younger brother, and immediately left home to become a Shramana. He attained enlightenment and was called the Buddha, the Unsurpassed Honored One, with divine virtue and radiant light, day and night. With an assembly of six hundred and twenty thousand bhikkhus, he traveled the world, enlightening sentient beings. When he was about to return to 提和衛國 [ti he wei guo] Devavati to liberate his relatives and the citizens of the country, he traveled with the great assembly to his homeland. At that time, the officials and ministers of the country thought that the Buddha and his great assembly were coming to attack and seize the country. They all discussed, saying: 'We should now mobilize an army and go to resist him. It is not appropriate to yield the country.' Immediately, they led their forces, intending to confront the Buddha.

[0461b27] "The Buddha, with his six divine powers, foresaw their intentions and transformed a great city, vast and majestic, to oppose their city. Out of compassion for the people of the country and wishing to liberate them, he immediately transformed the two cities into lapis lazuli, through which one could see clearly, both inside and out. He further transformed six hundred and twenty thousand bhikkhus, all appearing indistinguishable from the Buddha, demonstrating these transformations. The king, seeing this, was awestruck, his doubts resolved, and his mind submitted. He immediately went forth to the Buddha, prostrated himself, and confessed: 'My nature is dull and stubborn, and I harbored ill will towards the Buddha. I was misguided by foolish people. Please forgive me. I pray that the Buddha return to the vihara. Within seven days, I will prepare offerings and welcome the Honored One.' The Buddha knew his intention and silently returned.

The ministers replied: 'According to the Chakravarti King's custom, adorn the land for forty li, level the roads, sprinkle the ground with fragrant water, set up gold, silver, rare jewels, and seven-jewel railings, raise banners and streamers, silk canopies, and flower parasols. Decorate the city gates and streets. Play musical instruments like those in the Trayastrimsa Heaven. Scatter flowers and light lamps, burn various famous incenses, and respectfully attend to the path.' After seven days, everything was ready. The king commanded his officials and ministers to lead the procession, and he personally went to welcome the Buddha. Out of compassion for the people, the Buddha told the bhikkhus: 'Prepare to go forth and receive the invitation.' The bhikkhus received the command and went to their homeland. [0461c17] "At that time, there was a Brahmin youth named 無垢光 [wu gou guang] Vimalaprabha (Stainless Light). From a young age, he was intelligent and had great aspirations. He lived in seclusion in the mountains and forests, practicing profound meditation. He knew everything in the diagrams and prophecies. He contemplated making offerings to repay his teacher's kindness. He left to spread the Dao and passed through a village. In that village, there was a Brahmin named 不樓陀 [bu lou tuo] Pusyaratha, who was holding a grand sacrifice to the heavens for a full twelve months, providing food and offerings to eighty-four thousand Brahmin disciples. At the end of the year, he distributed gifts of gold, silver, precious jewels, chariots, horses, cattle, sheep, clothing, silk, sandals, seven-jewel canopies, monk's staffs, and water pots. The most intelligent and wise should receive these items. Before seven days were complete, the Bodhisattva 儒童 [ru tong] Jatakamala entered that assembly and discussed the Dao and expounded on its meaning for seven days and seven nights. At that time, the assembly was immensely joyful, and the host, the elder, was extremely happy, giving his daughter 賢意 [xian yi] Bhaddayika to the Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva did not accept her, but only took an umbrella, a monk's staff, a water pot, sandals, and one thousand pieces of gold and silver coins each, and returned them to his original teacher. His teacher rejoiced and distributed them.

Thereupon, the Bodhisattva entered the city, diligently seeking offerings. In a short while, he had searched everywhere, but could find nothing. Immediately, the Buddha arrived, surrounded by kings, ministers, elders, householders, and their retinues, in thousands of layers. The Bodhisattva wanted to go forward and scatter flowers, but could not get through. The Buddha, knowing his sincere intention, transformed the ground into mud, and the crowd parted, allowing him to go forward. He then scattered five flowers, all of which remained in the air, transforming into a canopy of flowers, seventy li in size. Two flowers rested on the Buddha's shoulders, as if rooted. The Bodhisattva rejoiced and spread his hair on the ground: 'I wish the Honored One would tread on it.' The Buddha said: 'How can I tread on it?' The Bodhisattva replied: 'Only the Buddha can tread on it!' The Buddha then stepped on it, stopped, and smiled. Five-colored light emerged from his mouth, seven feet from his mouth, dividing into two parts: one light circled the Buddha three times, illuminating the three-thousandfold great thousand Buddha-fields, leaving nothing unilluminated, and then re-entered his crown; one light descended into the eighteen hells, and all suffering was immediately alleviated.

With great compassion practice the four kindnesses,
Bestow the sweet dew of the Dharma,
And eradicate the diseases of the three poisons.'

