This is the Chinese Buddhist Canon known as the Taisho, or more specifically the “Taisho Revised Tripitaka” (Takakusu Junjiro 1988). The collection consists of thousands of scrolls including foundational texts such as Agamas, Mahayana Sutras, Vinaya, Abhidharma, Tantras, Jatakas and Avadanas (former birth stoeries), commentaries, histories, catalog...

{1} The Path to Supreme Wisdom

The Bodhisattva-bhumi-mala-sutra, Volume 16, was composed by Holy Valiant Bodhisattva (聖勇菩薩 [sheng yong pu sa]) and others, and translated by Bhramacarya Shaode Huixun (梵才大師紹德慧詢 [fan cai da shi shao de hui xun]) and others, who were granted the title of Imperial Edict Translator (奉詔譯 [feng zhao yi]), and held positions such as Grand Master for Imperial Envoys (朝散大夫 [chao san da fu]) and Junior Minister of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices (試鴻臚少卿 [shi hong lu shao qing]) during the Song Dynasty (宋朝 [song chao]).

[0381b14] Loving and aspiring for supreme wisdom (無上智力 [wu shang zhi li]), carrying sentient beings to the excellent other shore (殊勝彼岸 [shu sheng bi an]), the sixth consciousness (第六意識 [di liu yi shi]) diligently cultivates the path of wisdom (智道 [zhi dao]), and truly practices generosity (布施 [bu shi]), seeking the fundamental practice (根本行 [gen ben xing]). This is where the profound meaning of the Dharma (法義 [fa yi]) is completely understood. By listening to the vanishing aspects (亡相 [wang xiang]) and cultivating the practice of generosity (布施法 [bu shi fa]), one accumulates pure and excellent wisdom power (殊勝智力 [shu sheng zhi li]), and realizes the unimpeded divine feet (神足 [shen zu]) of sentient beings. Completing the hearing and retention (聞持 [wen chi]), fully equipped with power and function, the path of practice (道行 [dao xing]) and meritorious connections (福緣 [fu yuan]) are the highest and most excellent practices (最上勝行 [zui shang sheng xing]). Tranquilly knowing and perfecting the practice of giving (施法 [shi fa]), sentient beings are violently bound by their realms. The four Brahma-viharas (四種梵行 [si zhong fan xing]) are aspired to be initiated, and the causes and conditions of living beings are free from bondage. Following the production of afflicting causes (煩惱因行 [fan nao yin xing]), preceptors (軌範師 [gui fan shi]) and others explain the noisy and the quiet (喧寂 [xuan ji]), obtaining precepts, upholding the Dharma, instructing, and verifying precepts. These four kinds of teachers (四種師範 [si zhong shi fan]) are sovereign, powerful, and indestructible. When a person's life ends, the seven precepts (七支戒 [qi zhi jie]) are abandoned. Moreover, one cultivates excellent wisdom (殊勝智解 [shu sheng zhi jie]), understanding the vast and tranquil causal karma (寂靜因業 [ji jing yin ye]). The covering and defiling actions cease suddenly, and the causes and conditions of suffering are quietly removed. The dharma of arrogance (我慢之法 [wo man zhi fa]) is purely eliminated. Bodhisattvas (菩提薩埵 [pu ti sa duo]) guide in this place, establishing the true meaning and benefit (真實義利 [zhen shi yi li]) through listening, aspiring to that practice, cultivating tranquility, initiating sincere and pure causal practices (淨妙因行 [jing miao yin xing]), and understanding the well-purified system (制度 [zhi du]). The torrents of affliction (瀑流煩惱 [pu liu fan nao]) are vast in their power. The ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]) is known without error and abandoned. The fundamental, pure, and excellent meaning of liberation (正解脫義 [zheng jie tuo yi]) follows the actions of Indra (帝釋 [di shi]) and all devas (諸天 [zhu tian]). Dwelling quietly without defilement, happily and purely, free from the meaning of creation, no obstacles arise. Without dispute, agitation ceases. Binding the body and mind is called tranquility (安靜 [an jing]). Sentient beings are without substance, a temporary composite of the four great elements (四大假合 [si da jia he]), incomparable, illusory, and difficult to describe, like a cluster of foam, a floating bubble, a mirage, an echo in a valley, a carved wooden figure with hanging threads, a mirror image, or the moon in water. The Buddha (佛 [fu]) said: "Expiration is difficult to guarantee inspiration." Cultivating the practice of the other shore (彼岸之法 [bi an zhi fa]) with quietude and stillness, one possesses pure and refined self-discipline. Such practice can thus be described. Noble sons (善男子 [shan nan zi]), the supreme generosity (上妙布施 [shang miao bu shi]) of country, city, wife, children, and body parts, understanding their nature, is neither impossible nor not impossible. It also says, "giving rise to the ultimate truth" implies this. Understanding the dharma of causes and conditions (緣法 [yuan fa]) and cultivating various practices, listening to the suchness of excellent Dharma (如如勝法 [ru ru sheng fa]) with wisdom. My view of defiled wisdom (染慧 [ran hui]) is a part of it. Speaking of defiled wisdom (染慧 [ran hui]), it is only self-severance. Discriminative karma (分別發業 [fen bie fa ye]) is also self-severance. The remaining mental factors belong to associated severance. Listening to the true Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]) without dullness, the path of practice (道行 [dao xing]) is equal and powerful in carrying. The pure teachings (清淨教法 [qing jing jiao fa]) are excellent in their exposition, and the function of hearing and retention (聞持 [wen chi]) is immeasurable. Practicing in this way brings peaceful purity.

