At that time, the Brahmin Haiji (海濟婆羅門 [hai ji po luo men]) had this thought: 'I have already converted hundreds of thousands of crores of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of sentient beings to Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]). There is no one in this great assembly who has not been converted. These Mahāsattvas (摩訶薩 [mo he sa]) have each made wonderful vows to attain pure Buddha-lands, except for Pīyūpaviṣṇu (披由毘師紐 [pi you pi shi niu]) and those in the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]) who also avoid the evil age. I think I should offer the taste of Dharma to sentient beings in the evil age. I should be firm and brave, and I should roar like a lion in this way, so that all these Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) in this great assembly attain what they have never had. Furthermore, all the great assembly of devas (天 [tian]), nāgas (龍 [long]), yakṣas (夜叉 [ye cha]), gandharvas (乾闥婆 [gan ta po]), asuras (阿修羅 [a xiu luo]), and humans should all respectfully prostrate themselves before me. May the World-Honored Buddha (佛世尊 [fu shi zun]) praise me and bestow upon me a prophecy. Also, in the immeasurable, boundless asaṃkhyeya (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) worlds in the ten directions, may the World-Honored Buddhas (諸佛世尊 [zhu fu shi zun]) who are presently abiding and expounding the Dharma for sentient beings, when I roar like a lion, may those Buddhas praise me and also bestow upon me a prophecy of Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]). May they send envoys to comfort me, and may this great assembly see and hear those envoys. I shall establish the eye of vows for great compassionate Bodhisattvas for future generations. May those who hear my vows, even up to the time I attain Bodhi, also attain what they have never had. Furthermore, for future Bodhisattvas who possess great compassion, may they take the Bodhi vow in a defiled Buddha-land during the great evil age, when the Dharma is scarce and darkness prevails, and sentient beings are afflicted by illness and are adrift. May I rescue them and perform the work of a Buddha, expounding the Dharma for sentient beings. Even after my parinirvāṇa (般涅槃 [ban nie pan]), through inconceivable and immeasurable, boundless Buddha-lands, may all the World-Honored Buddhas (諸佛世尊 [zhu fu shi zun]) praise and extol me before the assembly of Bodhisattvas, and expound my eye of vows to those Bodhisattvas. May those Bodhisattvas receive the power of great compassion, and may those who hear my vows attain what they have never had, and also arouse great compassion for sentient beings. May they take the Bodhi vow in the same way as I take my vow today, without any difference. May they also achieve Samyak-saṃbodhi (三菩提 [san pu ti]) in a defiled land; may they rescue all beings from the four great currents, and convert sentient beings with the Three Vehicles, leading them even to the path of nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]).'

At that time, the great national master, the Brahmin Haiji (國大師海濟婆羅門 [guo da shi hai ji po luo men]), having cultivated such great compassionate vows, straightened his robes, bared his right shoulder, and went to the presence of Ratnākara Tathāgata (寶藏如來 [bao cang ru lai]). Immediately, hundreds of thousands of crores of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of devas (天 [tian]) in the sky played crores of divine musical instruments and rained down various heavenly flowers, praising in unison: 'Excellent, excellent! Brave man! Go to the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) now and take your wonderful vows, extinguishing the suffering of defilements of sentient beings in the world with the water of wisdom.' The entire assembly clasped their hands towards him, praising in unison: 'Excellent, excellent! Your wonderful wisdom benefits us, and we wish to hear your wonderful and firm vows.'

[0264c09] "Then the great master arrived at the World-Honored One's (世尊 [shi zun]) presence, knelt on his right knee, and immediately the Trisāhasra-mahāsāhasra-lokadhātu (三千大千耐提蘭佛剎 [san qian da qian nai ti lan fu sha]) (three thousand great thousand Buddha-lands) trembled in six ways with a great tremor, shaking violently, surging and sinking. Bells, conchs, and drums resounded naturally, and birds and beasts emitted soft sounds. All the withered trees in the world bloomed with flowers and leaves. In this Trisāhasra-mahāsāhasra-lokadhātu (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), the earth-dwelling bhūtas (鬼神 [gui shen]), some encouraged to Bodhi and some not, excluding those in hell, hungry ghosts, and various animals, all became filled with beneficial minds, good minds, minds free from enmity and jealousy, pure minds, compassionate minds, and unprecedented minds. Those who dwell in the air rejoiced in their minds in the sky, offering various garlands of flowers, fragrant sounds, precious jewels, banners, canopies, standards, garments, and crowns, with soft voices, as offerings to hear the Brahmin's vows. Even the devas (天 [tian]) up to the Akaniṣṭha (阿迦尼吒 [a jia ni zha]) heaven all descended to Jambudvīpa (閻浮提 [yan fu ti]) and dwelled in the sky, holding various heavenly incenses and even crowns, offering them to hear the Brahmin's vows.

[0264c21] "At that time, the Brahmin clasped his hands together and praised Ratnākara Tathāgata (寶藏如來 [bao cang ru lai]) with verses:
"'The Venerable One (尊 [zun]) roams in samādhi (三昧 [san mei]) like Brahmā (梵王 [fan wang]),
With a serene countenance like Indra (帝釋 [di shi]);
Dispensing wealth like a monarch,
Holding the most exquisite jewels like an Immortal Venerable One (仙尊 [xian zun]);
His virtue-moistened roar like a lion,
Firm and unmoving like Sumera (須彌 [xu mi]);
Devoid of anger like the great ocean,
Enduring good and evil equally like the earth;
Cleansing all defilements like great waters,
Burning all forests of defilements like immortal fire;
Untainted like a swift wind,
Revealing reality like a great deva (大天 [da tian]);
The Muni (牟尼 [mou ni]) pours forth Dharma like dragon rain,
Nourishing the world like timely moisture;
Subduing external paths like a debater,
The Immortal One (仙 [xian]) emits virtuous fragrance like a wonderful flower;
His wonderful voice soft like Brahmā (梵王 [fan wang]),
Healing the world and delivering from suffering like a good physician;
His mind dwells in equality like a compassionate mother,
Always embracing sentient beings like a father;
Shattering all strong enemies like a vajra (金剛 [jin gang]),
Severing branches of attachment like a divine sword;
Rescuing sentient beings like a boatman,
Bestowing wisdom like a Muni (牟尼 [mou ni]);
Granting cool light like the Muni-moon (牟尼月 [mou ni yue]),
Opening the human flowers like the sun;
Granting the four supreme fruits like a wonderful tree,
Encircled by immortal assemblies like a king of birds;
The Venerable One's (尊 [zun]) mind is vast like the great ocean,
Treating the world equally like grass and trees;
Contemplating the nature of all phenomena like an empty scroll,
The Venerable One (尊 [zun]) adapts to the world like water;
The Buddha (佛 [fu]) bestows Bodhi prophecies upon many assemblies,
Possessing the most wonderful marks and great compassion;
I have converted immeasurable sentient beings,
May I now be prophesied to Bodhi;
Attaining Buddhahood in the turbulent and hateful age,
Placing sentient beings on the path of tranquility.'
[0264c21] “爾時婆羅門叉手合掌,以偈讚歎寶藏如來言:
“ ‘尊遊三昧如梵王, 顏色從容猶帝釋;
施與錢財如國主, 持最妙寶若仙尊;
德濡吼音如師子, 堅固不動喻須彌;
無有怒恚如大海, 含忍好惡等如地;
除一切垢如大水, 燒諸結林如仙火;
無所染著猶疾風, 開現真實如大天;
牟尼澍法如龍雨, 充濟世間猶時澤;
降伏外道如論師, 仙放德香如妙花;
妙聲柔軟如梵王, 治世脫苦如良醫;
心住平等如慈母, 常攝眾生喻如父;
破諸堅怨如金剛, 斷恩愛枝如神劍;
濟度眾生如船師, 施人智慧如牟尼;
施涼光如牟尼月, 開敷人花猶如日;
施四上果如妙樹, 仙眾圍遶如鳥王;

After the great national master, the Brahmin Haiji (國大師海濟婆羅門 [guo da shi hai ji po luo men]), praised Ratnākara Tathāgata (寶藏如來 [bao cang ru lai]) with these verses, immediately all the great assembly of devas (天 [tian]), nāgas (龍 [long]), yakṣas (夜叉 [ye cha]), gandharvas (乾闥婆 [gan ta po]), and humans exclaimed, 'Excellent!' Then the great national master said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! I have converted hundreds of thousands of crores of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of sentient beings to Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]). Each of them, after contemplation, has received a wonderful land and taken a pure intention. They have planted various good roots and are easy to convert. These thousands of Caturmāṇa (四月鬘 [si yue man]) and others, who have mastered the four Vedas (鞞陀羅 [bing tuo luo]) and whom the Tathāgata (如來 [ru lai]) will prophesy to in the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]), these brave men also teach and convert sentient beings who are greedy, angry, ignorant, and egoistic with the Three Vehicles. They also abandon heavy defilements, the evil age, and unceasing karma, slander the True Dharma, revile the saints, dwell in wrong views, lack the seven sacred qualities, do not know their parents, do not recognize śramaṇas (沙門 [sha men]), do not distinguish Brahmins (婆羅門 [po luo men]), do not know how to repay kindness, do not know merit, do not fear future lives, do not seek the virtues of the three good heavenly beings, commit the ten evil deeds of the three unwholesome actions, are abandoned by all good spiritual friends, are ridiculed by all wise people, are swept away by the swift waters of the defilements of the three realms, burned in the river of saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]) ashes, obscured by ignorance, separated from all good deeds, abandoning those sentient beings and placing them in a land without a Buddha, separated from all good roots and accumulating unwholesome roots, distressed on wrong paths in the great wilderness. At that time, the people in the Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) world during the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]) will have a lifespan of a thousand years, and they will be abandoned by these wise and good men. At that time, being oppressed by the causes and conditions of saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]) in the three realms, having no refuge, no destination, no one to rely on, afflicted by suffering; abandoning these sentient beings, each taking a wonderful land with an easily converted pure intention, planting various good roots, diligently and tirelessly cultivating, having previously associated with and made offerings to many Buddhas, thereby converting them. World-Honored One! Is this not so?' Ratnākara Tathāgata (寶藏如來 [bao cang ru lai]) said to him: 'So it is, so it is! Brahmin! Just as those sentient beings have made vows to attain a Buddha-land adorned as they desire, I shall likewise bestow upon them prophecies.'

[0265b07] "The Brahmin said: 'World-Honored One! My mind trembles like a banana leaf, filled with great worry, and my whole body is numb. World-Honored One! All these great Bodhisattvas (大菩薩 [da pu sa]) have aroused great compassion, yet they abandon that time when the evil age is rampant, and sentient beings are in darkness, all abandoned. World-Honored One! In the future, after one asaṃkhyeya (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) of Gaṅgā (恒河 [heng he]) sands, two asaṃkhyeyas (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) of Gaṅgā (恒河 [heng he]) sands, and three asaṃkhyeyas (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) of Gaṅgā (恒河 [heng he]) sands, during the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]), when human life span is a thousand years, I will be able to dwell in saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]) and practice the Bodhisattva path. I will not rely on the power of vows to deliver sentient beings, but will practice the Six Pāramitās (波羅蜜 [bo luo mi]) to convert them. I have heard from the Buddha that being able to abandon and give material things is Dāna-pāramitā (檀波羅蜜 [tan bo luo mi]). I will practice Dāna-pāramitā (檀波羅蜜 [tan bo luo mi]) in this way. Wherever I am born, if there are those who seek, I will give to them, namely: food, khādya (佉闍 [qu du]), bhojya (蒱闍 [pu du]), sara (螺夜 [luo ye]), leha (梨舍 [li she]), clothes, bedding, gardens, houses, garlands, scented ointments, medicine according to illness, banners, canopies, money, elephants, horses, carriages, gold, silver, various jewels, maṇi (摩尼 [mo ni]), pearls, vaidūrya (琉璃 [liu li]), kārkeṭana (砗磲 [che qu]), agate, coral, amber, rose quartz, and other treasures. With compassion for sentient beings, I will give such things with joy, without expecting rewards, solely for the sake of embracing and delivering sentient beings. Furthermore, if there are sentient beings who seek extremely difficult things to abandon, I will give them, namely: male and female servants, villages, cities, palaces, royal positions, wives and concubines, sons and daughters, and even hands, feet, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, flesh, bones, marrow, body and life, even if they ask for my head. With compassion for sentient beings, I will give such things with extreme joy, without seeking rewards, solely for the sake of embracing and delivering them. There has never been a Bodhisattva practicing Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]) who could practice Dāna-pāramitā (檀波羅蜜 [tan bo luo mi]) in this way, nor will there be a Bodhisattva practicing Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]) who can make such great offerings as I do wherever I am born, for immeasurable asaṃkhyeya (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) crores of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of hundreds of thousands of kalpas, practicing Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]) and practicing Dāna-pāramitā (檀波羅蜜 [tan bo luo mi]). I will establish the eye of merit and light of giving for future Bodhisattvas who possess great compassion, contemplating all defilements. This is Śīla-pāramitā (尸羅波羅蜜 [shi luo bo luo mi]). I will practice Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]) in this way, practicing various precepts. I will practice unsurpassed difficult asceticism as previously described, without falling into states, contemplating selflessness. This is Kṣānti-pāramitā (羼提波羅蜜 [chan ti bo luo mi]). I will practice Kṣānti (羼提 [chan ti]) in this way, as previously described. Furthermore, being weary of all conditioned phenomena, all unconditioned stillness and unsurpassed practice without regression, this is Vīrya-pāramitā (毘梨耶波羅蜜 [pi li ye bo luo mi]). In all actions, practicing equanimity and emptiness, this is Dhyāna-pāramitā (禪那波羅蜜 [chan na bo luo mi]). As for the nature of unborn phenomena and forbearance, this is Prajñā-pāramitā (般若波羅蜜 [ban ruo bo luo mi]). I will be firm and brave in this way, practicing Prajñā-pāramitā (般若波羅蜜 [ban ruo bo luo mi]) for immeasurable asaṃkhyeya (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) crores of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of hundreds of thousands of kalpas. There has never been a Bodhisattva practicing Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]) who could practice Prajñā-pāramitā (般若波羅蜜 [ban ruo bo luo mi]) with such firm bravery as I do, nor will there be a Bodhisattva practicing Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]) who can practice Prajñā-pāramitā (般若波羅蜜 [ban ruo bo luo mi]) with such firm bravery as I do, establishing the eye of wisdom and merit for future Bodhisattvas who possess great compassion. My initial aspiration is to manifest great compassion for future Bodhisattvas, up to unsurpassed parinirvāṇa (般涅槃 [ban nie pan]). May those Bodhisattvas attain what they have never had. Therefore, I will not lightly practice giving, precepts, unsupported forbearance, unconditioned vigor, non-abiding meditation, unattached wisdom, non-duality, or seek rewards. For sentient beings who lack the seven sacred qualities, who are abandoned and placed in a land without a Buddha, who commit unceasing karma, slander the True Dharma, revile the saints, are all of wrong views, accumulate unwholesome roots and fall into the wilderness, distressed by these wrong paths, I will practice the Pāramitās (波羅蜜 [bo luo mi]) with extreme vigor. For the sake of planting good roots for each sentient being, I can endure the suffering of the Avīci (阿鼻 [a bi]) hell for ten great kalpas. Similarly, for animals, hungry ghosts, yakṣas (夜叉 [ye cha]), and the poor among humans, I can endure such suffering. As for all sentient beings for whom good roots are planted, I will embrace and deliver those whose minds are weary and withered, up to the end of the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]). I do not seek the blessings of human and heavenly honor and gain, except for being a Bodhisattva in his last existence, waiting in Tuṣita (兜率 [dou lu]) heaven to attain Bodhi.

[0265c29] "'During that time, while in saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]), I will draw near to Buddhas (佛 [fu]) as numerous as the dust particles in a Buddha-land, and offer various offerings to each Buddha (佛 [fu]) as numerous as the dust particles in a Buddha-land. From each Buddha (佛 [fu]), I will obtain merits as numerous as the dust particles in a Buddha-land, and persuade sentient beings as numerous as the dust particles in a Buddha-land to Bodhi. The Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) vehicle and the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]) will be likewise; I will persuade and convert them according to their desires. If there is no Buddha (佛 [fu]) in the world, I will become an ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]), and convert those sentient beings with various good deeds, causing them to dwell in supernatural powers. For those who worship Maheśvara (摩醯首羅天 [mo xi shou luo tian]) due to wrong views, I will manifest as Maheśvara (摩醯首羅天 [mo xi shou luo tian]) and persuade them to good deeds. I will manifest as Nārāyaṇa (那羅延 [na luo yan]), the sun and moon, and even as Brahmā (梵天 [fan tian]), persuading them to good Dharma. Or I will manifest as Garuḍa (迦樓羅 [jia lou luo]), persuading Garuḍa (迦樓羅鳥 [jia lou luo niao]) birds to cultivate good practices, and even manifest as a rabbit, feeding hungry and thirsty sentient beings with my own flesh and blood, and saving all sentient beings in distress with my own life. World-Honored One! At that time, I will cultivate various difficult practices with extreme vigor, for those whose minds are withered and lack good roots. At that time, for the sake of sentient beings, I will endure various sufferings in saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]), until after one asaṃkhyeya (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) of Gaṅgā (恒河 [heng he]) sands, two asaṃkhyeyas (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) of Gaṅgā (恒河 [heng he]) sands, and more, I will first enter the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]). When Candramāla Kumāra (月鬘童子 [yue man tong zi]) attains Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]) and is known as Krakucchanda Tathāgata (迦羅迦孫陀如來 [jia luo jia sun tuo ru lai]). At that time, may I, with the eye of holy wisdom, see the World-Honored Buddhas (諸佛世尊 [zhu fu shi zun]) who have already turned the wheel of Dharma and are presently abiding in the ten directions, in worlds as numerous as the dust particles in a thousand Buddha-lands. These are the sentient beings whom I had previously persuaded, whose minds were withered, who had accumulated unwholesome roots, lacked the seven sacred qualities, were abandoned by all in empty Buddha-lands, committed unceasing karma, slandered the True Dharma, reviled the saints, and were distressed by wrong paths in the great wilderness. I had previously praised Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]) to them and persuaded them to Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]), causing them to dwell therein. These sentient beings are those whom I had previously persuaded to dwell in Dāna-pāramitā (檀波羅蜜 [tan bo luo mi]) and even Prajñā-pāramitā (般若波羅蜜 [ban ruo bo luo mi]). These sentient beings are those for whom I had planted the seeds of unsurpassed nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]), who were pulled out of evil destinies; may they be established with wisdom and merit, and brought to the World-Honored Buddhas (諸佛世尊 [zhu fu shi zun]) who are presently abiding, and receive the prophecy of Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]), attain samādhi-dhāraṇī-kṣānti (三昧陀羅尼忍辱 [san mei tuo luo ni ren ru]), and ascend the Bodhisattva stages. These sentient beings are those whom I had previously persuaded and taught to take vows to attain adorned Buddha-lands, and those who desire to attain adorned Buddha-lands according to their wishes.

