This is the Chinese Buddhist Canon known as the Taisho, or more specifically the “Taisho Revised Tripitaka” (Takakusu Junjiro 1988). The collection consists of thousands of scrolls including foundational texts such as Agamas, Mahayana Sutras, Vinaya, Abhidharma, Tantras, Jatakas and Avadanas (former birth stoeries), commentaries, histories, catalog...

Chapter Two: All-Giving

All Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas (菩薩摩訶薩 [pu sa mo he sa]),
For the benefit of sentient beings (為利眾生故 [wei li zhong sheng gu]),
Abandon their own bodies and lives (捨棄己身命 [she qi ji shen ming]),
Like grass, dung, and filth (猶如草糞穢 [you ru cao fen hui]).

 一切諸菩薩,  為利眾生故,

[0055a05] As I once heard:

In the past, there was a king named Yiqieshi (一切施 [yi qie shi]) [All-Giving]. When this king was first born, he spoke to his parents, saying: "I can abandon my precious body and life for all immeasurable sentient beings, let alone other external things and treasures." Therefore, his parents revered and cherished him, naming him Yiqieshi (一切施 [yi qie shi]). From his birth, he practiced generosity (行施 [xing shi]), gradually growing, like the new moon until the fifteenth day. Not long after, his father passed away, and he succeeded to the great legacy, ruling the country with authority. He transformed the people according to the Dharma (法 [fa]), did not wrong the myriad surnames, protected himself without meddling in others' affairs, and never encroached upon neighboring countries. If neighboring countries still came to attack him, he rarely captured them, rescuing the poor and giving them wealth, and respectfully serving sramanas (沙門 [sha men]) and Brahmins (婆羅門 [po luo men]). He always gave food to sentient beings with clean hands, and his mouth constantly proclaimed: "Give this person clothes, give this person food, and give them wealth. Protect this person, look after this person."

過去有王,名一切施;是王初生,即向父母說如是言:「我於一切無量眾生,尚能棄捨所重身命,況復其餘外物珍寶。」是故父母敬而重之,為立名字,字一切施。從其初生,身與行施,漸漸增長,譬如初月至十五日。其後不久父王崩背,即承洪業霸治國土,如法化民不抂萬姓,擁護自身不豫他事,終不侵陵他餘隣國。隣國若故來討罰之,希能擒獲,救攝貧民給施以財,恭敬沙門婆羅門等。常以淨手施眾生食,口常宣唱與是人衣、與是人食、及與財寶,愛護是人、瞻視是人。

[0055a15] At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) constantly practiced such good generosity (善布施 [shan bu shi]). At that time, the people of neighboring countries heard of the king's virtues and all came to seek refuge. His land was filled without empty spaces, like water from a flash flood on a mountaintop, flowing into ditches, ravines, and deep valleys. It was also like the tide coming in during the half-moon, and the people from other countries who came to seek refuge filled and crowded his country, just like that. Other neighboring countries gradually lost their people and each became resentful. They then gathered and discussed going together to attack him. Having decided this, they immediately assembled their four armies (四兵 [si bing]) and advanced towards his country.

[0055a15] 爾時,菩薩常行如是善布施,時隣國人民聞王功德,悉來歸化,其土充滿間無空處,猶如山頂暴漲之水,流注溝坑谿澗深處;亦如半月海水潮出,其國外來歸化之民,充滿側塞,亦復如是。其餘隣國漸失人民,各生瞋恨,即共集議,當共往討。作是議已,尋嚴四兵來向其國。

[0055a22] At that time, the border guards came from afar to report to the king: "The enemy from the neighboring country is now pressing near, like a violent storm, dark clouds, and fierce rain." The king immediately told them: "You should not disturb my mind." He then spoke in verse:

"The reason the neighboring country (隣國 [lin guo]),
Has come to attack my country (討我國 [tao wo guo]),
Is solely for the people (人民 [ren min]),
And the treasuries of precious jewels (庫藏珍寶 [ku cang zhen bao]).
Excellent! Very good!
I shall bestow them (當相施與 [dang xiang shi yu]),
I shall abandon them (捨之 [she zhi]),
And leave home to cultivate the Dao (出家學道 [chu jia xue dao]).
Many countries (國土 [guo tu]),
For the sake of five desires (五欲故 [wu yu gu]),
Invade and plunder the people (侵奪人民 [qin duo ren min]),
Accumulating without end (貯聚無厭 [zhu ju wu yan]),
You should know that such kings (是王 [shi wang]),
After their death (命終之後 [ming zhong zhi hou]),
Will immediately fall into hell (即墮地獄 [ji duo de yu]),
As animals and hungry ghosts (畜生餓鬼 [chu sheng e gui])."

 我當捨之,  出家學道。
 多有國土,  為五欲故,

 當知是王,  命終之後,
 即墮地獄,  畜生餓鬼。

Your Majesty, please observe! Your ministers today will strike this enemy with five weapons: halberds, spears, swords, and lances (五兵戟牟劍矟 [wu bing ji mou jian shuo]), like a violent wind scattering rain clouds."

[0055b05] 爾時,大臣及諸人民各作是言:「唯願,大王!莫便捨去,臣等自能當御此敵,王且觀之,臣等今日當以五兵戟牟劍矟,奮擊此賊,足如暴風吹破雨雲。」

[0055b08] The king then replied, "Alas, my lords! I have long known that you harbor great love, respect, and reverence for me. I also know that you are brave, invincible, valiant, and possess excellent military strategies and tactics. However, that enemy king is making this move not for you, but only for me. Even if they come, they will not harm you. How can you then generate such wicked intentions? I have long known that this body of the five aggregates (五盛陰身 [wu sheng yin shen]) is a target for countless arrows. Don't you know? I have long told you that Bodhisattvas (菩薩 [pu sa]) should regard all sentient beings as their only child. You should not generate a mind of anger and harm towards other sentient beings. You must know that such actions will definitely lead to hell. Therefore, you should single-mindedly cultivate good." As he was speaking, the bandits had already arrived, shouting loudly.

[0055b08] 王即答言:「咄哉卿等!吾已久知,卿等於吾,生大愛護,尊重恭敬;亦知卿等勇健、難勝、雄猛、武略、策謀第一。但彼敵王今作此舉,都不為卿,正為吾耳。假使彼來不損卿等,何得乃生如是惡心?吾久知此,五盛陰身為眾箭鏑,卿不知耶?吾久為卿說,諸菩薩應於眾生生一子想,汝不應於他眾生所生瞋害心,畢定當知墮于地獄,是故應當一心修善。」當說是時,賊已來至,高聲大叫。

[0055b17] When the king heard the sound, he immediately asked his officials, "What is that sound?"

The various ministers and officials, filled with sorrow and grief, cried out mournfully, all saying: "The wicked bandits, without cause, harm many people, like evil hail damaging grain, or fierce fire burning dry grass, or a violent wind uprooting large trees, or a lion killing various birds and beasts. The enemy bandits kill just like that."

[0055b17] 王聞聲已,即問群臣:「此是何聲?」

諸群臣寮各懷悲感,舉聲哀號,咸作是言:「惡賊無辜,多害人民,譬如惡雹傷害五穀,亦如猛火焚燒乾草,又如暴風吹拔大樹,又如師子殺害諸禽獸,怨賊殺害,亦復如是。」

[0055b21] At that time, the ministers, disregarding the king's instructions, dispersed and prepared their four armies (四兵 [si bing]) to engage in battle. Without a commander, the army quickly scattered, and countless soldiers lost their lives. Then, the king ascended the tower and said: "Because of evil desires, people commit evil. These desires are like a corpse walking through a latrine. Why do they commit evil for this? Foolish people are greedy for the country and stir up contention, like many birds fighting over a piece of meat. These sentient beings always have enemies: old age, sickness, and death (老病死 [lao bing si]). Why do they not examine these enemies themselves, but instead contend with others?" While King Yiqieshi (一切施王 [yi qie shi wang]) was contemplating this meaning, the enemy king entered the palace.