{2} The Realization of Original Wisdom

[0381c13] How is the true original wisdom (真實本智 [zhen shi ben zhi]) realized as suchness (如 [ru])? Such wisdom (智 [zhi]) is in accord with the object. When the mind's contemplation is gone and speech is lost, this self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) attains nothing to attain (無所得 [wu suo de]), and happiness and freedom lead to peaceful action (安隱行 [an yin xing]). With an undefiled mind, the body and mind are at ease. True emptiness is free from all defilements. It leads to the arousal of great compassion and constant tranquility. The Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) generosity is all-pervasive, as in the thirty-first chapter (第三十一 [di san shi yi]) of the Honored One's (尊者 [zun zhe]) "Protection of the Nation" (護國 [hu guo]) original life story (本生之義 [ben sheng zhi yi]).

[0381c18] The king's appearance was rare in the world. His decrees preserved the original path of sentient beings. He had no attachment to rare worldly objects, always following and listening to the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) true fundamental characteristics. "World Honored One! Illness (病患 [bing huan]), old age (老相 [lao xiang]), and death (死苦 [si ku])—what constitutes their binding association? How can one abandon enemies (怨家 [yuan jia]), perversion (顛倒 [dian dao]), suffering (苦惱 [ku nao]), and sorrow (憂意 [you yi])?" Sentient beings in the world have endless self-grasping (我執 [wo zhi]). The power of great vows of compassion has no abandonment period. Disputes and coverings are fundamentally terrifying. Excellent sentient beings are insatiably greedy. The thirst of affliction (煩惱飢渴 [fan nao ji ke]) is extremely difficult to escape. When will the world truly be happy? Where is happiness in the stage of learning? Arising, accumulation, destruction, and perishing. Stinginess (慳 [qian]), greed (貪 [tan]), hunger (飢 [ji]), and thirst (渴 [ke]), poverty and illness are hard to abandon. Arrogance, deceit, and belittling others. Guiding equally to attain peace, vast merit, and harmonious relatives. Accumulating knowledge of what is used in this life, knowing that illusion has no little reality. Ancestors and clans continue to exist, and poverty and happiness are unequal. Auspicious ultimate truth purely arises, fundamentally fearless and without perversion. The power of pure awakening intensely arises. What is desired from the beginningless past? The perfect system increases to its limit, the fundamental power is fearless as suchness. Giving removes defilement, power is unbound, characteristics cease, hearing and retention are complete. Cultivating the fundamental practice with unperverted pure dwelling, truly carrying with tranquility and no agitation. The cloud of compassion universally covers, without arrogance. The power of binding is the limit of self-nature (自性 [zi xing]). The fundamental transformations are always such. Dullness, perversion, and the bondage of self-grasping (我執 [wo zhi]). Pure cultivation is free from perverted defilement. The vast city is rich and prosperous. Pure, excellent, and entirely free from disputes. The original practice benefits the world. Auspicious excellent deeds give rise to branches, and the fundamental characteristics cultivate transformative practice. The view of "I" and "mine" arises before and after. The defiled aspects of true liberation (正解脫義 [zheng jie tuo yi]) all cease. Existence and non-existence truly shift unstably. Based on self-grasping (我執 [wo zhi]), arrogance and other afflictions arise. Carrying endless true meaning and benefit (真實義利 [zhen shi yi li]), rushing to sacred places, offering food and drink. The powerful bondage is difficult to escape from the sea of suffering. If one enters the path of seeing (見道 [jian dao]), all discriminations are cut off. Cultivating clear practice, samsara (輪迴 [lun hui]) ceases. The five aggregates (五蘊 [wu yun]), name and form, are unconditioned, not this. Buddhahood is ultimate, all others are causal stages. Carrying to the complete unsurpassed awakening (無上覺位 [wu shang jue wei]). Good karma for a long time, three immeasurable kalpas (三無數劫 [san wu shu jie]). Tiny flaws must be removed, no good deed is left out. Fundamental cultivation is for a great being (大有情 [da you qing]). The nature of excellent merit is unbound. The true power is the fundamental excellent cause. Ceasing greed and hatred, the practice of humans (人 [ren]) and devas (天 [tian]). Diligently cultivating generosity, the cause of happiness. Upholding precepts without fault, its nature is vast. The power of characteristics increases without arrogance. Tranquil and unbound, defilements naturally disappear. Virtuous deeds are revered, all beings rely on them. Humans and devas universally cover like clouds. Purest, supremely tranquil, without dispute. The pure Dharma is not false, secretly accomplished. Following desires, aspiring for excellent fruits. Self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) knows true power. Life is unattainable, speaking of suchness. Nature is unattainable, not unattainable. Understanding the fundamental, loving tranquility. The