Soon after Krakucchanda Tathāgata (迦羅迦孫陀如來 [jia luo jia sun tuo ru lai]), the Arhat (應供 [ying gong]), the Perfectly Enlightened One (正遍知 [zheng bian zhi]), attained Buddhahood, I will go to him, offer various offerings, ask for guidance, renounce the world, observe precepts, be learned, practice samādhi (三昧 [san mei]), and be foremost in expounding the Dharma, second only to the Tathāgata (如來 [ru lai]). At that time, for those sentient beings whose minds are withered, who have accumulated unwholesome roots, are immersed in wrong views, commit unceasing karma, and are distressed in the wilderness by wrong paths, I will embrace them and expound the Dharma to them. After the holy sun sets, I will perform the work of a Buddha completely. Similarly, soon after Kanakamuni Kāśyapa (迦那迦牟尼迦葉 [jia na jia mou ni jia ye]) attains Buddhahood, I will go to him and perform the work of a Buddha completely, and so on, until the people of the thousand-year age are established in the three meritorious grounds. After that, they will be born in the heavens, and I will expound the Dharma to the devas (天 [tian]) and embrace them. Even when sentient beings live for a hundred and twenty years, are extremely ignorant, arrogant, relying on their appearance, relying on their lineage, ignorant and deluded, full of jealousy and anger, dwelling in the darkness of the five defilements; these sentient beings are heavily afflicted by greed, anger, and ignorance, arrogance, jealousy, clinging to wrong Dharma, living by wrong Dharma, holding wrong and inverted views, lacking the seven sacred qualities; they are not mothers, not fathers, not śramaṇas (沙門 [sha men]), not Brahmins (婆羅門 [po luo men]), do not know kindness, do not perform meritorious deeds; they do not fear future lives, do not cultivate the three meritorious grounds, do not seek the Three Vehicles, do not cultivate the three wholesome karmas but cultivate the three unwholesome karmas, do not cultivate the ten wholesome karmas but enjoy cultivating the ten unwholesome ones; they are afflicted by the four inversions, dwell in the four transformations, follow the four māras (魔 [mo]), are swept away by the four rivers of illness; they are constantly deluded by the five obscurations and six senses, immersed in the wilderness of the eight wrong paths, constantly giving rise to defilements, not seeking the blessings of devas (天人 [tian ren]); they are distressed by inverted views and wrong paths, commit unceasing karma, slander the True Dharma, revile the saints, are separated from all good roots, are stubborn and rough, do not know gratitude; whatever they do, they soon forget, and if they see someone cultivating good, they speak ill of them with malicious intent, having shallow wisdom, little learning, poor memory, incomplete faculties, emaciated and weak, lacking clothing; they associate with evil friends, have deluded thoughts in the womb, are afflicted by many diseases, have ugly appearances, disregard the past and future, have no shame, and are full of fear; in a short mealtime, their body, speech, and mind commit many evil deeds, and they value these. These sentient beings are abandoned by all Sarvajñas (薩婆若 [sa po ruo]) and dwell in Buddha-lands without a Buddha, meaning there is no giving, no observance of precepts, no cultivation of meditation, no good karma, but instead, they accumulate all unwholesome phenomena. I will deliver them across the ocean of saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]) with the Eightfold Noble Path and place them in the city of fearlessness. At that time, due to the heavy evil karma of sentient beings, the Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) Buddha-land will become extremely vile, abandoned by those who have planted good roots and accumulated merit. Everywhere, the ground will be saline, with rubble, earth, stones, and mountains, uneven and rough, filled with many poisonous insects, mosquitoes, fierce snakes, birds, and beasts. At that time, abnormal winds will arise, and foul, coarse, and impure torrential rains will fall. Disastrous hail, mixed with poison and bitter salt, will descend. The earth will produce such evil grasses and trees, whose branches, leaves, flowers, fruits, and various grains and flavors, when consumed by sentient beings as nourishment, will all increase their coarseness, wickedness, killing, harming, and deceit. They will spread rumors and gossip, be disrespectful to each other, generate fear, mutual hatred, and desire to harm each other. They will drink blood and eat flesh, wear skins, enjoy wielding weapons, injuring, killing, and harming. They will rely on their appearance, lineage, wealth, and external scriptures, ride horses, draw bows, and engage in mass battles, full of jealousy and arrogance, diligently cultivating various base and despicable things. This will be a world of suffering and difficulty.

