[0430b06] "Furthermore, later on, Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]) went out to the park with his four elder brothers. Along the way, there were countless thousands of needle-mouthed hungry ghosts (针口饿鬼 [zhen kou e gui]) dwelling halfway up a mountain. They were emaciated, resembling piles of bones, and their bodies were ablaze. They were surrounded by other ghosts (鬼众 [gui zhong]) and were invisible to humans. Only Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]) saw them first. The hungry ghosts (饿鬼 [e gui]) clasped their palms together before him and said, 'You, with great blessing power (福德 [fu de]) and a great name (名称 [ming cheng]), are a compassionate one. We are afflicted by the suffering of hunger and thirst. We wish that you would give us a small portion of food and drink. In our previous lives, we committed the cause of stinginess (悭悋因 [qian lin yin]), and so in this life, we have fallen into the realm of hungry ghosts (饿鬼界 [e gui jie]). For countless thousands of years, we have not had water to drink, let alone food to eat, which is impossible to see.' At that moment, Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]) looked up at the sky and felt compassion. He thought, 'How wonderful! If I could now obtain a small portion of food and drink from heaven, I would use it to feed these hungry ghosts (饿鬼众 [e gui zhong]).' At that moment, suddenly, much food and drink descended from the sky. Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]) immediately offered this food to the hungry ghosts (饿鬼 [e gui]). Due to the power of their past karma (宿业力 [su ye li]), the hungry ghosts (饿鬼众 [e gui zhong]) could not see it. They all said, 'Prince! We heard in the past that you are a compassionate one. Why do you not now offer us food and drink?' The Prince (太子 [tai zi]) said, 'I offered you food and drink that descended from heaven just now. Why do you not take and eat it?' The hungry ghosts (饿鬼 [e gui]) replied, 'Prince! Due to the power of our past karma (宿业力 [su ye li]), we cannot see it.' At that moment, Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]) again had this thought: 'Alas! Stinginess (悭悋 [qian lin]) is unlovely.' He then said, 'If all blessing rewards (福报 [fu bao]) have great power, by my truthful words, may these hungry ghosts (饿鬼 [e gui]) be able to see the food and drink, and may they all be able to take and eat it as appropriate.' After he uttered these words, the hungry ghosts (饿鬼 [e gui]) were all able to see the food. Immediately, their faces transformed to resemble those of humans. Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]) felt joy in his heart, and he allowed them to take as much food and drink as they desired. After the hungry ghosts (饿鬼众 [e gui zhong]) had eaten, their hunger and thirst immediately ceased, their bodies became complete and robust, filled with vigor, and they were no longer ugly. They all felt pure joy towards Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]). Immediately, they died and were all reborn in the Tushita Heaven (兜率天上 [dou lu tian shang]). They circled in the air and said to the Prince (太子 [tai zi]), 'Prince! Our rebirth in Tushita Heaven (兜率天上 [dou lu tian shang]) is all due to your majestic power and establishment.'

[0430c03] "When Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]) heard these wonderful and good words, he rejoiced greatly. He then proceeded to the garden and discussed with his brothers, saying, 'What do people in the world do to gain much benefit (义利 [yi li])?' The one who was complete in physical characteristics (色相具足者 [se xiang ju zu zhe]) said, 'In this world, if one cultivates the karma (行业 [xing ye]) of physical characteristics (色相 [se xiang]), one gains much benefit (义利 [yi li]). How do I know this? It means that if someone has never been seen by others before, upon seeing them, people are pleased; if they have not been respected before, upon seeing them, they become respected. Just as my former master (师尊 [shi zun]) and immortal (仙人 [xian ren]) also said, if one possesses excellent physical characteristics (妙色相者 [miao se xiang zhe]), one is liked by people, and their beautiful appearance is pleasant to behold, inspiring reverence and love; just as a wise person enjoys the supreme dharma (最上法 [zui shang fa]) and offers various offerings.'

