[0443c22] Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the 迦蘭陀竹園 [jia lan tuo zhu yuan] (Jiālántuó Zhúyuán - Kalandaka Bamboo Grove) in 王舍城 [wang she cheng] (Wángshě Chéng - Rajagriha), together with twelve hundred and fifty 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikṣus) and a hundred 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattvas).

[0443c23] At that time, among the assembly, there was a 菩薩比丘 [pu sa bi qiu] (púsà bǐqiū - Bodhisattva Bhikshu) named 婆須蜜多 [po xu mi duo] (Póxūmìduō - Vasumitra). He roamed around the Bamboo Grove, climbing up and down trees, making sounds like a monkey, or holding three bells and performing a 那羅 [na luo] (Nàluó - Naraka) dance. At that time, many 長者 [zhang zhe] (zhǎngzhě - elders) and travelers gathered to watch him. When the crowd gathered, he ascended into the air, leaped onto treetops, and made monkey sounds. Eighty-four thousand golden monkeys from 耆闍崛山 [qi du jue shan] (Qíshéjué Shān - Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain) gathered around the 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattva). The 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattva) performed various transformations to make them happy. At that time, all the great multitude said: "沙門釋子 [sha men shi zi] (Shāmén Shìzǐ - Sakyan renunciants) are like performers, deluding the people. Their evil deeds are unbelievable, and they even engage in unwholesome acts with birds and beasts." Such evil rumors spread throughout 王舍城 [wang she cheng] (Wángshě Chéng - Rajagriha).

[0444a02] There was a 梵志 [fan zhi] (Fànzhì - Brahmin) who reported to 大王頻婆娑羅 [da wang pin po suo luo] (Dàwáng Pínpósuōluó - King Bimbisara), saying: "Great King! These 沙門釋子 [sha men shi zi] (Shāmén Shìzǐ - Sakyan renunciants) are committing unwholesome acts, even performing 那羅 [na luo] (Nàluó - Naraka) dances with birds and beasts." The King heard this and disliked the 諸釋子 [zhu shi zi] (zhū shìzǐ - Sakyan renunciants). He immediately ordered the 長者迦蘭陀 [zhang zhe jia lan tuo] (zhǎngzhě Jiālántuó - elder Kalandaka): "These 諸釋子 [zhu shi zi] (zhū shìzǐ - Sakyan renunciants) are gathering many monkeys in your garden. What are they doing? Does the 如來 [ru lai] (Rúlái - Tathagata) know?" The 長者 [zhang zhe] (zhǎngzhě - elder) reported to the King: "婆須蜜多 [po xu mi duo] (Póxūmìduō - Vasumitra) is performing transformations to make all the monkeys happy. The 諸天 [zhu tian] (zhū tiān - devas) are raining flowers to make offerings. What he is doing, your minister does not know."

[0444a08] At that time, 大王頻婆娑羅 [da wang pin po suo luo] (Dàwáng Pínpósuōluó - King Bimbisara) rode his famous elephant, with escorts preceding and following him, and went to the Buddha's abode. When he arrived at 迦蘭陀竹園 [jia lan tuo zhu yuan] (Jiālántuó Zhúyuán - Kalandaka Bamboo Grove), he dismounted his elephant. From afar, he saw the 世尊 [shi zun] (Shìzūn - World-Honored One) on a high pavilion, his body purplish-gold, sixteen feet tall, seated on a seven-jeweled lotus, adorned with the 三十二相 [san shi er xiang] (sānshí'èr xiàng - thirty-two auspicious marks) and 八十種好 [ba shi zhong hao] (bāshí zhǒng hǎo - eighty minor characteristics), all radiating light like a purplish-gold mountain; he was surrounded by golden light within a blazing fire, making all the great assembly appear golden. The 尊者婆須蜜多 [zun zhe po xu mi duo] (zūnzhě Póxūmìduō - Venerable Vasumitra) and the eighty-four thousand monkeys also appeared golden.