[0267a08] "'At that time, I will descend from Tuṣita (兜率 [dou lu]) heaven and reside in the womb of the foremost lady of the most excellent Cakravartin (轉輪王 [zhuan lun wang]) lineage, for the sake of delivering sentient beings and ripening their good roots. At that time, I will emit a pure light that pervades the entire Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) Buddha-land, reaching up to the Akaniṣṭha (阿迦尼吒 [a jia ni zha]) heaven and down to the Golden Wheel, the wonderful light spreading everywhere. At that time, sentient beings born in the Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) Buddha-land, whether in hell, as animals, as hungry ghosts, in heaven, or among humans, in the Form Realm, Formless Realm, Realm of Neither Perception Nor Non-Perception, will all perceive this light and feel its touch on their bodies, causing them to renounce the suffering of saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]) and joyfully seek nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]), even to the point of dwelling in the mind of extinguishing defilements, which is the initial stage of the nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]) path. I will attain the samādhi (三昧 [san mei]) of definite understanding of all phenomena, and the samādhi (三昧 [san mei]) of the single Dharma-gate, dwelling in my mother's womb for ten months. When I am born after ten months, with the samādhi (三昧 [san mei]) of accumulating all merits, the Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) Buddha-land will be shaken in six ways, up to the Akaniṣṭha (阿迦尼吒 [a jia ni zha]) heaven and down to the Golden Wheel, all will tremble. At that time, sentient beings born in the Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) Buddha-land, whether in hell or among humans, will all be awakened. I will emerge from my mother's right side, and again universally illuminate the Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) Buddha-land with wonderful light, without omission. At that time, I will again awaken all sentient beings in the Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) Buddha-land, planting the seeds of nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]) in those who have not yet planted them, and generating the vow to attain it in those who have already planted the seeds of nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]). When my feet touch the ground, may this Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) Buddha-land be shaken in six ways, surging and sinking even to the Golden Wheel. At that time, sentient beings who rely on water, earth, air, the four modes of birth, or the five destinies, I will awaken them; those who have not yet sprouted the sprout of vows, I will cause them to sprout; those who have already sprouted the sprout of vows, I will cause them to dwell in the Three Vehicles and attain non-retrogression. When I am born, may the great Brahmā (大梵 [da fan]), Māra (魔王 [mo wang]), Indra (帝釋 [di shi]), the sun and moon, the World Guardians (Lokapālas), nāga (龍 [long]) kings, asuras (阿修羅 [a xiu luo]) of great might generated by transformation, yakṣas (夜叉 [ye cha]), rākṣasas (羅剎 [luo sha]), nāgas (龍 [long]), and asuras (修羅 [xiu luo]), may all of them come to make offerings to me. May I, immediately upon birth, take seven steps. I will expound the Dharma with the samādhi (三昧 [san mei]) of accumulating all merits, causing that great assembly to dwell in the Three Vehicles. Among that great assembly, those who seek the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]) will dwell in their last existence, and I will deliver them. Those sentient beings who seek the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) vehicle, may all of them attain the illumination of the flower of forbearance. Those sentient beings who seek the unsurpassed Mahāyāna (大乘 [da cheng]), may all of them attain the Vajra-dharā-samudrācalā-samādhi (金剛持海不動三昧 [jin gang chi hai bu dong san mei]), and by this samādhi (三昧 [san mei]), they will ascend to the third stage. When I wish to bathe, may the most excellent nāga (龍 [long]) kings come and bathe me. To subdue various external schools—Nirgrantha (尼乾陀 [ni gan tuo]), Caraka (遮羅迦 [zhe luo jia]), Pāli (彼利 [bi li]), Parivrājaka (波羅闍迦 [bo luo du jia])—I will discard their coarse clothing and seek proper Dharma robes, proceeding to the Bodhi tree. For sentient beings who see me going to the Bodhi tree, I will, with the samādhi (三昧 [san mei]) of accumulating all merits, expound the Dharma to them in such a way as to cause all of them to diligently seek the Three Vehicles. For those sentient beings who have planted the seeds of the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞種 [sheng wen zhong]), may all their defilements ripen, and may they dwell in their last existence and be delivered by me. For external practitioners of coarse and difficult asceticism in the four continents, may devas (天 [tian]) and non-human beings proclaim to them: "Your asceticism yields no great reward, nor is it unprecedented. The asceticism practiced by the Bodhisattva who dwells in his last existence in this place, entering this dhyāna (禪 [chan]) and abandoning the activities of the mind, freeing himself from bodily activities, eliminating the activities of speech and breathing, rising from dhyāna (禪 [chan]) once a day and eating half sesame seeds, this asceticism yields immense fruit. It is vast and wide, and he will soon attain Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿訷多羅三藐三菩提 [a shen duo luo san miao san pu ti]). If you do not believe, you can go and observe for yourselves." May all of them abandon their difficult asceticism and come to see my asceticism. For those who have planted the seeds of the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]), it is as previously described. If there are human kings, their ministers, officials, and other common people who are householders and engage in household affairs, may all of them come to my place and witness my asceticism. For those who seek the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]), it is as previously described. If there are women who come to see me, may this be their last female body and may they not be reborn as such. For those who seek the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]), it is as previously described. If there are animals who see me sitting and practicing asceticism, may this be their last animal body and may they not be reborn as such. For those animals who have planted the seeds of the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]), may they be reborn once and be delivered by me. For those who seek the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) vehicle, it is as previously described. Various animals will speak in this way, and hungry ghosts will also speak in this way.