pure excellent cause has no meaning of diminution. Existence is unattainable, speaking of what is imagined. Conditioned dharmas do not depend on time, existence is unattainable. When conditions meet, it is not unattainable. Noble people with vast merit are called great beings (大有情 [da you qing]). Cultivating combined poisons are perverted establishments. Truly cultivating causes to remove the dharma of arrogance (我慢法 [wo man fa]), relying on the power of good branches to advance freely, dwelling in peace and happiness, far from the defilements of afflictions, coarse and heavy various difficulties, and the perverted dharmas of the painful fruits of torrents. Ultimately, the sincere dharma increases. Following wisdom, understanding change. The fundamental non-dispute, various excellent deeds. The equal and changing dharmas of creation. Cultivating the actions of attachment. Cultivating the pure causal aspects of self-nature (自性 [zi xing]). The fundamental binding power is weak in all four directions. Generosity aids the poor and sick who come and go. That disaster, self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), is obtained due to stinginess (慳悋 [qian lin]). Fierce poisoning has no pure practice. Following the place, obtained by binding obstacles. The sixth consciousness (第六意識 [di liu yi shi]) truly investigates, able to cut off greed and various causal actions. Following those ten evil actions, ultimately cultivating and practicing equal dharmas. The eye faculty (眼根 [yan gen]) illuminates excellent actions. Cultivating merit and benefiting others. Associated with good dharmas, without the bondage of self-grasping (我執 [wo zhi]). Real practice cannot be covered. Knowing the true practice of suffering's accumulation (真實集諦之行 [zhen shi ji di zhi xing]). Giving rise to characteristics, covering defilements. The mind produces unrighteous actions. Perfect transformation of the self-nature Dharma-body (自性法體 [zi xing fa ti]). Past thoughts and past causal actions. Perverted actions, the faults of dispute. The fundamental defiled place of sentient beings. Generosity ultimately removes disasters. Such power is pure in nature. Walking calmly, excellent conduct. Such a pure system of places. The tranquil self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), the path of all dharmas. Vast meaning and benefit, understood by following. My view seeks the supreme place. The fundamental unity, pure causal actions. Unperverted transformation seeks the ultimate truth. The power of far-reaching, pure, and excellent causes and effects. The mind's division, fear, worry, and thought. Vast and complete Brahma-viharas (諸天梵行 [zhu tian fan xing]). Fear and destruction of sentient beings' bodies. Like clouds, universally covering and moistening the dry. Beautiful various dwelling places. Vast and equal practice of generosity. The suffering of sentient beings is removed. Obtaining true and excellent karmic retribution. Far from defilements and perverted resentments. Instructing and enhancing pure virtues. Excellent causes for sentient beings, pure cultivation. Cultivating generosity removes the obstacle of stinginess (慳悋 [qian lin]). Like clouds, it removes the heat and distress. Pure and true, far from perversion. Happiness is self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), the system is fearless. Excellent karmic retribution, excellent branches. Creation and aspiration, litigation ceases. Quiet dwelling cultivates tranquil characteristics. Violence does not arise, afflictions are abandoned. Ultimate creation, true limit. Greed and perversion, followed and ceased. Abandoning samsara (生死 [sheng si]), liberating from defilements. Changing characteristics cease in an instant. Knowing the causal places attracts endless. Perfect secret treasury, quiet and selfless. Seeking the limit, pure and unbound. Tranquil and undefiled, the mind and Dharma constantly cease. The meaning of self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), disputes cease. Various rare objects in the world. Covered and unknown, suddenly abandoned. Following self-grasping (我執 [wo zhi]), stinginess and no giving. Strong and difficult to untie bondage. After being wounded by suffering, a hundred things are unrecorded. Such tranquility, no dust arises. The master's pure wisdom knows. In a tranquil place, defilements cease. The characteristics of creation are originally true. Following knowledge, arrogance flourishes. Bondage arises, dust and defilements cover. The meaning of arrogance ceases. Wisdom and understanding follow, without perverted thoughts. Sentient beings' shadows cannot be abandoned. Good and evil retributions also follow. Such hearing and retention are the foundation of purity. Profound Dharma gives rise to pure generosity. Even with much wealth, no giving arises. The mind's stinginess and accumulation are difficult to abandon. Not giving out of compassion and reverence, the master has a share. Giving rise to true power of hearing and retention (聞持 [wen chi]). The actual cause of time, free and covered. Relatives have no time to interfere with benefits. Sentient beings give generously and love to give.

{4} Rescuing in Times of Emergency

[0381c18] 王者狀貌盡世希有,教令生靈本存其道,希世之物無意挂念,所謂隨順聽聞菩薩真實根本相狀。「世尊!病患、老相、死苦,何謂繫縛相應?怨家顛倒苦惱憂意,云何捨離?」世間有情我執無盡,大悲願力無有捨期,諍訟纏蓋根本驚畏,善哉生類妉婪無捨,煩惱飢渴苦極難免,世間真實何時快樂?學地遷移安樂何在?生起積聚毀壞滅亡,慳、貪、飢、渴貧病難捨,我慢欺輕[夌*欠]鑠彼物,平等導引俱登安處,廣大福德親族和合。積聚了知本生所用,虛幻了知無有少實,宗祖族類相繼而有,貧病安樂二事無等。吉祥勝義圓淨生起,無倒善淨根本無畏,淨覺之功熾然發起,無始本有何所希求。圓滿制度邊際增上,力用根本如如無怖,布施除染力用無縛,相貌止息聞持具足。無倒淨住修根本行,寂靜無喧真實運載,慈雲普覆我慢無有,繫縛力用自性邊際。根本遷變彼彼如如,暗鈍顛倒我執纏縛,清淨修崇無顛倒染,廣大城邑豐物熾盛。淨妙殊勝全無諍訟,本行施行世間資益,吉祥勝事發生支分,相貌根本修遷變行。我我所見前後發生,正解脫義染分皆止,有無真實移轉不定,我執為本慢等方生。運載真實義利無盡,奔詣聖所餚饍供養,纏縛有力苦海難出,若入見道分別皆斷。修明了行輪迴止息,五蘊名色無為非此,佛果究竟餘皆因分,運載圓滿無上覺位。善業長時三無數劫,纖瑕必去片善無遺,根本進修是大有情,福德殊勝體性無縛。真實力用根本勝因,止息貪瞋人天之行,勤修布施福樂之因,戒行無虧其體尊大。相貌力用增上無慢,安靜無縛塵污自殄,德業尊崇群生依附,人天趣類如雲普覆。清淨最上寂然無諍,淨法不虛祕密成就,隨順貪欲希求勝果。自性了知力用真實,生不可得約如性說,性不可得無不可得,了解根本愛樂寂靜,清淨勝因無損減義,有不可得約遍計說。有為之法不仗緣時有不可得,遇緣合時無不可得,尊貴之人福德廣大名大有情,修合毒藥顛倒施設,真實修因除我慢法,仗善支力自在進修,靜住安樂,遠離煩惱垢染麁重種種難事、瀑流苦果顛倒之法。究竟增上誠諦之法,隨順智解了知變動,無諍根本種種勝事,造作平等遷動之法。貪愛進修相貌之行,修作自性清淨因相,根本縛力四方衰患,布施濟給往來貧病。彼災自性因慳悋得,熾然毒害無清淨行,隨順處所縛障所得,第六意識真實推尋,能斷貪欲種種因行。順從彼彼十種惡行,究竟修崇施行等法,眼根照了殊妙作業,福德進修益濟等事。善法相應無我執縛,如實之行覆障不能,了知真實集諦之行,發生相貌纏蓋染障。意地造作不如法行,圓滿遷變自性法體,過去想念所作因行,作法顛倒諍訟過患。有情根本垢染處所,布施究竟除免災禍,如是力用界性清淨,行步安詳殊勝軌範。如是清淨處所制度,寂靜自性諸法道行,廣大義利隨順了知,我見推求最上處所。根本一合清淨因行,流轉無倒希求勝義,遠行力用淨妙因果,心分驚怖憂惱思慮。廣大圓滿諸天梵行,驚畏破壞有情身分,如雲遍覆潤澤乾枯,嚴麗種種安居處所。廣大平等修行布施,楚毒有情苦惱息除,獲得真實殊妙果報,遠離障染顛倒怨結。教導增上淨妙功德,有情勝因清淨修作,修布施行除慳悋障,如雲相狀息除熱惱。淨妙真實顛倒遠離,快樂自性制度無畏,增上果報支分殊妙,造作希求誦訟止息,靜住修飾相貌安泰,卒暴不生煩惱捨離,造作究竟邊際真實,貪欲顛倒隨順止息,棄背生死解脫染障,遷變相狀剎那皆盡。了知因處招感無盡,圓滿祕藏安靜無我,邊際趣求清淨無縛,寂靜無染意法常止。自性義利喧諍息除,世間種種希世之物,隱覆不知忽然所棄,順從我執悋惜無與。增上纏縛堅固難解,楚毒既傷百事無記,如是寂靜塵坌不生,主者清淨智慧了知。寂靜之處垢染止息,造作相貌本自真實,隨順知見憍恣轉盛,繫縛發生塵勞遮翳。我慢之意勝義止息,慧解相從無顛倒想,有情彼影無能捨離,善惡之報相隨亦然。如是聞持清淨之本,甚深之法發生淨施,財賄雖多不生惠施,意地慳貪積聚難捨。悲敬不施主者有分,生起真實聞持力用,時分實因自在纏蓋,親族無時干煩資益,有情布施愛樂惠捨。