[0444a14] At that time, the 諸獼猴 [zhu mi hou] (zhū míhóu - monkeys), seeing the Great King approaching, sang, danced, beat drums, and blew conch shells, performing various transformations. Some picked flowers and offered them to the King. The Great King, having seen this, together with the great multitude, went to the Buddha's abode, paid homage to the Buddha, circumambulated him three times to the right, and then sat down to one side. He said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! What merits did these 諸獼猴 [zhu mi hou] (zhū míhóu - monkeys) accumulate in their past lives to have golden bodies? What sins did they commit to be born among animals? What merits did the 尊者婆須蜜多 [zun zhe po xu mi duo] (zūnzhě Póxūmìduō - Venerable Vasumitra) cultivate in his past lives to be born in an elder's family, leave home for a life of faith, and practice the 道 [dao] (dào - Way)? What sins did he commit that, although born human with complete faculties, he does not uphold the precepts and associates with these monkeys? His singing and speech are entirely like those of a monkey, causing the 諸外道 [zhu wai dao] (zhū wàidào - external practitioners) to mock us. Only the 天尊 [tian zun] (Tiānzūn - Heavenly Honored One), please, out of compassion for us, clearly explain this so we may be enlightened."

[0444a24] The Buddha told the Great King: "Listen carefully, listen carefully! Reflect well on it! I shall explain it to you in detail. Innumerable kalpas ago, before that time, a Buddha appeared in the world named 然燈 [ran deng] (Rándēng - Dipankara), complete with the 十號 [shi hao] (shíhào - ten titles). After that Buddha's passing, there were 諸比丘 [zhu bi qiu] (zhū bǐqiū - bhikṣus) who practiced the Buddha's Dharma in the mountains and marshes, observing the 阿練若十二頭陀 [a lian ruo shi er tou tuo] (ā liàn ruò shí'èr tóutuó - twelve dhutangas of an aranya practitioner) and strictly upholding the precepts, guarding them as one guards one's eyes. Because of this, they attained the 阿羅漢道 [a luo han dao] (āluóhàn dào - Arhat Path), possessing the 三明 [san ming] (sānmíng - three insights), 六通 [liu tong] (liùtōng - six psychic powers), and 八解脫 [ba jie tuo] (bājiětuō - eight liberations). At that time, there was a monkey in the empty marsh that came to an 羅漢 [luo han] (Luóhàn - Arhat). Seeing the 羅漢 [luo han] (Luóhàn - Arhat) sitting in meditation, it took the 羅漢 [luo han] (Luóhàn - Arhat)'s meditation mat, draped it like a 袈裟 [jia sha] (jiāshā - monastic robe), exposing its right shoulder according to the 沙門法 [sha men fa] (shāmén fǎ - monastic tradition), and held an incense burner, circling the 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu). At that time, the 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu) awoke from his meditation, saw that this monkey had a good and virtuous heart, and snapped his fingers, saying to the monkey: '法子 [fa zi] (Fǎzǐ - Dharma Son)! You should now arouse the 無上道心 [wu shang dao xin] (wúshàng dào xīn - unsurpassed aspiration for enlightenment).' The monkey, hearing this, rejoiced greatly, prostrated itself, respectfully saluted the 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu), got up, and then gathered flowers and scattered them over the 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu).

[0444b06] "At that time, the 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu) then taught the monkey the 三歸依 [san gui yi] (sān guīyī - Three Refuges), saying: '法子 [fa zi] (Fǎzǐ - Dharma Son)! You should now follow and learn the Buddhadharma of the three ages, and you should seek to receive the 三歸依 [san gui yi] (sān guīyī - Three Refuges) and the 五戒 [wu jie] (wǔjiè - Five Precepts).' At that time, the monkey immediately got up, put its palms together, and said: 'Great Virtue! Remember that I now wish to take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.' The 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu) said: 'You should take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, and take refuge in the Sangha.' The second and third times he also said the same: 'I have taken refuge in the Buddha, I have taken refuge in the Dharma, I have taken refuge in the Sangha.' The second and third times he also said the same: 'Next, you should confess.' He told the monkey: 'You, in your previous lives, from innumerable kalpas ago, have been greedy, angry, ignorant, held wrong views, were jealous, arrogant, slandered, broke precepts, and committed all kinds of evil deeds, fulfilling the 十惡 [shi e] (shí è - ten unwholesome actions). You committed the 五逆罪 [wu ni zui] (wǔ nì zuì - five heinous crimes), slandered the 方等經 [fang deng jing] (fāngděng jīng - Vaipulya sutras), engaged in sexual misconduct with 比丘尼 [bi qiu ni] (bǐqiūnī - bhikṣunis), stole Sangha property, and committed countless and boundless serious offenses. My current life is complete, and I will not undergo further rebirths. A 大阿羅漢 [da a luo han] (dà āluóhàn - Great Arhat) can remove the immeasurable serious offenses of sentient beings. Why is that? When I was first born, I was born with great compassion. The Dharma of the worthy and holy ones of the three ages is also like this, born with great compassion in the world.' Thus, earnestly, three times he explained to the monkey how to confess and expiate its sins. After confessing, he told the monkey: '法子 [fa zi] (Fǎzǐ - Dharma Son)! You are now pure; this is called 布薩 [bu sa] (bùsà - Uposatha). From today until the end of your life, receive the precept of not killing. All Buddhas and 諸阿羅漢 [zhu a luo han] (zhū āluóhàn - Arhats) of the three ages will never kill living beings; their body, speech, and mind are pure. You should also be like this.'

