[0412a06] Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in Rajagriha (王舍城 [wang she cheng]) on Gridhrakuta Mountain (靈鳥頂山 [ling niao ding shan]), together with a large assembly of twelve hundred and fifty Bhikṣus and five hundred Bodhisattvas.

[0412a07] At that time, the Venerable Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]) resided in the Jetavana (止頓舍衛國 [zhi dun she wei guo]) country. Having completed the three summer months and prepared new robes and alms-bowls, he put on his monastic attire and, accompanied by a hundred newly-ordained Bhikṣus, set out on a journey through various countries. They traveled to the great city of Rajagriha (王舍大城 [wang she da cheng]) and Gridhrakuta Mountain (靈鳥頂山 [ling niao ding shan]).

[0412a10] Thereupon, the Venerable Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]) arrived at the Buddha's abode, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and stood aside. Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]) asked the World-Honored One, "What should a great Bodhisattva (菩薩大士 [pu sa da shi]) practice to attain all wondrous meritorious virtues (奇特功德之法 [qi te gong de zhi fa]), achieve wisdom that is unmoving and fearless (無動畏之慧 [wu dong wei zhi hui]), extraordinary insight (超異之智 [chao yi zhi zhi]), unleash eloquence, illuminate thoroughly, enter all wisdom, instruct sentient beings, enable them to attain liberation and sever doubts (狐疑 [hu yi]), demonstrate all wisdom with skillful means (善權方便 [shan quan fang bian]), have words and actions correspond, constantly understand the intentions of all Buddhas (諸佛 [zhu fu]) through skillful questioning, and be able to uphold all laws heard (所聞法 [suo wen fa]) and swiftly attain all wisdom (一切智 [yi qie zhi])?"

[0412a10] yú shì, xián zhě lài zhā hé luó xíng dào fú suǒ, jī shǒu fú zú, què zhù yī miàn. lài zhā hé luó wèn shì zūn yán: “pú sà dà shì fèng xíng hé děng, dé yī qiè qí tè gōng dé zhī fǎ, zhì wú dòng wèi zhī huì,, chāo yì zhī zhì; fā qiǎn biàn cái, guāng míng chè zhào, rù yī qiè zhì, jiào shòu zhòng shēng; lìng dé jiě tuō duàn yú hú yí, yǐ shàn quán fāng biàn shì yī qiè zhì; yán xíng xiāng yīng, suǒ wèn zhū fú, cháng yǐ qiǎo biàn dé zhū fú yì; yī qiè suǒ wén fǎ, jiē néng shòu chí jí dǎi yī qiè zhì?”

[0412a17] Thereupon, the Venerable Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]) praised the Buddha with verses, asking him, and the verses said:

"How does a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) fulfill their practice? What are the actions that are truly profound?
Complete in wisdom and vows of merit, now, O Honored One among men (人中尊 [ren zhong zun]), explain this.
With a wondrous body of golden hue, accumulated with supreme virtues, O Honored One among men (人中尊 [ren zhong zun]).
Saving and protecting sentient beings, may the Buddha (佛 [fu]) explain the unsurpassed practice.
How does one attain inexhaustible wisdom (無盡智 [wu jin zhi]), immeasurable Dhāraṇī (總持 [zong chi]), and the supreme path of awakening?
How does one achieve impartial conduct? Resolving the doubts (狐疑 [hu yi]) of all people.
Joyful in samsara (生死 [sheng si]) for countless eons (無數億劫 [wu shu yi jie]), their mind never feels defiled or weary.
Having seen countless suffering people, skillfully teach them to be enlightened,
Purifying their Buddha-land (佛國 [fu guo]) with a complete retinue, and so too with light and longevity for all beings.
All that is spoken is tranquil. May the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) explain the supreme practice,
Subduing demonic attendants (魔官屬 [mo guan shu]), severing all views, and escaping from desires and mental constructs.
How are the meanings of the sutra teachings (經法義 [jing fa yi]) expounded? May the Buddha (佛 [fu]) explain all true practices.
Of upright and excellent form, full of eloquence, speaking with a soft voice (柔軟音 [rou ruan yin]) for all people.
Saturating the world like timely rain, may the Buddha (佛 [fu]) explain all awakened practices.
What is spoken is subtle like kaṭaka (羯隨 [jie sui]), a pure Brahman (梵 [fan]) sound, without doubt, with a clear and wise voice.
The assembly thirsts for the Dharma (經法 [jing fa]), so nourish everyone with sweet dew.
If there are those who wish to learn the venerable Buddha path (尊佛道 [zun fu dao]), they should diligently advance their aspirations to practice the Dharma.
What the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) teaches is all impartial, may the Dharma King (法王 [fa wang]) explain it in due time.
I wish to hear the true path. The Buddha (佛 [fu]), Deva of Devas (天中天 [tian zhong tian]), knows my intention.
Now I dare not disturb the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]). May you kindly explain the supreme practice."

 云何講說經法義?  願佛解說諸實行;

[0412c12] The Buddha said to Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]), "A Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) has four dharmas to attain pure conduct. What are the four? First, when practicing as a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), having no intention to harm others. Second, abandoning flattery and false conduct, delighting in solitude. Third, giving away all possessions without stinginess or seeking recompense. Fourth, constantly aspiring to seek the Dharma (法 [fa]) day and night, and not seeking fault in those who expound the Dharma. These are the four dharmas by which a Bodhisattva Mahasattva (菩薩摩訶薩 [pu sa mo he sa]) attains pure conduct."

[0412c17] The Buddha then spoke in verses:

"Their mind is not attached to defiled dharmas (塵垢法 [chen gou fa]),
Then there is no evil flaw or blemish.
Their resolve is not weary of the teachings and discussions (教論法 [jiao lun fa]),
Then they can attain the unsurpassed path.
Although they encounter the unworthy, their mind is always single,
Pervasively entering the roots of evil paths.
Renouncing home and studying the Way, they have no regrets,
Dwelling in the mountains, desiring liberation.
Dwelling in solitude and stillness, nothing arises,
Their mind is not attached to wealth, gain, or form.
Abandoning their body without cherishing life,
They act like a lion, fearless.
Their mind is joyful and knows contentment,
Like a bird flying, without fear.
All worldly things are impermanent,
They aspire to the Buddha-path (佛道 [fu dao]) of great wisdom.
Always delighting in solitude like a rhinoceros,
Without fear like a lion.
Their mind is not afraid, nor do they have coarse aspirations.
If they receive offerings, there is no increase or decrease.
Abandoning evil speech and wrong views,
Wise in great actions, aspiring to the path of liberation.
I am the protector of all in the world,
My intention is skillful means, without negligence.
Their intention is to uphold precepts for the sake of all paths,
Their mind is not attached to any affection.
Carefully following right conduct like saving a fire,
Always seeking the supreme and subtle practices of the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]).
Having escaped emptiness and non-thought,
Fully endowed with various aspects, truly tranquil.
Their dwelling is peaceful, and their wisdom is clear,
Attaining the taste of sweet dew, always joyful.
If they attain the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) awakened mind (覺道意 [jue dao yi]),
They are always pure and without difficulty.
With Dhāraṇī (總持 [zong chi]) and eloquence, their mind is unified,
Enduring all suffering without seeking recompense.
If there are Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) who hear of this practice,
And wish to seek the Buddha-path (佛道 [fu dao]), they should rejoice.
Always diligently striving, free from laziness,
Understanding impurity and ignorance, their intention is not harmful."

 捐棄軀體不惜命,  行如師子無所畏;

They will offer offerings to those without proper conduct, to flattering people, and to the ignorant. They will offer offerings to the ignorant: those greedy for food and clothing, without an upright heart, jealous of lineage, flattering and harboring evil, without a simple heart, deceiving venerable elders and family members, all for the sake of offerings. They will slander each other, their minds coveting wealth and gain, entering various provinces and countries, not remembering to expound the Dharma (說法 [shuo fa]) to enlighten people, and without skillful means. They will have no wisdom among the multitude, considering themselves wise. If they see another's wisdom as a good teacher, they will belittle it. If there are those without proper conduct, they will be instruments of destruction. They will seek each other's faults, abandoning diligent practice, becoming ignorant and lazy, not cultivating much wisdom, and destroying the Dharma for each other. They will separate from assemblies and form grudges, engaging in disputes, thinking others lack proper conduct while they uphold the Dharma. They do not observe the precepts, do not wish to hear the Dharma (聞法 [wen fa]), and do not practice diligently. They are born into poverty, into destitute families, and when they become Śramaṇas (沙門 [sha men]), they only worry about seeking wealth. Wherever they are, they cannot find peace, let alone if their minds are disturbed. Although they practice the merits of the Buddha (佛功德 [fu gong de]) with a single mind, they continue to cling to the benefits of family life, considering themselves Śramaṇas (沙門 [sha men])."

Fifth, being born among evil friends (惡知識 [e zhi shi]). Sixth, having many illnesses. Seventh, having a short lifespan in the place of birth. Eighth, dying an untimely death. These are the eight evil things for a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) who falls into an evil trap. Why is that? Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo])! I do not say that making a vow with words makes one a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), nor do I say that a person who acts deceptively is practicing purity, nor do I say that flattery is a Bodhisattva practice (菩薩行 [pu sa xing]), nor do I say that attachment to food and clothing is offering to the Buddha (供養佛 [gong yang fu]), nor do I say that arrogance leads to pure wisdom, nor do I say that acting with self-perceived wisdom removes the defilement of doubt. I do not say that the jealous have pure intentions, nor do I say that those who seek much gain attain Dhāraṇī (總持 [zong chi]), nor do I say that those who do not perceive the virtue of sincerity will be without hindrance and be born in good places, nor do I say that those who are greedy for lineage and attached to form will attain a pure body. I do not say that those with (wrong) thoughts will attain the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) settled mind, I do not say that those who do not act sincerely will attain purity, I do not say that the arrogant will attain a pure mind, I do not say that those who do not know contentment will love the Dharma (法 [fa]), I do not say that those who cherish their body and life aspire to the Dharma (法 [fa])."

