This is the Chinese Buddhist Canon known as the Taisho, or more specifically the “Taisho Revised Tripitaka” (Takakusu Junjiro 1988). The collection consists of thousands of scrolls including foundational texts such as Agamas, Mahayana Sutras, Vinaya, Abhidharma, Tantras, Jatakas and Avadanas (former birth stoeries), commentaries, histories, catalog...

At one time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park (祇樹給孤獨園 [qi shu gei gu du yuan]) in Savatthi (舍衛國 [she wei guo]).

[0790a08] At that time, many bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]) gathered in the Assembly Hall (普會講堂 [pu hui jiang tang]) and each thought to themselves: "How wonderful and extraordinary the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) is! He knows those who have passed into parinirvana (般涅槃 [ban nie pan]) in the past, their names (姓名 [xing ming]), clans (種族 [zhong zu]), precepts (持戒 [chi jie]), and retinues (翼從 [yi cong]) – all clearly. Their samadhi (三昧 [san mei]), wisdom (智慧 [zhi hui]), liberation (解脫 [jie tuo]), and knowledge of liberation (解脫見慧 [jie tuo jian hui]), as well as the length and shortness of their lives (身壽有長短 [shen shou you zhang duan]), he knows all. How is this, venerable ones? Is it because the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) discriminates the dhamma-sphere (法處 [fa chu]) and is extremely pure, thereby knowing the names (姓字 [xing zi]) and origins (所出之處 [suo chu zhi chu]) of those Buddhas (諸佛 [zhu fu])? Or is it that the devas (諸天 [zhu tian]) come to the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and inform him of this?"

[0790a14] At that time, the World Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), with his divine ear (天耳 [tian er]), clearly heard the many bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]) discussing this matter. He then went to where the bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]) were and sat in the center. At that time, the World Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) addressed the bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "What discussion are you engaged in, gathered here? What dharma (法 [fa]) do you wish to speak of?"

[0790a14] 爾時,世尊以天耳徹聞眾多比丘各興此論,便往至諸比丘所,在中央坐.爾時,世尊告諸比丘: “汝等集此為何等論?欲說何法?”

[0790a17] The bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]) replied to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), saying: "We have gathered here to discuss the essence of the true Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]). Each person is raising this discussion: 'How wonderful and extraordinary the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) is! He is able to know the names (名字 [ming zi]) and clans (姓號 [xing hao]) of the World Honored Buddhas (諸佛世尊 [zhu fu shi zun]) of the past, and the extent of their wisdom (智慧多少 [zhi hui duo shao]) – there is nothing he does not thoroughly comprehend. It is truly wonderful and elegant. How is this, venerable ones? Is it because the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) discriminates the dharma-realm (法界 [fa jie]) and is extremely pure, thereby knowing the names (姓字 [xing zi]) and origins (所出之處 [suo chu zhi chu]) of those Buddhas (諸佛 [zhu fu])? [0790a22] At that time, the World Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) addressed the bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]): "Do you wish to hear about the divine power (神智之力 [shen zhi zhi li]) of the Buddhas (諸佛 [zhu fu]) of the past? Their names (姓字名號 [xing zi ming hao]) and lifespan (壽命長短 [shou ming zhang duan])?"

[0790a27] The World Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) said: "Bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]), you should know that ninety-one kalpas (九十一劫 [jiu shi yi jie]) ago, a Buddha (佛 [fu]) appeared in the world, named Vipassi Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha (毘婆尸如來 [pi po shi ru lai]、至真 [zhi zhen]、等正覺 [deng zheng jue]). Furthermore, thirty-one kalpas (三十一劫 [san shi yi jie]) ago, a Buddha (佛 [fu]) appeared in the world, named Sikhi Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha (式詰如來 [shi jie ru lai]、至真 [zhi zhen]、等正覺 [deng zheng jue]). And within those thirty-one kalpas (三十一劫 [san shi yi jie]) again, there was a Buddha (佛 [fu]) named Vessabhu Tathagata (毘舍羅婆如來 [pi she luo po ru lai]) who appeared in the world. In this Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]), a Buddha (佛 [fu]) appeared in the world, named Kakusandha Tathagata (拘屢孫如來 [ju lu sun ru lai]). Furthermore, in the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]), a Buddha (佛 [fu]) appeared in the world, named Konagamana Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha (拘那含牟尼如來 [ju na han mou ni ru lai]、至真 [zhi zhen]、等正覺 [deng zheng jue]). Furthermore, in the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]), a Buddha (佛 [fu]) appeared in the world, named Kassapa (迦葉 [jia ye]). Furthermore, in the Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]), I appeared in the world, Sakyamuni Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha (釋迦文如來 [shi jia wen ru lai]、至真 [zhi zhen]、等正覺 [deng zheng jue])."

