{2} Chapter on Requiting Kindness, Part 2

[0301a20] Thereupon, the Buddha addressed 智光 [zhi guang] (Zhiguang): "Excellent, excellent! You have come to my abode for the sake of the Dharma, offering and showing reverence, and delighting in hearing this Dharma. Listen carefully and reflect well. If there are good men or good women who arouse the Bodhi mind for the sake of hearing the essential Dharma, with every step they take, whether near or far, the number of dust particles on the ground they tread upon is such that by this cause and condition, they will gain the Golden Wheel-Turning Sage King (金輪轉輪聖王 [jin lun zhuan lun sheng wang]); when the Sage King's (聖王 [sheng wang]) retribution ends, they become a Heavenly King of the Desire Realm (欲天王 [yu tian wang]); when the Heavenly King's (欲天王 [yu tian wang]) retribution ends, they become a Brahma Heaven King (梵天王 [fan tian wang]), see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, and quickly realize the wondrous fruit. You, great Elder, and the other multitudes, who have come to my abode for the sake of the Dharma, having traveled eighty yojanas, the number of dust particles on the great earth, each and every one, can inspire the retribution of a human or heavenly Wheel-Turning King (輪王 [lun wang]). Having heard the Dharma, you will eventually attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Although I have previously expounded the profound and subtle meaning of the Four Kinds of Kindness, I will now proclaim this meaning to you again." And he spoke in verses:

"The most supreme Dharma King, the Great Sage Lord,
Unequaled by all humans and devas.
Adorned with all excellent marks,
His ocean of wisdom is boundless as space.
His actions for self and others are perfectly complete,
His renown spreads throughout all lands.
He has permanently severed the residual defilements of vexations,
And well maintains secret practices, guarding all senses.
With one hundred forty uncommon virtues,
His vast ocean of blessings is perfectly complete.
Samadhi and supernatural powers are all fully endowed,
He constantly enjoys wandering in the eight abodes of self-mastery.
Humans, devas, and externalists in the ten directions,
None can challenge the Controller and Tamer.
His golden mouth proclaims unimpeded eloquence,
Though none can question, He speaks of His own accord.
Like the ocean tide that never fails,
Also like the heavenly drum that accords with the heavenly mind.
Such self-mastery is possessed only by the Buddha,
Not by the five-penetrating immortals, maras, or Brahmas.
After cultivating vows through immeasurable kalpas,
He has attained such great supernatural powers.
I enter the great silent chamber of samadhi,
Observing all faculties and their ailments.
Coming out of meditation, I praise
The Dharma gate of the Mind-Ground (心地門 [xin de men]) of the Buddhas of the three periods.
At that time, all the elders retreated from their great aspiration,
Content to abide in the self-benefiting practices of the Two Vehicles.
I open the Dharma of great wisdom and skillful means,
Leading them into the gate of liberation of the three emptinesses.
The Tathagata's intention is immeasurable,
Only the Buddha can know its true secret.
Sharp-witted Śrāvakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]) and Pratyekabuddhas (獨覺 [du jue]),
Diligent and non-regressing Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]),
Even if they measure together for twelve kalpas,
They cannot know even a small part.
Suppose the wisdom of all ordinary and noble beings in the ten directions
Is bestowed upon one person to be a wise one,
Such wise ones, like a bamboo forest,
Cannot measure even a small part.
Ordinary sentient beings in the world lack the eye of wisdom,
Lost in the place of kindness, they lose the wondrous fruit.
Sentient beings in the five defilements of the evil age,
Do not awaken to profound kindness, and constantly turn their backs on virtue.
I open and show them the Four Kinds of Kindness (四恩 [si en]),
Leading them into the right view of the Bodhi path.
The kindness of a compassionate father and a loving mother who nurture,
Brings happiness to all sons and daughters.
A compassionate father's kindness is high as a mountain king (山王 [shan wang]),
A loving mother's kindness is deep as the great sea.
If I were to remain in the world for one kalpa,
Speaking of a loving mother's kindness, I could not exhaust it.
I now briefly speak of a small part,
Like a mosquito drinking from the great sea.
Suppose someone, for the sake of blessings,
Makes offerings to pure-practicing Brahmins (婆羅門 [po luo men]),
Those with five supernatural powers, who are self-mastered immortals,
Great wise teachers and good friends,
Arranges halls and palaces with seven treasures,
And sandalwood rooms of ox-head (牛頭 [niu tou]) variety,
Spreads out all kinds of precious bedding,
Offers worldly delicacies like nectar (甘露 [gan lu]),
And various herbal medicines for ten thousand ailments,
Filled in gold and silver vessels.
If such offerings are made three times a day,
Even for a hundred kalpas,
It is not equal to a single thought expressing a small part
Of offering to the great field of kindness of a loving mother.
The blessings are boundless and immeasurable,
Incomparable by calculation or analogy.
A loving mother in the world carries her child,
Enduring prolonged suffering for ten months of pregnancy.
Her mind is not attached to the pleasures of the five desires,
And her eating and drinking are likewise at all times.
Day and night, she constantly harbors a compassionate heart,
Enduring all sufferings in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down.
When she gives birth to the child she carried in the womb,
It is like being pricked by sharp blades, dismembering her limbs.
Confused and disoriented, she cannot discern east from west,
Her whole body aches unbearably.
Sometimes, because of this difficulty, she dies,
And her six relatives and family are all saddened and distressed.
All these sufferings are due to the child,
The sorrow, grief, and pain are beyond words.
If she recovers and her body is well and happy,
It is like a poor person obtaining treasure, her joy is immeasurable.
She gazes at the child's face without satiety,
Her compassionate thought never abandons the child for a moment.
The bond of kindness between mother and child is always thus,
They are inseparable, close to her bosom, whether coming or going.
Mother's milk is like a nectar (甘露 [gan lu]) spring,
Nourishing and timely, it never dries up.
The kindness of her compassionate thought is truly incomparable,
The virtue of nurturing is also immeasurable.
The great earth in the world is called heavy,
A loving mother's kindness is heavier than that.
Mount Sumeru in the world is called high,
A loving mother's kindness is higher than that.
The fastest in the world is only a strong wind,
A mother's single thought is faster than that.
If there are sentient beings who are unfilial,
Causing their mother to harbor a moment of resentment,
Even a small word of complaint arises,
The son will suffer calamities in accordance with that word.
All Buddhas and Vajra Devas (金剛天 [jin gang tian]),
Divine immortals and secret Dharma, cannot save them.
If there are sons and daughters who follow their mother's teachings,
Obeying her wishes without disobedience,
All calamities will be eliminated,
And the devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) will protect them, ensuring constant peace and happiness.
If one can obey a loving mother,
Such sons and daughters are all extraordinary,
Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) of great compassion, manifesting in the human world,
Showing various skillful means to requite kindness.
