At one time, the Buddha was in the country of 毘羅勒 [pi luo lei] (Píluólè - Vilalakkha), with twelve hundred and fifty 比丘 [bi qiu] (bǐqiū - bhikṣus), and countless 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattvas), 國王 [guo wang] (guówáng - kings), 大臣 [da chen] (dàchén - ministers), 長者 [zhang zhe] (zhǎngzhě - elders), 居士 [ju shi] (jūshì - lay practitioners), 清信 [qing xin] (qīngxìn - pure lay devotees), and 士女 [shi nu] (shìnǚ - male and female devotees), all assembled at that time.

[0442a07] The Buddha told the 諸比丘 [zhu bi qiu] (zhū bǐqiū - bhikṣus): "All of you, listen attentively and with focused minds! I recall that in a previous life, when I first attained the 菩薩道 [pu sa dao] (púsà dào - Bodhisattva Path), my precepts were universally complete, my diligence was single-minded, and I cultivated wisdom and skillful means. The accumulation of merits was immeasurable. No 諸天龍 [zhu tian long] (zhū tiānlóng - devas and nāgas), 鬼神 [gui shen] (guǐshén - ghosts and spirits), 帝王 [di wang] (dìwáng - emperors), or 人民 [ren min] (rénmín - common people) could accomplish what I did."

[0442a11] 阿難 [a nan] (Ānán - Ananda) heard the Buddha's words, adjusted his robes, knelt with folded hands, and said to the Buddha: "I wish to hear what you have to say."

[0442a12] The Buddha told 阿難 [a nan] (Ānán - Ananda): "Innumerable ages ago, there was a 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattva) named 一切妙行 [yi qie miao xing] (Yīqiè Miàoxíng - All Wonderful Deeds). He was benevolent and charitable, saving all sentient beings, constantly practicing the 四等心 [si deng xin] (sìděng xīn - Four Immeasurable Minds), delivering the world from dangers and calamities, and nurturing the suffering. He resided in 兜率天上 [dou lu tian shang] (Dōusuài Tiānshàng - Tusita Heaven) and taught the heavenly beings, constantly meditating and focusing on the 三昧 [san mei] (sānmèi - samadhi) three times a day and three times at night, observing the good and evil paths of the people in the 十方天下 [shi fang tian xia] (shífāng tiānxià - ten directions of the world). He knew those who were filial to their parents, served the 三尊 [san zun] (sānzūn - Three Jewels), were respectful to their teachers and elders, and cultivated various merits, always observing the 五道 [wu dao] (wǔdào - five paths of existence) with his 天眼 [tian yan] (tiānyǎn - divine eye).

[0442a19] "At that time, in the country of 迦夷 [jia yi] (Jiāyī), there was a 長者 [zhang zhe] (zhǎngzhě - elder) who was solitary and had no son. Both husband and wife were blind. They wished to enter the mountains to seek the 無上道決 [wu shang dao jue] (wúshàng dàojuē - unsurpassed resolution of the Way) and cultivate a pure resolve, delighting in solitude and leisure. The 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattva) thought: 'This person's aspiration is to learn the profound 道 [dao] (dào - Way), but both their eyes are blind and cannot see. If they enter the mountains, they might fall into ditches or pits, or encounter poisonous insects and be harmed. If my life ends, I shall be born as their son, support my parents, and serve them until the end of their lives.' Thereupon, when the 菩薩 [pu sa] (púsà - bodhisattva)'s life ended, he was immediately reborn in the home of the blind parents, becoming their son. The parents rejoiced and loved him dearly. They had originally expressed the intention to enter the mountains to cultivate the 道 [dao] (dào - Way), but because their son was born, they found joy in the world.

[0442a27] "When the son was ten years old, he was named 睒子 [shan zi] (Shǎnzi). He was extremely filial and benevolent, practicing the 十善 [shi shan] (shí shàn - Ten Virtuous Deeds): not killing, not stealing, not committing adultery, not deceiving, not drinking alcohol, not speaking falsely, not engaging in frivolous talk, not being jealous, having unwavering faith in the 道 [dao] (dào - Way), and diligently cultivating day and night. He served his parents as people serve heaven, always speaking with a smile, never hurting others' feelings, and always acting in accordance with the Dharma, never deviating. Thereupon, his parents were greatly pleased and were no longer worried.

[0442a27] 「子年十歲號曰睒子,至孝仁慈,奉行十善:不殺、不盜、不婬、不欺、不飲酒、不妄言、不綺語、不嫉妬、信道不疑、晝夜精進,奉事父母如人事天,言常含笑不傷人意,行則應法不望傾斜,於是父母即大喜悅,無復憂愁。

[0442b03] "When he was over ten years old, 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) knelt and said to his parents: 'You originally made a great vow to enter the deep mountains to seek the empty, tranquil, and unsurpassed 道 [dao] (dào - Way). How can you abandon your original vow because of your son? People in the world are impermanent and constantly changing; life is not like gold or stone, and its end is uncertain. I wish to fulfill your original intention and your former resolve. I will accompany my parents into the mountains, and I will serve and care for you without missing any time.' His parents replied to 睒 [shan] (Shǎn): 'Heaven itself knows your filial piety. We will not go against our original vow, and we will immediately enter the mountains.' 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) then generously distributed all his family's possessions to the poor people in the country and went into the mountains with his parents.

[0442b11] "睒子 [shan zi] (Shǎnzi) arrived in the mountains and built a hut with cattail grass for his parents, placing beds and mats that were neither too cold nor too hot, always suitable. After only one year in the mountains, fruits were abundant and beautiful, and tasted fragrant and sweet. Spring water gushed forth, clear and cool. Lotuses in the pond were vibrantly colored, sandalwood and various fragrant trees flourished, and their fragrance was more intense than usual. The wind and rain came in due season, neither cold nor hot. The leaves of the trees interlocked, blocking rain and dew, and shading the sunlight, keeping the ground constantly cool. Flying birds flew and gathered, all making musical sounds to entertain the blind parents. Lions, bears, tigers, wolves, and poisonous insects all turned to each other with compassionate hearts, without the intention to harm. They all drank water and ate fruits without fear. Deer and various birds all came near 睒 [shan] (Shǎn), harmonizing their sounds with his, to entertain the blind parents. 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) was supremely filial and benevolent; he had no faults. He always feared harming the earth as he walked. 天神 [tian shen] (tiānshén - heavenly gods) and 山神 [shan shen] (shānshén - mountain gods) all appeared in human form, comforting the three 道人 [dao ren] (dàorén - practitioners) day and night, who were focused and calm, free from worries.

[0442b11] 「睒子至山中,以蒲草為父母作屋,施置床褥,不寒不熱恒得其宜。適入山一年眾果豐美,食之香甘,泉水涌出清而且涼;池中蓮華五色精明,栴檀雜香,樹木豐茂,香倍於常。風雨以時,不寒不熱,樹葉相接,以障雨露,蔭覆日光,其下常涼。飛鳥翔集,皆作妓樂之音,以娛樂盲父母;師子、熊羆、虎狼、毒蟲,皆自慈心相向,無驚害之心,皆飲水、噉果無復驚怖之心,麞鹿、眾鳥皆來附近,與睒音聲相和,以娛樂盲父母。睒至孝仁慈無有過,蹈地常恐地痛,天神、山神皆作人形,晝夜慰勞三道人,一心定意無復憂愁。

[0442b23] "睒 [shan] (Shǎn) always gathered a hundred kinds of fruits for his parents to eat. When his parents were thirsty and wanted to drink, 睒 [shan] (Shǎn), wearing deerskin clothes, took a bottle and went to fetch water. Elk and flying birds also went to drink water, not fearing each other. At that time, the King of 迦夷國 [jia yi guo] (Jiāyī Guó - Jiayi Kingdom) entered the mountains to hunt. The King saw elk and flying birds by the water, drew his bow, and shot. The arrow mistakenly struck 睒 [shan] (Shǎn). 睒 [shan] (Shǎn), hit by the poisoned arrow, felt great pain and cried out loudly: 'Who shot and killed three 道人 [dao ren] (dàorén - practitioners) with a poisoned arrow?' The King heard a human voice, dismounted, and went to 睒 [shan] (Shǎn)'s side. 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) said to the King: 'Elephants die because of their tusks, rhinoceroses because of their horns, kingfishers because of their feathers, and elk because of their skin. I am dying now without tusks, horns, feathers, or edible skin and flesh. What sin have I committed to be unjustly shot and killed?' The King said: 'Who are you? Dressed in deerskin, you are no different from an animal.' 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) said: 'I am a person from your kingdom. I came into the mountains with my blind parents to learn the 道 [dao] (dào - Way). For over twenty years, I have never been harmed by tigers, wolves, or poisonous insects, but now I have been shot and killed by the King's arrow.'