[0382c14] How to cultivate causes and help in times of urgency? When sorrow is experienced, the mind is difficult to pacify. The fruit of retribution obtains the former causal deeds. Knowing good and evil, the shadow is not false. How can agitation cease in this place? At the limit of calamity, there is no hearing. That enhancing cause, poverty and illness, ceases. How can there be faults in tranquil sincerity? Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) draw near, speaking to teach and instruct. Such thirst will ultimately not exist.

{5} The Nature of Non-Dispute

[0382c14] 云何修因急時相濟?憂受之時心地難安,受報之果獲前因事,了知善惡影響不虛。是處云何喧煩止息?患難邊際聽聞無有,彼增上因貧病止息,寂靜誠實何有過患,菩薩接引埀言誨示,如此渴乏究竟不有。

[0382c19] How is the self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) not fond of disputes? The meaning of equality universally applies to both self and others. This place is indestructible, without the meaning of transformation. The ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]) is fundamental without inverted Brahma-viharas (梵行 [fan xing]). The fundamental excellent cause is fearless as suchness. Wisdom is not constant, the three natures (三性 [san xing]) are uncertain. The arising of dependent origination is fundamentally due to greed (貪愛 [tan ai]). In such a dark night, black and white are difficult to distinguish. The power of good purity is clearly manifest. Far from fear, unperverted purity. The nature is free from fear, the limit of ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]). Friends are like a forest, inseparable. The power of afflictions and disputes cannot be stopped. Ceasing to create karma and cultivating excellent practice. The limit of ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]) is fundamentally thus. Fundamental giving without transformative action. The pure cause of non-arising is difficult to obtain. The dharma of thought (想念之法 [xiang nian zhi fa]) is true affliction. The arising of causal dharma ultimately ceases and obstacles are removed. The nature of consciousness follows the pure teaching Dharma (教法 [jiao fa]). Wisdom knows the self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) of power. Transformation is fundamental, with generosity as the foremost. The mind's practice is guided by compassion, excellent self-nature (自性 [zi xing]). Pure karmic action, the power of freedom, that is, true power. Suchness does not arise, cultivate good actions. Affliction and bondage, thinking of good karma. Excellent retribution, holy teachings. Knowledge and understanding, both excellent practices. Thinking of holy Dharma (聖法 [sheng fa]), pure actions. True existence, the dharma of bondage (繫縛之法 [xi fu zhi fa]). Evil karma truly exists, ugly fruits are not absent. How can one abandon thoughts of holy teachings? Pure and true, going to places where it is not absent. Places do not arise, only then can true principle be manifest. Unmoving like a mountain, pure characteristics. When the painful fruit arises, manas (末那 [mo na]) arises with it. Following what is relied upon, there is the meaning of mutual interaction. The defiled nature of torrents is with the sixth consciousness (第六俱 [di liu ju]). Arising sequentially, there is general and specific retribution. Seeking the original cause, creating without tranquility. The ten good deeds (十善 [shi shan]) mutually support to become a hundred. Cultivating generosity for a long time, across distant kalpas. Pure and powerful, far from defilement and bondage. Original creation does not arise without cause. Wherever it is, it is such, truly enhancing. The body is pure and excellent, memory is distant. As if seeing tranquility, thoughts never cease. Free cessation, pure dhyana (禪那 [chan na]). Practicing generosity, the mind is equal to great beings (大有情類 [da you qing lei]). Cultivating original self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), excellent power. Characteristics rely on increasing freedom. Perfect ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]), fearless peace. The place is undiminished, perverted arising. Without time division, generosity is cultivated. Excellent power, pure self-nature (自性 [zi xing]). [0384a25] Why is it not suitable to construct dwellings? Imperfect retribution is caused by poverty. Unstable transformation, falling into traps. Diligently seeking virtue, happiness follows. Undamaged parts, body as before. Accomplishing retribution, merit is not wasted. Here, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) teaches tranquility. True freedom, self-nature (體性 [ti xing]) without seeking. The master is fearless, supreme and endless. Indestructible self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) arises powerfully. The practice of dana (檀那 [tan na]) is fulfilled in its function. All such practices are Bodhi practices (菩提行 [pu ti xing]). The original non-cultivation, Brahma-viharas (梵行 [fan xing]) dwell. Bondage, disaster, clear contemplation and peace. Seeking the supreme, advancing to great fruits. Powerful and zealous mind is thus. Far from the limit of defilement, perfectly obtained. Virtuous practice is unperverted, coverings are removed. Losing fundamental generosity, only practicing branches. Holy ones teach, matters are not in vain. Defiled actions, afflictions cover. Defilement and change are both unobtainable. The practice of a man, excellent lineage. Unmoving, constantly tranquil, nothing to say. Indestructible treasures, the mind always guards. No function at all, no transformative nature. Wisdom understands the nature of suchness (如如之性 [ru ru zhi xing]). Karmic retribution, influences are thus. Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) compassionately speaks exhaustively. Discrimination truly guides thus. Pure power, defilement is endless. A place of happiness, incomparable. That giving self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]) is pure. Accomplishing repentance, pure as heaven. The defilement of ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]) is beyond verbal expression. It cannot be said to have fundamental excellent function. Nor can it be said to be my self-nature (自性 [zi xing]). The original arising, constant meaning has true meaning. Its creation has following actions. My view seeks perverted actions. The defiled view of torrents, innate discrimination. Speech is tranquil, bearing sincerity. This is the meaning of sentient beings, practicing pure generosity. Carrying many meanings of transcending samsara (生死 [sheng si]). Excellent practice of giving, removing poverty and suffering. The power of secrets is beyond words. Its love, enhancing words. Tranquil places, endless longing. Excellent generosity, universal mind. The body is unperverted, the place is pure. Ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]) is unbound, holy power is fearless. This matter is undefiled, this nature is pure. The dharma of change (遷變之法 [qian bian zhi fa]), the power of hearing and retention (聞持 [wen chi]). Diminishing self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), no equal practice. Defilement is exhaustible, precepts can remove it. The practice among devas (天中之行 [tian zhong zhi xing]) must be true and noble. The retribution of evil paths is not false. Good and evil karma are equal in power.