If there are sons and daughters,
Who, to requite their mother's kindness, practice filial piety,
Cutting their flesh and pricking their blood to constantly provide for her,
Even if they do so for a kalpa,
Cultivating filial piety in various ways,
They still cannot requite the kindness of a moment.
For ten months in the womb,
Constantly feeding on milk and fat blood,
From infancy to childhood,
The mother's milk consumed is over a hundred bushels.
Food, medicine, and fine clothes,
The child comes first, the mother second, is the constant rule.
If the child is foolish and disliked by others,
The mother still loves and pities, never abandoning him.
Once there was a woman carrying her child,
Crossing the Ganges River (恒河 [heng he]) with its swift currents.
Because of the floating water, it was difficult to move forward,
And both she and her child sank, unable to let go.
Because of the power of this compassionate root of goodness,
At the end of her life, she was reborn in the Brahma Heaven (梵天 [fan tian]),
Long enjoying the samadhi joy of Brahma Heaven (梵天 [fan tian]),
And met the Tathagata and received a prophecy of Buddhahood.
Therefore, a loving mother has ten virtues (十德 [shi de]),
Their names established according to their beneficial meanings:
First is Great Earth (大地 [da de]), second is Able to Give Birth (能生 [neng sheng]),
Third is Able to Correct (能正者 [neng zheng zhe]), fourth is Nurturing and Rearing (養育 [yang yu]),
Fifth is Giving Wisdom (與智者 [yu zhi zhe]), sixth is Adornment (莊嚴 [zhuang yan]),
Seventh is Peace and Security (安隱 [an yin]), eighth is Instruction (教授 [jiao shou]),
Ninth is Admonition (教誡者 [jiao jie zhe]), tenth is Giving of Karma (與業 [yu ye]).
Other kindnesses do not surpass a mother's kindness.
What is the richest thing in the world?
What is the poorest thing in the world?
When a mother is in the hall, one is richest;
When a mother is not present, one is poorest.
When a mother is present, it is like midday;
When a loving mother dies, it is like sunset.
When a mother is present, all is complete;
When a loving mother dies, all is empty.
All good men and women in the world,
Their parents' kindness is as heavy as mountains.
They should always hold filial reverence in their hearts,
Knowing kindness and requiting kindness is the Holy Path (聖道 [sheng dao]).
Not sparing one's life to offer sweet delicacies,
Never for a single thought neglecting their care.
If their parents suddenly pass away,
They will truly be unable to requite the kindness.
The Buddha, in former cultivation, for his compassionate mother,
Attained the body of excellent marks and golden color,
His renown spread widely throughout the ten directions,
All humans and devas bowed down in reverence.
Humans and non-humans all revered him,
Because of his past requital of compassionate kindness.
I ascended to the Trayastrimsa Heaven (三十三天宮 [san shi san tian gong]),
For three months, I preached the true Dharma to my mother,
Enabling my mother to hear and return to the Right Path (正道 [zheng dao]),
And awaken to the patience of non-arising, never regressing.
All this was to requite compassionate kindness,
Though the requital was deep, it was still insufficient.
Maudgalyayana (目犍連 [mu jian lian]), foremost in supernatural powers,
Had already severed all vexations of the Three Realms.
With his supernatural power, he observed his compassionate mother,
And saw her suffering in the hungry ghost realm (餓鬼中 [e gui zhong]).
Maudgalyayana (目連 [mu lian]) himself went to requite his mother's kindness,
Saving his compassionate parent from the sufferings she endured,
She was reborn among the devas of the Heaven of Transformation (他化諸天眾 [ta hua zhu tian zhong]),
Together enjoying wandering in the heavenly palace.
One should know that parents' kindness is the deepest,
All Buddhas and Saints requite their virtue.
If a person sincerely makes offerings to the Buddha,
And also diligently cultivates filial piety,
The blessings of these two people are not different,
And their retribution in the three periods is inexhaustible.
Worldly people commit various sins for their children,
Falling into the three evil paths (三塗 [san tu]) and long enduring suffering.
Sons and daughters, not being saints and lacking supernatural powers,
Cannot see their transmigration and are difficult to requite.
Alas, worldly people lack saintly power (聖力 [sheng li]),
Unable to rescue their compassionate mother.
For this reason, you should know,
Diligently cultivate blessings and various merits.
Because sons and daughters pursue superior blessings,
A great golden light shines into hell (地獄 [de yu]).
Within the light, profound and wondrous sounds are proclaimed,
Awakening parents to arouse their minds.
Remembering the sins committed in previous lives,
A single thought of repentance eradicates them all.
Chanting "Namo Buddhas of the Three Periods,"
They escape the suffering body of the Avici hell (無暇苦難身 [wu xia ku nan shen]),
Reborn as humans or devas, long enjoying happiness,
Seeing the Buddha and hearing the Dharma, they will become Buddhas.
Or reborn in the Pure Lands (淨土 [jing tu]) of the ten directions,
With seven-jeweled lotus flowers as parents,
When the flowers open, they see the Buddha and awaken to non-arising,
Non-regressing Bodhisattvas are their fellow students,
They gain the power of the six supernatural powers (六神通 [liu shen tong]) and self-mastery,
And enter the wondrous palace of Bodhi.
All these are Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) appearing as sons and daughters,
By the power of their great vows, manifesting in the human world.
This is called truly requiting parents' kindness,
You sentient beings should all cultivate and learn this.
Sentient beings transmigrate in the six paths (六道 [liu dao]),
Like a wheel without beginning or end.
Sometimes as parents, sometimes as sons and daughters,
In every life, there is mutual kindness.
Seeing them as parents, no difference exists,
Without realizing saintly wisdom (聖智 [sheng zhi]), it is impossible to know.
All men are fathers,
All women are mothers.
How can one not requite the kindness of former lives,
But instead give rise to different thoughts and become resentful?
One should always requite kindness and mutually benefit,
And not beat or scold, leading to resentment and animosity.
If one wishes to increase the gates of blessings and wisdom,
Day and night, at six times, one should make vows,
"May I, in immeasurable kalpas throughout all lives,
Attain the great supernatural power of the knowledge of past lives (宿住智 [su zhu zhi]).
Able to know hundreds and thousands of past lives,
Mutually remembering as parents,
Cycling through the six realms (六趣 [liu qu]) and four modes of birth (四生 [si sheng]),
May my single thought always reach them.
For them, I will preach the wondrous Dharma that leads away from suffering,
So that they may attain human and heavenly happiness for a long time,
Encouraging them to arouse firm Bodhi vows,
And cultivate the six perfections (六度門 [liu du men]) of Bodhisattvas,
Permanently severing the causes of the two kinds of birth and death (二種生死因 [er zhong sheng si yin]),
Quickly realizing the supreme path of Nirvana (涅槃 [nie pan])."
All kings in the ten directions,
Ruling people with the Right Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]) are Sage Lords (聖主 [sheng zhu]).
A king's blessings and virtues are supreme,
His actions of self-mastery are called heavenly (天 [tian]).
