[0338b14] In the past, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), due to the cause of anger, fell into the realm of Nāgas (龍中 [long zhong]). He possessed three kinds of poisons: qi poison (氣毒 [qi du]), eye poison (眼毒 [yan du]), and touch poison (觸毒 [chu du]). Furthermore, due to the power of his past meritorious karma, his body was adorned with various colors, like a collection of seven jewels, not requiring the illumination of the sun or moon. He was constantly surrounded by immeasurable hundreds of thousands of Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]) as his retinue. He could transform into a human form, with an upright and handsome appearance, residing in a secluded place on Mount Vidha (毘陀山 [pi tuo shan]), where many forests, flowers, and fruits flourished, and clear, delightful ponds abounded. He enjoyed himself with the Nāga (龍 [long]) maidens, engaging in various songs and dances, and remained there for immeasurable hundreds of thousands of years.

[0338b21] At that time, a Garuda King (金翅鳥王 [jin chi niao wang]) flew down from the sky, intending to prey on the Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]). As he approached, he stirred up winds with his beating wings, crushing mountains and shattering rocks, causing rivers and streams to dry up. The Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]) and Nāga (龍 [long]) maidens, seeing this, were greatly terrified. Their necklaces and ornaments, adorning their bodies, trembled unstably and all fell to the ground. They all exclaimed, "This great enemy, with a beak like vajra, smashes everything it touches! He is coming to devour us, what shall we do?"

[0338b27] At that moment, the Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]), hearing this, became extremely distressed. However, due to the power of his past good deeds, he reflected further: "My mind is fearless, yet this Garuda (金翅 [jin chi]) possesses great power. Only I can resist him." He said to the Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]), "You should just follow behind me; you will surely not be harmed. If I cannot protect you and my dependents, what use is this great body?"
[0338b27] shì shí lóng wáng chū wén cǐ shuō jí shēng yōu nǎo, yóu sù shàn lì fù gèng sī wéi: “xīn nǎi wú wèi, rán cǐ jīn chì jù dà wēi lì, wéi wǒ yī shēn kě néng yù bǐ.” wèi zhū lóng yuē: “rǔ děng dàn dāng cóng wú zhī hòu, bì wú suǒ hài. ruò wǒ bù néng yǔ qí péng shǔ zuò shǒu hù zhě, hé yòng rú shì dà shēn zhī wèi?”
[0338b27] shi shi long wang chu wen ci shuo ji sheng you nao, you su shan li fu geng si wei: "xin nai wu wei, ran ci jin chi ju da wei li, wei wo yi shen ke neng yu bi." wei zhu long yue: "ru deng dan dang cong wu zhi hou, bi wu suo hai. ruo wo bu neng yu qi peng shu zuo shou hu zhe, he yong ru shi da shen zhi wei?"
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
[0338c02] Then, the Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]) approached the Garuda (金翅 [jin chi]) without any fear and said to him, "Please pay a little attention, let us discuss this matter. You constantly bear enmity towards me, but I have no such thought towards you. Due to past evil karma, I have acquired this large body. Although I possess three kinds of qi (氣 [qi]), eye (眼 [yan]), and touch poisons (觸毒 [chu du]), I have never intentionally harmed others. I am capable of resisting you, or I can go far away so you cannot see me. The reason I am not leaving now is that many Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]) depend on me. Therefore, I do not wish to engage in battle with you. That is why I bear no resentment towards you."
[0338c02] ěr shí lóng wáng yì jīn chì suǒ, xīn wú qiè ruò ér bái bǐ yán: “xìng shǎo liú shén gòng yì cǐ shì, rǔ yú wǒ shēn cháng shēng yuàn hài, wǒ yú rén zhě dōu wú cǐ niàn, yǐ sù è yè zhāo cǐ dà shēn, suī jù sān zhǒng qì,, yǎn,, chù dú, wèi cháng yú tā zàn xìng sǔn hài, dù jǐ zhī néng kě xiāng kàng dí, yì néng yuǎn qù lìng rǔ bù jiàn. wǒ jīn suǒ yǐ bù wěi qù zhě, duō yǒu zhū lóng yī fù yú wǒ, yóu cǐ bù yù liǎng xiāng jiāo zhàn, shì gù yú rǔ bù qǐ yuàn xīn.”

[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
[0338c09] The Garuda (金翅 [jin chi]) replied, "Do you truly bear no resentment towards me?"
[0338c09] jīn chì fù yán: “rǔ chéng yú wǒ wú yuàn xīn yé?”
[0338c09] jin chi fu yan: "ru cheng yu wo wu yuan xin ye?"
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
[0338c10] The Nāga (龍 [long]) said, "Although I am an animal, I understand karmic retribution well. I clearly know that even a small evil can lead to heavy consequences, like a shadow following a form, never leaving it. Both you and I have fallen into an evil realm now, all due to the sinful causes we created in past lives. You should recall what the Tathāgata (如來 [ru lai]) said: 'Enmity cannot be dispelled by enmity; only by cultivating compassion (慈 [ci]) and patience (忍 [ren]) can it be eliminated.' For example, if you throw dry fuel into a fire, it will burn even more fiercely without end. Retaliating anger with anger is just like that."
[0338c10] lóng yuē: “wǒ suī shòu shēn shàn dá yè bào, shěn zhī xiǎo è gǎn guǒ yóu zhòng, rú yǐng suí xíng bù xiāng lí yě; wǒ jí rǔ shēn jīn duò è dào, jiē yóu xiān shì zào zuò zuì yīn. rǔ dāng yì niàn rú lái suǒ shuō, fēi yǐ yuàn xīn néng jiě yuàn jié, wéi qǐ cí rěn kě shǐ xiāo chú, pì rú huǒ jù tóu zhī gān xīn, zhuǎn zēng chì rán wú yǒu qióng yǐ, yǐ chēn bào chēn lǐ yì rú cǐ.”
[0338c10] long yue: "wo sui shou shen shan da ye bao, shen zhi xiao e gan guo you zhong, ru ying sui xing bu xiang li ye; wo ji ru shen jin duo e dao, jie you xian shi zao zuo zui yin. ru dang yi nian ru lai suo shuo, fei yi yuan xin neng jie yuan jie, wei qi ci ren ke shi xiao chu, pi ru huo ju tou zhi gan xin, zhuan zeng chi ran wu you qiong yi, yi chen bao chen li yi ru ci."
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
[0338c15] At that time, the Garuda (金翅 [jin chi]), hearing this, immediately ceased his resentment, and good thoughts arose within him. He then said to the Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]), "You are able to extinguish my anger with the power of compassion (慈 [ci]) and patience (忍 [ren]), just as drawing water from a flowing spring extinguishes a blazing fire, causing my mind to instantly become cool and clear."
[0338c15] shì shí jīn chì wén shì shuō yǐ, yuàn xīn jí xī shàn xīn shēng yān. fù xiàng lóng wáng zuò rú shì shuō: “rǔ jīn néng yǐ cí rěn zhī lì xī wǒ chēn huì, rú jí liú quán miè qí yán huǒ, shǐ wǒ xīn de dùn dé qīng liáng.”
[0338c15] shi shi jin chi wen shi shuo yi, yuan xin ji xi shan xin sheng yan. fu xiang long wang zuo ru shi shuo: "ru jin neng yi ci ren zhi li xi wo chen hui, ru ji liu quan mie qi yan huo, shi wo xin de dun de qing liang."
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
[0338c18] The Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]) replied, "In countless past lives, when I was with you, I had received precepts from the Buddha (佛 [fu]). My mind was not pure and I did not uphold them firmly, seeking fame and harboring jealousy. Due to this cause, I fell into an evil realm. I confessed my faults then, which is why I can remember it. You have forgotten it all because you concealed yours. You should now recall your original right mindfulness and cultivate a mind of compassion (慈 [ci]) and patience (忍 [ren]) to purify your brahmacarya (梵行 [fan xing])."
[0338c18] lóng wáng fù yán: “wǒ xī yǔ rǔ wú liàng shì shí, xiān yú fú suǒ céng shòu jiè fǎ, xīn fēi qīng jìng fù bù jiān chí, wèi qiú míng wén ér xiāng zēng jí, yǐ shì yīn yuán duò yú è dào. wǒ céng fā lù gù néng yì chí, rǔ yóu fù cáng jīn jiē wàng shī, rǔ jīn yīng dāng yì běn zhèng niàn, fā cí rěn xīn jìng xiū fàn xíng.”