[0413c09] The Buddha said, "Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo])! I do not blame the six external teachers (外六師 [wai liu shi]); I blame these foolish people more than the six external teachers (外六師 [wai liu shi]). Why? Their words are different, their actions are different, and they deceive all Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) and people in the world (世間人 [shi jian ren])."

[0413c12] The Buddha then spoke in verses:

"The ignorant and chaotic are negligent,
Disrespectful and greedy,
Associated with defilement, giving rise to desires.
Such people are far from the path.
Greedy for offerings, laziness increases,
Due to lack of diligence, faith is lost,
Then pure conduct is destroyed, and true precepts are lost,
Those who violate the prohibitions lose the good path.
Born into a poor family, becoming a Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]),
Seeking offerings amidst poverty.
Like a person who is poor and has nothing,
Borrowing from others, hoping for wealth.
Greedy for offerings, dwelling in solitude,
Dwelling there, desiring self-realization,
Attaining supernormal powers and complete eloquence,
Abandoning family and accepting everything.
Not seeing the path, following chaotic actions,
Born into a poor and lowly family,
In ugliness, without power,
Falling into the land of arrogance and ignorance.
Becoming low and without virtue,
Their mind greedy for wealth and gain, indulging in negligence,
Later they will be born in a great evil place,
For billions of eons, without good traces.
If there is no greed for gain on the path,
All Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) and people (人民 [ren min]) will attain Buddhahood (佛 [fu]).
Like the wind of sandalwood (隨藍 [sui lan]), not disturbing people,
Because of offerings, they do not achieve self-perfection.
Without merit, depending on others,
Without diligent intention, losing good conduct,
Destroying the teachings and not accepting the Dharma (法 [fa]),
Unable to attain the wisdom of the path.
With sincere gain, they achieve the Buddha-Dharma (佛法 [fu fa]),
They will never lose their conduct as if on the path,
Their aspirations are very firm and always pure,
What they uphold is as it should be, that is the path.
I seek Buddhahood (佛 [fu]) without regret,
And offer my body and life to seek the sutra Dharma (經法 [jing fa]).
Such people abandon the Dharma (法 [fa]) and are not diligent,
Thus losing the meaning of phrases in the Dharma (道法 [dao fa]).
There is a great lamp, but none can see it.
I originally sought good and meaningful explanations.
As soon as I heard the teachings, I put them into practice,
Severing all desires.
Having heard various Buddha-Dharma (佛法 [fu fa]) teachings,
Unable to fully comprehend even one phrase of the Dharma (法句 [fa ju]),
How can those who do not practice the Dharma (非法行者 [fei fa xing zhe]) attain the path,
Like showing a path to the blind."

[0414a08] The Buddha said to Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]), "Innumerable eons ago, in the distant past, immeasurable and inconceivable. [0414a11] The Buddha said, "Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo])! The city was four hundred and eighty li (里 [li]) long and two hundred and eighty li (里 [li]) wide, built with seven treasures. It had eight gates leading out to the north and south, meticulously constructed and complete. At that time, human lifespan was ten billion nayutas (那術 [na shu]) of years."

When he was first born, a thousand treasuries naturally appeared, all containing seven treasures. In each treasury, royal treasures of various countries naturally appeared, each seven treasures high. As soon as Deguan (德光 [de guang]) was born, all the people in Jambudvipa (閻浮利 [yan fu li]) rejoiced greatly, and those imprisoned in jails were all liberated. Within seven days of Prince Deguan's (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) birth, he was not ignorant and was widely learned, complete in both the secular and the spiritual."

[0414a23] The Buddha said to Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]), "At that time, the Suddhāvāsa Devas (淨居諸天 [jing ju zhu tian]) came to Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) at midnight and said to him, 'Prince! You should not act negligently.' From then on, for ten thousand years, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) never slept or played. He never sang or danced, never indulged in music, never walked around or went sightseeing. He never craved his body, nor did he think of singing, dancing, or entertainment. He did not covet wealth, nor did he think of his home. He was not attached to provinces or countries, nor did he seek anything. He cherished nothing he possessed. He stood with a single mind, always in solitude, calming all difficulties, and gaining a little contentment. 'Those who are neither born nor die, body and life are impermanent, and cannot be cherished. All affection in the world will eventually separate. There is no one who can be a guide, disrupting the Dharma and committing crimes, filled with worry and fear. Ordinary people are never satisfied, and with the power of ignorance, they constantly delight in disputes. Now, I have fallen into a state of no practice. I wish to remain silent and inactive.' At that time, the Prince dwelt alone in solitude, without negligence, far from desires, practicing impartiality."

