[0418c21] Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha 佛 [fu] was in Jetavana 祇洹 [qi huan] at Anāthapiṇḍika's Park 阿難邠坻阿藍 [a nan bin chi a lan] in the kingdom of Śrāvastī 舍衛國 [she wei guo]. He was seated in the center of the four assemblies of disciples, together with immeasurable bhikkhus 比丘 [bi qiu], bhikkhunīs 比丘尼 [bi qiu ni], upāsakas 優婆塞 [you po sai], and upāsikās 優婆夷 [you po yi]. At that time, the Buddha 佛 [fu] smiled, and five-colored light emanated from his mouth. Ānanda 阿難 [a nan] rose from his seat, straightened his clothes, clasped his hands, and knelt down, saying to the Buddha 佛 [fu]: "I have attended the Buddha 佛 [fu] for more than twenty years, and I have never seen the Buddha 佛 [fu] smile as he did today. Is the Buddha 佛 [fu] thinking of past, future, or present Buddhas 佛 [fu] today? Or does he have some special intention? I wish to hear about it."

[0419a01] The Buddha 佛 [fu] said: "In an immeasurable kalpa 劫 [jie] in the distant past, there was a great kingdom 國 [guo] named Yepa 葉波 [ye bo]. Its king 王 [wang] was named Śvetaparvata 濕波 [shi bo]. He governed the kingdom 國 [guo] with the Dharma 正法 [zheng fa], not oppressing the people. The king 王 [wang] had four thousand ministers 大臣 [da chen], presided over sixty small kingdoms 小國 [xiao guo], and eight hundred villages 聚落 [ju luo]. He had five hundred great white elephants. The king 王 [wang] had twenty thousand consorts 夫人 [fu ren], but no son. The king 王 [wang] prayed and offered sacrifices to various gods 諸神 [zhu shen] and mountains and rivers 山川 [shan chuan], and then a consort 夫人 [fu ren] conceived. The king 王 [wang] personally provided for the consort's 夫人 [fu ren] bed, dwelling, food, and drink, ensuring they were all fine and soft. After ten full months, a prince 太子 [tai zi] was born. The twenty thousand consorts 夫人 [fu ren] in the palace 宮中 [gong zhong] rejoiced and leaped with joy when they heard of the prince's 太子 [tai zi] birth, and their milk naturally flowed forth. Because of this, the prince 太子 [tai zi] was named Sudatta 須大拏 [xu da na]. There were four wet nurses to care for the prince 太子 [tai zi]: one nursed the prince 太子 [tai zi], one held the prince 太子 [tai zi], one bathed the prince 太子 [tai zi], and one took the prince 太子 [tai zi] out to play. When the prince 太子 [tai zi] reached the age of sixteen, he was proficient in writing, calculation, archery, charioteering, and all forms of ritual and music. The prince 太子 [tai zi] served his parents as he would a heavenly deity 天神 [tian shen]. The king 王 [wang] built a separate palace 宮室 [gong shi] for the prince 太子 [tai zi].

[0419a13] "From a young age, the prince 太子 [tai zi] was always fond of giving alms 布施 [bu shi], wishing all living beings, including people, flying birds, and walking beasts, to constantly receive its blessings. Foolish people are stingy and unwilling to give alms 布施 [bu shi], deceiving themselves without benefit. Wise people in the world know that giving alms 布施 [bu shi] is a virtue. Those who practice giving alms 布施 [bu shi] are praised by past, future, and present Buddhas 佛 [fu], Pratyekabuddhas 辟支佛 [pi zhi fu], and Arhats 阿羅漢 [a luo han].

