[0879c15] Thus I have heard:
At one time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) was in Śrāvastī (舍衛國 [she wei guo]), dwelling in the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada Garden (祇樹給孤獨園 [qi shu gei gu du yuan]). The Buddha (佛 [fu]) told the bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "There are five evils (五 [wu]) of not relying on others (惡不依他人 [e bu yi ta ren]). What are these five? First, the mind of the one who does not rely does not understand; second, relying on a distorted mind leads to separation; third, one's own mind does not understand; fourth, one transgresses the Path (道行 [dao xing]); fifth, one does not accept the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) solemn teachings. There are five merits of relying on others (五善依他人 [wu shan yi ta ren]): not being jealous, having a good mind that understands, an understanding mind that does not fall into confusion, acting with a mind that treats all equally, and giving vision to those who come later."
[0879c15] wén rú shì:
yī shí, fú zài shě wèi guó, xíng zài qí shù gěi gū dú yuán. fú gào bǐ qiū: “è bù yī tā rén yǒu wǔ. hé děng wèi wǔ? yī zhě bù yī zhě yì bù jiě, èr zhě yī yì qū lí, sān zhě zì yì bù jiě, sì zhě fàn dào xíng, wǔ zhě bù shòu fú yán jiào. wǔ shàn yī tā rén, bù xiāng jí zhě hǎo yì jiě, jiě yì bù duò luàn zì yì, jiě tiān xià děng yì xíng, hòu lái zhě yǔ yǎn.”
[0879c15] wen ru shi:
yi shi, fu zai she wei guo, xing zai qi shu gei gu du yuan. fu gao bi qiu: "e bu yi ta ren you wu. he deng wei wu? yi zhe bu yi zhe yi bu jie, er zhe yi yi qu li, san zhe zi yi bu jie, si zhe fan dao xing, wu zhe bu shou fu yan jiao. wu shan yi ta ren, bu xiang ji zhe hao yi jie, jie yi bu duo luan zi yi, jie tian xia deng yi xing, hou lai zhe yu yan."
