bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavaḥ anyatamasmin pradeśe sṛgālaḥ prāṇī prativasati; sa atilolupaḥ araṇye paryaṭati grāme'pi; so'nupūrveṇa paryaṭannīlarajakagṛhaṃ praviṣṭaḥ; nīlakuṇḍe patitaḥ; tena ghṛṇā gṛhītā; tasya nātidūre ūṣasya puñjastiṣṭhati; sa tasmin patitaḥ pārśvena pārśvaṃ luṭhitaḥ; sa bhūyasyā mātrayā śarīraṃ jugupsamānaḥ pānīye patitaḥ; utthāya saṃprasthitaḥ ādityaraśmispṛṣṭaḥ mecakavarṇo jātaḥ; yāvatsṛgālairdṛṣṭaḥ; te samantādvidrutāḥ; dūre sthitvā kathayanti: kastvaṃ? kuto abhyāgataḥ? iti; sa kathayati: (i 212) ahaṃ śatadrunāmā śakreṇa devendreṇa catuṣpadānāṃ rājye abhiṣiktaḥ iti; sṛgālāḥ saṃlakṣayanti: apūrvarūpo'yaṃ; nūnamevaṃ bhaviṣyati iti; sṛgālaiḥ sarvacatuṣpadānāṃ niveditaṃ; siṃhāḥ saṃlakṣayanti: ko'sāvasmatprativiśiṣṭo yaścatuṣpadānāṃ rājā bhaviṣyati? gacchāmastāvat; svasya yūthapaternivedayāmaḥ iti; teṣāṃ yūthapatiranyatamasmin parvataikadeśe nivasati; sa kesarī paṭṭadhārī; taistasya niveditaṃ; tenānyacatuṣpadasya ājñā dattā: gaccha catuṣpadādhipatiṃ nirīkṣasva kimasau kenaciccatuṣpadena dṛṣṭo na iti; sa tena gatvā pratyavekṣitaḥ apūrvadarśanaḥ; sarvaiścatuṣpadaiḥ parivṛtaḥ sthāpayitvā siṃhān; tena tasya yathādṛṣṭaṃ gatvā niveditaṃ; sa śrutvā siṃhayūthaparivṛtaḥ tasya sakāśamabhigataḥ; so'nekacatuṣpadaparivṛtaḥ hastiskandhābhirūḍhaḥ anvāhiṇḍate; taṃ parivārya siṃhā gacchanti; tato vyāghrāḥ; tato'nye catuṣpadāḥ; teṣāṃ bahirdūreṇa sṛgālāḥ; tasya mātā anyasmin parvatakuñje prativasati; tasyāstena sṛgālaḥ preṣitaḥ: āgaccha putrarājyaṃ pratyanubhava iti; kathayati: kīdṛśaḥ tasya parivāraḥ? iti; sa kathayati: siṃhavyāghrā hastinaśca abhyantaraparivāraḥ; vayaṃ tu bāhyāḥ iti; kathayati: gaccha; vinaṣṭaḥ sa iti; gāthāṃ bhāṣate
sukhaṃ vasāmyasya girernikuñje
svasthā jalaṃ śītamahaṃ pibanti |
tāvatsukhaṃ gacchati hastināsau
śṛṇoti yāvanna sṛgālaśabdam || iti
sa gataḥ; tena teṣāṃ sṛgālānāṃ niveditaṃ: sṛgāla evāyaṃ catuṣpadānāṃ rājā; dṛṣṭāsya mayā mātā, amuṣmin parvatanikuñe prativasati iti; te kathayanti: yadyevaṃ vayamenaṃ jñāsyāmaḥ sṛgālo na iti; dharmatā hyeṣā sṛgālānāṃ yaḥ sṛgālaśabdaṃ śrutvā na vāśate, tasya romāṇi patiṣyanti; sṛgālā vāśitumārabdhāḥ; sa saṃlakṣayati: yadyahaṃ na raumi, niyataṃ mama romāṇi patiṣyanti; yadi (a 502 ) hastiskandhādavatīrya raviṣyāmi, māmete praghātayiṣyanti; atraiva viraumi iti; sa hastiskandha eva vāśitumārabdhaḥ; hastinā jñātaṃ sṛgālo māṃ vahatīti; tenāsau pātayitvā padbhyāṃ marditaḥ; devatā gāthāṃ bhāṣate (i 213)
yasya vābhyantarā bāhyā bāhyā vābhyantarīkṛtāḥ |
sa evaṃ nidhanaṃ yāti hastinā kroṣṭuko yathā || iti