[0419a18] "As the prince 太子 [tai zi] grew older, the great king 大王 [da wang] arranged a marriage for him. His consort 妃 [fei] was named Mandī 曼坻 [man chi], the daughter of a king 國王 [guo wang]. She was exquisitely beautiful, adorned with necklaces of marvelous lapis lazuli 琉璃 [liu li], gold, silver, and various other treasures. The prince 太子 [tai zi] had one son and one daughter. The prince 太子 [tai zi] reflected: 'I wish to perform the deeds of Dāna Pāramitā 檀波羅蜜 [tan bo luo mi].' The prince 太子 [tai zi] reported to the king 王 [wang]: 'I wish to go out and observe.' The king 王 [wang] immediately assented. The prince 太子 [tai zi] then left the city. Śakra, the King of Devas 天王釋 [tian wang shi], transformed into poor, deaf, blind, and mute people, all along the roadside. When the prince 太子 [tai zi] saw them, he immediately turned his carriage back to the palace 宮 [gong], feeling deeply grieved and unhappy. The king 王 [wang] asked the prince 太子 [tai zi]: 'You went out and returned, why are you unhappy?' The prince 太子 [tai zi] replied: 'I just went out and saw poor, deaf, blind, and mute people, which is why I am grieved. I wish to ask the king 王 [wang] for one wish, I wonder if the great king 大王 [da wang] will grant it?' The king 王 [wang] replied to the prince 太子 [tai zi]: 'Whatever you wish, ask for it. I will not go against your will.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'I wish to take all the treasures from the great king's 大王 [da wang] central treasury and place them outside the four city gates and in the market for giving alms 布施 [bu shi], granting whatever anyone asks for without going against their wishes.' The king 王 [wang] said to the prince 太子 [tai zi]: 'Do as you wish, I will not go against you.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] immediately ordered his attendants to transport the treasures and place them outside the four city gates and in the market for giving alms 布施 [bu shi], granting whatever anyone desired without going against their wishes. Everyone in the eight directions, high and low, heard of the prince's 太子 [tai zi] virtues. People from far and wide, some from a hundred li 里 [li], some from a thousand li 里 [li], and some from ten thousand li 里 [li] away, came. Those who wanted food were fed, those who wanted clothes were given them, and those who wanted gold, silver, and treasures were given them freely, whatever they wished for was granted without going against their wishes.

[0419b08] "At that time, there was an enemy kingdom 敵國怨家 [di guo yuan jia]. Hearing that the prince 太子 [tai zi] loved giving alms 布施 [bu shi] and granted whatever was asked for without going against wishes, they immediately gathered their ministers 諸臣 [zhu chen] and Daoist priests 眾道士 [zhong dao shi] to deliberate, saying: 'The king 王 [wang] of Yepa 葉波 [ye bo] has a white elephant that walks on lotuses, named Sudīrgha 須檀延 [xu tan yan], which is very strong and good at fighting. Whenever it fights with other kingdoms 諸國 [zhu guo], this elephant always wins. Who can go and beg for it?' The ministers 諸臣 [zhu chen] all said: 'No one can go and get it.' Among them, there were eight Daoist priests 道士 [dao shi] who reported to the king 王 [wang], saying: 'We can go and beg for it. Provide us with provisions.' The king 王 [wang] immediately gave them provisions. The king 王 [wang] then said to them: 'Whoever can get the elephant, I will reward you heavily.'

[0419b15] "The eight Daoist priests 道士 [dao shi] then set off with their staffs, traversing mountains and rivers to reach the kingdom of Yepa 葉波國 [ye bo guo]. When they arrived at the prince's 太子 [tai zi] palace 宮 [gong] gate, they all leaned on their staffs and stood on one leg facing the gate. The gatekeeper then entered and reported to the prince 太子 [tai zi]: 'There are Daoist priests 道士 [dao shi] outside, all leaning on their staffs and standing on one leg. They say they have come from afar and wish to ask for something.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] was greatly pleased when he heard this, and went out to meet them, bowing to them as a son would to his father. He then greeted them, saying: 'Where have you come from? Was your journey arduous? What do you seek, and why are you standing on one leg?' The eight Daoist priests 道士 [dao shi] said: 'We have heard that the prince 太子 [tai zi] loves giving alms 布施 [bu shi] and grants whatever is asked for without going against wishes. The prince's 太子 [tai zi] name has spread in all eight directions, reaching up to the azure heaven and down to the yellow springs. The virtue of giving alms 布施 [bu shi] is immeasurable, and everyone, near and far, sings its praises. People say that the prince 太子 [tai zi] is truly not deceptive. Now, as a son of gods and humans 天人之子 [tian ren zhi zi], what gods and humans 天人 [tian ren] say is never false. If the prince 太子 [tai zi] can truly give alms 布施 [bu shi] without going against wishes, we wish to beg for the white elephant that walks on lotuses.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] then led them to the elephant stable and told them to take an elephant. The eight Daoist priests 道士 [dao shi] said: 'We only want the white elephant that walks on lotuses, named Sudīrgha 須檀延 [xu tan yan].' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'This great white elephant is greatly cherished by my royal father 父王 [fu wang]. The king 王 [wang] regards this white elephant as he regards me, without difference. I cannot give it to you. If I give it to you, I will displease my royal father 父王 [fu wang], and I might even be exiled from the kingdom 國 [guo] because of this elephant.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] then reflected: 'I previously made a vow that I would give alms 布施 [bu shi] whatever was asked for without going against wishes. If I do not give it now, I will violate my original intention. If I do not give this elephant, how can I attain the supreme and equal degree of enlightenment? I will give it, to fulfill my supreme and equal degree of enlightenment.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'Yes! Excellent! I will give it to you.' He then ordered his attendants to quickly bring out the elephant, adorned with a golden saddle. The prince 太子 [tai zi] held water in his left hand to wash the Daoist priests' 道士 [dao shi] hands, and with his right hand, led the elephant and handed it over to them. The eight people, having received the elephant, invoked blessings upon the prince 太子 [tai zi]. After the blessings were finished, they rode the white elephant away with joy.

