[0857c22] Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) was residing in the land where the Strong men (力士 [li shi]) were born, among the great cluster of trees (大叢樹間 [da cong shu jian]) in Kusinagara (拘夷那竭國 [ju yi na jie guo]), accompanied by twelve hundred and fifty bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]). As the time of his Parinirvana (滅度 [mie du]) approached, the ministers (國臣 [guo chen]) and common people (民 [min]) of that country all gathered. The Buddha (佛 [fu]) asked Ananda (阿難 [a nan]), "Why has this great multitude (大眾 [da zhong]) gathered?" The venerable Ananda (賢者阿難 [xian zhe a nan]) said to the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), "There is a large stone mountain (大石山 [da shi shan]) not far from here, sixty zhang (丈 [zhang]) square and one hundred and twenty zhang (丈 [zhang]) high, obstructing the gateway (門途 [men tu]) and hindering travelers. Five hundred Strong men (五百力士 [wu bai li shi]) collectively discussed, saying: 'Our physical strength (膂力 [lu li]) is rarely seen in the world. It is useless to keep it idle; we should move this together and establish merit for future generations (立功後代 [li gong hou dai]).' They then combined their strength and shouted together, but exhausted themselves without being able to move it. Their shouts echoed far and wide. Therefore, the common people (黎民 [li min]) converged to observe."

[0857c22] wén rú shì:

[0858a01] The Buddha (佛 [fu]) told Ananda (阿難 [a nan]), "Adjust your Dharma robe (法服 [fa fu]) and carefully observe." Ananda (阿難 [a nan]) received the instruction, immediately rose from his seat, bowed his head at the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) feet (稽首佛足 [ji shou fu zu]), then sat alone, attending him, and advanced behind the Buddha (佛 [fu]). The great assembly (諸大眾 [zhu da zhong]) of five hundred Strong men (五百力士 [wu bai li shi]) saw the Buddha (佛 [fu]) approaching from afar. His golden countenance (金顏 [jin yan]) was serene, his majesty (威耀 [wei yao]) lofty and grand, his appearance (端正 [duan zheng]) extraordinarily beautiful (殊妙 [shu miao]), his form (色像 [se xiang]) pure (清淨 [qing jing]), with the auspicious marks (相好 [xiang hao]) of a great being (大士 [da shi]), adorning his body (莊嚴其身 [zhuang yan qi shen]). He had subdued the aggregates (陰種 [yin zhong]), was free from decay and decline (無有衰入 [wu you shuai ru]), his mind (其心 [qi xin]) was serene (湛然 [zhan ran]), his faculties (諸根 [zhu gen]) perfectly still (寂定 [ji ding]), harmonious (和悅 [he yue]) and tranquil (調隱 [diao yin]), supreme among gods (天 [tian]) and humans (人 [ren]). His great blazing radiance (洪焰暉赫 [hong yan hui he]) was like a luminous treasure mountain (晃若寶山 [huang ruo bao shan]), like a great torch (大炬 [da ju]) illuminating the deep darkness (炤燿幽冥 [zhao yao you ming]), like a great mountain peak (大山崗 [da shan gang]) with accumulated snow, like the light of the sun (日之光 [ri zhi guang]) rising in the morning (朝陽 [chao yang]), like the full moon in autumn (秋月盛 [qiu yue sheng]) exceptionally bright among the stars (眾星特明 [zhong xing te ming]), like a Wheel-Turning King (轉輪王 [zhuan lun wang]) accompanied by his treasure-ministers (諸寶臣 [zhu bao chen]) and the four divisions of his army (四部眾俱 [si bu zhong ju]), like a tree (樹 [shu]) with planted flowers (花殖 [hua zhi]) that are resplendent (暐曄 [wei ye]) and flourishing (繁茂 [fan mao]), with immeasurable brilliance (英豔無量 [ying yan wu liang]), transcending his holy person (聖躬 [sheng gong]). The five hundred Strong men (五百力士 [wu bai li shi]) and countless other beings (無數之眾 [wu shu zhi zhong]), gazing upon his divine transformations (神變 [shen bian]), were all filled with joy (喜踊 [xi yong]). Good thoughts (善心 [shan xin]) arose spontaneously, and they universally welcomed him, prostrated their five limbs (五體自歸 [wu ti zi gui]), bowed their heads at his feet (稽首足下 [ji shou zu xia]), and with single-minded reverence, stood back to one side.

