[0829b12] At that time, King Pasenadi (波斯匿王 [bo si ni wang]) had ten dreams (十事 [shi shi]) in the night. The King (王 [wang]) woke up greatly distressed and afraid of losing his country (亡國 [wang guo]), his body, wife, and children. The next morning, he immediately summoned his high officials (公卿 [gong qing]), ministers (大臣 [da chen]), wise Daoists (明智道士 [ming zhi dao shi]), and Brahmans (婆羅門 [po luo men]) who could interpret dreams (解夢相者 [jie meng xiang zhe]). [0829c01] The King (王 [wang]) then told his wife: "Last night I dreamt ten things (十事 [shi shi]). Firstly, I saw three cauldrons (三釜羅 [san fu luo]), with the two outer cauldrons full and the middle cauldron empty. The steam from the two outer cauldrons mingled but did not enter the empty middle cauldron. Secondly, I dreamt of a horse eating with both its mouth and its rear. Thirdly, I dreamt of a large tree blossoming. Fourthly, I dreamt of a small tree bearing fruit. Fifthly, I dreamt of a person asking for a rope, and then there was a sheep, and the owner of the sheep ate the rope. Sixthly, I dreamt of a fox sitting on a golden bed, eating with golden utensils. Seventhly, I dreamt of a large cow sucking milk from its calf. Eighthly, I dreamt of a herd of black oxen (黑牛群 [hei niu qun]) coming from four directions, roaring and wanting to fight, but they were about to meet but had not met, and I did not know where the oxen were. Ninthly, I dreamt of a large pond (大陂池 [da bei chi]) where the water in the center was muddy, and the water on the four sides was clear. Tenthly, I dreamt of a large stream (大溪水 [da xi shui]) whose waves were flowing bright red. After having these dreams, I immediately woke up, greatly alarmed and fearful of losing my country (亡國 [wang guo]), my body, wife, children, and people. I then summoned my high officials (公卿 [gong qing]), ministers (大臣 [da chen]), Daoists (道人 [dao ren]), and Brahmans (婆羅門 [po luo men]) who could interpret dreams. At that time, a Brahman (婆羅門 [po luo men]) said: 'You must kill the Crown Prince (王太子 [wang tai zi]), the beloved wife (所重夫人 [suo zhong fu ren]), ministers (大臣 [da chen]), and slaves (奴婢 [nu bi]), to offer sacrifices to heaven.' That is why I am sorrowful."

[0829c15] The wife replied: "Great King (大王 [da wang])! Do not be sorrowful about dreams. It is like a person buying gold, also testing it with fire and grinding it on a stone, its quality is revealed. Now the Buddha (佛 [fu]) is nearby in the Jetavana Vihara (祇洹精舍 [qi huan jing she]). You can go and ask the Buddha (佛 [fu]). You should follow what the Buddha (佛 [fu]) says. Why believe the words of these mad and foolish Brahmans (狂癡婆羅門 [kuang chi po luo men]) and torment yourself to such an extent?"

[0829c19] The King (王 [wang]) then joyfully awoke. He immediately summoned his close ministers and ordered them to quickly prepare chariots and cavalry. The King (王 [wang]) rode in a high-canopied chariot, accompanied by tens of thousands of horsemen and attendants. He left Sravasti City (舍衛城 [she wei cheng]) and arrived at the Jetavana Vihara (祇洹精舍 [qi huan jing she]). He dismounted and walked to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), prostrated his head and face to the ground at his feet, knelt with clasped hands, and reported to the Buddha (佛 [fu]): "Last night I dreamt ten things (十事 [shi shi]). May the Buddha (佛 [fu]) have mercy on me and explain each one."

[0829c23] The Buddha (佛 [fu]) said to the King (王 [wang]): "Excellent, Great King (大王 [da wang])! The dreams you had are omens for the future generations. In future generations, people will not fear the prohibitions of the law. They will all be promiscuous and greedy for wives and children, indulging in lust without satisfaction, being jealous and foolish, not knowing shame or modesty. Chaste people will be abandoned, and sycophants will disrupt the country. Your dream of seeing three cauldrons (三釜羅 [san fu luo]), with the two outer cauldrons full and the middle cauldron empty, and the steam from the two outer cauldrons mingling but not entering the empty middle cauldron, means that in future generations, people will not adequately support their poor parents. Those born together will not be close, but instead will be close to others. The wealthy and noble will associate with each other, exchanging gifts. Your dream of the first matter is precisely for this reason.