The Trayastrimsa Heaven (三十三天 [san shi san tian]) and other heavens,
Constantly assist the king's rule with their power of blessings.
The Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) protect him like a single son,
For this, he is called Son of Heaven (天子 [tian zi]).
The world takes the king as its foundation,
All people depend on him.
Like all houses in the world,
Pillars are the foundation for their establishment.
The king rules the people with the Right Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]),
Like the Great Brahma King (大梵王 [da fan wang]) who creates all things.
If the king practices unlawful acts and has no proper governance,
It is like the King Yama (琰魔王 [yan mo wang]) who destroys the world.
If the king tolerates treacherous and evil people,
It is no different from an elephant trampling a flower pond.
Do not say that you are in a defiled and evil age,
Know that good and evil are cultivated by the king.
Like the Sun God (日天子 [ri tian zi]) who illuminates the world,
The king rules the world in the same way.
Although sunlight does not illuminate at night,
It enables sentient beings to attain peace and happiness.
If the king rules the world with unlawful acts,
All people will have no one to rely on.
All fears in the world,
Cannot arise due to the king's power of blessings.
The peace and happiness of the people,
Know that it is due to the king's blessings.
All excellent and wondrous flowers in the world,
Bloom by the power of the king's blessings;
All wondrous gardens in the world,
Flourish by the power of the king's blessings;
All medicinal herbs in the world,
Cure all diseases by the power of the king's blessings;
All grains and crops in the world,
Yield fruit by the power of the king's blessings;
People in the world enjoy abundance and happiness,
Naturally so by the power of the king's blessings.
For example, an elder has a son,
Who is wise and dignified, unequaled in the world.
His parents love him like their own eyes,
Day and night, they constantly harbor protective thoughts.
The great Sage King (聖王 [sheng wang]) of the country is also like this,
Loving and cherishing sentient beings as his own son.
Nourishing the elderly and helping the orphaned and lonely,
His mind in rewarding and punishing is always impartial.
Such a benevolent king is a Sage Lord (聖主 [sheng zhu]),
All living beings revere him like the Tathagata.
A benevolent king rules the country without calamities,
All people are diligent and constantly peaceful and secure.
If the king rules the world without Dharma,
Pestilences spread, causing suffering to sentient beings.
All such humans and non-humans,
Their good and evil are clear and cannot be hidden.
In good and evil Dharma, they are divided into seven parts,
The perpetrator receives five, the king receives two.
Gardens, forests, fields, and houses are all the same,
The taxes levied are also like this.
When a Wheel-Turning Sage King (轉輪聖王 [zhuan lun sheng wang]) appears,
It is divided into six parts, the king receives one.
At that time, the people receive five parts,
Good and evil karma and their retributions are all the same.
If a human king holds Right View (修正見 [xiu zheng jian]),
And rules the world according to Dharma, he is called Lord of Heaven (天主 [tian zhu]).
Because he rules the world according to heavenly Dharma,
Vaishravana King (毘沙門王 [pi sha men wang]) constantly protects him,
And other Three Heaven Rakshasas (三天羅剎眾 [san tian luo sha zhong]),
Shall all guard the palace of the Sage King (聖王 [sheng wang]).
When the Sage King (聖王 [sheng wang]) appears in the world to govern,
He benefits sentient beings and achieves ten virtues (十德 [shi de]):
First, he can illuminate the country,
Second, he adorns the land,
Third, he can give all peace and happiness,
Fourth, he can subdue all enemies,
Fifth, he can ward off all fears,
Sixth, he cultivates all sages,
Seventh, he is the foundation of all Dharmas,
Eighth, he protects the world,
Ninth, he can perform creative work,
Tenth, he is the lord of the country and its people.
If a king achieves these ten supreme virtues (十勝德 [shi sheng de]),
Brahma King (梵王 [fan wang]), Indra (帝釋 [di shi]), and all Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]),
Yaksha (夜叉 [ye cha]), Rakshasa (羅剎 [luo sha]), and Ghost Kings (鬼神王 [gui shen wang]),
Will secretly come and protect the country.
Dragon Kings (龍王 [long wang]) will joyfully send down sweet rain,
The five grains will ripen, and the people will be at peace.
Treasures will grow everywhere in the country,
People and horses will be strong, and there will be no enemies.
Wish-fulfilling jewels (如意寶珠 [ru yi bao zhu]) will appear before the king,
And kings from outside the borders will submit themselves.
If evil arises in the king's country,
A single thought arising leads to many evils.
Such a person, at the end of life, falls into hell (地獄 [de yu]),
Enduring suffering for eternal kalpas without end.
If one diligently assists the king,
The Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) will protect and cherish him, increasing his honor and emoluments.
Zhiguang (智光 [zhi guang]) Elder, you should know,
All human kings are born from karma.
All Dharmas are formed by causes and conditions,
If there are no causes and conditions, there are no Dharmas.
To say there are no heavens or evil paths,
Such people do not understand causes.
No cause, no effect is a great heretical view (邪見 [xie jian]),
Not knowing sin and blessing, they give rise to false thoughts.
The king now receives all blessings and joys,
Because in the past he upheld the three pure precepts (三淨戒 [san jing jie]).
The fragrance of precepts cultivated has attracted
The wondrous fruit of human and heavenly rebirth, obtaining the body of a king.
If a person arouses the Bodhi mind (菩提心 [pu ti xin]),
And the power of vows assists in achieving the supreme fruit,
Firmly upholding the superior pure precepts (上品清淨戒 [shang pin qing jing jie]),
He will be a Dharma King (法王 [fa wang]) with self-mastery in all actions,
His supernatural powers and transformations filling the ten directions,
Universally saving all beings according to their circumstances.
Those who uphold the middle grade of Bodhisattva precepts (中品受持菩薩戒 [zhong pin shou chi pu sa jie]),
Will have blessings and self-mastery as a Wheel-Turning King (轉輪王 [zhuan lun wang]).
Whatever they wish to do will be accomplished,
And countless humans and devas will all follow them.
Those who uphold the lower superior grade (下上品持 [xia shang pin chi]) will be a great ghost king (大鬼王 [da gui wang]),
All non-human beings will submit to them.
Even if their upholding of precepts is flawed,
Because of the superiority of precepts, they become king.
Those who uphold the lower middle grade (下中品持 [xia zhong pin chi]) will be a king of birds and beasts (禽獸王 [qin shou wang]),
All flying and walking creatures will submit to them.
Even if their pure precepts are flawed,
Because of the superiority of precepts, they become king.
Those who uphold the lower inferior grade (下下品持 [xia xia pin chi]) will be King Yama (琰魔王 [yan mo wang]),
Constantly self-mastered in hell (地獄 [de yu]).
Although they may violate the precepts and be reborn in evil paths,
Because of the superiority of precepts, they become king.
For this reason, all sentient beings,
Should receive the Bodhisattva pure precepts (菩薩清淨戒 [pu sa qing jing jie]).