[0858a14] Thereupon, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) asked the Strong men (諸力士 [zhu li shi]), "Why are your bodies (體 [ti]) fatigued and your complexions (色 [se]) withered?" They replied, "This great stone (大石 [da shi]), sixty zhang (丈 [zhang]) square and one hundred and twenty zhang (丈 [zhang]) high, we wished to lift and move it. We began by exerting ourselves diligently for one day (一日勤身勠力 [yi ri qin shen lu li]), and up to one month (一月 [yi yue]), it remained unmovable. We are ashamed of our ineffectiveness (慚恥無效 [can chi wu xiao]) and have become a laughingstock to the world (取笑天下 [qu xiao tian xia]), which is why we are exhausted and haggard." "What do you hope for?" The Strong men (力士 [li shi]) replied, "Indeed, Great Sage! Our strength (福力 [fu li]) cannot be surpassed. We earnestly wish to move the stone (徙石 [xi shi]) to benefit the world (光益於世 [guang yi yu shi]), to make our names famous (著名 [zhe ming]), leave behind achievements (垂勳 [chui xun]), and be praised by future generations (銘譽來裔 [ming yu lai yi]), so that the king's path (王路 [wang lu]) may be straight and the wild regions (荒域 [huang yu]) submit." The Buddha (佛 [fu]) said to the Strong men (力士 [li shi]), "I understand your compassionate intention, but you are unable to accomplish it. I will move it for you and fulfill your original vow (遂汝本願 [sui ru ben yuan]), so that you may receive credit. Be careful not to feel ashamed or afraid." The Strong men (力士 [li shi]) joyfully replied, "We respectfully obey."

[0858a14] yú shì, shì zūn wèn zhū lì shì: “rǔ děng hé gù tǐ pí sè cuì?” dá yuē: “jīn cǐ dà shí fāng liù shí zhàng gāo bǎi èr shí zhàng, yù gòng jǔ yí, shǐ cóng yī rì qín shēn lù lì, zhì yú yī yuè yǒng bù kě dòng, cán chǐ wú xiào qǔ xiào tiān xià, shì yǐ pí jié zī sè qiáo cuì.” “cǐ hé suǒ xī jì?” lì shì dá yuē: “wéi rán dà shèng! wǒ zhī fú lì mò néng yú zhě, shù jǐ yù xǐ shí guāng yì yú shì, zhe míng chuí xūn míng yù lái yì, shǐ wáng lù píng zhí huāng yù guī fú.” fú gào lì shì: “míng rǔ zhì mǐn yì bù kān rèn, wú wèi ěr yí suì rǔ běn yuàn, shǐ rǔ dài gōng shèn wú kuì jù.” lì shì huān xǐ qǐ yuē: “jìng cóng.”