Taxes and levies will be ceaseless. Lower officials will act corruptly, and the people will not find peace and will not settle in their old lands. Your dream of the second matter is precisely for this reason.

[0830a23] "Your dream of seeing black oxen (黑牛 [hei niu]) coming in herds from four directions, roaring and wanting to fight, about to meet but not meeting, and not knowing where the oxen were, means that in future generations, kings (國王 [guo wang]), ministers (大臣 [da chen]), chief magistrates (長吏 [zhang li]), and people (人民 [ren min]) will all not fear the great prohibitions. They will be greedy for lust and desire, hoarding wealth and property. Their wives and children, young and old, will all be unchaste, lustful and gluttonous, without satisfaction. They will be jealous and foolish, not knowing shame. Loyalty and filial piety will not be practiced, and sycophants will ruin the country. They will not fear those above or below. Rain will not come in season, the weather will not be harmonious, strong winds and dust storms will arise, flying sand will break trees, and locusts will devour crops, causing them to fail. When emperors and people act in this way, heaven allows it to be so. Also, clouds will appear from the four directions, and emperors and people will all rejoice, saying: 'The clouds have gathered from all four sides, it will surely rain now.' But in a short while, the clouds will scatter on their own. This strange phenomenon appears to make all people (万民 [wan min]) change their ways, uphold goodness and precepts (守善持戒 [shou shan chi jie]), fear heaven and earth, not enter evil destinies (惡道 [e dao]), live chastely, have one wife and one husband, and be compassionate and not angry. Your dream of the eighth matter is precisely for this reason.

[0830b06] "Your dream of seeing a large pond (大陂水 [da bei shui]) where the water in the center was muddy and the water on the four sides was clear, means that in future generations, within Jambudvipa (閻浮地 [yan fu de]), ministers (臣 [chen]) will be disloyal, sons will be unfilial, they will not respect the elders (長老 [zhang lao]), they will not believe in the Buddha-Dharma (佛道 [fu dao]), they will not respect the learned Daoists (明經道士 [ming jing dao shi]). Ministers (臣 [chen]) will covet official rewards, and sons will covet their fathers' wealth, without any reciprocity or regard for righteousness. Neighboring countries (邊國 [bian guo]) will be loyal and filial, respectful of the elders (長老 [zhang lao]), believing and delighting in the Buddha-Dharma (佛道 [fu dao]), giving Dana (給施 [gei shi]) to the learned Daoists (明經道士 [ming jing dao shi]), and mindful of reciprocity. [0830b12] "Your dream of seeing a large stream (大溪水 [da xi shui]) whose waves were flowing bright red, means that in future generations, emperors (帝王 [di wang]) and kings (國王 [guo wang]) will not be content with their countries. They will raise armies and fight each other, using chariots (車兵 [che bing]) and cavalry (馬兵 [ma bing]), attacking and killing each other, until the flowing blood is bright red. Your dream of the tenth matter is precisely for this reason. All these are matters for the people of future generations. If the people of future generations can keep the Buddha-Dharma (佛道 [fu dao]) in their hearts and serve the learned Daoists (明經道人 [ming jing dao ren]), after death, they will all be reborn in heaven (天上 [tian shang]). [0830b18] The King (王 [wang]) then knelt down, clasped his hands, and accepted the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) teaching. His heart was joyful, and he attained concentration and wisdom (定慧 [ding hui]), no longer having any fear. The King (王 [wang]) then prostrated himself and bowed, placing his head on the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) feet. He returned to the palace and richly rewarded his wife, appointing her as the true Queen (正后 [zheng hou]), giving her much wealth and treasures to give Dana (施 [shi]) to others. The country became prosperous and joyful. He took away the salaries of all the high officials (公卿 [gong qing]), ministers (大臣 [da chen]), and Brahmans (婆羅門 [po luo men]), expelled them from the country, and no longer trusted them. All the people (一切人民 [yi qie ren min]) developed the unsurpassed, correct, and true path (無上正真之道 [wu shang zheng zhen zhi dao]).