[0442b23] 「睒常與父母取百種果蓏以食父母。父母時渴欲飲,睒著鹿皮衣提瓶行取水,麋鹿、飛鳥亦復往飲,不相畏難。時,迦夷國王入山射獵,王見水邊有麋鹿、飛鳥,引弓射之,箭誤中睒。睒被毒箭甚痛,便大呼言:『誰持一毒箭,射殺三道人?』王聞人聲,下馬往到睒前,睒謂王言:『象坐牙死,犀坐角死,翠坐毛死,麋鹿坐皮死,今我死無牙、無角、無毛、無皮肉、不可噉,今有何罪橫見射殺?』王言:『卿是何人?被鹿皮之衣與禽獸無異。』睒言:『我是王國中人,與盲父母俱來學道,二十餘年未曾為虎狼毒蟲所害,今便為王箭所射殺之。』

Each touched 睒 [shan] (Shǎn)'s arrow with both hands, crying out to heaven: 'All 諸天龍神 [zhu tian long shen] (zhū tiānlóngshén - devas, nāgas, and spirits), 山神 [shan shen] (shānshén - mountain gods), 樹神 [shu shen] (shùshén - tree gods), my son 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) is the most filial in the world; this is known to all 諸天龍神 [zhu tian long shen] (zhū tiānlóngshén - devas, nāgas, and spirits). I am old and cannot see. I will die in place of my son; if 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) lives, I will have no regrets.' Thereupon, the parents both vowed: 'If 睒 [shan] (Shǎn)'s utmost filial piety is known to heaven and earth, the arrow shall be pulled out, the poisonous pain shall be removed, and 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) shall be reborn.'

[0443b19] "Thereupon, the throne of the 第二忉利天帝 [di er dao li tian di] (Dì'èr Dāolì Tiāndì - Sakra, Lord of the Second Trayastrimsa Heaven) was moved. With his eye, he saw these two blind 道人 [dao ren] (dàorén - practitioners) embracing their son and crying. The sound reached the 第四兜率天上 [di si dou lu tian shang] (Dìsì Dōusuài Tiānshàng - Fourth Tusita Heaven). 釋梵四王 [shi fan si wang] (Shì Fàn Sì Wáng - Sakra, Brahma, and the Four Heavenly Kings) came down from heaven. In an instant, they arrived and stood before 睒 [shan] (Shǎn), pouring divine and wondrous medicine into 睒 [shan] (Shǎn)'s mouth. As the medicine entered 睒 [shan] (Shǎn)'s mouth, the arrow was pulled out, the poison was removed, and he came back to life as before. The parents heard that 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) had died and then revived, and both their eyes opened. Flying birds and running beasts all made sounds of great joy, the wind ceased, the clouds dispersed, the sun shone brightly again, spring water gushed forth, clear and cool, lotuses in the pond were vibrantly colored, sandalwood and various fragrant trees were glorious, and their fragrance was more intense than usual. At that time, the King was overjoyed and could not contain himself. He bowed to 天帝釋 [tian di shi] (Tiāndì Shì - Sakra, Lord of Heaven), then bowed to the parents and their son 睒 [shan] (Shǎn): 'I wish to offer all the wealth and treasures of my country to the 道人 [dao ren] (dàorén - practitioners) for their self-support, so that my sins may be extinguished forever without remainder.' 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) said to the King: 'If you wish to foster blessings, King, just return to your country and comfort your people, instructing them to observe the precepts. King, do not hunt or unjustly kill the innocent. If you do, your body will not be at peace in this life, and at the end of your life, you will enter 泥犁 [ni li] (nílí - hell). People in the world experience love and attachment temporarily, but separation is long-lasting; one cannot always remain. King, you have accumulated blessings in past lives and now you are a king. Do not be arrogant and self-indulgent. By being self-indulgent, you create immeasurable evil, and later enter evil paths; what good would repentance do then?' The King replied: 'As you instruct.' The hundreds of people who followed the King in hunting, seeing 睒 [shan] (Shǎn) die and then revive with the divine medicine from the 天神 [tian shen] (tiānshén - heavenly spirit), and his parents' eyes open—such a divine transformation—all joyfully resolved to observe the 五戒 [wu jie] (wǔjiè - Five Precepts) and practice the 十善 [shi shan] (shí shàn - Ten Virtuous Deeds). They ascended to heaven after death and none entered the 惡道 [e dao] (èdào - evil paths of existence)."
