[0424b08] Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha 佛 [fu] was traveling in the country of Gandhāra 乾陀越國 [gan tuo yue guo], in the great city of Vaiśravaṇa 毘沙門波羅大城 [pi sha men bo luo da cheng]. Under a mountain cliff on the north side of the city, he taught and transformed countless people, including the king 國王 [guo wang], ministers 臣民 [chen min], devas 天 [tian], nāgas 龍 [long], the eight classes of beings 八部 [ba bu], humans, and non-humans. When the teaching and transformation were nearing completion, the Buddha 佛 [fu] smiled, and from his mouth came forth a fragrant light, of nine colors, illuminating all countries 諸國 [zhu guo]; the fragrance also pervaded everywhere. At that time, all the great assembly, seeing the light and smelling the fragrance, were greatly rejoiced. Then, the light returned, circled the Buddha 佛 [fu] seven times, and re-entered his mouth.

[0424b14] At that time, Ānanda 阿難 [a nan] straightened his clothes, knelt down, clasped his hands, and said to the Buddha 佛 [fu]: "The World-Honored One 世尊 [shi zun] has now manifested a wondrous auspicious sign, there must be a cause and condition, greatly beneficial, and living beings will receive blessings. May the Heavenly Honored One 天尊 [tian zun] explain its cause and condition."

[0424b19] The Buddha 佛 [fu] told Ānanda 阿難 [a nan]: "Nine kalpas 劫 [jie] ago, there were no Buddhas 佛 [fu] in the world. There was a great country 大國 [da guo] named Gandhamādana 乾陀摩提 [gan tuo mo ti], whose king 王 [wang] was named Gandhaśrī 乾陀尸利 [gan tuo shi li]. His consort 夫人 [fu ren] was named Kṣemamukhā 差摩目佉 [cha mo mu qu], and the prince 太子 [tai zi] was named Candana-matī 栴檀摩提 [zhan tan mo ti]. His country 國 [guo] was vast and prosperous, with abundant people, and people lived for one thousand five hundred years. Because of the prince's 太子 [tai zi] blessings and virtues, the realm 天下 [tian xia] was peaceful, without thieves or robbers, and the people were harmonious and did not attack each other. The prince 太子 [tai zi] was compassionate, intelligent, and wise, proficient in all scriptures and the ninety-six kinds of Daoist arts 道術 [dao shu], and all their comportments were thoroughly understood; from a young age, he was always fond of giving alms 布施 [bu shi], not sparing his body, life, or wealth; he nurtured living beings with greater compassion than for his own newborn, his great compassion covered all equally without discrimination, and he fulfilled filial piety and all proper rites towards his parents.

The park was eight yojanas 由旬 [you xun] in both length and breadth, with various flowers and fruits planted, and exotic birds, clean, solemn, and beautiful; everywhere there were flowing springs and bathing ponds, and in the ponds there were always utpala 優鉢羅華 [you bo luo hua] flowers, padma 鉢頭摩華 [bo tou mo hua] flowers, kumuda 拘物頭華 [ju wu tou hua] flowers, puṇḍarīka 分陀利華 [fen tuo li hua] flowers, and other various kinds of red and white lotus flowers 蓮華 [lian hua]; peacocks, swans, egrets, and mandarin ducks played among them, cool, fragrant, pure, and of supreme subtlety.

Hearing that the prince 太子 [tai zi] had returned, they all came and stood by the roadside, stretching out their hands towards the prince 太子 [tai zi]. When the prince 太子 [tai zi] saw them, he immediately gave away his body's ornaments, clothes, gold coins, silver coins, carriages, elephants, and horses, all as alms 布施 [bu shi]; by the time he reached the city gate, he had nothing left, yet there were still many poor people, and he regretted that it was not enough. The prince 太子 [tai zi] returned to the palace 宮 [gong], thinking of the poor people, and was so worried that he could not eat.

[0424c15] "Thus, the prince's 太子 [tai zi] wish was not fulfilled, and his sorrow doubled. A prince's 太子 [tai zi] attendant named Jaya 闍耶 [du ye], seeing the prince 太子 [tai zi] not eating, was saddened and distressed. He knelt down, clasped his hands, and said to the prince 太子 [tai zi]: 'Your minister 臣 [chen] has ten thousand gold coins, which I offer to the Great Deva 大天 [da tian], to be used as you wish. Please do not worry about poverty, and eat as before; if the money is not enough, your minister 臣 [chen] will sell himself to serve the Great Deva 大天 [da tian].' Thereupon, Jaya 闍耶 [du ye] immediately offered ten thousand gold coins to the prince 太子 [tai zi]. The prince 太子 [tai zi] had someone take the money out of the city to give alms 布施 [bu shi] to the poor people. Even after all ten thousand were given, it was still not enough. He returned and reported to the prince 太子 [tai zi]: 'The gold coins are exhausted, but there are still many poor people.' Thereupon, the prince 太子 [tai zi] immediately had his attendant check his private stores, and found another ten thousand gold coins, which he gave to the poor people, but it was still insufficient.