[0858a14] yu shi, shi zun wen zhu li shi: "ru deng he gu ti pi se cui?" da yue: "jin ci da shi fang liu shi zhang gao bai er shi zhang, yu gong ju yi, shi cong yi ri qin shen lu li, zhi yu yi yue yong bu ke dong, can chi wu xiao qu xiao tian xia, shi yi pi jie zi se qiao cui." [0858a22] At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) readjusted his Dharma robe (法服 [fa fu]) and, with the great toe of his right foot (右足大指 [you zu da zhi]), kicked up the mountain stone (山石 [shan shi]), sending it up to the Brahma heaven (梵天 [fan tian]). He received it in his right palm (手右掌 [shou you zhang]), turned it three times (摶之三轉 [tuan zhi san zhuan]), placed it in the empty sky (虛空 [xu kong]), forty-nine feet (四丈九尺 [si zhang jiu chi]) above the ground, then returned it to his palm. With three fingers, he crumbled it (三指篾屑 [san zhi mie xie]) and blew it away, causing it to vanish (吹令銷瀃 [chui ling xiao si]). Immediately, the three-thousand great-thousand world (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]) was shaken six times (六返震動 [liu fan zhen dong]). At that time, the Strong men (諸力士 [zhu li shi]), seeing the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) divine transformation (神變 [shen bian]) and the manifestation of his majestic power (威靈顯發 [wei ling xian fa]), became terrified and their hair stood on end (衣毛為竪 [yi mao wei shu]). They said to the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), "Is this act of lifting a finger due to the Great Sage's (大聖 [da sheng]) strength from his parents' upbringing and nursing (父母恩養乳哺力耶 [fu mu en yang ru bu li ye])? Or is it the power of divine feet (神足 [shen zu]), wisdom (智慧 [zhi hui]), and mental conduct (意行力乎 [yi xing li hu])?" He replied, "It is the power of nursing (乳哺之勢 [ru bu zhi shi]), not any other power. If I were to employ the power of divine feet (神足之力 [shen zu zhi li]), I would be able to move this three-thousand great-thousand Buddha-world (三千大千佛之世界 [san qian da qian fu zhi shi jie]), place it in hundreds of thousands of different Buddha-lands (殊異百千佛土 [shu yi bai qian fu tu]), without causing anyone to have a thought of going or coming (不使人有往來想 [bu shi ren you wang lai xiang]), without endangering sentient beings (不危眾生 [bu wei zhong sheng]) or harming earthworms (不害地蟲 [bu hai de chong])." The Strong men (力力士 [li li shi]) asked again, "What is the nature of the power of nursing (乳哺之力 [ru bu zhi li])?" The World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) replied, "The strength of a common ox (凡牛之力 [fan niu zhi li]) is one hundred times less than that of a water buffalo (水牛力一 [shui niu li yi]). The strength of a water buffalo (水牛力百 [shui niu li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a green ox (青牛力一 [qing niu li yi]). The strength of a green ox (青牛力百 [qing niu li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a yak (犛牛力一 [mao niu li yi]). The strength of a yak (犛牛力百 [mao niu li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a bamboo ox (竹牛力一 [zhu niu li yi]). The strength of a bamboo ox (竹牛力百 [zhu niu li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a grass elephant (草象力一 [cao xiang li yi]). The strength of a grass elephant (草象力百 [cao xiang li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a common elephant (凡象力一 [fan xiang li yi]). The strength of a common elephant (凡象力百 [fan xiang li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a black elephant (黑象力一 [hei xiang li yi]). The strength of a black elephant (黑象力百 [hei xiang li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a white elephant (白象力一 [bai xiang li yi]). The strength of a white elephant (白象力百 [bai xiang li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a dragon (龍力一 [long li yi]). The strength of a dragon (龍力百 [long li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a terrifying strongman (可畏力士力一 [ke wei li shi li yi]). The strength of a terrifying strongman (可畏力士力百 [ke wei li shi li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a 'broken' strongman (段力士力一 [duan li shi li yi]). The strength of a 'broken' strongman (段力士力百 [duan li shi li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a 'collapsed' strongman (崩墮力士力一 [beng duo li shi li yi]). The strength of a 'collapsed' strongman (崩墮力士力百 [beng duo li shi li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a 'great destruction' strongman (大破壞力士力一 [da po huai li shi li yi]). The strength of a 'great destruction' strongman (大破壞力士力百 [da po huai li shi li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a 'half-human vehicle' strongman (半人乘力士力一 [ban ren cheng li shi li yi]). The strength of a 'half-human vehicle' strongman (半人乘力士力百 [ban ren cheng li shi li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a 'human vehicle' strongman (人乘力士力一 [ren cheng li shi li yi]). The strength of a 'human vehicle' strongman (人乘力士力百 [ren cheng li shi li bai]) is one hundred times less than that of a 'great human vehicle' strongman (大人乘力士力一 [da ren cheng li shi li yi]). Countless (無央數 [wu yang shu]) such strengths are inferior to the power of nursing (乳哺之力 [ru bu zhi li]) of the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]), the Arhat (至真 [zhi zhen]), the Perfectly Enlightened One (等正覺 [deng zheng jue])." The Buddha (佛 [fu]) told the Strong men (諸力士 [zhu li shi]), "You should know that this is the power of nursing (乳哺之力 [ru bu zhi li]) of the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai])."

