[0715a28] Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) was in the forest outside the city of Vaisali (毘舍離城 [pi she li cheng]), with a great assembly of five hundred bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]).

[0715a28] wén rú shì:

yī shí, fú zài pí shě lí chéng wài lín zhōng, yǔ dà bǐ qiū zhòng wǔ bǎi rén jù.

[0715a28] wen ru shi:

[0715a29] At that time, Venerable Horse-Master (尊者馬師 [zun zhe ma shi]), when it was time, put on his robes and took his bowl, and entered the city to beg for food. At this time, Satyakani Nirgrantha (薩遮尼健子 [sa zhe ni jian zi]) saw Horse-Master (馬師 [ma shi]) coming from afar, and immediately went to him and said: "What meaning does your teacher explain? What instructions does he give? What precepts does he use to teach the Dharma (法 [fa]) to his disciples?"

[0715a29] ěr shí, zūn zhě mǎ shī dào shí, zhe yī chí bō, rù chéng qǐ shí. shì shí, sà zhē ní jiàn zi yáo jiàn mǎ shī lái, jí wǎng yǔ mǎ shī yuē: “rǔ shī shuō hé děng yì? yǒu hé jiào xùn? yǐ hé jiào jiè xiàng dì zi shuō fǎ hū?”

[0715b04] Horse-Master (馬師 [ma shi]) replied: "Brahmin (梵志 [fan zhi])! Form (色 [se]) is impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is non-self. What is non-self is empty. What is empty is not mine, and I am not of it. This is what the wise person learns. Feeling (痛 [tong]), perception (想 [xiang]), mental formations (行 [xing]), and consciousness (識 [shi]) are impermanent. These five aggregates of clinging (五盛陰 [wu sheng yin]) that are impermanent are suffering. What is suffering is non-self. What is non-self is empty. What is empty is not mine, and I am not of it. If you wish to know, my teacher's instructions are like this, and he teaches such meaning to his disciples."

[0715b04] mǎ shī bào yuē: “fàn zhì! sè zhě wú cháng, wú cháng zhě jí shì kǔ, kǔ zhě jí shì wú wǒ, wú wǒ zhě jí shì kōng yě, kōng zhě bǐ bù wǒ yǒu, wǒ fēi bǐ yǒu. rú shì zhě zhì rén zhī suǒ xué yě. tòng,, xiǎng,, xíng,, shí wú cháng, cǐ wǔ shèng yīn wú cháng zhě jí shì kǔ, kǔ zhě jí shì wú wǒ, wú wǒ zhě jí shì kōng, kōng zhě bǐ fēi wǒ yǒu, wǒ fēi bǐ yǒu. qīng yù zhī zhě, wǒ shī jiào jiè qí yì rú shì, yǔ zhū dì zi shuō rú shì yì.”

[0715b10] At that time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) covered his ears with both hands and said: "Stop! Stop! Horse-Master (馬師 [ma shi])! I do not like to hear these words. If ascetic Gautama (瞿曇沙門 [qu tan sha men]) has such a teaching, I truly do not like to hear it. Why is that? According to my view, form (色 [se]) is permanent. According to the ascetic's view, it is impermanent. When will I see ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]) and debate with him, and remove the inverted mind of ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan])?"

[0715b10] shì shí, ní jiàn zi yǐ liǎng shǒu yǎn ěr, ér zuò shì yán: “zhǐ! zhǐ! mǎ shī! wǒ bù lè wén cǐ yǔ. shè qú tán shā mén yǒu cǐ jiào zhě, wǒ shí bù lè wén. suǒ yǐ rán zhě, rú wǒ yì zhě sè zhě shì cháng, shā mén yì zhě wú cháng. hé rì dāng jiàn shā mén qú tán yǔ gòng lùn yì, dāng chú shā mén qú tán diān dào zhī xīn.”

[0715b15] At that time, five hundred youths from the city of Vaisali (毘舍離城 [pi she li cheng]) gathered in one place, wishing to discuss something. At that time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) went to the five hundred youths and said to them: "You all come, let us go together to ascetic Gautama's (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]) abode. Why is that? I wish to debate with ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]), so that he may see the path of right truth. What the ascetic says is that form (色 [se]) is impermanent, but according to my view, form (色 [se]) is permanent. It is like a strong man holding a long-haired sheep in his hand, leading it east or west as he pleases, without difficulty. I am also like this; when I debate with ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]), I can take or leave him as I please, without difficulty. It is like a fierce elephant, violent and with six tusks, playing in the deep mountains, without any difficulty. I am also like this; when I debate with him, there will be no difficulty. It is like two strong men holding a weak one and roasting him over a fire, turning him as they please, without difficulty. I will also have no difficulty debating with him. I can even harm an elephant in debate, let alone a human? Can I not make an elephant go east, west, south, or north? Is that not like a human? Now, this lecture hall's beams and pillars are inanimate objects, yet I can make them move and turn, let alone debating with a person and winning. I will make his blood flow from his face and he will die."

[0715c02] Among them, some youths said: "Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) will never be able to debate with the ascetic. I am only afraid that ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]) will debate with Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi])." Others said: "The ascetic will not debate with Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]); Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) can debate with the ascetic." At this time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) then thought: "If what ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]) says is like Bhikkhu Horse-Master (馬師比丘 [ma shi bi qiu]), then it is enough to compete. If there is any meaning, I will know it when I hear it."

[0715c02] qí zhōng huò yǒu tóng zi ér zuò shì yán: “ní jiàn zi zhōng bù néng yǔ shā mén lùn yì, dàn kǒng shā mén qú tán yǔ ní jiàn zi lùn yì ěr.” huò yǒu zuò shì shuō: “shā mén bù yǔ ní jiàn zi lùn yì, ní jiàn zi néng yǔ shā mén gòng lùn yì.” shì shí, ní jiàn zi biàn zuò shì niàn: “shè lìng shā mén qú tán suǒ shuō rú mǎ shī bǐ qiū zhě, zú dé xiāng chóu. ruò yǒu yì zhě, wén yǐ dāng zhī.”

[0715c08] At this time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]), with five hundred youths surrounding him, went to the World-Honored One's (世尊 [shi zun]) abode, exchanged greetings, and sat down to one side. Then, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) said to the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]): "How is it, Gautama (瞿曇 [qu tan])! What teachings do you give? What precepts do you use to instruct your disciples?"

[0715c08] shì shí, ní jiàn zi jiāng wǔ bǎi tóng zi, qián hòu wéi rào, wǎng zhì shì zūn suǒ, gòng xiāng wèn xùn, zài yī miàn zuò. shì shí, ní jiàn zi bái shì zūn yán: “yún hé, qú tán! yǒu hé jiào jiè, yǐ hé jiào jiè xùn zhū dì zi?”

Yet you now say that form (色 [se]) is permanent. I will ask you in return, and you may answer as you wish. How is it, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi])! Does a wheel-turning holy king (轉輪聖王 [zhuan lun sheng wang]) have freedom in his own country? And can that great king release those who should not be released, and bind those who should not be bound?"

With white hair, wrinkled face, and soiled clothes?" At this time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) remained silent and did not reply. The World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) asked him three times, and he remained silent and did not reply three times. At this time, Mijixingang Lishi (密跡金剛力士 [mi ji jin gang li shi]), holding a vajra (金剛 [jin gang]) pestle in his hand, in the sky, said: "If you do not answer the debater now, your head will be split into seven pieces before the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai])."

Having seen this, he was startled and terrified, with his hair standing on end, and he said to the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]): "I only wish, Gautama (瞿曇 [qu tan]), that you would save me. I will now answer the debate."

You roared like a lion in the great assembly: 'You youths, come with me to Gautama's (瞿曇 [qu tan]) abode, and debate with him. We will subdue him, like holding a long-haired sheep, leading it east or west as we please, without difficulty. Also like a great elephant entering deep water, wandering freely as it pleases, without fear. Also like two strong men holding a weak one and roasting him over a fire, turning him as they please.' Furthermore, you said: 'I can always defeat a great elephant in debate. These beams and pillars, grass and wood are all inanimate objects, yet in debate with them, I can make them bend, stretch, lower, or raise, and also make sweat flow from their armpits.'"

The villagers, men, women, and children, go to the bathing pond and take out these worms, each using tiles or stones to strike and break their hands and feet. Those worms will never be able to return to the water. This Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) is also like this. At first, his intention was fierce, to debate with the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]), with a mind filled with jealousy and arrogance. The Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) has completely removed it, with nothing remaining. This Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) will never again go to the Tathagata's (如來 [ru lai]) abode to debate."

[0716c05] At this time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) said to the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]): "I was ignorant and foolish, unable to discern the truth, and thus I harbored this thought, debating with Gautama (瞿曇 [qu tan]), saying that form (色 [se]) is permanent. Is it like a fierce lion seeing a person from afar, having a fear in its heart? Never! Today, the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) is also like this, without any trace. I was deluded and mad, not yet understanding the profound meaning, and thus dared to provoke. What ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]) has said is truly profound, like a blind person gaining sight, a deaf person hearing clearly, a lost person seeing the way, and a person without eyes seeing forms. Ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]) is also like this, explaining the Dharma (法 [fa]) with countless skillful means. I now take refuge in ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]), the Dharma (法 [fa]), and the bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧 [bi qiu seng]). From now on, for the rest of my life, I ask to be a Upasaka (優婆塞 [you po sai]), and I will not kill living beings. I only wish, Gautama (瞿曇 [qu tan]) and the bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧 [bi qiu seng])! that you would accept my invitation. I wish to offer a meal to the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and the bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧 [bi qiu seng])." At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) remained silent and accepted the invitation.