[0425a04] "At that time, the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] made his slave take a cart into the mountain to chop firewood and sell it in the market; after a long time, he again went to fetch firewood, and then found a piece of ox-head sandalwood 牛頭栴檀 [niu tou zhan tan] weighing one hundred jin 斤 [jin] in the mountain.

When they arrived at the usual stone chamber, they only saw the bedding, deerskin clothes, umbrella, begging bowl, tin staff, water bottle, and washing pot all in the chamber, but did not see the prince 太子 [tai zi]. They asked everyone around, but no one answered, they only saw the immortals 仙人 [xian ren] weeping in groups of ten or five. When they reached the Great Master's 大師 [da shi] place, they only saw the immortal master 仙師 [xian shi] sitting with his hand propped against his cheek, tears filling his eyes, groaning. They repeatedly questioned him, but he did not answer. The consort 夫人 [fu ren] said: 'Alas! My son is dead!' She beat her chest and cried out loudly, running to the king 王 [wang]. When the king 王 [wang] heard this, he fell from his bed, unconscious. All his ministers 群臣 [qun chen] and myriad people gathered by the king's 王 [wang] side, knocking their heads and advising: 'The prince 太子 [tai zi] is in the mountain, and it is uncertain whether this is true or false. Why are you so sorrowful? May the king 王 [wang] rest a little!'

They immediately collected the bones, brought them out of the mountain valley, and on a flat ground, piled up sandalwood 栴檀 [zhan tan] incense wood and various fragrant woods, various incenses, ghee oil, silk canopies, and banners to cremate the prince 太子 [tai zi]. They collected the śarīras 舍利 [she li] and placed them in a jeweled vessel. Immediately, they erected a seven-jeweled stūpa 七寶塔 [qi bao ta] there, adorned with various treasures. [0427c24] When the Buddha 佛 [fu] spoke this, eight thousand four hundred devas 天 [tian], nāgas 龍 [long], and humans all developed the supreme and equal Bodhicitta 平等道意 [ping deng dao yi]. Eight thousand bhikkhus 比丘 [bi qiu] exhausted their defilements and attachments, attaining the Arhat Path 應真道 [ying zhen dao]. The king 王 [wang] and his ministers 群臣 [qun chen], devas 天 [tian], nāgas 龍 [long], and ghosts and spirits 鬼神 [gui shen], hearing what the Buddha 佛 [fu] said, were all greatly rejoiced, paid homage to the Buddha 佛 [fu], and departed.

At that time, the king 國王 [guo wang], hearing what the Buddha 佛 [fu] said, immediately erected a great stūpa 大塔 [da ta] at that very spot, named "Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] Threw Himself to Feed a Hungry Tigress Stūpa 塔 [ta]", which exists to this day. At the foot of the mountain on the east side of the stūpa 塔 [ta], there are monastic cells 僧房 [seng fang], lecture halls 講堂 [jiang tang], and viharas 精舍 [jing she], where five thousand monks 眾僧 [zhong seng] always make the four offerings 四事供養 [si shi gong yang] to Fashèng 法盛 [fa sheng].

[0428a06] At that time, people in various countries 諸國 [zhu guo] who had leprosy, madness, deafness, blindness, crippled hands and feet, and various other diseases, all came to this stūpa 塔 [ta], burned incense, lit lamps, smeared the ground with fragrant mud, cleaned and swept, and prostrated themselves in repentance. All their diseases were cured. Those who were cured earlier left, and others came later. There were always over a hundred people, regardless of their status, and it never ceased.

The Sūtra on the Bodhisattva 菩薩 [pu sa] Throwing Himself to Feed a Hungry Tigress and the Erection of a Stūpa 塔 [ta]

[0428a06] 爾時,見諸國中有人癩病,及顛狂、聾盲、手脚躃跛,及種種疾病,悉來就此塔,燒香、然燈、香埿塗地、修治掃灑,并叩頭懺悔,百病皆愈。前來差者便去,後來輙爾;常有百餘人,不問貴賤皆爾,終無絕時。