[0338c23] The Garuda (金翅 [jin chi]) replied, "From today onwards, I will grant all Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]) safety and fearlessness." He then left the Nāga Palace (龍宮 [long gong]) and returned to his original abode.
[0338c23] jīn chì fù yán: “wǒ cóng jīn rì pǔ shī zhū lóng ān yǐn wú wèi.” jí lí lóng gōng hái guī běn chù.

[0338c24] The Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]) then comforted his Nāga (龍 [long]) retinue and asked them, "Did you feel afraid when you saw the Garuda (金翅 [jin chi])?" They all replied, "Extremely terrified."
[0338c24] lóng wáng nǎi wèi zhū lóng juàn shǔ, fù wèn zhī yuē: “rǔ jiàn jīn chì shēng kǒng bù bù?” gè zuò shì yán: “jí dà bù jù.”

[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
[0338c26] The Nāga (龍 [long]) said, "If living beings in the world saw you, they would also be extremely terrified. You Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]) cherish your lives just like all other living beings. You should observe your own bodies and compare them to others' bodies. Therefore, you should cultivate a mind of great compassion (大慈 [da ci]). Because I practiced compassion (慈心 [ci xin]), my enemy returned to his original abode. All sentient beings, transmigrating through saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]), have no reliance greater than the mind of compassion (慈心 [ci xin]). The mind of great compassion (大慈心 [da ci xin]) is like good medicine, capable of curing the serious illnesses of sentient beings' afflictions. The mind of great compassion (大慈心 [da ci xin]) is like a bright lamp, capable of dispelling the darkness of the three poisons of sentient beings. The mind of great compassion (大慈心 [da ci xin]) is like a boat, capable of ferrying sentient beings across the bitter ocean of the three realms. The mind of great compassion (大慈心 [da ci xin]) is like a companion, capable of traversing the dangerous and difficult paths of saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]). The mind of great compassion (大慈心 [da ci xin]) is like a mani (摩尼 [mo ni]) jewel, capable of fulfilling all good wishes of sentient beings. Due to my past lack of compassion (慈心 [ci xin]), I fell into this Nāga (龍 [long]) realm and could not be liberated. If sentient beings establish the gate of compassion (慈門 [ci men]), they can generate immeasurable good dharmas, blocking all ignorance and darkness. All afflictions will not be able to enter, and they will constantly be reborn in the realms of humans and heavens, attaining liberation and joy." Hearing this, all the Nāga (龍 [long]) dependents dispelled their anger and cultivated compassion (慈心 [ci xin]).
[0338c26] lóng yuē: “shì jiān zhòng shēng ruò jiàn rǔ zhě, shēng dà kǒng bù yì rú cǐ yě. ěr děng zhū lóng ài xī shēn mìng, yǔ zhū zhòng shēng děng wú yǒu yì, dāng guān zì shēn yǐ kuàng tā shēn, shì gù yīng qǐ dà cí zhī xīn, yóu wǒ xiū xí cí xīn yīn yuán, shǐ qí yuàn duì hái guī běn chù. yī qiè yǒu qíng liú zhuǎn shēng sǐ, suǒ kě yī hù wú yuè cí xīn. dà cí xīn zhě yóu rú liáng yào, néng yù zhòng shēng fán nǎo zhòng bìng; dà cí xīn zhě yóu rú míng dēng, néng pò zhòng shēng sān dú hēi àn; dà cí xīn zhě yóu rú chuán fá, néng dù zhòng shēng sān yǒu kǔ hǎi; dà cí xīn zhě yóu rú bàn lǚ, néng yuè shēng sǐ xiǎn nán è dào; dà cí xīn zhě rú mó ní zhū, néng mǎn zhòng shēng suǒ qiú shàn yuàn. wǒ yóu wǎng xī shī cí xīn gù, duò cǐ lóng zhōng bù dé jiě tuō. ruò zhū zhòng shēng jiàn lì cí mén, zé néng chū shēng wú liàng shàn fǎ, bì sāi yī qiè yú chī hūn àn, zhū fán nǎo yuán ér bù néng rù, cháng shēng rén tiān jiě tuō ān lè.” zhū lóng juàn shǔ wén shì shuō yǐ, xī chú chēn huì jiē qǐ cí xīn.