If they can well protect and uphold them without fault,
They will become human kings wherever they are reborn.
If one does not receive the Tathagata's precepts,
One cannot even obtain the body of a jackal,
How much less can one attain the supreme joy of a king's position
Among humans and devas?
Therefore, a king is not without cause,
Diligent cultivation of precepts and karma leads to wondrous fruit.
The king is truly the lord of the people,
Caring for them like a mother nourishing her infant.
Such a human king has great kindness,
His nurturing heart is hard to requite.
For this reason, all sentient beings,
If they can cultivate and realize great Bodhi,
And arouse great compassion for all sentient beings,
They should receive the Tathagata's Three Aggregated Precepts (三聚戒 [san ju jie]).
If one wishes to receive precepts according to Dharma,
One should repent of sins to eliminate them.
The causes of sin are tenfold (十緣 [shi yuan]):
Three of body, four of speech, and three of mind.
Birth and death are without beginning, sins are inexhaustible,
The ocean of afflictions is bottomless,
Karmic obstacles are as high as Mount Sumeru (須彌 [xu mi]).
The creation of karma arises from two kinds of causes (二種起 [er zhong qi]):
Namely, present action (現行 [xian xing]) and seeds (種子 [zhong zi]),
The storehouse consciousness (藏識 [cang shi]) holds all seeds in relation to conditions.
Like a shadow following the form, it never leaves the body,
At all times obstructing the Holy Path (聖道 [sheng dao]).
Near, it obstructs the wondrous fruits of human and heavenly realms;
Far, it obstructs the supreme fruit of Bodhi.
At home, it can cause afflictions;
Leaving home, it also breaks the pure precepts (清淨戒 [qing jing jie]).
If one can repent according to Dharma,
All afflictions will be removed,
Just as the kalpa fire (劫火 [jie huo]) destroys the world,
Burning up Mount Sumeru (須彌 [xu mi]) and the great seas.
Repentance can burn the fuel of afflictions,
Repentance can lead to the path to heaven,
Repentance can attain the joy of four dhyanas (四禪樂 [si chan le]),
Repentance can rain down Mani jewels (摩尼珠 [mo ni zhu]),
Repentance can extend the Vajra life (金剛壽 [jin gang shou]),
Repentance can enter the palace of constant joy,
Repentance can exit the prison of the Three Realms,
Repentance can open the flower of Bodhi,
Repentance can see the great perfect mirror of the Buddha,
Repentance can reach the treasure place.
If one can repent according to Dharma,
One should cultivate according to two kinds of contemplation gates (二種觀門 [er zhong guan men]):
First is the gate of contemplating affairs to eradicate sins (觀事滅罪門 [guan shi mie zui men]),
Second is the gate of contemplating principles to eradicate sins (觀理滅罪門 [guan li mie zui men]).
Contemplating affairs to eradicate sins (觀事滅罪 [guan shi mie zui]) has three (其三 [qi san]):
Superior, middle, and inferior roots form three grades.
If there are superior roots seeking pure precepts (淨戒 [jing jie]),
They arouse great diligence with an unwavering mind,
Tears of sorrow and blood crying, constantly earnest,
Deeply moved, blood appears all over their body.
Their mind is focused on the Three Jewels (三寶 [san bao]) in the ten directions,
And also on all sentient beings in the six paths,
Kneeling with palms together, their mind undisturbed,
They reveal and cleanse their mind, seeking repentance.
'Only may the Buddhas of the three periods in the ten directions,
With great compassion, pity me.
I am in transmigration without reliance,
In the long night of birth and death, constantly unaware.
I, a common person, am bound by many ties,
My mad mind, deluded, clings everywhere.
I am in the burning house of the Three Realms,
Delusionally defiled by the six dusts, without rescue.
I was born into a poor and lowly family,
Not free, constantly enduring suffering.
I was born into a family with heretical views,
Committing sins by relying on evil relatives.
Only may the Buddhas, great compassionate Lords,
Pity and protect me like a single son.
Once I repent, I will not commit any more sins,
The Tathagatas of the three periods will bear witness.'
Such courageous and diligent repenters,
Are called superior grade seekers of pure precepts (上品求淨戒 [shang pin qiu jing jie]).
If there are middle roots seeking precepts,
With single-minded courage, they repent of all sins,
Tears streaming down their face unknowingly,
Their whole body sweating, they earnestly seek the Buddha.
'I reveal the karma of beginningless birth and death,
May the water of great compassion wash away defilements.
Cleansing sin obstacles, purifying the six senses,
Bestow upon me the Bodhisattva Three Aggregated Precepts (菩薩三聚戒 [pu sa san ju jie]).
I vow to uphold them firmly without regression,
Diligently cultivate to deliver suffering sentient beings.
Before I am delivered, I will deliver others,
Constantly without interruption until the end of future kalpas.'
Such diligent and courageous ones,
Do not spare their lives in seeking Bodhi,
They can inspire auspicious signs from the Three Jewels (三寶 [san bao]),
This is called middle grade great repentance (中品大懺悔 [zhong pin da chan hui]).
If there are inferior roots seeking pure precepts (淨戒 [jing jie]),
They arouse the supreme Bodhi mind (無上菩提心 [wu shang pu ti xin]),
Tears streaming, sorrowful, body hair standing on end,
Deeply ashamed and remorseful for the sins committed.
Before the Three Jewels (三寶 [san bao]) in the ten directions,
And before all sentient beings in the six paths,
Sincerely revealing all that has troubled sentient beings
Since beginningless time.
Arousing boundless great compassion,
Not sparing their lives, they repent of the three karmas (三業 [san ye]).
Sins already committed are all revealed,
Evils not yet committed will not be committed again.
These three grades of repentance (三品懺 [san pin chan]) for all sins,
Are all called the first pure precepts (第一清淨戒 [di yi qing jing jie]).
Washing away defilements with the water of shame and remorse,
Body and mind both become pure vessels.
All good men, you should know,
I have already spoken of the pure contemplation and all repentance (淨觀諸懺悔 [jing guan zhu chan hui]).
There is no difference in their affairs and principles,
But only in the different capacities of the roots.
If one wishes to cultivate the contemplation of right principle (觀正理 [guan zheng li]),
One should avoid all distractions,
Wear new clean clothes and sit in the lotus position,
Gathering the mind with right mindfulness, free from all conditions.
Constantly contemplate the Buddha's wondrous Dharma body (妙法身 [miao fa shen]),
Its nature is like space, unattainable.
All sins are inherently like this,
Arising from deluded causes and conditions, and a deluded mind.
Such forms of sin are originally empty,
In the three periods, nothing can be attained.
Not inside, not outside, not in between,
Its nature and form are like reality, both unmoving.
The wondrous principle of True Suchness (真如 [zhen ru]) is beyond words,
Only saintly wisdom (聖智 [sheng zhi]) can comprehend it.