He then took heavenly flowers down to the empty marsh to make offerings to the 羅漢 [luo han] (Luóhàn - Arhat). The 羅漢 [luo han] (Luóhàn - Arhat), seeing him, smiled and said: '天王 [tian wang] (Tiānwáng - Heavenly King)! The retribution of good and evil follows like a shadow, never separating.' At that time, the 阿羅漢 [a luo han] (āluóhàn - Arhat) spoke a verse:
"'Karma adorns the body,
Following one everywhere one goes.
The Dharma is not lost, like a contract,
Karma is like one who owes wealth.
You are now born in heaven,
Due to the karma of the 五戒 [wu jie] (wǔjiè - Five Precepts).
Your former body fell as a monkey,
From the nature of breaking precepts.
Upholding precepts is the ladder to heaven,
Breaking precepts leads to boiling cauldrons.
I see those who uphold precepts,
Whose bodies are adorned with light.
With splendid seven-jeweled pavilions,
And heavenly beings as servants.
With precious beds and curtains,
And 摩尼 [mo ni] (móní - mani) flower garlands.
Meeting future Buddhas,
They delight in expounding the excellent Dharma.
I see those who break precepts,
Falling into 泥犁 [ni li] (nílí - hell),
Where iron plows cultivate their tongues,
And they lie on iron beds.
Molten copper flows from all sides,
Burning and cooking their bodies;
Or they are on mountains of knives,
Forests of swords, and boiling feces,
Rivers of ash, cold ice prisons,
Swallowing iron balls and molten copper.
Such suffering,
Is their constant garland.
If one wishes to escape all difficulties,
And not fall into the 三惡道 [san e dao] (sān èdào - three evil paths),
To travel the path of 天人 [tian ren] (tiānrén - devas and humans),
And transcend to attain 涅槃 [nie pan] (nièpán - nirvana),
One should diligently uphold pure precepts,
Practice generosity and cultivate a pure life.'