[0339a11] At that time, the Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]), seeing his own kind transformed by him, rejoiced, saying, "Excellent! What I set out to do is accomplished. I have enabled you to eradicate immeasurable evil poisons, replacing them with pure good Dharma (善淨法 [shan jing fa]). Furthermore, I have established for you the pure eight precepts of fasting (八戒齋法 [ba jie zhai fa]); you should uphold them. Sentient beings in Jambudvīpa (閻浮眾生 [yan fu zhong sheng]) can wash their bodies and minds with the water of the eight precepts (八戒水 [ba jie shui]) to attain purity, eliminating immeasurable defilements of greed, anger, and ignorance, and thereby create provisions for the path to the human and heavenly realms. If one can uphold these eight precepts of fasting (八戒齋法 [ba jie zhai fa]), one should know that even if they have no beautiful clothes, they are already adorned with the garment of shame and conscientiousness. One should know that even if they have no walls, they can resist the enemies of the six senses. One should know that even if they are not of a noble family, they are already dwelling among the noble lineage. One should know that even if they have no ornaments, they possess all good qualities to adorn their body. One should know that even if they have no treasures, they have gathered the seven kinds of Dharma wealth (七種法財 [qi zhong fa cai]) of humans and heavens. They do not rely on bridges to cross dangerous paths. Such are the merits of receiving the eight precepts (八戒 [ba jie])." At that time, the Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]) all said, "We now wish to hear the names of the eight precepts (八戒 [ba jie]); we will respectfully receive and diligently practice them."

[0339b05] At that time, the Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]), accompanied by his followers, went to a remote and tranquil mountain forest. He stayed away from greed and anger, constantly cultivating compassion (慈 [ci]) and patience (忍 [ren]) to cultivate himself. He upheld the fasting precepts (齋法 [zhai fa]) for many days, his body growing weak and weary from limited food. Some wicked people arrived at his dwelling. The Nāga (龍 [long]) heard human voices and immediately became aware. These wicked people, seeing this sight, were greatly astonished and exclaimed, "What kind of treasure is this, gushing forth from the ground?" The Nāga (龍 [long]) thought to himself, "If I let these people see my true form, they will be frightened to death, which would ruin my practice of upholding the precepts. These people have come here now, they must be coveting my body and intending to take my life."

[0339b12] At that time, the wicked people said to each other, "We have been in the mountains for many years and have never seen such a form. Its various colors are dazzling and radiant to the eye. If we get this skin, we will present it to the king (王者 [wang zhe]) and surely receive a great reward. How wonderful that would be!" They immediately took sharp knives and began to peel and extract it.

[0339b15] At that moment, the Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]), by the power of compassion (慈忍 [ci ren]), harbored no resentment nor pain. He immediately conceived a thought of acceptance towards these people, and the three poisons vanished. He comforted himself, "I should not be stingy. If an enemy suddenly appears, I cannot escape. These people are now killing me for the reward of my body; I would rather die myself than harm them in return, lest these people suffer in this life." At that time, the wicked people, with vigorous effort, held their sharp knives and peeled and departed. The Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]) then thought to himself, "If a person is innocent and is dismembered by others, enduring it without retaliation and without resentment, one should know that this person is a true gentleman (正士 [zheng shi]). If one can silently endure abuse from parents, siblings, or spouse, this is not particularly noble. But if one does not retaliate against an enemy and silently endures it, this is truly difficult. However, I am now doing this for the benefit of others, so I should silently endure it. Since beginningless saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]), I have discarded countless lives in vain, yet I have never specifically given to one person. I vow that in future lives, I will bestow immeasurable Dharma wealth (法財 [fa cai]) upon these people to fulfill their wishes."

[0339b28] At that time, after the Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]) was peeled, his whole body bled and the pain was unbearable. His entire body trembled uncontrollably. Furthermore, immeasurable hundreds of thousands of small insects, hearing of his blood, came to suck and eat it. The Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]) then said, "May these small insects who eat my flesh receive the Dharma food (法食 [fa shi]) in future lives." At that time, the Nāga King (龍王 [long wang]) endured severe pain, and the Nāgas (諸龍 [zhu long]) who saw it were all filled with sorrow. The King then vowed, "If I attain Buddhahood in the future, may my skin instantly be restored to its original state." Having made this vow, he spontaneously recovered. His Nāga (龍 [long]) dependents were greatly rejoiced. This is how the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), even in an evil realm, maintained the power of compassion (慈忍 [ci ren]) and firmly upheld pure precepts.