Between all the railings, there were eighty thousand treasure pillars, and each treasure pillar had sixty thousand treasure ropes intertwined. Each treasure rope had one hundred and forty billion belts tied to it. When the wind blew, they rubbed against each other, emitting the sounds of hundreds of thousands of musical instruments. In front of all the railings, there were five hundred female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]), skilled in playing music and adept at singing and dancing, achieving the highest artistry. They were fully accomplished and could delight all the kings of countries in the world. These were provided to Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]). The King instructed the female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]), saying, 'You should put aside all other matters and perform music day and night to please the Prince, making him feel content. Do not let him see anything unwholesome.' Various offerings were placed by all the railings. Food was given to the hungry, drinks to the thirsty, chariots and horses to those who desired them, and clothing, flowers, incense, seats, dwellings, and lamps were provided according to their requests. Gold, silver, moon-pearls, lapis lazuli, crystal, elephants, horses, and all seven treasures and adornments were provided to the world. In the center of the city, a palace of seven treasures was built for Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]), with eight intersecting towers. In one lecture hall, there were four hundred million beds for the Prince. In the city, there were gardens with flowering trees and jewel trees, which were always blooming and completely covered everywhere."

[0414c18] "At that time, in all the rooms, there were five hundred young men, aged between sixteen and twenty, all virgins, selected from all countries. These young men were brought into the city, all clever and capable of everything, knowing all that happened in the world. Furthermore, eighty billion young women were brought into the city, beautiful and graceful, aged sixteen to twenty, all skilled in singing and dancing, able to please men, speaking softly and skillfully, their words always appropriate, neither too long nor too short, neither fat nor thin, neither white nor black, their mouths emitting the fragrance of utpala (優鉢 [you bo]) flowers, their bodies emitting the fragrance of candanā (栴檀 [zhan tan]) wood, all like celestial maidens, all of one mind, surrounding Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]), playing music and singing. Thereupon, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) thought, 'I have naturally acquired great enemies now, a multitude disturbing my purity. I should now practice without attachment.' Thereupon, the Prince became sorrowful and unhappy. Just as a person in captivity is unhappy, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) was likewise. Seeing the female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]) and their music, his mind was not negligent, nor did he find it extraordinary, nor did he covet the city, nor was he attached to chariots. For a full thousand years, he never cherished form, nor did he think of it; he removed all thoughts of sounds, smells, tastes, and sensations, always concentrating his mind, thinking, 'This is an assembly of my enemies. How can I leave this place of enemies and attain liberation, practicing without negligence?' At that time, the female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]) reported to King Ezhenwu (頞真無 [e zhen wu]), 'The Prince does not listen to music and is sorrowful and unhappy.'"

[0415a08] The Buddha said to Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]), "At that time, King Ezhenwu (頞真無 [e zhen wu]), accompanied by eighty thousand minor kings, went to Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]), weeping and shedding tears, sorrowful and unhappy, collapsing to the ground in despair. Attendants immediately helped him up and supported him. The King then spoke verses to the Prince, saying:

"'May my son behold my treasures,
They appeared naturally when you were first born.
Who has troubled you? Tell me now,
I shall heavily punish them.
Now behold this, like heaven.
I follow your wishes,
What is lacking for the Prince now?
I can grant whatever you desire.
Look at these desires with pure and good eyes,
The female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]) together playing music,
Enjoy yourself with them, dispel your sorrow,
All are skilled in music and always joyful.
You should listen to these beautiful sounds,
The music played in harmony and sorrowful.
Now is indeed the time for enjoyment,
There are lotus flowers in the pond.
In the garden, there are flowers, leaves, and fruits,
Various wondrous things, without defilement.
Behold this supreme and free wisdom,
You can rejoice and pity me once.
Enter the pond and bathe at your leisure,
There are lotus flowers, blue, yellow, and white,
Various red flowers illuminating people.
Why are you not happy, my son, beholding this?
Cormorants (鸕鶿 [lu ci]), parrots (鸚鵡 [ying wu]), Kojī (拘耆 [ju qi]) cranes,
Kinnara (拘那 [ju na]) and Qifu (耆匐 [qi fu]) with sorrowful sounds,
Various fragrant white flowers like snow,
Who, hearing these sounds, would not rejoice?
The bright lecture hall of impartial power,
With golden and lapis lazuli railings,
All the most excellent treasures,
The sounds of the trees emitting billions.
Offerings are placed by the railings for your sake,
Thousands of female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]) playing instruments,
Also hearing the singing of celestial maidens,
Why is your mind not pleased, my son?
Now the Prince is equally beautiful and excellent,
You can enjoy yourself, listen to my words.
Your parents stand here with tears in their eyes,
Do you not pity us, my son?'"