All the ministers 諸臣 [zhu chen] went to report to the king 王 [wang]: 'The prince 太子 [tai zi] has given the kingdom's 國中 [guo zhong] treasure, the elephant that repels enemies, to the enemy.' The king 王 [wang] was astonished when he heard this. The ministers 諸臣 [zhu chen] again reported to the king 王 [wang]: 'The reason the king 王 [wang] has gained the realm 天下 [tian xia] is because of this elephant. This elephant is stronger than sixty elephants, but the prince 太子 [tai zi] gave it to the enemy. We fear that the kingdom 國 [guo] will be lost. What should be done? The prince 太子 [tai zi] gives alms so freely that the central treasury is daily emptied. Your ministers 臣 [chen] fear that the entire kingdom 國 [guo] and his wife and children will all be given away.' In the palace 宮 [gong], your clothes are fine and soft, you sleep under curtains, and your food and drink are delicious, satisfying all your desires. Now, in the mountain, you will sleep on grass mats and eat fruits and berries. How can you enjoy this? The Daoist practitioner 道人 [dao ren] said: 'I truly do not know about this.'

His wife hated to see him and cursed him, wishing him dead. When his wife went to fetch water, she met some young men who mocked his appearance and teased her, asking: 'You are so beautiful, how can you be the wife of such a man?' The wife said to the young men: 'This old man's head is as white as frost on a tree, and I wish him dead morning and night; but what can I do since he won't die?' The wife then returned home with water, weeping, and said to her husband 婿 [xu]: 'I just went to fetch water, and the young men mocked my appearance. You must get me servants. If I have servants, I won't have to fetch water myself anymore, and people won't laugh at me anymore.' The husband 婿 [xu] said: 'I am extremely poor, where can I get servants?' The wife said: 'If you don't get me servants, I will leave and no longer live with you.' The wife said: 'If you don't get me servants, I will kill myself.' The husband 婿 [xu] said: 'I would rather die myself than have you die.' [0422a06] "When the prince 太子 [tai zi] saw the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] approaching from afar, he was greatly pleased and went to welcome him with a bow, then greeted him, asking: 'Where have you come from? Was your journey arduous? What do you seek?' The brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] said: 'I have come from a distant place, my whole body aches, and I am very hungry and thirsty.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] immediately invited the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] to sit, and brought out fruits, berries, and water, placing them before him. After the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] drank the water and ate the fruits, he said to the prince 太子 [tai zi]: 'I am from the kingdom of Kurū 鳩留國 [jiu liu guo]. I have long heard that the prince 太子 [tai zi] loves giving alms 布施 [bu shi] and his fame has spread in all ten directions. I am very poor and wish to beg something from the prince 太子 [tai zi].' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'I have nothing I love to give you. All my possessions have been given away, I have nothing to give you.' The brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] said: 'If you have no possessions, give me your two children to be my servants, who can care for me in my old age.' This happened three times. The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'You have come from afar, wishing to have my children, how can I not give them to you?' At that time, the two children were playing. The prince 太子 [tai zi] called to his two children, saying: 'The brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] has come from afar to beg for you, and I have already promised him. You should go with him.' The two children ran into their father's armpit, tears streaming down their faces, and said: 'We have seen brahmins 婆羅門 [po luo men] many times, but we have never seen such a kind. This is not a brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men], but a ghost 鬼 [gui]. Our mother went to gather fruits and has not returned yet, and our father is giving us to a ghost 鬼 [gui] as food, we will surely die. If our mother comes and cannot find us, she will be like a cow searching for its calf, weeping and wailing with sorrow.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'I have already promised. How can I stop it? This is a brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men], not a ghost 鬼 [gui], and he will never eat you. You should go with him.' The brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] said: 'I wish to leave quickly, fearing that if their mother comes, I will not be able to leave. You give them to me with good intentions, but if their mother comes, she will ruin your good intentions.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] replied: 'Since I was born, I have never regretted giving alms 布施 [bu shi], not even by a hair's breadth.'