At noon, the Venerable Ānanda (阿難陀 [a nan tuo]), having finished his meal and put away his bowl, went with the bhikkhus (諸比丘 [zhu bi qiu]) to a forest. As they walked, meditated, and rested, they discussed among themselves, "It is truly extraordinary and exceedingly rare that the Buddha World Honored One (佛世尊 [fu shi zun]) has appeared in the world now, greatly benefiting all living beings. These five great bhikkhus (五大比丘 [wu da bi qiu]), headed by Kaundinya (憍陳如 [jiao chen ru]), were the first to meet the Buddha (佛 [fu]) after he attained perfect enlightenment, went to Deer Park (鹿野苑 [lu ye yuan]) and preached the Four Noble Truths (四諦法 [si di fa]), and were the first to comprehend. What good roots did they plant? What was the cause? That they were able to awaken upon the first turning of the Dharma wheel (法輪 [fa lun]), and were the first to hear the Dharma drum (法鼓 [fa gu]) when it was first beaten? The Earth gods (地神 [de shen]) surged forth to inform the Sky gods (虛空神 [xu kong shen]), and all the devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) bore witness, saying that Kaundinya (憍陳如 [jiao chen ru]) had attained comprehension." Having thought this, he rose from his seat and respectfully informed the World Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) of all these matters.

[0339c23] The Buddha (佛 [fu]) told Ānanda (阿難 [a nan]), "Long ago, through immeasurable kalpas (阿僧祇劫 [a seng qi jie]), there was a king in this Jambudvīpa (閻浮提 [yan fu ti]) whose name was Ciliwang (慈力 [ci li]), the King of Compassionate Power (慈力 [ci li]). He had great renown, profound blessings and wisdom, an upright and handsome appearance, and unparalleled majesty. He ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms, with tens of thousands of queens and consorts, and twenty thousand ministers who governed the affairs of state together. This Ciliwang (慈力王 [ci li wang]) had long ago met previous Buddhas (先佛 [xian fu]) and planted various good roots. He delighted in practicing compassion (慈行 [ci xing]), benevolence (仁 [ren]), forgiveness (恕 [shu]), and peace (和平 [he ping]). He bestowed happiness upon all sentient beings. He also cultivated a compassionate mind, pitying the poor and destitute, and helping all suffering beings. He also cultivated a joyful mind, honoring the virtuous and always delighting them with kind words. He also cultivated a mind of equanimity, neither joyful nor resentful, without stinginess towards inner and outer possessions, treating all sentient beings as his only child. He practiced these four immeasurable states (四平等行 [si ping deng xing]) for many kalpas (劫 [jie]) without ever ceasing. He also guided his ministers and subjects with the ten good deeds (十善 [shi shan]), each of them diligently upholding purity. The country was peaceful and prosperous, and everyone rejoiced. There were plague ghosts (疫鬼 [yi gui]) and five Yakṣas (五夜叉 [wu ye cha]) who constantly devoured human blood and essence, harassing people. However, because everyone cultivated the ten good deeds (十善 [shi shan]), purifying their body, speech, and mind, all calamities disappeared. The devas (諸天善神 [zhu tian shan shen]) constantly protected them. Even if there were evil spirits or demons, though they harbored harmful intentions, they could not succeed.

[0340a09] "At that time, the five Yakṣas (五夜叉 [wu ye cha]) came to the King and all said, 'We, your followers, depend on human blood and essence to sustain our lives. Because the King has taught all the people to cultivate the ten good deeds (十善 [shi shan]), we can no longer obtain food from this source. We are suffering from hunger and thirst and have no means to survive. O great King, your compassionate virtue saves all those in distress, but you alone do not bestow your grace upon us.' The King, hearing this, was deeply saddened and thought to himself, 'These Yakṣas (夜叉 [ye cha]) only drink human blood. What method can I use to satisfy their needs? Perhaps by harming my own body, I can save them.' So he pricked himself in five places, and blood immediately gushed out. The five Yakṣas (五夜叉 [wu ye cha]) each brought a vessel to collect and drink the blood. They were satisfied and joyful. The King then said, 'I have saved your lives with my own blood. If you are satisfied, I have no other wish than that you cultivate the ten good deeds (十善 [shi shan]) as a repayment for my kindness. I vow that when I become a Buddha (佛 [fu]) in the future, I will first preach the Dharma (法 [fa]) to you, delivering you and eliminating your three poisons with the nectar of immortality (甘露味 [gan lu wei]), thus purifying your desires, hunger, and thirst.'"