[0444c29] "At that time, after the 阿羅漢 [a luo han] (āluóhàn - Arhat) spoke this verse, he became silent. The monkey 天子 [tian zi] (tiānzǐ - devaputra) said: 'Great Virtue! In my previous life, what sinful karma did I commit to be born as a monkey? And what merits did I accumulate to meet Great Virtue, escape animal existence, and be born in heaven?' The 羅漢 [luo han] (Luóhàn - Arhat) replied: 'Listen carefully now! Reflect well on it! Innumerable ages ago, in this 閻浮提 [yan fu ti] (Yánfú Tí - Jambudvīpa), a Buddha appeared in the world named 寶慧如來 [bao hui ru lai]、應供 [ying gong]、正遍知 [zheng bian zhi] (Bǎohuì Rúlái, Yìnggòng, Zhèngbiànzhī - Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, Jewel Wisdom), complete with the 十號 [shi hao] (shíhào - ten titles), appearing in the world. After he demonstrated 般涅槃 [ban nie pan] (bōnièpán - parinirvana), during the 像法 [xiang fa] (xiàngfǎ - Dharma-resemblance period), there was a 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu) named 蓮華藏 [lian hua cang] (Liánhuázàng - Lotus Treasury), who had many kings, elders, and lay practitioners as close friends. He lived a life of false livelihood and flattery, not upholding the precepts. When his body perished and his life ended, because of his deceit, he fell into the 阿鼻大地獄 [a bi da de yu] (ābì dà dìyù - Avīci great hell) as quickly as a strong man can bend and extend his arm. His body spread throughout the eighteen sections [of hell] like a blooming lotus. Hot iron balls rained down from above, entering his head. Hundreds of thousands of fierce fires and hot iron wheels descended from the sky. The lifespan in the boundless 阿鼻地獄 [a bi de yu] (ābì dìyù - Avīci hell) is one kalpa; when the kalpa ended, he was reborn again. Thus, he successively passed through various great hells for a full eighty-four thousand kalpas. Emerging from hell, he was reborn among hungry ghosts for five hundred lives, swallowing molten copper and eating hot iron balls. After eighty-four thousand years, he emerged from the hungry ghost realm, and for five hundred lives, he was always a cow. Then for five hundred lives, he was born as a camel; for another five hundred lives, he was born as a pig; for another five hundred lives, he was born as a dog; and for another five hundred lives, he was born as a monkey. Because of his former offerings to the 持戒比丘 [chi jie bi qiu] (chíjiè bǐqiū - precept-holding bhikshu) and the solemn vows he made, he encountered me again, was purified, and was reborn in heaven. The 持戒比丘 [chi jie bi qiu] (chíjiè bǐqiū - precept-holding bhikshu) was I, and the undisciplined 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu) was you."

[0445b03] The Buddha told the Great King: "Do you wish to know who the 師子月佛 [shi zi yue fu] (Shīzi Yuè Fó - Lion Moon Buddha) of that land is? In this assembly, it is 婆須蜜多比丘 [po xu mi duo bi qiu] (Póxūmìduō bǐqiū - Bhikshu Vasumitra)." At that time, 頻婆娑羅 [pin po suo luo] (Pínpósuōluó - Bimbisara), hearing this, immediately rose, put his palms together, sweating all over, weeping and shedding tears, repenting and blaming himself. He prostrated himself before 婆須蜜多 [po xu mi duo] (Póxūmìduō - Vasumitra), touching his head to the ground, and took his feet as a gesture of respect, confessing his previous sins. The Buddha told the Great King: "Do you wish to know who these eighty-four thousand golden monkeys are? They were, in the time of 拘樓秦佛 [ju lou qin fu] (Jūlóuqín Fó - Krakucchanda Buddha), eighty-four thousand 比丘尼 [bi qiu ni] (bǐqiūnī - bhikṣunis) from the two countries of 波羅奈國 [bo luo nai guo] (Bōluónài Guó - Vārāṇasī) and 俱睒彌國 [ju shan mi guo] (Jùshǎn Mí Guó - Kauśāmbī). They engaged in unwholesome acts, maintaining intimate relations with laypeople, violating serious precepts, adorning their bodies like 乾闥婆女 [gan ta po nu] (gāntápónǚ - Gandharva girls) without shame. They used lust as a garland, and their violations of precepts as flower wreaths. They raised the banner of arrogance, beat the drum of pride, played the lute of heedlessness, and sang songs of evil sounds. They were foolish and ignorant, like deluded monkeys, viewing good, virtuous, and upright 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikṣus) as enemies.