[0716c05] shì shí, ní jiàn zi bái shì zūn yán: “wǒ jīn yú chī, bù bié zhēn dì, nǎi xìng cǐ huái, yǔ qú tán gòng lùn, yán sè shì cháng. yóu rú měng shòu shī zi yáo jiàn rén lái, yǒu kǒng bù xīn hū? zhōng wú cǐ shì! jīn rì rú lái yì fù rú shì, wú yǒu háo máo. wǒ jīn kuáng huò, wèi míng shēn yì, nǎi gǎn chù ráo. shā mén qú tán suǒ shuō guò duō, yóu rú máng zhě dé yǎn, lóng zhě chè tīng, mí zhě jiàn lù, wú mù jiàn sè. shā mén qú tán yì fù rú shì, wú shù fāng biàn ér wèi shuō fǎ. wǒ jīn zì guī shā mén qú tán,, fǎ,, bǐ qiū sēng, zì jīn yǐ hòu jǐn xíng shòu, tīng wèi yōu pó sāi, bù fù shā shēng, wéi yuàn qú tán jí bǐ qiū sēng! dāng shòu wǒ qǐng, yù fàn fú jí bǐ qiū sēng.” ěr shí, shì zūn mò rán shòu qǐng.

[0716c15] At that time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]), seeing that the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) had silently accepted the invitation, immediately rose from his seat, circumambulated the Buddha (佛 [fu]) three times, prostrated himself at his feet, and departed. He went to the youths of Vaisali (毘舍離 [pi she li]). Having arrived, he said to the youths: "You should provide me with all the provisions you are to offer, give them to me at the proper time, not at an improper time. I have now invited ascetic Gautama (沙門瞿曇 [sha men qu tan]) and the bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧 [bi qiu seng]) to eat tomorrow."

[0716c20] At this time, the youths each prepared food and drink, and brought them to him. At this time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) immediately prepared various delicious foods and drinks that night, laid out good seats, and said: "The time has come, now is the right time, I only wish you would come."

[0716c23] At this time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), when it was time, put on his robes and took his bowl, and led the bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧 [bi qiu seng]) into Vaisali (毘舍離 [pi she li]), and went to Nirgrantha's (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) house. Having arrived, he took his seat, and the bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧 [bi qiu seng]) also sat down in order. At this time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]), seeing that the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and the bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧 [bi qiu seng]) were seated, personally served various foods and drinks. Seeing that the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and the bhikkhu Sangha (比丘僧 [bi qiu seng]) had finished eating, he offered pure water, then took a small seat and sat before the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]), wishing to hear the Dharma (法 [fa]).

[0716c29] At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) gradually explained the profound discourse, which was about: the discourse on giving, the discourse on precepts, the discourse on birth in heaven, that desire is defilement, that sexual misconduct is impure, and that liberation is joy. At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), seeing that Nirgrantha's (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) mind was open and understanding, then explained to Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) the Four Noble Truths (苦 [ku]、習 [xi]、盡 [jin]、道 [dao]) that all Buddhas (諸佛世尊 [zhu fu shi zun]) always teach. At this time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]), while still seated, eradicated all defilements and impurities, and attained the pure Dharma-eye (法眼淨 [fa yan jing]).

[0717a05] At this time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) then spoke this verse:

"Among sacrifices, fire is supreme,
Among poems and books, hymns are foremost,
Among humans, the king is most eminent,
Among all streams, the sea is the source,
Among stars, the moon is brightest,
Among lights, the sun is most excellent.
Above, below, and in the four directions,
All things that arise from the earth,
Heavenly beings and human beings,
The Buddha (佛 [fu]) is the unsurpassed venerable one,
Those who seek his virtues,
The Three Buddhas (三佛 [san fu]) are supreme."

[0717a12] At that time, when the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) had spoken this verse, he immediately rose from his seat and departed.

At this time, Nirgrantha's (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) five hundred disciples, hearing that their teacher had received the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) teaching and transformation, each said to one another: "How is our great teacher, our sect, now following Gautama (瞿曇 [qu tan])?" At this time, the disciples left the city of Vaisali (毘舍離城 [pi she li cheng]) and stood in the middle of the road. At this time, Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) wanted to go to the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) abode to listen to the Dharma (法 [fa]). At this time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) explained the Dharma (法 [fa]) to Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]), helping him to rejoice. Having heard the Dharma (法 [fa]), Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) immediately rose from his seat, prostrated himself at his feet, and departed.

Then, the youths said to the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]): "The Nirgrantha (尼健子 [ni jian zi]) whom the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) taught and transformed, has now been killed by his disciples. Having now passed away, where has he been reborn?"

He will certainly eradicate suffering. Today, having passed away, he has been reborn in the Tavatimsa Heaven (三十三天 [san shi san tian]). Having seen Maitreya Buddha (彌勒佛 [mi lei fu]), he will then eradicate suffering. This is the meaning, you should contemplate practicing it."

One who sees the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]) will never be in vain, just as someone who enters the sea to seek treasures will certainly gain something, and will never return empty-handed. This is also like that; any sentient being who comes to the Tathagata's (如來 [ru lai]) abode will certainly obtain the Dharma-treasure, and will never return empty-handed."
