Sutta 40: The Two Pure Dharmas

[0881b07] Thus I have heard:

At one time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) was in Śrāvastī (舍衛國 [she wei guo]), dwelling in the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada Garden (祇樹給孤獨園 [qi shu gei gu du yuan]). At that time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) told the bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "There are two pure Dharmas (二清白法 [er qing bai fa]) that enable one to contemplate the world. What are these two? First, shame (媿 [kui]); second, moral dread (慚 [can]). If these two Dharmas (法 [fa]) did not exist in the world, one would not be able to distinguish father from mother, elder brother from younger brother, male from female, student from teacher, ruler from elder. If this world were not righteous, it would be like cattle, horses, elephants, chickens, pigs, dogs, and other animals. But it is precisely because of these two pure Dharmas (法 [fa]), shame (媿 [kui]) and moral dread (慚 [can]), that one can distinguish father from mother, elder brother from younger brother, male from female, student from teacher, ruler from elder. If this world were not righteous, it would be like cattle, horses, elephants, chickens, pigs, dogs, and other animals. But it is precisely because of these pure Dharmas (法 [fa]) that one can distinguish."

yī shí, fú zài shě wèi guó, xíng zài qí shù gěi gū dú yuán. shì shí, fú gào bǐ qiū: “èr qīng bái fǎ néng dé guān shì jiān. hé děng èr? yī zhě kuì, èr zhě cán. shè shì shì jiān wú yǒu shì èr fǎ, wèi bù dé fēn bié ruò fù ruò mǔ,, ruò xiōng ruò dì,, ruò nán nǚ,, ruò cóng xué ruò shī,, ruò jūn ruò dà rén. shè yǒu shì shì jiān bù zhèng, pì rú niú mǎ xiàng jī zhū gǒu yì chù shēng, dàn guān shì qīng bái èr fǎ gù, kuì yì cán gù, wèi dé fēn míng wèi fù wèi mǔ,, wèi xiōng wèi dì,, wèi nán nǚ,, wèi cóng xué wèi shī,, wèi jūn wèi dà rén. shè yǒu shì shì jiān bù zhèng, pì rú niú mǎ xiàng jī zhū gǒu yì chù shēng, dàn guān shì fǎ qīng bái gù, wèi dé fēn bié.”