[0415b03] "At that time, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) answered the King with verses, saying:

"'Those who possess merit,
Are free from all evil views.
I am weary of suffering and joy,
Not coveting unprofitable desires.
I see all sentient beings in the five paths,
In samsara (生死 [sheng si]).
Now I shall speak of liberation,
My father King, listen to my words.
No one bothers me,
What should I say now?
I do not covet desires,
How can I enjoy singing and dancing?
All desires,
I see as enemies.
Defilements and attachments,
Follow people, clinging to the five paths.
These female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]),
Are ignorant and delight in them.
These are all demonic affairs,
Following people into great bondage.
All holy and virtuous ascetics,
Never praise these.
Those who practice these desires,
Are the roots of all causes and conditions.
The bodies of these female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]),
Are like leather wrapping a skeleton,
Muscles and bones supporting each other,
Like an illusion, without true benefit.
Like a painted vase,
Filled with impurity inside,
Like being in a graveyard,
How can I delight in this?
The sounds of the music played,
Have neither performer nor receiver.
All joy is unreal,
Understanding this, one is not deluded.
If one cultivates thoughts,
One will lose single-mindedness.
Those who follow the sounds of defilement,
Are like foolish old people.
All trees,
Sometimes flourish,
But cannot always be obtained,
Sometimes there is no joy.
Their fruits are impermanent,
And do not always cling to the tree.
Since I understand this,
How can I play with a short life?
Parents cannot be relied upon,
Nor brothers and wives,
Relatives are also like this,
At the time of death, one is not independent.
All possessions,
Are like dew on grass.
One should not indulge their mind,
Acting negligently at will.
This mind cannot be filled,
Like the great ocean.
Affection is vast,
Having gained, one seeks more.
People, due to greed for desire,
Each become lazy.
None can be diminished,
Like Mount Sumeru (須彌山 [xu mi shan]).
People are rooted in intention,
Body and life pass quickly,
Like flowing river water,
When they meet, they separate again.
All things are destroyed and do not last long,
Like the appearance of lightning.
Clinging to the desires of the three realms,
Is to be ignorant.
Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) came and told me,
Do not be negligent,
Those who practice as Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]),
Do not covet anything.
I wish to attain the Buddha-path (佛道 [fu dao]),
Out of compassion for all people.
Not by indulging in lustful conduct,
Can one attain the Buddha-path (佛道 [fu dao]).
Those who indulge in desires,
Become slaves to their minds,
Then they destroy themselves,
And cannot establish merit.
I will never accept desires,
Nor will I harbor anger.
Like a bird caught in a net,
How can one be free?
Manifesting evil thoughts,
One binds oneself,
The mind cannot be free,
It is an empty gathering without benefit,
Clinging to this fearful body,
Like a poisonous tree's flower.
Who is the honorable one among men,
Who crosses rapid waters?
Look at all people,
Falling into evil paths.
Disputing empty phrases,
Giving rise to all wrong views (邪見 [xie jian]).
King, you should know my intention,
I wish to liberate these beings.
Not coveting the law of arrogance,
Quickly attaining boundless liberation,
Awakening those who are asleep,
Healing the sick.
Removing worries,
Establishing the traces of joy,
Wishing to liberate the three thousand worlds,
Those bound by sounds.
Expounding good and meaningful sutras,
Satisfying those who have been poor for a long time,
Taming the unaccomplished,
Pulling them out of evil paths.
Giving sight to the blind,
Enabling the deaf to hear,
Creating the lamp of liberation,
Establishing wisdom and supernormal powers.
Enabling all people in the three realms,
To attain the equality of the three kinds of patience,
Creating the rain of compassion,
Crossing the misty shores.
Manifesting radiant light for all people,
Then holding the good awakened mind,
Enabling them to be liberated and shaded.
Raining down various medicines,
Enabling all to attain peace and comfort,
Thinking of this, father King,
Immediately sit with a single mind.
I have no more aspirations for any desires,
I only wish to seek the Buddha-path (佛道 [fu dao]),
Out of compassion for all people.
Towards those with desires,
I have no more aspirations,
Who is a wise person,
Who would enjoy being in this?
How can one violate prohibitions?
Making people's minds confused.
If one is attached to desire and form,
One will fall into a great evil path.
Who, practicing the Buddha-path (佛道 [fu dao]),
Would still be negligent?
People all flow with the current,
I will now go against the current.
It cannot be attained by words,
To attain the Buddha-path (佛道 [fu dao]).
One should emit compassionate light,
Illuminating all people.
I do not covet desires,
Nor am I attached to wealth.
I now wish, father King,
That you do not return with the multitude.
I wish to abandon the assembly,
And all provinces and countries,
People seek what is pleasing,
From this comes illness.
Controlling the mind and not being negligent,
Is better than gaining billions of provinces and countries.
One cannot be in desires,
And attain the Buddha-path (佛道 [fu dao]).
If one wishes to attain the unsurpassed,
Peaceful and joyful phrases,
One should go to a great mountain,
Sit under a tree,
Practicing dwelling in solitude,
One can attain the venerable awakened path.'"