They were the first to awaken, to end the boundary of suffering, and to become Arhats (阿羅漢 [a luo han]). At that time, the distinct names of the Buddha (佛 [fu]), Dharma (法 [fa]), and Saṃgha (僧 [seng]) treasures first appeared in the world."

[0340a28] The Buddha (佛 [fu]) was in Śrāvastī (舍衛國 [she wei guo]), in the Jetavana-Anathapiṇḍika-vihāra (祇陀林給孤獨精舍 [qi tuo lin gei gu du jing she]), with a large assembly of one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikkhus (大比丘眾 [da bi qiu zhong]). At that time, there was a merchant leader (商主 [shang zhu]) in the country who, with five hundred people, intended to sail a large ship into the great ocean to gather various precious jewels. This merchant leader (商主 [shang zhu]) developed pure faith and wished to offer food to the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and the Saṃgha (僧 [seng]) to pray for blessings and protection. He went before the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and sincerely and earnestly invited him; the Tathāgata (如來 [ru lai]), knowing this, silently consented. The next morning, at his residence, he prepared a meal, offering all kinds of delicious food with devotion. After the meal, seats were arranged, and the Buddha (佛 [fu]) preached the Dharma (法 [fa]), praising the act of giving (bushixing 布施行 [bu shi xing]), which resulted in fulfilling one's wishes and benefiting both the mind and the field of merit (xintian 心田 [xin tian]), where a small cause yields a great result. The merchant leader (商主 [shang zhu]), hearing the Dharma (法 [fa]), became enlightened, bowed, circumambulated clockwise, and stood to one side.

[0340b07] Then the World Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) said to the merchant leader (商主 [shang zhu]), "If you wish to enter the great ocean, where there are many dangers, you must take refuge in the Triple Gem (三寶 [san bao]) and uphold the five precepts (五戒 [wu jie]) to become a Upāsaka (優婆塞 [you po sai]). Then your wishes can be fulfilled, and you can return safely." The merchant leader (商主 [shang zhu]), hearing the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) teaching, diligently and respectfully requested to receive the five precepts (五戒 [wu jie]). The Buddha (佛 [fu]) told him to listen carefully and contemplate well: "What are the five? First, not killing living beings (bu shasheng 不殺生 [bu sha sheng]); second, not stealing (bu toutao 不偷盜 [bu tou dao]); third, not engaging in sexual misconduct (bu xietao 不邪欲 [bu xie yu]); fourth, not lying (bu wangyu 不妄語 [bu wang yu]); fifth, not drinking alcohol (bu yinjiu 不飲酒 [bu yin jiu]). These are called the five precepts (五戒 [wu jie]); you should uphold them for the rest of your life without violating them. This is to be a Upāsaka (優婆塞 [you po sai])."

[0340b13] Because the merchant leader (商主 [shang zhu]) had planted roots of virtue in past lives, he was intelligent and discerning, able to observe the signs of good and bad winds and waves. All the merchants invited him to be their guide, respecting him as a sage (賢者 [xian zhe]). So, he chose an auspicious day, gathered provisions and firewood, assembled the merchants, and together they entered the great ocean. After several days of travel, strong winds and waves arose. The sea god (海神 [hai shen]) transformed himself into a Yakṣa (夜叉 [ye cha]), whose appearance was ugly and whose body was green and black. Fire emanated from the tip of his sharp teeth, and he emerged from the waves, preventing the ship from moving. He asked the merchants, "Have you ever seen anything more terrifying in the world than me?" At that time, the sage (賢者 [xian zhe]), seeing his monstrous form, single-mindedly contemplated the Triple Gem (三寶 [san bao]). Through the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) blessing, his fear immediately vanished. He boldly replied, "I have indeed seen something even more evil, several times worse than you." The god (神 [shen]) asked, "Who is it?" The sage (賢者 [xian zhe]) replied, "There are ignorant people in the world who constantly commit evil deeds, performing the ten unwholesome actions (十惡 [shi e]) and falling into wrong views. Later, they fall into hell (地獄 [de yu]) and endure countless sufferings. The hell wardens (獄卒 [yu zu]) and Rākṣasas (羅剎 [luo sha]) inflict various punishments upon these sinners, such as chopping, cutting, pounding, or grinding, dissecting their bodies into hundreds of thousands of pieces. They experience knife mountains (刀山 [dao shan]), sword forests (劒林 [jian lin]), fiery chariots (火車 [huo che]), burning embers (煻煨 [tang wei]), cold ice (寒氷 [han bing]), and boiling excrement (沸屎 [fei shi]) — all these torments for tens of thousands of kalpas (千萬劫 [qian wan jie]). This is far more terrifying than you." The god (神 [shen]) then remained silent and disappeared.