I will cultivate such asceticism, planting immeasurable asaṃkhyeya (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) seeds of liberation in them. No sentient beings, whether external practitioners, Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]), Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛乘 [pi zhi fu cheng]), or unsurpassed Mahāyāna (無上大乘 [wu shang da cheng]), have been able to practice such asceticism before, nor will there be any sentient beings, whether external practitioners or up to the Mahāyāna (大乘 [da cheng]), who can practice such asceticism as I do. Before I attain Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]), I will perform the actions of a great man, subduing the retinue of Māra (魔 [mo]), destroying the defilements of Māra (魔 [mo]) while retaining residual karmic retribution, and attain Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]). In doing so, I will cause one sentient being to attain Arhatship (阿羅漢 [a luo han]), and similarly, two sentient beings to attain Arhatship (阿羅漢 [a luo han]) through two teachings, and so on, the third and fourth teachings will cause Arhatship (阿羅漢 [a luo han]). For the sake of two sentient beings, I will manifest hundreds of thousands of supernatural powers, causing them to dwell in right view and expound thousands of Dharma teachings, complete in meaning and words, according to the fruit they are to attain. The mountain of sentient beings' defilements is like vajra (金剛 [jin gang]), and I must shatter it with the vajra (金剛 [jin gang]) pestle of wisdom, expounding the Three Vehicles' Dharma. For the sake of each sentient being, I will walk hundreds of yojanas (由旬 [you xun]) step by step, expounding the Dharma to them and placing them on the path of fearlessness. May my Dharma allow renunciation without hindrance, even for the weak, the feeble, the forgetful, the insane, the stubborn, the arrogant, the unwise, the heavily defiled, the agitated, and women, enabling them to receive full ordination in my Dharma. May I have four assemblies: bhikṣus (比丘 [bi qiu]), bhikṣuṇīs (比丘尼 [bi qiu ni]), upāsakas (優婆塞 [you po sai]), and upāsikās (優婆夷 [you po yi]). May my Dharma have many? May devas (天 [tian]) perceive the Truth, yakṣas (夜叉 [ye cha]), nāgas (龍 [long]), asuras (阿修羅 [a xiu luo]) possess the eight sacred boundaries, and even animals cultivate pure conduct.

After I attain Bodhi, if sentient beings who previously harbored resentment against me come to me with killing implements, various weapons, harsh words and insults, poisoned food and drink, and cause my body to bleed, I will, with great compassionate, pure, and soft speech, like the sound of bells, drums, and thunder, expound the Dharma to them, teaching precepts, learning, samādhi (三昧 [san mei]), and pure mind, causing them to dwell in wholesomeness, repent their evil deeds, and attain pure precepts. May those sentient beings not lose the fruit of liberation, be free from outflows of desire, and be liberated from the karmic retribution of obstacles. I will send these transformed Buddhas to empty Buddha-lands, and also to non-empty places, and also to the Buddha-lands of the five defilements. In those lands, for sentient beings who commit unceasing karma, slander the True Dharma, revile the saints, and accumulate unwholesome roots; among them, those who seek the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]), those who seek the Pratyekabuddha (緣覺乘 [yuan jue cheng]) vehicle, and those who seek the Mahāyāna (大乘 [da cheng]), those who are deficient in precepts and not complete in deportment, who commit root offenses, whose minds are withered and who have lost the path of good and fallen into the wilderness of saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]), who are distressed by wrong paths and immersed in the wilderness; may each transformed Buddha expound the Dharma to hundreds of thousands of crores of nayutas (那由他 [na you ta]) of such sentient beings daily, according to their needs. If, when those sentient beings are about to die, I do not appear before them, do not expound the Dharma to them, or do not generate good thoughts, may I not attain Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]). After those sentient beings die, if they fall into evil destinies or are not born in my land but receive a human body, may I forget all True Dharma and not appear before them, and may I be unable to fully accomplish the work of a Buddha. For sentient beings who worship Nārāyaṇa (那羅延 [na luo yan]), even after their lives end, if they fall into evil destinies, may I also be unable to fully accomplish the work of a Buddha. After I attain Bodhi, in all Buddha-lands, for those who commit unceasing karma, and are distressed by wrong paths and fall into the wilderness, may they be born in my land after death. Their bodies will be like the color of earth, their faces like piśācas (毘舍遮 [pi she zhe]); they will be forgetful, frequently erring, breaking precepts, foul-smelling, often sick, short-lived, and lacking in all necessities. Since the lifespan of these sentient beings is short, for their sake, I will descend from Tuṣita (兜率 [dou lu]) heaven into a mother's womb in as many four continents of the Sāha (娑訶 [suo he]) world as there are, manifesting birth. Briefly, I will manifest childish play, various arts, asceticism, subduing Māra (魔 [mo]), attaining Samyak-saṃbodhi (三菩提 [san pu ti]), turning the wheel of the True Dharma. After fully manifesting and performing the work of a Buddha in all four continents, I will enter parinirvāṇa (般涅槃 [ban nie pan]), even manifesting the distribution of relics.