"In ninety-one kalpas (九十一劫 [jiu shi yi jie]),
There was the Buddha Vipassi (佛毘婆尸 [fu pi po shi]).
In thirty-one kalpas (三十一劫 [san shi yi jie]),
Sikhi Tathagata (式詰如來 [shi jie ru lai]) appeared.
Again in that kalpa (彼劫 [bi jie]),
Vessabhu Tathagata (毘舍如來 [pi she ru lai]) manifested.
In this Bhadrakalpa (賢劫 [xian jie]) today,
Four Buddhas (四佛 [si fu]) have again appeared.
Kakusandha (拘孫 [ju sun]), Konagamana (那迦葉 [na jia ye]),
Like the sun illuminating the world.
If you wish to know their names (名字 [ming zi]),
Their titles are all as such.

Vessabhu Tathagata (毘舍羅婆如來 [pi she luo po ru lai]) also arose from the Kshatriya (剎利 [sha li]) caste. Kakusandha Tathagata (拘屢孫如來 [ju lu sun ru lai]) arose from the Brahmin (婆羅門 [po luo men]) caste. "The former Buddhas (前佛 [qian fu]) who appeared,
All arose from the Kshatriya (剎利 [sha li]) caste.
Kakusandha (拘孫 [ju sun]) up to Kassapa (迦葉 [jia ye]),
Arose from the Brahmin (婆羅門 [po luo men]) caste.
The most supreme, unequaled,
I am now the teacher of gods and humans (天人師 [tian ren shi]).
With calm and detached faculties,
I arose from the Kshatriya (剎利 [sha li]) clan (姓 [xing]).

“前佛有現者,  皆出剎利種,

[0790b23] "Vipassi Tathagata (毘婆尸如來 [pi po shi ru lai]) was of the Gotama (瞿曇 [qu tan]) clan. Sikhi Tathagata (式詰如來 [shi jie ru lai]) was also of the Gotama (瞿曇 [qu tan]) clan. Vessabhu (比舍羅婆 [bi she luo po]) was also of the Gotama (瞿曇 [qu tan]) clan. Kassapa Tathagata (迦葉如來 [jia ye ru lai]) was of the Kassapa (迦葉 [jia ye]) clan. Kakusandha (拘樓孫 [ju lou sun]) and Konagamana (拘那含牟尼 [ju na han mou ni]) were also of the Kassapa (迦葉 [jia ye]) clan, the same as above without difference. Maitreya (彌勒 [mi lei]) in succession,
All will attain Buddhahood (成佛道 [cheng fu dao]).
Maitreya (彌勒 [mi lei]) will prophesy about Sikhi Buddha (式佛 [shi fu]),
Simha (師子 [shi zi]) will prophesy about Vessabhu (毘舍 [pi she]),
Sukhavati (柔順 [rou shun]) will prophesy about Kakusandha (拘孫 [ju sun]),
Jvalana (光焰 [guang yan]) will prophesy about Konagamana (牟尼 [mou ni]),
Vimala (無垢 [wu gou]) will prophesy about Kassapa (迦葉 [jia ye]),

Ratnaprabha (寶光 [bao guang]) will attain the three Buddhas (三佛 [san fu]),
And will also prophesy my name (名號 [ming hao]).