Neither existent nor non-existent, neither both nor neither,
Beyond names and forms,
Pervading the Dharma Realm (法界 [fa jie]) without arising or ceasing,
All Buddhas are originally of the same essence.
Only may the Buddhas grant their protection,
Able to eliminate all deluded minds.
May I soon awaken to the source of True Nature (真性源 [zhen xing yuan]),
And quickly realize the Tathagata's supreme path.
If there are pure-minded good men,
Who can contemplate the wondrous principle of emptiness (妙理空 [miao li kong]) day and night,
All karmic obstacles will be eliminated by themselves,
This is called the supreme upholding of pure precepts (最上持淨戒 [zui shang chi jing jie]).
If a person contemplates and knows the emptiness of reality (實相空 [shi xiang kong]),
They can eliminate all heavy sins,
Just as a great wind blows a raging fire,
Able to burn countless grasses and trees.
All good men, the true contemplation (真實觀 [zhen shi guan]),
Is called the secret essential gate of all Buddhas (諸佛祕要門 [zhu fu mi yao men]).
If you wish to extensively explain it to others,
Do not proclaim it to unwise people,
All ordinary foolish sentient beings,
Will certainly give rise to doubt and disbelieve when they hear it.
If there are wise ones who believe and understand,
Contemplating True Suchness (真如 [zhen ru]) in every thought,
All Buddhas in the ten directions will appear before them,
And the wondrous fruit of Bodhi will be realized naturally.
Good men, after my passing,
In future generations, those with pure faith,
Who constantly repent through the two contemplation gates (二觀門 [er guan men]),
Shall receive the Bodhisattva Three Aggregated Precepts (菩薩三聚戒 [pu sa san ju jie]).
If one wishes to uphold the superior precepts (上品戒 [shang pin jie]),
One should invite precept masters, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas.
Invite me, Sakyamuni Buddha (釋迦牟尼佛 [shi jia mou ni fu]),
To be the precept master (戒和上 [jie he shang]) for Bodhisattva precepts;
Dragon Seed Pure Wisdom King Buddha (龍種淨智尊王佛 [long zhong jing zhi zun wang fu]),
To be the pure precepts Acarya (淨戒阿闍梨 [jing jie a du li]);
The future guide, Maitreya Buddha (彌勒佛 [mi lei fu]),
To be the pure instruction master (清淨教授師 [qing jing jiao shou shi]);
The present Two-Legged Honored Ones (兩足尊 [liang zu zun]) in the ten directions,
To be the pure precept witnessing masters (清淨證戒師 [qing jing zheng jie shi]);
All Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) in the ten directions,
To be companions in learning the precepts;
Indra (釋梵 [shi fan]), the Four Heavenly Kings (四王 [si wang]), and Vajra Devas (金剛天 [jin gang tian]),
To be the external protectors for those learning the precepts.
By inviting such Buddhas and Bodhisattvas,
And the present precept-transmitting masters,
For the sake of requiting the Four Kinds of Kindness (四恩 [si en]),
Arouse the pure Bodhi mind (清淨菩提心 [qing jing pu ti xin]),
One should receive the Bodhisattva Three Aggregated Precepts (菩薩三聚戒 [pu sa san ju jie]):
The precept of benefiting all sentient beings,
The precept of cultivating all good Dharmas,
The precept of cultivating all disciplines.
Such Three Aggregated Pure Precepts (三聚清淨戒 [san ju qing jing jie]),
Are cherished by the Tathagatas of the three periods;
Sentient beings who have not heard the unlawful Dharma,
Have not heard or seen them for immeasurable kalpas.
Only the past Buddhas in the ten directions,
Have already received and constantly upheld the pure precepts,
Permanently severing the two obstacles of vexations,
Attaining the supreme fruit of Bodhi.
All future World-Honored Ones,
Will guard the precious Three Aggregated Pure Precepts (三聚淨戒寶 [san ju jing jie bao]),
Severing the three obstacles and their residual habits,
They will attain Perfect Enlightenment (正等大菩提 [zheng deng da pu ti]).
The present Sugatas (善逝 [shan shi]) in the ten directions,
Have fully cultivated the causes of the Three Aggregated Pure Precepts (三聚淨戒 [san ju jing jie]),
Permanently severing the suffering of transmigration in birth and death,
Attaining the Bodhi fruit of the Three Bodies (三身 [san shen]).
Transcending the deep ocean of birth and death,
The Bodhisattva pure precepts (菩薩淨戒 [pu sa jing jie]) are the boat and raft.
Permanently severing the bonds of greed, hatred, and delusion,
The Bodhisattva pure precepts (菩薩淨戒 [pu sa jing jie]) are the sharp sword.
The dangers and fears of the difficult path of birth and death,
The Bodhisattva pure precepts (菩薩淨戒 [pu sa jing jie]) are the dwelling.
Eliminating the causes of poverty and suffering,
Pure precepts can be like a wish-fulfilling jewel (如意寶 [ru yi bao]).
Diseases caused by ghosts and demons,
The Bodhisattva pure precepts (菩薩淨戒 [pu sa jing jie]) are the good medicine.
Becoming a king among humans and devas with self-mastery,
The Three Aggregated Pure Precepts (三聚淨戒 [san ju jing jie]) are the good cause.
And the bodies of kings in the other four realms,
Pure precepts are the cause for attaining superior results.
Therefore, one who can cultivate the cause of self-mastery,
Will attain kingship and honor.
One should first respectfully bow to the Buddhas in the ten directions,
And cultivate pure precepts (清淨戒 [qing jing jie]) day and night.
Protected and cherished by the Buddhas, constantly upheld,
The precepts are like Vajra (金剛 [jin gang]), unbreakable.
All Devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) and good spirits in the Three Realms,
Will guard the king's body and his relatives.
All enemies will submit,
And the people will rejoice, moved by the king's rule.
Therefore, upholding the Bodhisattva precepts (菩薩戒 [pu sa jie]),
Inspires both worldly and transcendental unconditioned fruits.
The Three Jewels (三寶 [san bao]) constantly abide in the world,
Their kindness and virtue are vast and inconceivable.
In the kalpas of past, future, and present,
Their merits benefit sentient beings without cessation.
The Buddha-sun (佛日 [fu ri]) constantly illuminates the world with a thousand rays,
Benefiting sentient beings and delivering those with affinities.
Those without affinities do not see the Buddha's compassionate light,
Like blind people who see nothing.
The Dharma treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) has one flavor, unchanging,
What former Buddhas and later Buddhas preach is all the same.
Like rain of one flavor universally moistening,
Grasses and trees flourish, differing in size.
Sentient beings understand according to their capacities,
Grasses and trees receive moisture differently.
Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) and Śrāvakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]) transform sentient beings,
Like the water of a great river that never runs dry.
Sentient beings without faith are not touched by the transformation,
Like being in deep darkness where the sun cannot shine.