[0340b28] They gradually moved forward for several more days. The sea god (海神 [hai shen]) transformed himself again into a very emaciated human body, with skin and bones clinging together, breathing heavily. He approached the ship and asked the merchants, "Have you ever seen anyone in the world as thin as I am?" The sage (賢者 [xian zhe]) replied, "There are those who are even more emaciated and withered than you." The god (神 [shen]) said, "Who are they?" The sage (賢者 [xian zhe]) replied, "There are ignorant people whose nature is evil and corrupt, who are greedy, stingy, and jealous, and do not know how to practice generosity (布施 [bu shi]). Later, they fall into the realm of hungry ghosts (餓鬼 [e gui]), with heads as large as mountains and throats as narrow as needles, their hair disheveled, and their appearance scorched black. For long kalpas (長劫 [zhang jie]), they do not even hear the names of food or drink. Such emaciation is far worse than yours." The sea god (海神 [hai shen]) then released the ship and disappeared.

[0340c07] Gradually moving forward for several more days, the sea god (海神 [hai shen]) transformed again into a young man, extremely handsome and upright. He emerged and held the ship, asking the merchants, "Have you ever seen anyone as young and powerful as me?" The sage (賢者 [xian zhe]) replied, "There are those who are hundreds of thousands of times more superior in form and quality than you." The god (神 [shen]) asked, "Who are they?" The sage (賢者 [xian zhe]) replied, "There are wise people in the world who observe the ten good deeds (十善 [shi shan]), always keeping their body, speech, and mind pure. They firmly believe in the Triple Gem (三寶 [san bao]) and make offerings regularly. When such people die, they are reborn in the heavens (tianshang 天上 [tian shang]), with upright and handsome countenances that are unparalleled in the world. Compared to them, your form is like a blind monkey compared to a celestial maiden."

[0340c14] The sea god (海神 [hai shen]), hearing this, silently felt ashamed and thought, "This merchant leader (商主 [shang zhu]) possesses profound knowledge and wisdom, and is skilled at discussing karmic retribution. His eloquence is such that I will test him with a simple question." He then scooped up a handful of water with his right hand and asked, "Is there more water in this scoop, or more water in the ocean?" The sage (賢者 [xian zhe]) replied, "There is more water in the scoop, and less water in the ocean." The god (神 [shen]) then pressed him, "It is visible to the eye; what you are saying now is truly hard to believe." The sage (賢者 [xian zhe]) replied, "This statement is true and definitely not mistaken; it is not something that worldly wisdom can comprehend. How can I explain it? Although the ocean water is vast, it will inevitably dry up. When the kalpa (劫 [jie]) is about to end, the great chiliocosm (大千 [da qian]) will be destroyed, Mount Sumeru (須彌 [xu mi]) and the vast ocean will be annihilated without a trace. This proves that the ocean water will surely be exhausted. However, if there is a person with pure faith who offers a scoop of water to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), or gives it to sentient beings, or offers it to their parents, or gives it to beggars, or even to animals, the function of this small good cause will not be exhausted even after countless kalpas (塵劫 [chen jie]). Therefore, you should know that the ocean water is less, and the water in the scoop is more." At that time, the sea god (海神 [hai shen]) was greatly rejoiced. He immediately presented the sage (賢者 [xian zhe]) with various wondrous and precious jewels, entrusting him to give these valuable gifts to the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and the Saṃgha (僧 [seng]).

[0340c28] At that time, all the merchants returned to their respective countries and went to the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) residence. They prostrated themselves and paid homage, holding the items entrusted by the sea god (海神 [hai shen]) and their own offerings. They knelt with joined palms and said, "World Honored One! We are fortunate to have received your distant compassionate protection. We entered the ocean, escaped danger, and returned home with treasures. We are all grateful for the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) grace and wish to become your disciples." The Buddha (佛 [fu]) said, "Well done!" They immediately obtained the characteristics of bhikkhus (苾芻相 [bi chu xiang]), exhausted all their attachments, and attained Arhatship (阿羅漢 [a luo han]).