When I attain the supreme and equal Path 道 [dao], I will naturally deliver you.' The two children said to their father: 'Please convey our apologies to our mother. The mother in the mountain felt an itch under her left foot, her right eye twitched, and milk flowed from both breasts. The mother then thought to herself: 'I have never had such strange omens. [0422b21] "At that time, Śakra, the King of the Second Trāyastriṃśa Heavens 第二忉利天王釋 [di er dao li tian wang shi], knowing that the prince 太子 [tai zi] had given his children away, feared that the consort 妃 [fei] would ruin his good intentions, so he transformed into a lion and squatted in the middle of the road. The consort 妃 [fei] said to the lion 師子 [shi zi]: 'You are the king 王 [wang] of beasts, and I am also a prince's 王子 [wang zi] wife among humans. Since we are both in the mountain, please move aside a little so I can pass. I have two children, both still very young, and they have not eaten since morning, they are only waiting for me.' The lion 師子 [shi zi], knowing that the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] had gone far, then rose and moved aside, allowing the consort 妃 [fei] to pass. When the consort 妃 [fei] returned, she saw the prince 太子 [tai zi] sitting alone, and did not see her two children. She went to their grass hut to look for them but did not find them. She went to the children's hut to search for them but did not find them. She went to the water's edge where the children usually played but also did not find them. She only saw the animals and birds they played with, such as deer, lions, and macaques, all throwing themselves down and wailing in front of Mandī 曼坻 [man chi]. The pool where they played had dried up. Mandī 曼坻 [man chi] then returned to the prince 太子 [tai zi] and asked the prince 太子 [tai zi]: 'Where are the two children?' The prince 太子 [tai zi] did not answer. Mandī 曼坻 [man chi] again said: 'The children used to run towards me, carrying fruits from afar, falling to the ground and then getting up and jumping, calling out: "Mother has come home to see us." When we sat, they were always by my side, and if they saw dust on my body, they would wipe it off for me. Now I do not see the children, nor do the children come to cling to me. To whom have they been given? Now that I do not see them, my heart is broken. Tell me their whereabouts quickly, do not let me go mad.' This happened three times, and the prince 太子 [tai zi] did not answer. Mandī 曼坻 [man chi] became even more sorrowful and said: 'It is bearable not to see the two children, but the prince's 太子 [tai zi] not answering makes me even more confused and distressed.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'A brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] from the kingdom of Kurū 鳩留國 [jiu liu guo] came and begged me for my two children, so I gave them to him.' When the consort 妃 [fei] heard the prince's 太子 [tai zi] words, she was shocked and fell to the ground like a collapsing mountain, rolling and weeping uncontrollably. The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'Stop for a moment. Do you remember our original vow at the time of Buddha Dīpaṃkara 提和竭羅佛 [ti he jie luo fu] in the past? At that time, I was the son of a brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men], named Vaibhāvika 鞞多衛 [bing duo wei]. You were the daughter of a brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men], named Sudarśanā 須陀羅 [xu tuo luo]. You entrusted two stems of flowers to me to offer to the Buddha 佛 [fu], and made a vow, saying: "May I always be your wife in future lives, inseparable whether beautiful or ugly." At that time, I made a vow with you, saying: "If you wish to be my wife, you must follow my will, giving alms wherever you wish without going against people's intentions, only not giving away your parents. All other alms shall be according to my will." You answered me then, saying yes. Now that I have given my children as alms, are you going against my good intentions?' When the consort 妃 [fei] heard the prince's 太子 [tai zi] words, her mind opened, and she recognized her past lives, agreeing to follow the prince 太子 [tai zi] in giving alms 布施 [bu shi] to quickly attain what her heart desired.