The Buddha (佛 [fu]) told the Strong men (力士 [li shi]), "I recall that in the past, I traveled with Mahāmauggalyāyana (大目揵連 [da mu qian lian]) to various countries. At that time, there was a grain famine (穀飢饉 [gu ji jin]), and the bhikshu assembly (諸比丘眾 [zhu bi qiu zhong]) could not obtain alms (分衛 [fen wei]). Moggalyāyana (目揵連 [mu qian lian]) said to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), 'Grain and rice are extremely expensive, and the people (人民 [ren min]) are starving (餒餓 [nei e]). Now the bhikshus (諸比丘 [zhu bi qiu]) obtain no alms (分衛無獲 [fen wei wu huo]), their energy (氣力 [qi li]) is diminished and they cannot recite scriptures (講誦 [jiang song]). They are getting weaker day by day and I fear they will not survive (不全命 [bu quan ming]). In ancient times, when heaven and earth first formed (天地始成之時 [tian de shi cheng zhi shi]), the earth produced a natural sweet dew (自然甘露之味 [zi ran gan lu zhi wei]). Those who ate it were healthy and at peace (康寧 [kang ning]), and their four great elements were tranquil (四大用安 [si da yong an]). Later, people's merit (福 [fu]) was meager, and the taste disappeared into the earth. Now, I wish to make the earth reproduce that ancient taste (古之味 [gu zhi wei]) so that the bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]) and the people (國人 [guo ren]) can all be saved, attain fullness, and recite scriptures (誦經 [song jing]) and contemplate the Way (念道 [nian dao]).' The Buddha (佛 [fu]) told Moggalyāyana (目連 [mu lian]), 'Stop! Even if you were to make the earth reproduce, the worms (蟲蛾 [chong e]) and crawling creatures (蠕動之類 [ru dong zhi lei]) on the earth would surely be harmed. Moreover, the people's merit (眾人福 [zhong ren fu]) is meager, and they should not partake of the ancient taste of the earth.' Moggalyāyana (目連 [mu lian]) again said, 'I will take the bhikshus (諸比丘 [zhu bi qiu]) and the hungry and weak people (飢羸民 [ji lei min]) to the land of Uttarakuru (欝單曰土 [yu dan yue tu]) and let them eat the natural refined rice (自然粳米 [zi ran jing mi]).' The World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) said, 'Those who have divine feet (神足者 [shen zu zhe]) can reach it themselves. How can those who have not attained lightness of body (未得輕舉 [wei de qing ju]) go there?' Moggalyāyana (目連 [mu lian]) replied, 'For those without divine power (無神力者 [wu shen li zhe]), I will assist them so they can go and obtain peace.' Moggalyāyana's (目連之德 [mu lian zhi de]) virtue and divine transformation (威變 [wei bian]) were like this: Jambudvipa (閻浮提 [yan fu ti]) is calculated to be two hundred and eighty thousand li (二十八萬里 [er shi ba wan li]) wide and long, its top broad and bottom narrow. Godaniya (瞿耶尼域 [qu ye ni yu]) is three hundred and twenty thousand li (三十二萬里 [san shi er wan li]) wide and long, its land shaped like a half-moon. Purvavideha (弗于逮域 [fu yu dai yu]) is three hundred and sixty thousand li (三十六萬里 [san shi liu wan li]) wide and long, its land perfectly round. Uttarakuru (欝單曰域 [yu dan yue yu]) is forty li (四十方里 [si shi fang li]) square, its land perfectly square. Mountains (山 [shan]) encircle the four regions (四方域 [si fang yu]). If the entire population (滿中人民 [man zhong ren min]) were to attain divine feet (神足 [shen zu]) like Mahāmauggalyāyana (大目連 [da mu lian]), and each of them filled the three-thousand great-thousand world (三千大千世界 [san qian da qian shi jie]), it would not compare to the divine power (神力 [shen li]) of the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) by a hundred times (百倍 [bai bei]), a thousand times (千倍 [qian bei]), ten thousand times (萬倍 [wan bei]), a hundred million times (億倍 [yi bei]), or hundreds of millions of times (巨億萬倍 [ju yi wan bei]). It cannot be compared to emptiness (計空不比 [ji kong bu bi]) and has no analogy (無以為喻 [wu yi wei yu]). This is the power of divine feet (神足力 [shen zu li]) of the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai])."

[0859b01] Thereupon, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) recited this verse:

[0859b01] 佛於是頌曰:

「法起必歸盡, 興者當就衰,
 萬物皆無常, 慮是乃為安。
 得百千金山, 福祚難為喻,
 不如供泥塔, 欣豫歸勝寺。
 獲寶百千藏, 福慶不可計,
 不如供泥塔, 喜踊歸勝寺。
 設百千寶車, 載色如紫金,
 不如供土寺, 踊躍歸命佛。」

[0859b01] fú yú shì sòng yuē:

[0859b10] When the Buddha (佛 [fu]) preached this sutra, the five hundred Strong men (諸力士眾五百人等 [zhu li shi zhong wu bai ren deng]) and others knew the world to be impermanent (世無常 [shi wu chang]) and the three realms (三界 [san jie]) unreliable (難怙 [nan hu]). There was no ultimate truth (一真諦 [yi zhen di]) except the Way (道 [dao]) to rely on. Their arrogance (貢高 [gong gao]) was immediately removed, and they no longer clung to self (不計吾我 [bu ji wu wo]). All of them developed the unsurpassed, true, and correct aspiration for the Way (無上正真道意 [wu shang zheng zhen dao yi]), and immediately attained the stage of non-retrogression (立不退轉之地 [li bu tui zhuan zhi de]). Countless hundreds of thousands of gods (天人 [tian ren]), having removed defilements (遠塵離垢 [yuan chen li gou]), had the Dharma Eye (法眼 [fa yan]) arise concerning all phenomena (諸法 [zhu fa]).

[0859b14] When the Buddha (佛 [fu]) finished speaking, everyone was filled with joy (莫不歡喜 [mo bu huan xi]), and each prostrated their head to the ground (頭面著地 [tou mian zhe de]) in reverence to the Buddha (佛 [fu]).