  習此愛欲者,  為種因緣根;
  何所是人尊,  謂度駃水者;
  但欲索佛道,  用哀眾人故;

At that time, the Prince performed three kinds of practices. What are the three? First, standing. Second, walking meditation. Third, sitting meditation. He abandoned sleep and perfected the supreme practice, having attained the eight abodes (八住 [ba zhu]).

Having heard this, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi])'s hair stood on end, and he immediately shed tears, becoming sorrowful and unhappy. He clasped his hands and asked the Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) in verses:

"'I am in difficulty,
May the Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) have compassion on me.
Please stay and listen to my words,
I have something to ask.
You are walking in the sky,

[0416b23] Thereupon, the Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) spoke verses to Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]), saying:

"'His hair is soft and beautiful,
Excellent, like turning to the right,
His crown is majestic,
Beautiful like a mountain peak;
The light between his eyebrows,
Shining like the rising sun,
Naturally beautiful like turning to the right,
His color is as white as snow.
His awakened mind is pure,
His eyes are dark blue,
The Venerable One among men, the Son of Heaven,
His complexion is upright and beautiful.
His face is always joyful,
Emitting billions of immeasurable lights,
Pervading three thousand worlds,
Eliminating all evil paths.
The Buddha's (佛 [fu]) teeth in his mouth,
Are all pure and even,
Fresh and clean like Kumuda (拘文 [ju wen]) flowers,
Bright like the light of a good tree.
Twenty teeth without disorder,
Making forty in total,
The subtle and beautiful tongue in his mouth,
Can cover his own face.
The subtle words spoken from his mouth,
Make people joyful,
Always without flattery,
His Brahma (梵 [fan]) voice is very pure;
What the Buddha (佛 [fu]) expounds,
Surpasses hundreds of thousands of musical instruments,
Dispelling all doubts,
Making people joyful and beneficial.
Various merits without lack,
Skillfully resolving the meaning of the path,
Having understood the discerning Dharma (法 [fa]) flower,
Like hundreds of thousands of adornments.
The sound of the earth,
Emitting celestial music,
Like the sound of heaven,
The Buddha's (佛 [fu]) words are also like this.
Kinnara (真陀羅 [zhen tuo luo]) and Hē bēi (鶡鵯 [he bei]),
Kojī (拘耆 [ju qi]) and mandarin ducks (鴛鴦 [yuan yang]),
Wild geese (鴈 [yan]), cranes, and cormorants (鸕鶿 [lu ci]),
Kinnara (鳩那羅 [jiu na luo]) asked.
Their sound is like Brahma (梵 [fan]),
Soft and very harmonious,
Without flattery or shortcomings,
Understanding all meanings.
Excellent and extraordinary,
Pleasing the minds of the wise,
Pure and free from slander,
Without any thoughts or desires.
Skillfully practicing virtuous deeds,
Not hearing any flaws,
That Dharma (法 [fa]) practitioner, the True Awakened One,
His merits are like this.
The body of the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]),
Has various colors,
His arms are long, reaching his knees,
All seven parts are full;
His fingers are slender and beautiful,
With many wonders,
A body of golden hue,
His mind like a bright moon-pearl.
The soft hair on his body,
Turns upwards to the right,
His navel is round and raised,
His private parts are concealed.
His feet are flat,
With Dharma-wheel (相輪 [xiang lun]) marks underneath,
The Buddha's (佛 [fu]) knees are perfectly beautiful,
Even and of various colors.
He walks like a dragon king,
Like a lion's gait,
When walking, he bows his head silently,
All his senses are pure.
If people scatter flowers,
They transform into flower canopies,
Always increasing, never decreasing,
This is the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) true Dharma (法 [fa]).
Whether gaining or losing,
Suffering or comfort,
Praise or slander,
His mind does not increase or decrease.
Like a lotus flower,
Not stained by muddy water,
The true lion is like this,
None can compare to him.'"