The Tathagata's moonlight (月光 [yue guang]) is very cool and clear,
Able to remove all darkness, also like this.
Like a covered basin, the moon does not shine,
Confused sentient beings are also like this.
The Dharma treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) is like nectar (甘露 [gan lu]), a wondrous good medicine,
Able to cure all diseases of affliction.
Those with faith who take the medicine attain Bodhi,
Those without faith, according to their conditions, fall into evil paths.
Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) and Śrāvakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]) are always in the world,
With countless skillful means to deliver sentient beings.
If there are sentient beings with faith and joy,
Each enters the peaceful state of the Three Vehicles (三乘 [san cheng]).
If the Tathagata does not appear in the world,
All sentient beings enter the heretical path (邪道 [xie dao]),
Forever leaving nectar (甘露 [gan lu]) and drinking poison,
Long drowning in the ocean of suffering without end.
The Buddha-sun (佛日 [fu ri]) appears in the three thousand worlds (三千界 [san qian jie]),
Emitting great light to illuminate the long night.
Sentient beings are like those asleep, unaware,
By the light, they enter the unconditioned chamber (無為室 [wu wei shi]).
Before the Tathagata preached the One Vehicle Dharma (一乘法 [yi cheng fa]),
The lands in the ten directions were all empty.
Arousing the mind to cultivate and attain Perfect Enlightenment (正覺 [zheng jue]),
All Buddha lands are adorned and pure.
The One Vehicle Dharma treasure (一乘法寶 [yi cheng fa bao]) is the mother of all Buddhas,
The Tathagatas of the three periods are born from it.
Cultivating prajna (般若 [ban ruo]) and skillful means without interruption,
The path of liberation is accomplished, ascending to Wondrous Enlightenment (妙覺 [miao jue]).
If Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do not appear,
Sentient beings in the world have no guide.
The dangers of birth and death cannot be overcome,
How can they reach the treasure place (寶所 [bao suo])?
With the power of great vows as a good friend,
Constantly proclaiming the wondrous Dharma to practice,
Proceeding to the ten stages (十地 [shi de]) and attaining Bodhi,
Skillfully entering the peaceful place of Nirvana.
Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) of great compassion transform the world,
For the sake of skillfully guiding sentient beings.
Internally they keep secret the true practice of the One Vehicle (一乘真實行 [yi cheng zhen shi xing]),
Externally they manifest as Pratyekabuddhas (緣覺 [yuan jue]) and Śrāvakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]).
Those with dull roots and small wisdom who hear the One Vehicle (一乘 [yi cheng]),
Are fearful and arouse their minds over many kalpas,
Not knowing that they have the Tathagata-garbha (如來藏 [ru lai cang]) within their bodies,
Only delighting in cessation and厭離 [yan li] (yanli, aversion) to defilements.
Sentient beings originally have the Bodhi seeds (菩提種 [pu ti zhong]),
All residing in the alaya-vijñāna (賴耶藏識 [lai ye cang shi]).
If they meet a good friend and arouse a great mind,
They cultivate wondrous practices through three kinds of purification (三種鍊磨 [san zhong lian mo]),
Permanently severing the obstacles of vexations and what is known,
Attaining the Tathagata's permanent body (常住身 [chang zhu shen]).
The wondrous fruit of Bodhi is not difficult to achieve,
A true good spiritual friend (真善知識 [zhen shan zhi shi]) is truly hard to meet.
All Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) who cultivate the supreme path,
Should know four kinds of essential Dharmas (四種法要 [si zhong fa yao]):
Approaching a good friend (善友 [shan you]) is the first,
Hearing the Right Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]) is the second,
Reflecting according to principle is the third,
Cultivating and realizing according to Dharma is the fourth.
All great Sage Lords (大聖主 [da sheng zhu]) in the ten directions,
Cultivated these four Dharmas and attained Bodhi.
You, elders and the great assembly,
And pure-minded men in future generations,
These four Dharmas (四法 [si fa]) are the Bodhisattva stages (菩薩地 [pu sa de]),
Must be cultivated to attain Buddhahood.
Good men, listen carefully,
The Four Kinds of Kindness (四恩 [si en]) spoken by the Tathagata,
The kindness of the Buddha Jewel (佛寶 [fu bao]) is supreme,
Arousing a great mind to deliver sentient beings.
Over three asamkhyeya great kalpas (三僧企邪大劫中 [san seng qi xie da jie zhong]),
He fully cultivated hundreds of thousands of various ascetic practices,
His merits perfected throughout the Dharma Realm (法界 [fa jie]),
And completely attained the ten stages (十地 [shi de]) and realized the Three Bodies (三身 [san shen]).
The Dharma body (法身 [fa shen]) pervades all sentient beings,
Ten thousand virtues solidified, its nature is constantly abiding,
Neither arising nor ceasing, without coming or going,
Neither one nor different, neither permanent nor断 [duan] (duan, severed).
The Dharma Realm (法界 [fa jie]) is full like empty space,
All Tathagatas mutually cultivate and realize it.
All conditioned and unconditioned merits,
Depend on the Dharma body (法身 [fa shen]) and are always pure.
The Dharma body's (法身 [fa shen]) original nature is like empty space,
Far from the six dusts, undefiled.
The Dharma body (法身 [fa shen]) is formless and apart from all marks,
Both the mark and the marked are all empty.
Such a Buddha's wondrous Dharma body (妙法身 [miao fa shen]),
Is beyond speculative words, its marks are tranquil and extinguished,
Far from all distinctions,
The sphere of mind's activity is extinguished, its essence is all suchness.
To attain the Tathagata's body,
Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) skillfully cultivate ten thousand practices (萬行 [wan xing]),
The body of wisdom is unconditioned, True Dharma Nature (真法性 [zhen fa xing]),
Color and mind are the same for all Buddhas.
For example, a bird flying to a golden mountain (金山 [jin shan]),
Can make its body the same color as the mountain.
All Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) are like flying birds,
The Buddha's Dharma body (法身 [fa shen]) is like a golden mountain (金山 [jin shan]).
The marks and characteristics of the Self-Enjoyment Body (自受用身 [zi shou yong shen]),
Each one pervades the ten directions' Buddha-fields (十方剎 [shi fang sha]).
The four wisdoms (四智 [si zhi]) are perfectly clear, enjoying the joy of Dharma,
Former Buddhas and later Buddhas are all of the same essence.
Although pervading the Dharma Realm (法界 [fa jie]) without obstruction,
Such a wondrous realm is inconceivable.
This body constantly abides in the Retribution Buddha Land (報佛土 [bao fu tu]),
Enjoying the joy of Dharma without interruption.
The marks and characteristics of the Other-Enjoyment Body (佗受用身 [tuo shou yong shen]),
Appear according to capacity without increase or decrease.
To transform Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) on the stages (地上 [de shang]),
One Buddha manifests ten kinds of bodies (十種身 [shi zhong shen]),
Each manifestation is different according to what is appropriate,
Increasing exponentially to infinity.
