At one time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) was in the Jetavana (祇樹 [qi shu]) Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park (給孤獨園 [gei gu du yuan]), in the country of Śrāvastī (舍衛國 [she wei guo]).

[0580b16] At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) told the bhikkhus (比丘 [bi qiu]), "I will now speak of the Dharma of illumination (燭明之法 [zhu ming zhi fa]) and also the karma of the path to illumination (由燭趣道之業 [you zhu qu dao zhi ye]). Listen carefully! Listen carefully! Contemplate well."

[0580b18] The bhikkhus (諸比丘 [zhu bi qiu]) replied, "Yes, World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun])!"
At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) told the bhikkhus (諸比丘 [zhu bi qiu]), "What is called illumination (燭明 [zhu ming])? It is the complete extinction of greed (貪婬 [tan yin]), anger (瞋恚 [chen hui]), and ignorance (愚癡 [yu chi]). What is called the karma of the path to illumination (由燭趣道之業 [you zhu qu dao zhi ye])? It is right view (正見 [zheng jian]), right intention (正治 [zheng zhi]), right speech (正語 [zheng yu]), right action (正業 [zheng ye]), right livelihood (正命 [zheng ming]), right effort (正方便 [zheng fang bian]), right mindfulness (正念 [zheng nian]), and right concentration (正三昧 [zheng san mei]). This is called the karma of the path to illumination (由燭趣道之業 [you zhu qu dao zhi ye]). I have now explained illumination (燭明 [zhu ming]) and also the karma of the path to illumination (由燭趣道之業 [you zhu qu dao zhi ye]). What the Tathāgata (如來 [ru lai]) should do is now complete. Contemplate and recite well, without laziness. If you do not practice now, you will regret it later, and it will be too late."

爾時,世尊告諸比丘: “彼云何名燭明者?所謂貪婬,, 瞋恚,, 愚癡盡.彼云何名為由燭趣道之業?所謂正見,, 正治,, 正語,, 正業,, 正命,, 正方便,, 正念,, 正三昧,是謂由燭趣道之業.我由此已說燭明,亦說由燭趣道之業,如來所應為者,今已周訖.善念,, 諷誦,勿有懈怠,今不行者,後悔無及.”
