At one time, the Buddha 佛 [fu] was in the Jeta Grove 祇樹 [qi shu] Anāthapiṇḍika’s Garden 給孤獨園 [gei gu du yuan] in Śrāvastī 舍衛國 [she wei guo]. At that time, the World-Honored One 世尊 [shi zun] was with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty Bhikkhus 比丘眾 [bi qiu zhong].

At that time, in the city of Pūrṇavardhana 滿富城 [man fu cheng], there was a householder 長者 [zhang zhe] named Pūrṇa 滿財 [man cai], who was also exceedingly wealthy and possessed countless treasures: chariots, agate, pearls, amber, crystal, lapis lazuli, elephants, horses, cattle, sheep, servants, and attendants. At that time, Householder Pūrṇa 滿財 [man cai] had a small matter that brought him to Śrāvastī 舍衛城 [she wei cheng], and he went to Householder Anāthapiṇḍika’s 阿那邠邸 [a na bin di] house. Upon arrival, he sat down. Or is it not permissible?”

According to the rules observed by the people of that country, it was said: “If anyone violates the rule, they shall feed six thousand Brahmins 梵志 [fan zhi].” At that time, the householder, knowing he had violated the rule, immediately fed six thousand Brahmins 梵志 [fan zhi]. However, the food consumed by the Brahmins 梵志 [fan zhi] consisted of uniform portions of rabbit meat 月者 [yue zhe] and rabbit meat soup 月者肉羹 [yue zhe rou geng], along with heavily fermented wine 重釀之酒 [zhong niang zhi jiu]. Furthermore, the clothes worn by the Brahmins 梵志 [fan zhi] were either white felt [白疊 [bai die]*毛 [mao]] or coarse wool 毳衣 [cui yi]. According to their Brahmin 梵志 [fan zhi] custom, when entering the country, they would wear their robes over their right shoulder, leaving half their body exposed.

At that time, the chief seat thought to himself: “I am the chief seat among this great assembly, yet my defilements 結使 [jie shi] are not yet exhausted, and I have not attained supernatural powers 神足 [shen zu]. I will not be able to go to the city of Pūrṇavardhana 滿富城 [man fu cheng] to eat tomorrow; however, the lowest seat in the Tathāgata’s 如來 [ru lai] assembly is occupied by Śrāmaṇera Kuṇḍaka 均頭沙彌 [jun tou sha mi], who possesses supernatural powers 神足 [shen zu] and great might, and can go there to accept the invitation. I too should go and accept that invitation.” At that time, the chief seat, with a purified mind, accepted the staff while still on the path of learning.

If even powerful divine elephants hear the lion’s roar, they flee to their respective places, unable to rest. Why? Because the lion, the king of beasts, possesses extreme divine power. These discourses concerned precepts 戒論 [jie lun], generosity 施論 [shi lun], and rebirth in heaven 生天之論 [sheng tian zhi lun], the defiling nature of desires 欲不淨想 [yu bu jing xiang], the impurity of defilements 漏為穢惡 [lou wei hui e], and the importance of leaving home 出家為要 [chu jia wei yao].