{12} The Practice of Patience

[0384a25] 云何修造舍宇不堪?果報不精貧乏所感,流轉不堅遷移陷墜,勤求德行快樂從順,不壞支分身體如故。成就果報福德無廢,是處菩薩教誨安靜,真實自在體性無求,主者無畏最勝無盡。不壞自性有力發生,修檀那行功用滿足,如是一切行菩提行,無修之本梵行止住。纏縛禍難澄慮安止,趣求上妙進修大果,有力興心精進如是,離染邊際圓滿獲得。德行無倒纏蓋遠離,觀示相狀勤修勝力,時分顛倒全虧道行,愛樂誠諦盡不虛設。有無言說實大法雨,究竟最上盡遠離法,勝善無諍隨順所求,虧根本施唯行支分。聖人垂教事不虛設,塵污之行煩惱纏蓋,垢染遷變俱不可得,丈夫之行種族殊勝。不動常寂一無言說,不壞珍寶心常守護,全無作用無流轉性,智解了知如如之性。業報修感影響如是,菩薩慈悲曲盡所言,分別真實引導如此,清淨力用垢染無已。快樂之處無以比譬,彼施自性勝義清淨,成就懺悔如天無穢,勝義垢染離言說相。不可說有根本勝用,亦不可說我之自性,本生常義有真實義,彼之造作有隨順行。我見推求為顛倒行,瀑流染見俱生分別,語言寂靜荷負誠實,是有情義行清淨施。運載多種越生死義,善哉行施除貧苦義,祕密之功言不可及,彼之愛樂增上言說。寂靜處所希戀無已,殊勝布施用心普均,身分無倒處所鮮潔,勝義無縛聖力無畏。是事無垢此性清淨,遷變之法聞持力用,損減自性無平等行,垢染有盡戒德可除。天中之行須貴真實,惡趣之報亦並不虛,善不善業功力齊等。