  常無諸諛諂,  梵音甚清淨;
  手臂長出膝,  七合皆為滿;

[0417a15] Thereupon, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]), the son of the King, thought, "Now I hear of the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) majestic power, testifying to the sutra Dharma (經法 [jing fa]), the complete Sangha (眾僧 [zhong seng]), and impeccable conduct, existing in samsara (生死 [sheng si]) to counter evil actions. Ordinary people are mostly ungrateful, greedy for their own selves, and their actions are not upright. Living at home brings many flaws, and those who cling to desires will fall into suffering. Negligent conduct is shunned by the wise. Ignorance is darkness. In it, one should create an impartial lamp. The human mind is difficult to tame, names and forms are profound, the six sense faculties are never satisfied, and practices are not severed. One will encounter bitter and poisonous pain, discomfort, and affection as the root of fetters and shackles, and all sensations are difficult to abandon. Being together with existence leads to long-lasting enmity. Samsara (生死 [sheng si]) is difficult to sever, and people are often troubled by many affairs. The quickly deluded body is impermanent and will eventually return to death. There is little joy and much sorrow. The Buddha-Dharma (佛法 [fu fa]) is the supreme peace. One cannot establish meritorious conduct through defiled actions, greedy desires, or a negligent mind. Now I am in ignorance, unable totain single-minded concentration. One cannot delight in samsara (生死 [sheng si]), associate with evil people, or diligently cultivate the good path, let alone wish to attain the unsurpassed true path. I would rather throw myself eastward from a high building than let my family members create obstacles at the gate, preventing me from leaving."

[0417b02] The Buddha said to Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]), "At that time, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) threw himself towards Ji Yi Tathagata (吉義如來 [ji yi ru lai]), Arhat, Fully Enlightened One, and said, 'If the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) has all-knowing wisdom and can see everything, then today, Deva of Devas (天中天 [tian zhong tian]), please remember to save me.' Thereupon, Ji Yi Tathagata (吉義如來 [ji yi ru lai]), Arhat, Fully Enlightened One, extended his right arm, and his hand emitted light that illuminated Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]). In that light, there naturally appeared a hundred-petaled lotus flower as large as a chariot wheel. This lotus flower emitted hundreds of thousands of lights that shone everywhere. Thereupon, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) stood on this lotus flower, wishing to go to Ji Yi Tathagata (吉義如來 [ji yi ru lai]), Arhat, Fully Enlightened One. He clasped his hands from afar, prostrated three times, and took refuge. At that time, Ji Yi Tathagata (吉義如來 [ji yi ru lai]) turned his light back to illuminate him. Thereupon, the Prince followed the light and went to the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) abode, bowed his head at the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) feet, and saw the World-Honored One's (世尊 [shi zun]) senses were tranquil and settled. At that time, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) praised Ji Yi Tathagata (吉義如來 [ji yi ru lai]) with verses, saying:

"'I have not long seen the name of the King of Physicians,
Now I am able to see the Buddha (佛 [fu]).
How can one stand in impure actions,
And yet attain all dharmas?
Last night, at midnight,
I heard from the Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) that the Buddha (佛 [fu]) is without thought.
As soon as I heard it, I became sorrowful and no longer happy.
Who is this person without negligence?
To those who have lost their way, he shows the right path,
Those without eyes gain equal sight.
Now, I wish you to reveal the great path to me,
With compassion, heal illnesses and purify faith.
May the poor attain wealth and joy,
And those imprisoned be liberated.
Sever my doubts and remove all defilements,
May you explain the path and conduct.
Reveal to me the true path, far from external ways,
Creating a lamp in the darkness,
Removing defilements from those who harm,
May the great King of Physicians dispel my doubts.
May you liberate me from the path of samsara (生死道 [sheng si dao]),
Severing all my attachments,
Enabling me to cross the sea of sorrow,
And enter the Mahayana (大乘 [da cheng]) through the eight paths.
Now, life is short, and the Dharma (法 [fa]) life is exhausted,
There are many obstacles to meritorious practices,
Those without merit do not fulfill their wishes,
Now that I have begun, I wish for my doubts to be resolved.
Now I hear the guide, please resolve the key point,
How can a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) be negligent?
To be able to uphold the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) venerable and subtle path,
And liberate sentient beings from the suffering of samsara (生死惱 [sheng si nao]).'"

The female entertainers (采女 [cai nu]) replied, 'Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) is not here; we don't know where he is.' Thereupon, King Ezhenwu (頞真無 [e zhen wu]), upon hearing that the Prince was not present, immediately collapsed to the ground, and together with several thousand attendants, wept aloud. King Ezhenwu (頞真無 [e zhen wu]), hearing the deity's words, went eastward with his relatives, ministers, the Prince's concubines and female entertainers (婇女 [cai nu]), and eighty-four billion nayutas (那術 [na shu]) and hundreds of thousands of people, to the abode of Ji Yi Tathagata (吉義如來 [ji yi ru lai]), bowed his head at the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) feet, and stood aside."