[0462c07] "The Bodhisattva 能仁 [neng ren] Shakyamuni, served 錠光 [ding guang] Dipankara Buddha until his Nirvana. He upheld pure precepts, protected the True Dharma, practiced loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, gave generously with benevolence, benefited others equally, and tirelessly rescued those in need. At the end of his life, he was born in the Tushita Heaven. Wishing to save all and deliver the blind and deluded, he descended from above to become a Chakravarti King, a flying emperor, attended by seven treasures. What are these seven? First, the golden wheel treasure; second, the divine jewel treasure; third, the jewel woman treasure; fourth, the treasury minister; fifth, the military minister; sixth, the blue horse treasure with jewel mane and tail; seventh, the white elephant treasure with jewel tusks and tail.

[0462c13] "The golden wheel treasure has a thousand spokes, intricately carved, filled with various jewels, radiating light that surpasses the sun and moon. It rests above the king. When the king wills it, the wheel turns, traveling throughout the world in an instant. Therefore, it is called the golden wheel treasure. The divine jewel treasure, on the twenty-ninth day when the moon is absent at night, when the jewel is suspended in the air above the country, illuminates the interior and exterior of the country, regardless of its size, as if it were day. Therefore, it is called the divine jewel treasure. The jewel woman treasure's body is warm in winter and cool in summer. Her mouth smells of blue lotus flowers, and her body of sandalwood. Her food is self-digesting, and she has no problems with large or small excretions, nor any unclean menstrual discharge. Her hair is equal to her body, neither long nor short, neither white nor black, neither fat nor thin. Therefore, she is called the jewel woman treasure. The treasury minister is one who, when the king wishes for gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, mani jewels, pearls, or coral treasures, raises his hand towards the earth, and the earth produces seven treasures. Towards water, and water produces seven treasures. Towards mountains, and mountains produce seven treasures. Towards rocks, and rocks produce seven treasures. Therefore, he is called the treasury minister. The military minister is one who, when the king desires four kinds of troops—cavalry, elephant troops, chariots, or infantry—the minister reports to the king: 'How many kinds of troops do you desire? A thousand, ten thousand, or countless?' In the blink of an eye, the troops are ready, their formation strict and orderly. Therefore, he is called the military minister. The blue horse treasure is a horse of blue-black color, with a jewel-studded mane and tail. When washed and brushed, the jewels fall off, but in an instant, they grow back as before. The jewels are fresh and clean, surpassing those before. Its neighing can be heard for one yojana. When the king rides it, he can travel throughout the world in a single day, leaving in the morning and returning in the evening, without fatigue. The dust touched by its hooves all turns into gold sand. Therefore, it is called the blue horse treasure. The white elephant treasure is white with blue eyes, its seven limbs stand evenly, its strength surpasses a hundred elephants, its mane and tail are studded with jewels, both fresh and clean. It has six tusks, and its tusks are of seven treasures. When the king rides it, he can travel throughout the world in a single day, leaving in the morning and returning in the evening, without effort or fatigue. If it crosses water, the water does not move, and its feet do not get wet. Therefore, it is called the white elephant treasure.

The king had a thousand sons, who were benevolent and courageous, each worth a thousand men. The Holy King ruled righteously, upheld the ten good precepts, and taught the people. The world was peaceful, the winds and rains were timely, and the five grains ripened. Eating them brought few illnesses, and their taste was like sweet dew, with abundant strength. There were only seven illnesses: one, cold; two, heat; three, hunger; four, thirst; five, defecation; six, urination; seven, desires of the mind. When the Holy King's life ended, he ascended to the Brahma Heaven, becoming a Brahma King. [0463a19] "The Bodhisattva diligently cultivated for three asamkhyeya kalpas. When the kalpa was about to end, out of compassion for all sentient beings who endlessly revolved, he threw himself to feed the starving tiger, courageously and diligently, surpassing nine kalpas. The Bodhisattva 能仁 [neng ren] Shakyamuni, for ninety-one kalpas, cultivated morality, learned the Buddha's intentions, practiced the six perfections (paramitas) to their utmost—dana (giving), sila (precepts), kshanti (patience), virya (diligence), dhyana (meditation), and prajna (wisdom)—with skillful means, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. He nurtured sentient beings as if they were his own infants, served all Buddhas, accumulated immeasurable virtues, and diligently cultivated through countless kalpas, traversing the ten bhumis (grounds). In his last life as a Bodhisattva, his merits were complete, his aspirations fulfilled, and his divine wisdom immeasurable. When the time came, he was destined to descend and become a Buddha. In the Tushita Heaven, he observed with four kinds of contemplation: observing the land, observing his parents, what country he should be born in, and whom he should first liberate. 白淨王 [bai jing wang] King Suddhodana was his father from countless previous lives. Two daughters of the Koliya Kshatriya were bathing in the royal garden pond at that time. The Bodhisattva raised his hand and said: 'These are my mothers from lifetime to lifetime. I shall go and be born to them.' At that time, there were five hundred Brahmins, all with five divine powers, who flew over the palace city but could not pass. They were startled and said to each other: 'Our divine feet can pass through stone walls, why can we not pass now?' The Brahmin master said: 'Do you see these two girls? One will give birth to a great man with thirty-two marks; the other will give birth to a man with thirty marks. It is their majestic power that causes us to lose our divine feet.' At that time, this sound was heard throughout the world.