{14} The Nature of Time

The Dharma-kaya (法報化身 [fa bao hua shen]), retribution-body (報身 [bao shen]), and transformation-body (化身 [hua shen]) are fully endowed with hearing and retention (聞持 [wen chi]). The fundamental power is pure Dharma. The ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]) is the fruit of Sravakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]). Fixed nature without remainder, body reduced to ashes, wisdom extinguished. Those with a nature that turns back enter a transformed body. Following the Mahayana (大乘 [da cheng]) directly until Buddhahood, the Buddha-Dharma (佛法 [fu fa]) and Brahma-viharas (梵行 [fan xing]) are perfectly carried. This great being (大有情 [da you qing]) benefits both self and others. The body of sentient beings possesses all Buddha-seeds (佛種 [fu zhong]). With obstacles or without obstacles, ordinary or holy, this one self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) exists constantly throughout kalpas. Pure self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) gives rise to the meaning of liberation. Nature is originally enhanced, characteristics and power. Silent and formless, the mind is clear and unmoving. Enemies from the past appear now. Suddenly difficult to avoid, cultivating extremely excellent good. Repaying past transgressions, the weight of sin and merit. Enemies are naturally avoided, parts of sentient beings. Knowing self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), ceasing afflictions, entirely relying on holy practice. Creating poisons, initiating disputes. Originally existing parts, enhancing words. Power is free, but unattainable. True suchness (如如 [ru ru]) has no meaning of creation. Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) practice giving without thinking of its reward. Unperverted characteristics, equal practice. Fundamental tranquility, excellent cultivation. Wherever bondage is, there are agitation and disputes. Free time, peaceful places. Fundamental characteristics, excellent movement. Seeking tranquility, creating secluded places. Those truths are without suffering. True disputes, fundamental dullness. Thus, without perversion, increasing meritorious causes. Everywhere there is cessation, practice of giving spreads. In every life, pure causes correspond. Accomplishing equality, knowing cessation. Supreme practice of giving, not accompanied by greed. Suffering changes, wisdom increases. Loving self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), tranquil cessation. The place of giving, karmic retribution is not false. Self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) is selfless, knowing it as meaning. Pure sincerity is ultimately like emptiness. Samadhi (禪定 [chan ding]) is tranquil, no suffering arises. Unmoving name and form, knowing self-nature (自性 [zi xing]). Supreme love seeks excellent karma. {15} The Noble Nature

As a cause, it is knowable and truly understood. The supreme nature (上妙體性 [shang miao ti xing]), excellent person. Advance and retreat are always stable, flourishing with light. Equal application, fundamental practice. Giving rise to the ten precepts (十種戒 [shi zhong jie]), patience, and other practices. True creation, tranquil mental joy. There is no quiet dwelling and giving with perverted defilement. Non-arising and the meaning of ceasing characteristics. The body's characteristics follow, and their nature can be attained. Unchanging practice, tranquil and reliable. Existence and non-existence, both are free from transformation. True words and practices are far from thought. The virtue of upholding precepts is a great cause. The power of dhyana (禪定 [chan ding]) is the path to holiness. Equal correspondence, actions are far removed. Bondage is also removed. Here, Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) are praised and enhanced. Carrying excellence, knowing pure practice. Fundamental limits are both unobtainable. Wisdom knows their true actions. Those who see are never tired of cultivating Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) practice. The loving mother's actions are free in their characteristics. Generosity is like emptiness, fundamentally tranquil. Sincerity is thus. When disaster arises, there is power to cure it. Individually true, pure, and agreeable. Cultivating wisdom, true liberation. Here, the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) suffering is truly gone. Incomparable analogy, exhausting defilements. The five aggregates (五蘊 [wu yun]) are bound, cultivating pure practice. Thus, name and form, all five aggregates (五蘊 [wu yun]) are included. The defilements of torrents are all obstacles of affliction. Cultivating tranquil practice, self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) arises. Here, carrying enhanced generosity. Its creative nature, the system is profound. Giving rise to wisdom, enhancing aspiration. Unperverted, ultimate, bound by defilement. Heavenly realms are tranquil, creation is true. Pure, undefiled, fundamental power. Self-grasping (我執 [wo zhi]), intellectual confusion, dullness, greed, ignorance. Diligently seeking freedom, bondage is endless. Powerful characteristics, aspiring to generosity. Excellent retribution, giving rise to ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]). Characteristics cease, place is pure. True excellent cause, that meaning of hearing and retention (聞持 [wen chi]). Here, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) has no dull karma. Following samsara (生死 [sheng si]), guiding all beings. Heavenly sentient beings, the meaning of unperverted causes. Cultivating holy practice, honoring the ten good deeds (十善業 [shi shan ye]). Formless movement, seeking harmony. Excellent practice, without transformative action. Tranquil and undiminished, excellent arising. That self-grasping (彼我執相 [bi wo zhi xiang]) is supremely free. Perverted truth, the nature of covering. Suchness, holy nature, inherently accords with original wisdom (本智 [ben zhi]). Subsequent arising according to conditions, only then is the reflection obtained. Causal and fruit stages are different, relatives and non-relatives are equal. The completeness of Dharma-nature (法性 [fa xing]) is thus from beginning to end. When covered, it is called the storehouse (藏 [cang]); when liberated, it is the Dharma-kaya (法身 [fa shen]). Cultivating the limit, diligently seeking the Dharma-body. Following cessation, repeatedly removing. Giving rise to meaning and benefit, fearless practice. Initiating creation, original characteristics. Discriminative generosity does not require a supreme mind. Formless field of merit, truly excellent. The nature of generosity can destroy characteristics. The original non-nature has no seeking. Purest, supremely excellent, far from greed. The limit of path of practice (道行 [dao xing]), auspicious and excellent. That seeking suchness (如性 [ru xing]) is unknowable. Entering the true gate, neither possible nor impossible. The self-nature (自性 [zi xing]) of speech relies on names, phrases, and characters. Names, phrases, and characters are illusory, verbal explanations are substantial. Fundamental non-arising, hearing and retention (聞持 [wen chi]) nourish. Here, it is indestructible, peaceful and constantly tranquil. Devas (天 [tian]) and humans are pure, also without fear. Excellent, not false, enhancing self-nature (自性 [zi xing]). Supreme, unperverted, true cessation. Perfect characteristics, pure nature without dispute. Generosity is powerful, the foundation of merit. The cause of the loving mother, lineage is supreme. Seeking tranquility, afflictions do not arise. Both respectfully honor each other and are excellent. Their karmic connections in the heavenly realms are due to merit. Excellent self-nature (自性 [zi xing]), unperverted enhancement. The arising of true characteristics, knowing the nature of aggregates. The transformation ceases, giving rise to ultimate truth (勝義 [sheng yi]). Thus, repenting, exhausting all faults. Many afflictions, confusing principle and matter. Knowing sharpness and dullness, their classes are unequal. Such roots, follows, and innate discriminations. Where to cut off is explained in other treatises. The order of dharmas seeks excellent power. Virtuous cultivation, true perfection. Such virtuous cultivation is fundamental. Extremely profound, called fundamental practice (根本行 [gen ben xing]). The Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) practice is the thirty-fourth chapter (第三十四 [di san shi si]) of the Honored One's (莊嚴尊者 [zhuang yan zun zhe]) "Protection of the Nation" (護國 [hu guo]) original life story (本生之義 [ben sheng zhi yi]). This is the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) cultivation of excellent practice.