For sentient beings who seek the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]), I will enable them to understand the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞法藏 [sheng wen fa cang]) Dharma-treasury exposition. For sentient beings who seek the Pratyekabuddha (緣覺乘 [yuan jue cheng]) vehicle, I will enable them to understand the exposition of dependent origination Dharma. For sentient beings who seek the unsurpassed Mahāyāna (無上大乘 [wu shang da cheng]), I will enable them to purely understand the Mahāyāna (摩訶衍 [mo he yan]) exposition. For sentient beings who have not yet perfected merits but wish to seek Bodhi, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of giving. For sentient beings who lack merits and seek heavenly bliss, I will enable them to understand the exposition of precepts. For sentient beings with defiled and evil minds who mutually fear each other, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of loving-kindness. For those who delight in killing, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of compassion. For those with little wisdom who seek light, I will enable them to understand the exposition of dependent origination Dharma. For those with little learning, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of not losing what they have heard and held. For those dwelling in the wilderness of wrong views, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of emptiness. For those afflicted by many thoughts, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of no thoughts. For those afflicted by impure vows, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of no vows. For those whose bodies and minds are impure, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of gentle and harmonious body and mind. For those afflicted by confused conduct, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of not forgetting the Bodhi mind. For those who harbor anger and desire, and commit offenses, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of no resentment. For those afflicted by the cessation of the mind, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of no phenomena. For those with agitated minds, I will enable them to understand the exposition of the Dharma of no jealousy. In short, for those who forget wholesome qualities, I will expound the illumination. For those who commit Māra (魔 [mo]) deeds, I will expound purity. For those immersed in other doctrines, I will expound courageous emergence. For those whose minds are afflicted by various defilements, I will expound separation. For those immersed in wrong paths, I will expound turning back the Dharma. For those with great Mahāyāna (大乘 [da cheng]) aspirations, I will expound non-retrogression. For those who are weary of saṃsāra (生死 [sheng si]), I will expound the joy of Bodhisattvas. For those who do not awaken to the light of the Buddha-Dharma, I will expound the Foremost Banner Vyuha (翅由邏 [chi you luo]). For those who lack great wisdom, I will expound brilliant light. For those afflicted by ignorance and darkness, I will expound the sun-lamp. For those who do not seek endless words, I will expound accomplishment. For those who have not yet attained faith and reverence for the Triple Gem, I will expound the accumulation of merits. For those who are not satisfied with the rain of Dharma gates, I will expound the Dharma cloud. For those who have nihilistic views of the Triple Gem, I will expound adornment with jewels. For those who do not perform actions of wisdom, I will expound non-origination. For those who are bound by all defilements, I will expound the gate of emptiness. May these Bodhisattvas, with a single sound, attain eighty-four thousand Dharma gates, eighty-four thousand samādhis (三昧 [san mei]), and seventy-five thousand dhāraṇīs (陀羅尼 [tuo luo ni]). With these merits, may these Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas (菩薩摩訶薩 [pu sa mo he sa]) adorn themselves with great adornments, inspiring them to make inconceivable and wonderful vows, and adorning themselves with inconceivable knowledge and vision of merits. Furthermore, for sentient beings in other worlds who commit unceasing karma, even those who commit root offenses and whose minds are withered; those who seek the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞乘 [sheng wen cheng]), those who seek the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) vehicle, and those who seek the unsurpassed Mahāyāna (無上大乘 [wu shang da cheng]), will be born in my Buddha-land according to their vows, even if they have accumulated unwholesome roots, are rough and delight in evil, are stubborn and hold inverted views, and do not control their minds. For these eighty-four thousand sentient beings with disturbed minds, I will extensively expound eighty-four thousand sections of Dharma. Among them, for those sentient beings who seek the unsurpassed Mahāyāna (無上大乘 [wu shang da cheng]), I will extensively expound the Dharma of the Six Pāramitās (波羅蜜 [bo luo mi]), extensively expounding Dāna-pāramitā (檀波羅蜜 [tan bo luo mi]), and even extensively expounding Prajñā-pāramitā (般若波羅蜜 [ban ruo bo luo mi]). Among them, for sentient beings who seek the Śrāvakayāna (聲聞 [sheng wen]) or Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) vehicle, who have not planted good roots and seek liberation, I will first establish them in the Three Refuges, and then establish them in the Pāramitās (波羅蜜 [bo luo mi]). For those who delight in killing, I will establish them in non-killing. For those who are heavily greedy, I will establish them in non-stealing. For those who are attached to wrong Dharma, I will establish them in non-sexual misconduct. For those who delight in lying, I will establish them in non-lying. For those who delight in delusion, I will establish them in non-drinking alcohol. For sentient beings who have these five afflictions, I will cause them to abandon these five problems and dwell in the precepts of an upāsaka (優婆塞戒 [you po sai jie]). For sentient beings who do not delight in wholesome Dharma, I will cause them to dwell in the Eightfold Noble Precepts for one day and one night. For those who have a little delight in good roots, I will cause them to approach my Dharma, renounce the world with ten precepts, and dwell in pure conduct. For sentient beings who delight in seeking wholesome Dharma, I will cause them to receive full ordination in wholesome Dharma and completely dwell in pure conduct. For sentient beings who commit unceasing karma, even those who do not control their minds, I will expound the Dharma to them with many different kinds of sentences, meanings, words, and expedient transformations, enduring this fatigue, ultimately placing them in nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]). Even with the power of my vows, I will reduce my five-part lifespan by one. When I am about to enter parinirvāṇa (般涅槃 [ban nie pan]), I will shatter my body relics into pieces as small as half a mustard seed, for the sake of compassionate sentient beings, and then enter nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]). May my True Dharma remain in the world for a thousand years after my parinirvāṇa (般涅槃 [ban nie pan]), and the semblance Dharma remain for another five hundred years.
