Chapter 272 - The elephant Dhanapālaka follows submissively the Buddha

tvaṃ tāvadbhadramukha pūrvakeṇa duścaritena pratyavarāyāṃ tiryagyonāvutpannaḥ; sa tvametarhi paraprāṇaharaḥ paraprāṇoparodhena parituṣyasi; itaścyutasya te gatirbhaviṣyasi? upapattiḥ ko'bhisaṃparāyaḥ iti hi bhadramukha sarvasaṃskārā anityāḥ; sarvadharmāḥ anātmānaḥ; śāntaṃ nirvāṇaṃ; mamāntike cittamabhiprasādya adyaiva tiryagyoniṃ virāgayiṣyasi; ityuktvā yena tasya gṛhapaterniveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ; upasaṃkramya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ; dhanapālako'pi bhagavantaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhaḥ; bhagavān praviṣṭaḥ; sa dvāramūle sthitaḥ; bhagavantamapaśyan gṛhaṃ bhaṅktumārabdhaḥ; bhagavatā tadgṛhaṃ sphaṭikamayaṃ nirmitaṃ yatrānāvṛtaṃ buddhabimbaṃ paśyati; sa bhagavnataṃ dṛṣṭvā na bhaṅktumārabdhaḥ; bhagavān saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ bhuktvā dakṣiṇādeśanāṃ kṛtvā prakrāntaḥ; sa bhagavataḥ pṛṣṭhato'nubaddha eva; etatprakaraṇamamātyaiḥ rājño niveditam:; ajātaśatruṇā devadatto'bhihitaḥ: tvayā mama anarthaḥ kṛtaḥ; taṃ hastinamāgamya sīmāntarā rājānaḥ māṃ nābhidravanti; so'pi tvayā vimadīkṛtaḥ iti; sa tūṣṇīmavasthitaḥ; rājñā amātyānāmājñā dattā; yadā bhagavānnirgato bhavati tadā bhavadbhirdhanapālaḥ hastināgo dvāraṃ badhvā sthāpayitavyaḥ yathā bhagavataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ na nirgacchati iti; amātyai api hastidamakānāmājñā dattā dhanapālakaṃ hastināgaṃ dvāraṃ badhvā sthāpayata yathā bhagavataḥ pṛṣṭhato na nirgacchati iti; sa bhagavantamapaśyan pādena śuṇḍāmavaṣṭabhya kālagataḥ; cāturmahārājikeṣu deveṣūpapannaḥ; dharmatā khalu devaputrasya devakanyāyā aciropapannasya trīṇi cittānyutpadyante: kutaścyutaḥ kutropapannaḥ kena karmaṇā iti; sa paśyati nāgebhyaś(i 190) cyutaḥ; praṇīteṣu cāturmahārājikeṣu deveṣūpapannaḥ; bhagavato'ntike cittamabhiprasādya iti
atha nāgapūrviṇo devaputrasyaitadbahavat: na mama pratirūpaṃ syādyadahaṃ paryuṣitaparivāsa eva bhagavantaṃ darśanāya upasaṃkrameyaṃ; yannvahamaparyuṣitaparivāsa eva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrameyamiti; atha (a 494 ) nāgapūrvī devaputraścalavimalakuṇḍaladharo hārārdhahāravibhūṣitagātraḥ tāmeva rātriṃ divyānāmutpalapadmakumudapuṇḍarīkamāndārakāṇāṃ puṣpāṇāmutsaṃgaṃ pūrayitvā sarvaṃ veṇuvanaṃ kalandakanivāpamudāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsya bhagavataṃ puṣpairavakīrya bhagavataḥ purastānniṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya; tataḥ asya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī dharmadeśanā kṛtā yāṃ śrutvā nāgapūrviṇā devaputreṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotaāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtaṃ; sa dṛṣṭasatyastrirudānamudānayati: idamasmākaṃ bhadanta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na pitrā kṛtaṃ; na devatābhiḥ; neṣṭena svajanabandhuvargeṇa; na pūrvapretairna śramaṇabrāhmaṇaiḥ yadbhagavatā asmākaṃ kṛtam; ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrāḥ; laṃghitā asthiparvatāḥ pihitānyapāyadvārāṇi vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi; pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ smo devamanuṣyeṣu āha ca
tavānubhāvātpihitassughoro
hyapāyamārgo bahudoṣayuktaḥ |
apāvṛtā svargagatiḥ supuṇya
nirvāṇamārgaśca mayopalabdhaḥ ||
tvadāśrayāccāptamapetadoṣaṃ
mayādya śuddhaṃ suviśuddhacakṣuḥ |
prāptaṃ ca śāntaṃ padamāryakāntaṃ
tīrṇaśca duḥkhārṇavapāramasmi ||
jagati daityanarāmarapūjitaṃ
vigatajanmajarāmaraṇāmayam |
bhavasahasrasudurlabhadarśanaṃ
saphalamadya mune tava darśanam* ||
avanamya tataḥ pralambahāraḥ
caraṇau dvāvabhivandya jātaharṣaḥ | (i 191)

atha nāgapūrvī devaputro vaṇigiva labdhalābhaḥ sasyasaṃpanna iva kārṣakaḥ śūra iva jitasaṃgrāmaḥ sarvarogaparimukta ivāturo yayā vibhūtyā bhagavatsakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ tayaiva vibhūtyā svabhavanaṃ gataḥ
bhikṣavaḥ pūrvarātrāpararātraṃ jāgarikānuyogamanuyuktā viharanti; tairdṛṣṭo bhagavato'ntike udāro'vabhāsaḥ; yaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kiṃ bhagavanimāṃ rātriṃ bhagavantaṃ darśanāya brahmā sabhāṃpatiḥ śakro devendraḥ catvāro lokapālā upasaṃkrāntāḥ bhagavānāha: na bhikṣavo brahmā sabhāṃpatiḥ na śakro devānāmindraḥ nāpi catvāro lokapālāḥ māṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāntāḥ; api tu yuṣmābhirbhikṣavaḥ sa dhanapālo hastināgaḥ, tāvaccaṇḍaḥ tāvadrabhaso yastathāgatasya vadhāya parākrāntaḥ dṛṣṭo bhadanta: mayā vinītaḥ sa mamāntike cittamabhiprasādya kālagataḥ cāturmahārājijeṣu deveṣūpapannaḥ; sa imāṃ rātriṃ matsakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ; tasya mayā dharmo deśitaḥ; sa dṛṣṭasatyaḥ svabhavanaṃ gataḥ iti
bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kiṃ bhadanta dhanapālakena karma kṛtaṃ (a 494 ) yasya karmaṇo vipākena tiryakṣūpapannaḥ; kiṃ karma kṛtaṃ yena cāturmahārājikeṣu deveṣūpapannaḥ satyadarśanaṃ ca kṛtamiti; bhagavānāha: dhanapālakenaiva hi bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayānyoghavatpratyupasthitānyavaśyabhāvīni; dhanapālena karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni ko'nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni
