[0795a17] Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was staying in Anathapindika's Jeta Grove in Sravasti.
[0795a17] wén rú shì:
yī shí, fú zài shě wèi guó qí shù gěi gū dú yuán.
[0795a17] wen ru shi:
yi shi, fu zai she wei guo qi shu gei gu du yuan.

[0795a18] At that time, the Bhagavan told the Bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "If a Bhikshu (比丘 [bi qiu]) possesses eleven qualities, he will certainly be able to achieve growth. What are these eleven? The Bhikshu (比丘 [bi qiu]) perfects his precepts (戒 [jie]), perfects Samadhi (三昧 [san mei]), perfects wisdom (智慧 [zhi hui]), perfects liberation (解脫 [jie tuo]), perfects the wisdom of liberation (解脫見慧 [jie tuo jian hui]), has tranquil sense organs (諸根寂靜 [zhu gen ji jing]), knows contentment in eating and drinking, always practices the common Dharma (共法 [gong fa]), also knows its expedient means, distinguishes its meaning, and is not attached to gain. Thus, Bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]), if one possesses these eleven qualities, one is capable of growth. Why is that? All conditioned phenomena (一切諸行 [yi qie zhu xing]) truly possess these eleven qualities."
[0795a18] ěr shí, shì zūn gào zhū bǐ qiū: “ruò bǐ qiū chéng jiù shí yī fǎ zhě, bì néng yǒu suǒ chéng zhǎng. yún hé wèi shí yī? yú shì, bǐ qiū! jiè chéng jiù, sān mèi chéng jiù, zhì huì chéng jiù, jiě tuō chéng jiù, jiě tuō jiàn huì chéng jiù, zhū gēn jì jìng, yǐn shí zhī zhǐ zú, héng xiū xíng gòng fǎ, yì zhī qí fāng biàn, fēn bié qí yì, bù zhe lì yǎng. rú shì, bǐ qiū! ruò chéng jiù cǐ shí yī fǎ zhě, kān rèn zhǎng yǎng. suǒ yǐ rán zhě, yī qiè zhū xíng zhèng yǒu shí yī fǎ.”
[0795a18] er shi, shi zun gao zhu bi qiu: "ruo bi qiu cheng jiu shi yi fa zhe, bi neng you suo cheng zhang. yun he wei shi yi? yu shi, bi qiu! jie cheng jiu, san mei cheng jiu, zhi hui cheng jiu, jie tuo cheng jiu, jie tuo jian hui cheng jiu, zhu gen ji jing, yin shi zhi zhi zu, heng xiu xing gong fa, yi zhi qi fang bian, fen bie qi yi, bu zhe li yang. ru shi, bi qiu! ruo cheng jiu ci shi yi fa zhe, kan ren zhang yang. suo yi ran zhe, yi qie zhu xing zheng you shi yi fa."

[0795a24] At that time, Ananda (阿難 [a nan]) said to the Bhagavan: "Why are there only eleven qualities and no more? What are these eleven?"
[0795a24] ěr shí, ā nán bái shì zūn yán: “hé yǐ gù, zhèng yǒu shí yī fǎ wú yǒu chū zhě. yún hé wèi shí yī?”
[0795a24] er shi, a nan bai shi zun yan: "he yi gu, zheng you shi yi fa wu you chu zhe. yun he wei shi yi?"
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
[0795a26] "These are: dwelling in the forest (阿練若 [a lian ruo]), begging for food (乞食 [qi shi]), sitting in one place (一處坐 [yi chu zuo]), eating once a day (一時食 [yi shi shi]), eating at noon (正中食 [zheng zhong shi]), not choosing households for alms (不擇家食 [bu ze jia shi]), keeping three robes (守三衣 [shou san yi]), sitting under a tree (坐樹下 [zuo shu xia]), sitting in the open in a quiet place (露坐閑靜之處 [lu zuo xian jing zhi chu]), wearing patched robes (著補納衣 [zhe bu na yi]), and dwelling in a charnel ground (若在塚間 [ruo zai zhong jian]). This means, Bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]), if someone possesses these eleven qualities, they can reach their goal. I will now tell you again, if someone practices this Dharma (法 [fa]) for eleven years, they will become an Anagami (阿那含 [a na han]) in this present life, and in the next life, they will become an Arhat (阿羅漢 [a luo han]). Bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]), let alone eleven years, if one practices this Dharma (法 [fa]) for nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, or one year, they will achieve two fruits: either an Anagami (阿那含 [a na han]) or an Arhat (阿羅漢 [a luo han]). Let alone twelve months, if one practices this Dharma (法 [fa]) for one month, that Bhikshu (比丘 [bi qiu]) will certainly achieve two fruits: either an Anagami (阿那含 [a na han]) or an Arhat (阿羅漢 [a luo han]). Why is that? The Twelve Nidanas (十二因緣 [shi er yin yuan]) all arise from these eleven Dharmas (法 [fa]), namely, birth (生 [sheng]), old age (老 [lao]), sickness (病 [bing]), death (死 [si]), sorrow (愁 [chou]), grief (憂 [you]), suffering (苦 [ku]), and distress (惱 [nao]).
[0795a26] “suǒ wèi ā liàn ruò: qǐ shí, yī chù zuò, yī shí shí, zhèng zhōng shí, bù zé jiā shí, shǒu sān yī, zuò shù xià, lù zuò xián jìng zhī chù, zhe bǔ nà yī, ruò zài zhǒng jiān. shì wèi, bǐ qiū! yǒu rén chéng jiù cǐ shí yī fǎ, biàn néng yǒu suǒ zhì. wǒ jīn fù zhòng gào rǔ, ruò yǒu rén shí yī nián zhōng xué cǐ fǎ, jí yú xiàn shēn chéng ā nà hán, zhuǎn shēn biàn chéng ā luó hàn. zhū bǐ qiū! qiě shě shí yī nián, ruò jiǔ,, bā,, qī,, liù,, wǔ,, sì,, sān,, èr,, yī nián xué cǐ fǎ zhě, biàn chéng èr guǒ: ruò ā nà hán,, ruò ā luó hàn. qiě shě shí èr yuè, ruò néng yī yuè zhī zhōng xiū xíng qí fǎ, bǐ bǐ qiū bì chéng èr guǒ: ruò ā nà hán,, ruò ā luó hàn. suǒ yǐ rán zhě, shí èr yīn yuán jiē chū shí yī fǎ zhōng. suǒ wèi shēng,, lǎo,, bìng,, sǐ,, chóu,, yōu,, kǔ,, nǎo.

[0795b08] "I now teach the Bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]) to be like the Bhikshu Kasyapa (迦葉比丘 [jia ye bi qiu]). If someone practices the Dharma of asceticism (謙苦之法 [qian ku zhi fa]), this practice is difficult to attain. Why is that? The Bhikshu Kasyapa (迦葉比丘 [jia ye bi qiu]) possessed these eleven qualities. Know that the Tathagatas (多薩阿竭 [duo sa a jie]) who attained complete enlightenment (成等正覺 [cheng deng zheng jue]) in the past also possessed these eleven ascetic practices. The Bhikshu Kasyapa (迦葉比丘 [jia ye bi qiu]) now pities all sentient beings. If one makes offerings to the Sravakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]) of the past, one will receive their reward in a later life; if one makes offerings to Kasyapa (迦葉 [jia ye]), one will receive their reward in this present life. If I had not attained unsurpassed complete enlightenment (無上等正覺 [wu shang deng zheng jue]), I would have attained enlightenment (成等正覺 [cheng deng zheng jue]) through Kasyapa (迦葉 [jia ye]). For this reason, Bhikshu Kasyapa (迦葉比丘 [jia ye bi qiu]) surpasses the Sravakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]) of the past. One who can be like Bhikshu Kasyapa (迦葉比丘 [jia ye bi qiu]) has achieved the highest practice. Thus, Bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]), you should practice in this way."

[0795b18] At that time, the Bhikshus (比丘 [bi qiu]) heard what the Buddha said and joyfully put it into practice.