[0385a12] 云何本性位極尊崇?始生即具餘法不類,體有勝劣彼有實性,為因可得真實了知。上妙體性殊勝之人,進退常定增盛光明,平等所用根本施行,發生十種戒忍等行。真實造作寂靜意樂,無靜住施有倒染行,生不可得止相貌義,身相隨順界性可得。無變動行寂靜可依,有無不可遷變俱離,真言行相思議遠隔,持戒功德尊大之因,禪定之力入聖之道,平等相應作業遠離,繫縛亦除。是處菩薩稱讚增上,運載殊勝了知淨行,根本邊際俱不可得,智慧了知彼實行相。福德所在力用遷變,勝義力用天帝之功,是處平等影像修作,自性福祿增上趣向。梵行清淨意地之本,究竟增上圓滿無倒,布施之心發生勝義,相狀淨妙舉世希有。見者無厭修菩薩行,慈母施為相貌自在,布施如空根本寂靜,誠諦如是。災禍發生有力能治,別別真實清淨可意,修習智慧真正解脫,是處菩薩苦已真實。譬喻無及盡煩惱染,五蘊繫縛修清淨行,如是名色五蘊皆攝,瀑流染諍盡煩惱障。修寂靜行自性發生,是處運載增上布施,彼造作性制度甚深,發生智慧增上趣求。無倒本盡縛染時分,天趣寂靜造作真實,淨妙無垢根本力用。我執利惑鈍染貪癡,勤求自在繫縛難盡,有力相貌希求布施,果報增上出生勝義。相狀止寂處所清淨,真實勝因彼聞持義,是處菩薩無暗鈍業,隨順生死誘接群類。天趣有情無倒因義,造作聖行崇十善業,無相運動求和合義,勝妙修行無流轉行。寂靜無減殊勝發生,彼我執相自在殊勝,顛倒真實纏蓋自性,如如聖性本智冥合。後得緣如變影方得,因果位異親非親等,法性圓滿始末如此,在纏名藏出纏法身。造作邊際精求法體,隨順止息重復遠離,發生義利施行無畏,發起造作本來相貌。分別布施不須勝心,無相福田真實殊勝,布施本性能破壞相,無性之本自無希求。清淨最勝貪欲遠離,道行邊際吉祥勝妙,彼求如性了不可得,推入真門無可亦無不可。言說自性依名句文,名句文假言詮安實,根本不生聞持長養,是處無壞安靜常寂。天人清淨亦無驚畏,善哉不虛增上自性,最上無倒止息真實,圓滿相貌淨性無諍。布施有力福德之本,慈母之因族望為上,希求寂靜煩惱不生,彼此恭奉更相殊勝。彼天趣中福德因緣,善哉自性增上無倒,實相生起了知蘊性,遷變相盡發生勝義。如是懺謝盡其過患,多種煩惱迷理迷事,了知利鈍品數無等,如是根隨分別俱生。斷時所在如別論說,法數次第趣求勝力,賢善修作真實圓滿,如是賢善修習根本,祕密甚深名根本行。菩薩施行莊嚴尊者護國本生之義第三十四。是謂菩薩修行勝行。