Do not have a greedy heart or cherish anything. At the right time, all should wholeheartedly help and generously give.' Thereupon, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) and his relatives together offered Ji Yi Tathagata (吉義如來 [ji yi ru lai]) ornaments, palaces, and cities, without any reservation in their hearts. They prepared five hundred kinds of meals daily to offer to the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and the Bhikṣu Sangha. For all Bhikṣus, they built rooms with red sandalwood (赤栴檀香 [chi zhan tan xiang]) and seven treasures. They made walking meditation paths with mani (摩尼 [mo ni]) jewels, upon which they erected precious overlapping canopies. To the north and south, there were rows of flowering trees, and by the side were bathing ponds where utpala (優鉢 [you bo]) flowers bloomed. The edges were pure and spotless, and the flowers had a hundred thousand petals, each adorned with hundreds of thousands of seats. Each Bhikṣu had these provisions. At that time, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) ensured that the Bhikṣus did not worry about clothing, nor did they think that other Bhikṣus alone received robes and blankets."

At the place where the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) was cremated, they made offerings of all the flowers, incenses, pounded incenses, mixed incenses, and music of the world. Each was offered five hundred seven-jeweled canopies, and hundreds of thousands of musical instruments, all the flowers and jewel trees of Jambudvipa (閻浮利 [yan fu li]) were used to make offerings to the stupas. Each lit hundreds of thousands of lamps, and the oil for each lamp cost hundreds of thousands, and all fragrant flowers were scattered. In this way, he made complete offerings for billions of years. Afterwards, Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) renounced his home, studied the Way, and became a Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]). He wore the three Dharma (法 [fa]) robes, constantly went begging for alms, never involved himself in worldly affairs, and never slept. He had no thoughts of food or clothing. For a full four hundred million years, he always bestowed the Dharma (法 [fa]) as charity, never considering himself to exist. Nor did he doubt others, let alone seek offerings. He had no words of samsara (生死 [sheng si]), and when expounding the Dharma (說法 [shuo fa]) to the multitude, he did not encourage them to be born in heaven. [0418b01] The Buddha said to Raṣṭrapāla (賴吒和羅 [lai zha he luo]), "For this reason, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva (菩薩大士 [pu sa da shi]) who wishes to attain the unsurpassed true path (無上正真道 [wu shang zheng zhen dao]) and supreme enlightenment should learn the conduct of Prince Deguan (德光太子 [de guang tai zi]) and the teaching of tranquility, abandoning affection and negligent conduct. When I sought the unsurpassed true path (無上正真道 [wu shang zheng zhen dao]), I practiced diligently with such hardship. These people who are without proper conduct, attached to food and clothing, worried and unceasing, for the sake of offerings, distance themselves from the Buddha-Dharma (佛法 [fu fa]), and their learning is of no benefit. They defile the Śramaṇas (沙門 [sha men]) and corrupt the Bodhisattva Dharma (菩薩法 [pu sa fa]). They indulge their body, speech, and mind, making false vows, abandoning their original practice. They are greedy for robes, bedding, and medicine for illness, and have no sense of shame. They do not delight in proper conduct or learn the impermanent Dharma (法 [fa]). They do not uphold venerable teachings, distance themselves from the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) conduct, and abandon their intention on the path, not delighting in the practice of liberation."

[0418b12] The Buddha then spoke in verses:

"Those who study the path and are greedy for gain and food,
Then they do not delight in the practice of the Ten Powers (十力行 [shi li xing]),
Abandoning the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) hundred virtues and teachings,
Due to seeking gain and offerings, they fall into other families.
Stubborn, vile, and shameless,
Indulging themselves and falling into all gatherings of greed,
Giving rise to defilements and falling into evil actions,
Then they say they have virtuous conduct.
Their body is in solitude, but they wander in the city,
Acting negligently for the sake of gain and offerings,
Far from liberation, departing from the empty ground,
Therefore, they should abandon and leave all existences.
They do not revere the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and the true Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]),
Distancing themselves from the merits of the Sangha (眾僧 [zhong seng]),
Abandoning the good path and falling into the three evil realms,
Thus losing the eight hundred venerable practices.
If anyone hears this sutra,
May they purify their minds and always be diligent,
It is difficult to meet Buddhas (佛 [fu]) for countless eons,
Therefore, they should practice according to the Dharma (法 [fa]).
Those who speak of attaining the Mahayana (大乘 [da cheng]) of the Buddha (佛 [fu]),
Should always contemplate these meritorious phrases,
Having contemplated, truly abide with a single mind,
Then they will attain the unobstructed and peaceful path.
Always establish the wise and holy, practicing the contemplation of virtue,
Their minds content and self-controlled,
You should not abandon the good field,
Lest you fall into the five paths like ignorant people.
Practice dwelling in solitude and always be diligent,
Abide, do not belittle yourself, do not make light of others,
Reprimand your own body and tranquilize your mind,
I originally upheld billions of Buddha's (佛 [fu]) admonitions.
Not cherishing body and life, with a simple mind,
Diligent in the Dharma (法 [fa]) and practicing respect,
Therefore, I always speak these words of instruction,
After practicing this, the path is not difficult.
If anyone hears this and rejoices in the Mahayana (大乘 [da cheng]),
But cannot be diligent or delights not in listening,
Those who are wise and delight in these words,
Later will abandon evil and grudges."