[0055b21] 爾時,諸臣不受王教,即各散出,莊嚴四兵便逆共戰。軍無主將,尋即退散,兵眾喪命,不可稱計。時,王登樓說如是言:「因惡欲故令人行惡,如是諸欲,猶如死尸行廁糞穢,如何為此而行惡耶!愚人貪國,興諍競心,猶如眾鳥競諍段肉,是諸眾生常有怨憎,謂老病死,云何不自觀察是怨,反更於他而生諍競?」一切施王思是義時,敵國怨王即入宮中。

[0055b29] The king then escaped through a water conduit into the deep mountains, reaching a dense forest, thus escaping the enemy. The place was pure, with various trees, countless flowers and fruits; the water was clear and soft, possessing the eight qualities (八味具足 [ba wei ju zu]); there were countless birds, wild geese, and animals. When the king saw this, his heart was filled with joy, and he further said, "I have truly escaped the troubles of home. Countless sentient beings are constantly afflicted by the fear of old age, sickness, and death (老病死 [lao bing si]). Now I have found this place, which is pure, peaceful, and indescribably delightful. This forest is the abode of Bodhisattvas who cultivate compassion (修悲菩薩 [xiu bei pu sa]), and it is also the solid fortress of those who have destroyed the four māras (破壞四魔之人 [po huai si mo zhi ren]). I have now been cleansed and purified, free from all defilements. I am now companions with these deer, and my body and mind are peaceful, experiencing supreme joy."

[0055b29] 王於爾時便從水竇逃入深山,至稠林中,得免怨賊。其地清淨,林木種種,華果無量,不可稱計;水清柔軟,八味具足,眾鳥鳧鴈,禽獸難計。王見是已,心生歡喜,復作是言:「吾今真實得離家過患,無量眾生常為老病死怖逼惱,今得此處清淨安樂快不可言,此林乃是修悲菩薩之所住處,亦是破壞四魔之人堅固牢城,我今已得清潔洗浴、離眾垢故,我今與此眾鹿為伴,身心安隱極受上樂。」

Yet my enmity has not yet been extinguished. I am now free to execute you. For what reason have you come here?"

[0057a23] At that time, King Yiqieshi (一切施王 [yi qie shi wang]) smiled cheerfully, without fear, his body and mind at ease like a lion king (師子王 [shi zi wang]), and said: "Don't you know? My name is King Yiqieshi (一切施王 [yi qie shi wang]). I wish to fulfill my original vow. I have come here for three reasons: First, for the Brahmin (婆羅門 [po luo men]) to obtain money. Second, because you previously offered a reward if anyone could bring me here, and you would generously reward them. Third, my original vow was to give all (一切施 [yi qie shi]), so I have come to abandon my body and life. You should now consider, if my body were to die and return to dust, what benefit would that be? The reason I originally fled into the mountains and forests was not out of fear, but solely to protect sentient beings. Your enmity is not yet extinguished. I have come here now to be slaughtered as you wish, so that your enmity may be removed, and your mind will be at peace. Therefore, you should do it quickly." He then spoke in verse:

"If you harbor anger towards your enemy (於怨生瞋恨 [yu yuan sheng chen hen]),
You will scorch your own mind (則自燋其心 [ze zi jiao qi xin]),
Like a fire under ashes (灰下火 [hui xia huo]),
It can still burn all things (猶能燒萬物 [you neng shao wan wu]).
Because the mind clings to anger (因心著瞋恚 [yin xin zhe chen hui]),
At the end of life, one falls into hell (命終墮地獄 [ming zhong duo de yu]),
Like a poisoned arrow (惡毒箭 [e du jian]),
When it strikes, life perishes (中則身命滅 [zhong ze shen ming mie]).
If you are angry at your enemy (瞋於怨憎 [chen yu yuan zeng]),
The mind cannot be tranquil (心不得寂靜 [xin bu de ji jing]),
Like someone with painful eyes (痛目者 [tong mu zhe]),
Unable to see true colors (不能見正色 [bu neng jian zheng se]).
This body is made of flesh and blood (身肉血成 [shen rou xue cheng]),
Bones, marrow, fat, and brain (骨髓肪膏腦 [gu sui fang gao nao]),
Feces, urine, tears, and saliva (屎尿涕唾等 [shi niao ti tuo deng]),
Wrapped in thin skin (薄皮裹其上 [bao pi guo qi shang]).
This body is like a walking latrine (如行廁 [ru xing ce]),
Without a master, without a self (無主無有我 [wu zhu wu you wo]),
What enmity does it have with the king (於王有何怨 [yu wang you he yuan]),
That it constantly generates anger (而常生瞋恚 [er chang sheng chen hui])?
The thieves of birth, old age, sickness, and death (生老病死賊 [sheng lao bing si zei]),
Constantly invade the king's body (常來侵王身 [chang lai qin wang shen]),
Why then, in this midst,
Do you instead generate thoughts of friends and relatives (返生親友想 [fan sheng qin you xiang])?
My body is composed of the four great elements (四大成 [si da cheng]),
The king's body is also like that (亦復然 [yi fu ran]),
If you are angry now (見瞋者 [jian chen zhe]),
Then you are angry at yourself (則為自瞋 [ze wei zi chen])."

[0057a23] 爾時,一切施王嬉怡微笑,無有畏懼,身心容豫如師子王,而作是言:「汝不知耶!我身即名一切施王,我欲成就本誓願故。今來在此,有三因緣:一者、為婆羅門而求錢財;二者、以汝先募,若得我身將來此者,當重賞之;三者、我先誓願當一切施,是故我來欲捨身命。汝今當觀,若我此身命終入地,為何所益?我本所以逃入山林,非以畏故,但為愛護諸眾生耳。汝今自在怨心未滅,我今來此,隨意屠割而得除怨,心則安隱,是故汝今應早為之。」即說偈言:

「於怨生瞋恨,  則自燋其心,
 譬如灰下火,  猶能燒萬物。
 因心著瞋恚,  命終墮地獄,
 猶如惡毒箭,  中則身命滅。
 若瞋於怨憎,  心不得寂靜,
 譬如痛目者,  不能見正色。
 此身肉血成,  骨髓肪膏腦,

[0057b22] At that time, the enemy king, hearing these words, rose from his throne, joined his palms in respectful salutation to King Yiqieshi (一切施王 [yi qie shi wang]), and said: "We only wish, Great King! Return to your original throne. You are the Dharma King (法王 [fa wang]), the master of righteous transformation, while I am a Rakshasa (羅剎 [luo sha]), a violent and wicked person. You are the lamp of the world (世燈 [shi deng]), the parent of the world (世父母 [shi fu mu]), while I am a vile and great thief in the world, specialized in committing evil actions and robbing others' property. You are the praise of Dharma (法稱 [fa cheng]), the bright mirror of True Dharma (正法明鏡 [zheng fa ming jing]), while I am not the praise of Dharma, constantly deceiving others, like a blind person who does not see his own faults. People like us, whose sins are so heavy, should have long ago sunk into the earth. The reason we have lingered until today is truly because of your holding on. I now abandon this land and my own body and offer them to you."

[0057c01] King Yiqieshi (一切施王 [yi qie shi wang]) then extensively expounded the Dharma (法 [fa]) to the enemy king, making him abide in the True Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]). He then gave ample wealth to the Brahmin (婆羅門 [po luo men]) and sent him back to his homeland. When the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva (菩薩摩訶薩 [pu sa mo he sa]) cultivated the Dāna pāramitā (檀波羅蜜 [tan bo luo mi]) in this way, he even abandoned such a precious body, let alone external possessions and treasures.