[0422c23] "Śakra, the King of Devas 天王釋 [tian wang shi], seeing the prince's 太子 [tai zi] giving alms 布施 [bu shi] in this manner, immediately descended to test the prince 太子 [tai zi], to know what he sought. He transformed into a brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] with twelve deformities, came before the prince 太子 [tai zi] and said: 'I have always heard that the prince 太子 [tai zi] loves giving alms 布施 [bu shi] and grants whatever is asked for without going against wishes, so I have come here, wishing to beg for your consort 妃 [fei].' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'Good! My consort 妃 [fei] can be given.' The consort 妃 [fei] said: 'If you give me to someone else now, who will support the prince 太子 [tai zi]?' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'If I do not give you as alms now, how can I achieve the supreme and equal degree of enlightenment?' The prince 太子 [tai zi] washed the brahmin's 婆羅門 [po luo men] hands with water, led his consort 妃 [fei], and handed her over to him. Śakra 釋 [shi] knew that the prince 太子 [tai zi] had no regrets whatsoever. All the devas 諸天 [zhu tian] praised him, and the heavens and earth greatly shook. The brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] then led the consort 妃 [fei] away. After walking seven steps, he immediately brought the consort 妃 [fei] back and entrusted her to the prince 太子 [tai zi], saying: 'Do not give her to anyone else.' The prince 太子 [tai zi] said: 'Why do you not take her? Is there something wrong with her? Among all women, this woman is good. She is the present prince's 國王子 [guo wang zi] wife, and her father had only this one daughter. This woman, for my sake, threw herself into boiling water and fire, and never avoided coarse and bad food and drink. She is diligent in what she does, and her face is beautiful. The king 王 [wang] was greatly alarmed when he heard this, and immediately called the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] and had him bring the children into the palace 宮 [gong]. The king 王 [wang], his consorts 夫人 [fu ren], his attendants, and the palace 後宮 [hou gong] women, upon seeing the two children from afar, were all choked with emotion. The king 王 [wang] asked the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men]: 'How did you get these children?' The brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] replied: 'I begged for them from the prince 太子 [tai zi].' The king 王 [wang] called the two children and wanted to embrace them, but the children cried and refused to be embraced. The king 王 [wang] asked the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men]: 'How much do you want for selling the children?' Before the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] could answer, the boy said: 'The boy is worth one thousand silver coins and one hundred special cattle; the girl is worth two thousand gold coins and two hundred female cattle.' The king 王 [wang] said: 'Sons are precious to people, why is the son cheaper and the daughter more expensive?' The child said: 'The palace 後宮 [hou gong] women have no kinship with the king 王 [wang], some come from humble origins or are merely servants, but if the king 王 [wang] favors them, they become noble, clothed in precious garments and eating all kinds of delicacies. The king 王 [wang] has only one son, but he exiled him to the deep mountain, and day by day he only enjoys himself with the palace 宮中 [gong zhong] women, completely without any thought of his son, thus clearly showing that sons are cheap and daughters are expensive.' When the king 王 [wang] heard these words, he was deeply moved and saddened, tears streaming down his face, saying: 'I have wronged you. Why do you not let me embrace you? Are you angry with me? Are you afraid of the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men]?' The child said: 'We dare not resent the great king 大王 [da wang], nor are we afraid of the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men]. We were once the great king's 大王 [da wang] grandchildren, but now we are someone's servants. How can someone's servants be embraced by a king 國王 [guo wang]? That is why we dare not.' When the king 王 [wang] heard the children's words, his sorrow doubled. He immediately paid the brahmin 婆羅門 [po luo men] the price as they had stated.