Speaking evil falsehoods and fabricating hells!' At that time, the 阿羅漢 [a luo han] (āluóhàn - Arhat) saw these evil people developing unwholesome thoughts. She immediately arose with a compassionate body, ascended into the sky, and performed eighteen transformations. At that time, these evil people, seeing the transformations, each removed their golden bracelets and scattered them over the 阿羅漢尼 [a luo han ni] (āluóhàn ní - Arhat bhikṣuni): 'May we be reborn in every life with golden bodies. We now repent all the evil we have done. We only pray for your compassionate pity upon us and accept our offerings.' At that time, that 阿羅漢比丘尼 [a luo han bi qiu ni] (āluóhàn bǐqiūnī - Arhat bhikṣuni) descended from the sky and accepted the various offerings of those evil women. At that time, those evil people, when their bodies perished and their lives ended, fell into 阿鼻獄 [a bi yu] (ābì yù - Avīci hell), spreading throughout the hell like blooming lotuses, and successively passed through the other eighteen great hells. In each of these hells, their lifespan was exactly one great kalpa. Thus, they successively transmigrated for ninety-two kalpas, constantly dwelling in hell. Emerging from hell, they were hungry ghosts for five hundred lives. Emerging from the hungry ghost realm, they were always monkeys with golden bodies for a thousand lives. Great King, you should know that the eighty-four thousand precept-breaking 比丘尼 [bi qiu ni] (bǐqiūnī - bhikṣunis) who cursed the 羅漢 [luo han] (Luóhàn - Arhat) at that time are these eighty-four thousand golden monkeys in this assembly. The ones who made offerings to those evil 比丘尼 [bi qiu ni] (bǐqiūnī - bhikṣunis) at that time are you, Great King, now. These monkeys, due to past habits, offer flowers and incense to you, Great King. Those who corrupted the precepts of those 比丘尼 [bi qiu ni] (bǐqiūnī - bhikṣunis) at that time are now 瞿迦梨 [qu jia li] (Qújiālì - Kokālika) and the King's five hundred eunuchs." The Buddha told the Great King: "One must not be careless with actions of body, speech, and mind." At that time, the 世尊 [shi zun] (Shìzūn - World-Honored One) spoke a verse:
"Precepts are the elixir of immortality,
Those who partake will not grow old or die.
The virtue of precepts can be relied upon,
Good fortune always follows.
Upholding precepts brings peace and safety,
No suffering in places of rebirth.
One will also see the Buddhas,
Receive the Dharma and attain liberation.
Breaking precepts leads to hell,
Just like these monkeys.
Rebirth is always lowly and humble,
The suffering of hell deeply afflicts.
Great King, listen carefully!
Cease evil and cultivate all good."

[0445c25] At that time, King 頻婆娑羅 [pin po suo luo] (Pínpósuōluó - Bimbisara), hearing this verse, confessed before the Buddha, feeling shame and blaming himself. His mind suddenly opened, and he attained 阿那含 [a na han] (ānáhán - Anāgāminship). Eight thousand people from the King's retinue requested to renounce their homes, and the King granted their permission. The Buddha said: "Come, 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikshu)!" Their hair and beards fell off by themselves, and monastic robes appeared on their bodies, instantly making them 沙門 [sha men] (shāmén - renunciants). They bowed to the Buddha's feet, and before they lifted their heads, they attained 阿羅漢 [a luo han] (āluóhàn - Arhatship), with the 三明 [san ming] (sānmíng - three insights), 六通 [liu tong] (liùtōng - six psychic powers), and 八解脫 [ba jie tuo] (bājiětuō - eight liberations). The remaining sixteen thousand people from the King's retinue all aroused the 阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti xin] (ānoùduōluósānmiǎosānpútí xīn - aspiration for Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi). Eighty thousand 諸天 [zhu tian] (zhū tiān - devas) also simultaneously aroused this aspiration. The eighty-four thousand golden monkeys, hearing their past causes and conditions, felt shame and blamed themselves. They circumambulated the Buddha a thousand times, repented to the Buddha, and each also aroused the 無上菩提心 [wu shang pu ti xin] (wúshàng pútí xīn - unsurpassed Bodhi-mind). According to their respective lifespans, they all passed away. After their passing, they will be reborn in 兜率天 [dou lu tian] (Dōusuài Tiān - Tusita Heaven) and meet 彌勒 [mi lei] (Mílè - Maitreya), further progressing to attain non-retrogression.

[0446a06] At that time, the 尊者摩訶迦葉 [zun zhe mo he jia ye] (Zūnzhě Móhējiāyè - Venerable Mahakashyapa), having witnessed this, told the great assembly: "The practice of a 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattva) is so pure that it can cause animals to arouse the 道心 [dao xin] (dàoxīn - aspiration for the Way). If 婆須蜜多 [po xu mi duo] (Póxūmìduō - Vasumitra) can accomplish such great Buddha-deeds, how much more immeasurable is the majestic virtue of other 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattvas)!"

They rejoiced in their hearts and said to the Buddha: "How long will it be until these 諸獼猴 [zhu mi hou] (zhū míhóu - monkeys) attain Buddhahood?"

Excellent, 世尊 [shi zun] (Shìzūn - World-Honored One)! If monkeys can attain Buddhahood upon hearing the Dharma, how much more can we do so in future lives!"