[0430c12] "Furthermore, the one who was complete in diligence (精进具足者 [jing jin ju zu zhe]) said, 'It is not by cultivating physical characteristics (色相 [se xiang]) that one gains much benefit (义利 [yi li])! One should know that the karma (行业 [xing ye]) of diligence (精进 [jing jin]) is what gains much benefit (义利 [yi li]) if a person cultivates it. Why? Even if one cultivates physical characteristics (色相 [se xiang]) but lacks diligence (精进 [jing jin]), how can one obtain desirable results in this life and the next? Or if one says that physical characteristics (色相 [se xiang]) gain much benefit (义利 [yi li]), that person is a fool (愚人 [yu ren]), covered by ignorant views (癡见 [chi jian]). As I have said, the karma (行业 [xing ye]) of diligence (精进 [jing jin]) can achieve desirable results in this life. For example, farmers plant crops, merchants gain profit, officials receive salaries, scholars master teachings, and those who cultivate meditation (禅定 [chan ding]) attain the fruit of tranquility (轻安果 [qing an guo])—all these desirable results in this life are achieved through diligence (精进 [jing jin]). Moreover, this diligence (精进 [jing jin]) can achieve desirable results in future lives, such as being reborn in good destinies and heavenly realms, becoming greatly wealthy and powerful, and attaining liberation in this very life—all these desirable results in future lives are achieved through diligence (精进 [jing jin]). Therefore, all virtues (功德 [gong de]) are based on diligence (精进 [jing jin]). Furthermore, this diligence (精进 [jing jin]) can cure cowardice (怯弱 [qie ruo]). If diligence (精进 [jing jin]) is applied, there is no small dharma (法 [fa]) that is difficult to achieve.'

Blessings (福 [fu]) are a pure result, blessings (福 [fu]) are a lustrous result, blessings (福 [fu]) are a desirable result, blessings (福 [fu]) are a pleasing result. Such blessing results (福果 [fu guo]), I cannot fully describe their merits (功德 [gong de]). Now, for your enlightenment, I will speak a small portion of the door of blessings (福门 [fu men]). Listen carefully. Because of blessings (福 [fu]), one can obtain physical characteristics (色相 [se xiang]). Blessings (福 [fu]) complete diligence (精进 [jing jin]). Blessings (福 [fu]) bring good fortune and great wealth. Blessings (福 [fu]) complete wisdom (智慧 [zhi hui]). Blessings (福 [fu]) can sing the merits (功德 [gong de]) of the true dharma (正法 [zheng fa]). Blessings (福 [fu]) bring intelligence. Blessings (福 [fu]) lead to the right path (正道 [zheng dao]). Blessings (福 [fu]) bring noble birth. Blessings (福 [fu]) bring past memories. Blessings (福 [fu]) bring renown. Blessings (福 [fu]) perfect precepts (戒行 [jie xing]). Blessings (福 [fu]) enable generosity (布施 [bu shi]). The power of blessings (福力 [fu li]) always keeps the faculties (诸根 [zhu gen]) intact. Blessings (福 [fu]) bring constant joy. One with blessings (有福 [you fu]) is always honored by the wise. Blessings (福 [fu]) complete all powers (诸力 [zhu li]). Blessings (福 [fu]) always lead to meeting good friends and knowledge. The power of blessings (福力 [fu li]) can accomplish all undertakings—whether farming the fields, or merchants seeking profit, a small effort yields great accumulation, leading to wealth and freedom. One with blessings (有福 [you fu]) can, in a moment of thought, cause the sky to naturally rain down clothes, food, jewels, and all necessities, enjoying happiness as desired. Blessings (福 [fu]) bring desirable and wonderful residences. Blessings (福 [fu]) in this life and future lives always bring beautiful wives, daughters, dependents, and wealth and grain. Where one with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) walks, there are naturally no thorns or sand and gravel, and the ground is stable. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) also obtains a vast physical form. If there is a sick person, when touched by the hand of one with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]), the illness lessens. Furthermore, when one with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) touches people, they can immediately produce food, clothing, jewels, wealth, and grain for endless use. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) is always protected by devas (天龙 [tian long]), yakshas (夜叉 [ye cha]), rakshasas (罗刹 [luo sha]), ghosts (鬼 [gui]), and others wherever they go, just as the crop-protecting deities (护苗稼神 [hu miao jia shen]) guard during the rainy season. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) is always respected and loved by many people. Blessings (福 [fu]) bring good reputation. Blessings (福 [fu]) are praised by others. Blessings (福 [fu]) can always complete all good dharmas (善法分 [shan fa fen]). The words of one with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) are trusted and obeyed by others. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) is always lustrous and lovely. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) always emits a subtle and wonderful Brahma voice (梵音 [fan yin]). The limbs of one with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) are naturally soft. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) always speaks wonderful and good words. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) always encounters good friends and wise people and does not have corrupted dependents. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) is free from illness. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) is loved by others. Blessings (福 [fu]) bring wealth. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) is courageous. Moreover, one with great blessings (大福者 [da fu zhe]) can become a human king (人王 [ren wang]), lacking nothing, free from all diseases. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) always enjoys unbroken prosperity. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) obtains the wheel-turning hidden treasure (转轮伏藏 [zhuan lun fu cang]), complete with seven treasures (七宝 [qi bao]). One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) can walk in the air. The majestic light of one with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) is equal to that of the sun and moon. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) can become a moon god (月天 [yue tian]). One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) can become a sun god (日天 [ri tian]). One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) can become a Brahma king (梵王 [fan wang]). One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) can become Indra (帝释 [di shi]). One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) can walk in the heavenly palaces and pavilions, like a son of heaven (天子 [tian zi]). One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) has great power, like an asura king (阿修罗王 [a xiu luo wang]). One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) is always reborn in good destinies. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) abandons evil destinies. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) always obtains the most excellent and rare delightful flowers. What one with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) does is accomplished. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) can illuminate the world. One with blessings (福者 [fu zhe]) always receives sincere offerings from devas (天 [tian]), humans (人 [ren]), asuras (阿修罗 [a xiu luo]), and others.'

Thereupon, the Prince (太子 [tai zi]) further said, 'I now wish to secretly go to another country with my brothers, and wherever we stay, we shall verify these matters. Will it be physical characteristics (色相 [se xiang]) that people cultivate more? Or will it be diligence (精进 [jing jin]), craftsmanship (工巧 [gong qiao]), or wisdom (智慧 [zhi hui]) and blessing power (福力 [fu li]) that people cultivate more?' The one who was complete in physical characteristics (色相具足者 [se xiang ju zu zhe]), due to his excellent physical characteristics (妙色 [miao se]), was pleasing to all who beheld him. He immediately gained wealth and enjoyed sustenance. The one who was complete in diligence (精进具足者 [jing jin ju zu zhe]), due to his courage and strength, was able to acquire things. He suddenly saw a swiftly flowing great river, deep and terrifying, within which was an extremely large sandalwood tree (旃檀香树 [zhan tan xiang shu]). The diligent one (精进者 [jing jin zhe]) obtained the tree, traded it for profit, became wealthy, and enjoyed sustenance. The one who was complete in craftsmanship (工巧具足者 [gong qiao ju zu zhe]), by the power of his craftsmanship (工巧力 [gong qiao li]), performed various tasks and thus gained wealth and enjoyed sustenance. The one who was complete in wisdom (智慧具足者 [zhi hui ju zu zhe]), by his skillful wisdom (巧智 [qiao zhi]), was able to resolve great enmities and also to befriend those with wealth and power, pleasing them and causing them to rejoice, thus obtaining clothing, ornaments, jewels, and other things as desired, enjoying sustenance.

[0431c09] "At that time, Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]), relying on his own supreme blessings (胜福 [sheng fu]) and great majestic power, traveled around performing beneficial blessing deeds (利益福事 [li yi fu shi]). One day, he suddenly passed by a poor person's house and entered it. Due to the majestic power of the Prince's blessings (太子福威力 [tai zi fu wei li]), the house suddenly manifested vast auspicious and superior signs. Gold, treasures, and grain filled it abundantly. When the poor person saw this, he was astonished and rejoiced, thinking, 'Such a thing as this has never happened before. How did it arise? From where did it come? Could it be that this person who entered my house is the cause of its power?' He further thought, 'I was once extremely poor, but now I have gained victory and everything is abundant. It must be due to this person coming here, which caused the manifestation of auspicious signs in my house. This person has great blessings (大福 [da fu]) and a great name (名称 [ming cheng]). I should show him respect and offer him offerings.' Because of this, he respected and served him continuously. The Prince (太子 [tai zi]) brought great wealth to the poor person's house, making him happy. Later, his reputation spread everywhere: 'In so-and-so's house, which was once extremely poor, a remarkable person entered, and due to his majestic power, the house suddenly manifested auspicious signs.' When people heard this, they all developed faith and respect for Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]), praising him together, saying, 'Wonderful! Superior blessings (胜福 [sheng fu]) have great power.' Furthermore, due to the majestic power of the Prince's blessings (太子福威力 [tai zi fu wei li]), in that region, flower trees and fruit trees blossomed and bore fruit at the right time without delay. Sweet rain fell everywhere, and seeds grew and flourished. At that time, all the people were deeply fond of Prince Fuli (福力太子 [fu li tai zi]) and came to look upon him.

Now, in my house, I can obtain all kinds of treasures, various enjoyable items, and all wonderful and pleasing things, to provide for those who come and make them complete.' When he had this thought, all kinds of treasures immediately appeared as he wished, all in abundance. At that time, the people were astonished and exclaimed, 'Wonderful! Great blessings (大福 [da fu]) are a sweet fruit.' They all developed respect for the Prince (太子 [tai zi]). At that time, the Prince (太子 [tai zi]) then, as appropriate, equally encompassed all people with the four ways of encompassing (四摄法 [si she fa]), making them all harmonious, namely, giving (布施 [bu shi]), kind words (爱语 [ai yu]), beneficial actions (利行 [li xing]), and working together (同事 [tong shi]). [0432a06] "Later on, the Prince (太子 [tai zi]) gradually arrived in a country and saw its king (国王 [guo wang]) punishing a skilled doctor (善医業者 [shan yi ye zhe]), ordering his prison officials (狱官 [yu guan]) to break his limbs and sever his hands and feet. Much blood flowed, and he suffered greatly from the pain. At that time, the person being punished saw the Prince (太子 [tai zi]) and cried out loudly in pain, weeping and saying, 'Benevolent one! Save me. Benevolent one! Save me.' The Prince (太子 [tai zi]) immediately felt compassion for this matter and thought to himself, 'What means can I use now to save this person from suffering?' In that moment of thought, he suddenly gained wisdom and understanding (智解 [zhi jie]). Just as my own actions of blessing power (福力 [fu li]) are evident in the world. Having this thought, compassion surged within him. He then broke his own body and released much blood, giving it to the person to drink, and his suffering was removed. The Prince (太子 [tai zi]) also saw that his hands and feet were severed, causing great suffering. He immediately took a sharp knife and cut off his own hands and feet, placing them where the other person's hands and feet had been severed. At that time, the Prince (太子 [tai zi]) looked up at the sky, feeling compassion (慈心 [ci xin]) for all sentient beings, and then made a vast and truthful vow, saying, 'In this life, I have never committed even a small amount of unwholesome karma (不善之业 [bu shan zhi ye]). If what I say is true, may this person's severed hands and feet immediately join together and be restored to their original state.' After he uttered these words, the person's limbs immediately joined together, his body became whole, and he was restored to his original state. When the Prince (太子 [tai zi]) saw this, his wish was fulfilled. He immediately thought, 'I have accomplished what I set out to do with diligence and courage. I have given my own blood to save this person from suffering. I have cut off my own hands and feet to reattach his limbs. And by the power of my truthful and great vow, his body and life have been fully restored. May I, with these supreme good roots, attain the fruit of Anuttara Samyak Sambodhi (阿耨多罗三藐三菩提果 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti guo]), and may I then give the taste of dharma (法味 [fa wei]) to that person, ultimately leading him to dwell in the happiness of Nirvana (安乐涅槃 [an le nie pan]).' When he made this vow, the entire great earth quaked in six ways, and the palace of Indra (帝释天宫 [di shi tian gong]) also trembled.