Preaching the essential Dharmas according to their capacities,
Leading them to enjoy the joy of Dharma and enter the One Vehicle (一乘 [yi cheng]).
They gain supernatural powers and gradually increase,
And the Dharma gates they awaken to are also like this.
Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) on lower stages arouse wisdom,
But cannot comprehend those on higher stages.
The transformer and the transformed increase according to the stages,
Each belonging to their original affinities.
Or one Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) is transformed by many Buddhas,
Or many Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) are transformed by one Buddha.
Thus, ten Buddhas (十佛 [shi fu]) attain Perfect Enlightenment (正覺 [zheng jue]),
Each sitting on a seven-jeweled Bodhi tree (七寶菩提樹 [qi bao pu ti shu]).
When a former Buddha enters Nirvana (入滅 [ru mie]), a later Buddha achieves,
Unlike Manifestation Buddhas (化佛 [hua fu]) appearing for kalpas.
The lotus seats on which the ten Buddhas (十佛 [shi fu]) sit,
Each has a hundred thousand leaves,
In each leaf, there is one Buddha land,
Which is a great thousand world (三千大千界 [san qian da qian jie]).
In each world, there are hundreds of billions (百億 [bai yi]) of
Suns, moons, stars, and four great continents (四大洲 [si da zhou]),
The six desire heavens (六欲諸天 [liu yu zhu tian]) and the four dhyana heavens (四禪 [si chan]),
The realm of boundless space (空處 [kong chu]), realm of boundless consciousness (識處 [shi chu]), realm of neither perception nor non-perception (非想 [fei xiang]), and so on.
Among the four continents (四洲 [si zhou]), the Southern Jambudvipa (南贍部 [nan shan bu]),
Each has a Vajra seat (金剛座 [jin gang zuo]),
And a great Bodhi tree king (菩提大樹王 [pu ti da shu wang]).
So many transformed Buddha bodies,
Simultaneously attain the Bodhi path,
Turning the wondrous Dharma wheel in the great thousand world (大千 [da qian]),
Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]), Pratyekabuddhas (緣覺 [yuan jue]), and Śrāvakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]),
Attain Holy Fruit (聖果 [sheng guo]) according to their capacities.
Such a Three-bodied Buddha (三身佛 [san shen fu]) spoken of,
Is supreme and incomparable, called the Jewel (寶 [bao]).
The Dharma spoken by the Response Body (應化二身 [ying hua er shen]),
Teaching, principle, practice, and fruit are the Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]).
Buddhas take Dharma as their great teacher,
The Bodhi path realized by cultivating the mind.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) is unchanging in the three periods,
All Buddhas return to it for learning.
I now bow to Sarvajna (薩婆若 [sa po ruo]),
Therefore, the Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) is spoken of as the Buddha's teacher.
Or entering raging fire, one cannot be burned,
Immediately attaining true liberation.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can destroy the prison of birth and death,
Like a Vajra (金剛 [jin gang]) shattering all things.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can illuminate the minds of sentient beings,
Like the Sun God (日天子 [ri tian zi]) overseeing the sky.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can be a strong ship,
Able to cross the river of craving and reach the other shore.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can give joy to sentient beings,
Like a heavenly drum (天鼓 [tian gu]) responding to the heavenly mind.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can save sentient beings from poverty,
Like a Mani jewel (摩尼珠 [mo ni zhu]) raining all treasures.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can be the stair to the Three Jewels (三寶 [san bao]),
Hearing the Dharma and cultivating causes to be born in higher realms.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) is the golden wheel of the great Sage King (金輪大聖王 [jin lun da sheng wang]),
With the great power of Dharma, it breaks the four maras (四魔 [si mo]).
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can be a great treasure chariot,
Able to transport sentient beings out of the burning house.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can be a great guide,
Able to lead sentient beings to the treasure place (寶所 [bao suo]).
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can blow the great Dharma conch,
Awakening sentient beings to attain Buddhahood.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can be a great Dharma lamp,
Able to illuminate all darkness of birth and death.
The Dharma Treasure (法寶 [fa bao]) can be a Vajra arrow (金剛箭 [jin gang jian]),
Able to stabilize the country and subdue all enemies.
The Dharma spoken by the Tathagatas of the three periods,
Can benefit sentient beings and free them from suffering,
Leading them into the peaceful city of Nirvana (涅槃 [nie pan]),
This is called the Dharma Treasure's (法寶 [fa bao]) kindness, hard to requite.
Zhiguang (智光 [zhi guang]) Elder, listen carefully,
There are three kinds of monks (三種 [san zhong]) in the world and beyond the world,
Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) and Śrāvakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]), saints (聖 [sheng]) and ordinary beings (凡眾 [fan zhong]),
Can benefit sentient beings as a field of blessings (福田 [fu tian]).
Manjushri (文殊師利 [wen shu shi li]) the great holy venerable,
Is the mother of the Buddhas of the three periods,
All Tathagatas in the ten directions, when they first aroused the mind,
Were all transformed by Manjushri's (文殊 [wen shu]) power.
All sentient beings in all worlds,
Who hear his name, see his body, or his light and forms,
And see his manifestations according to their kind,
All attain Buddhahood, which is inconceivable.
Maitreya Bodhisattva (彌勒菩薩 [mi lei pu sa]), the Dharma Prince (法王子 [fa wang zi]),
From the very beginning of arousing his mind, did not eat meat,
For this reason, he is named Ci Shi (慈氏 [ci shi], Maitreya, the Compassionate One),
For the purpose of maturing all sentient beings.
Residing in the Fourth Tusita Heaven (第四兜率天 [di si dou lu tian]),
In forty-nine layers of wish-fulfilling palaces (四十九重如意殿 [si shi jiu zhong ru yi dian]),
Day and night, he constantly preaches about non-regressing practice (不退行 [bu tui xing]),
With countless skillful means to deliver humans and devas.
The wondrous lotus ponds with eight merits water (八功德水 [ba gong de shui]),
All those with affinities are reborn there together.
My disciples are now entrusted to Maitreya (彌勒 [mi lei]),
And will gain liberation in the Dragon Flower Assembly (龍華會中 [long hua hui zhong]).
In the Age of Dharma Decline (末法中 [mo fa zhong]), good men,
Even offering a single morsel of food to sentient beings,
By this root of goodness, they will see Maitreya (彌勒 [mi lei]),
And will attain the ultimate path of Bodhi.
Sariputra (舍利弗 [she li fu]) and other great Śrāvakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]),
With wisdom and supernatural powers, transform living beings.
If one can achieve the precepts of liberation (解脫戒 [jie tuo jie]),
One is truly a practitioner of right view (正見人 [zheng jian ren]).
Preaching the Great Vehicle (大乘 [da cheng]) to others,
Such a field of blessings (福田 [fu tian]) is supreme.
Or there is a kind of ordinary monk (凡夫僧 [fan fu seng]),
Whose precepts are not complete, but who has right view (正見 [zheng jian]).
Praising the subtle Dharma of the One Vehicle (一乘 [yi cheng]),
Sins are eliminated as they repent for their transgressions.
Becoming a cause for all sentient beings to attain Buddhahood,
Such an ordinary person (凡夫 [fan fu]) is also a Sangha Jewel (僧寶 [seng bao]).
Like a saffron flower (欝金華 [yu jin hua]), though withered,
It is still superior to all other wondrous flowers.
A right-view bhikṣu (正見比丘 [zheng jian bi qiu]) is also like this,
Unsurpassed by the four kinds of Wheel-Turning Kings (四種輪王 [si zhong lun wang]).
Such four kinds of holy and ordinary monks (四類聖凡僧 [si lei sheng fan seng]),
Benefit and bring joy to sentient beings without a moment's rest,
Called a good field of blessings (良福田 [liang fu tian]) in the world,
This is the great kindness and virtue of the Sangha Jewel (僧寶 [seng bao]).
As I have spoken of the meaning of the Four Kinds of Kindness (四恩 [si en]),
This is what creates the causes in the world,
All things arise from this,
Without the Four Kinds of Kindness (四恩 [si en]), they cannot exist.
For example, all form-dusts in the world,
Can be created by the four great elements (四大 [si da]) and arise.
The sentient world is also like this,
Established by those Four Kinds of Kindness (四恩 [si en])."

 世間大地稱為重,  悲母恩重過於彼;
 世間須彌稱為高,  悲母恩高過於彼;
 母在之時為日中,  悲母亡時為日沒;
 世間所有勝妙華,  依王福力而開敷;
 世間所有妙園林,  依王福力皆滋茂;
 世間所有諸藥草,  依王福力差諸疾;
 世間百穀及苗稼,  依王福力皆成實;
 請我釋迦牟尼佛,  當為菩薩戒和上;
 龍種淨智尊王佛,  當為淨戒阿闍梨;
 未來導師彌勒佛,  當為清淨教授師;
 現在十方兩足尊,  當為清淨證戒師;
 十方一切諸菩薩,  當為修學戒伴侶;
 如是三聚清淨戒,  三世如來所護念;
 超越生死深大海,  菩薩淨戒為船筏;
 永斷貪瞋癡繫縛,  菩薩淨戒為利劍;
 生死嶮道諸怖畏,  菩薩淨戒為舍宅;
 息除貧賤諸苦因,  淨戒能為如意寶;
 人天為王得自在,  三聚淨戒作良緣;
 法寶能摧生死獄,  猶如金剛碎萬物;
 法寶能照眾生心,  如日天子臨空界;
 法寶能作堅牢船,  能渡愛河超彼岸;
 法寶能與眾生樂,  譬如天鼓應天心;
 法寶能濟眾生貧,  如摩尼珠雨眾寶;
 法寶能為三寶階,  聞法修因生上界;
 法寶金輪大聖王,  以大法力破四魔;
 法寶能為大寶車,  能運眾生出火宅;
 法寶能為大導師,  能引眾生至寶所;
 法寶能吹大法螺,  覺悟眾生成佛道;
 法寶能為大法燈,  能照生死諸黑闇;

[0306a22] At that time, Zhiguang (智光 [zhi guang]) the Elder and his sons, having heard the Buddha's discourse on the Four Great Kinds of Kindness (四種大恩 [si zhong da en]), gained what they had never had before, and joyfully put their palms together and said to the Buddha: "Excellent, excellent! Greatly compassionate World-Honored One! For the sentient beings in this defiled and evil age who do not believe in cause and effect, are unfilial to their parents, and hold heretical views, you have proclaimed the truly wondrous Dharma that benefits and brings joy to the world. We only pray, O World-Honored One! Speak of the meaning of requiting kindness. Having understood the profound Four Kinds of Kindness (甚深四恩 [shen shen si en]), we now do not know what good karma to cultivate to requite this kindness?"

[0306a22] ěr shí, zhì guāng zhǎng zhě jí zhū zi děng, wén fú suǒ shuō sì zhǒng dà ēn, dé wèi céng yǒu, huān xǐ hé zhǎng, ér bái fú yán: “shàn zāi, shàn zāi! dà cí shì zūn! wèi zhuó è shì bù xìn yīn guǒ,, bù xiào fù mǔ,, xié jiàn zhòng shēng, shuō zhēn miào fǎ lì lè shì jiān. wéi yuàn shì zūn! shuō bào ēn yì, wǒ děng jì wù shén shēn sì ēn, ér jīn wèi zhī xiū hé shàn yè ér bào shì ēn?”

[0306a22] er shi, zhi guang zhang zhe ji zhu zi deng, wen fu suo shuo si zhong da en, de wei ceng you, huan xi he zhang, er bai fu yan: "shan zai, shan zai! da ci shi zun! wei zhuo e shi bu xin yin guo,, bu xiao fu mu,, xie jian zhong sheng, shuo zhen miao fa li le shi jian. wei yuan shi zun! shuo bao en yi, wo deng ji wu shen shen si en, er jin wei zhi xiu he shan ye er bao shi en?"

[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]

[0306a27] The Buddha said to the Elder: "Good men! I have already extensively explained this to the five hundred elders (五百長者 [wu bai zhang zhe]), and now I will briefly explain a small part to you. If a good man or good woman diligently cultivates the Ten Paramitas (十波羅蜜 [shi bo luo mi]) to attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, whatever they gain is not yet called requiting kindness; if a person can practice one good deed for a moment, and their mind has no attainment, then it is called requiting kindness. Why is that? All Tathagatas attain Buddhahood and transform sentient beings by having no attainment (無所得 [wu suo de]). If there are pure-minded good men and women who hear this sutra, believe, understand, accept, uphold, explain, and transcribe it, and with the three wheels of no attainment (三輪體空 [san lun ti kong]), secretly teach the four-line verse Dharma (四句法 [si ju fa]) to a single person, eliminating their heretical views and leading them to Bodhi, this is called requiting the Four Kinds of Kindness (四恩 [si en]). Why? This person will attain supreme Bodhi (無上菩提 [wu shang pu ti]), and in turn, teach and transform countless sentient beings to enter the Buddha path, so that the seeds of the Three Jewels (三寶 [san bao]) will never be severed."

[0306b09] At that time, when Zhiguang (智光 [zhi guang]) the Elder heard this verse, he attained the Patience Samadhi (忍辱三昧 [ren ru san mei]), became averse to the world, and attained non-regression. At that time, eight thousand (八千 [ba qian]) of his sons also attained this samadhi, and all aroused the supreme Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi mind (無等等阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心 [wu deng deng a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti xin]). Forty-eight thousand (四萬八千 [si wan ba qian]) people also attained samadhi, removed defilements and impurities, and gained the pure Dharma eye (法眼淨 [fa yan jing]).
