Chapter 258 - The story of a hunter
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ brahmadatto nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca; tena khalu samayena vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ nātidūre anyatarasminnāśramapade mūlapuṣpaphalasalilasaṃpanne nānāvihaganikūjite ṛṣiḥ prativasati; kaṣṭatapāḥ phalamūlāmbubhakṣaḥ ajinavalkalavāsāḥ; tasya cāśramapadasya sāmantakena mṛgalubdhako mṛgān praghātya praghātya jīvikāṃ kalpayati; sa tasya ṛṣeḥ kālena kālamupasaṃkrāmati; tasyāsau ṛṣiḥ śrāntasya mūlaphalairupasaṃhāraṃ karoti; apyevāyaṃ lubdhako matsarī (i 171) samīpanivāsino mṛgānna praghātayediti; tayoḥ parasparaṃ pitṛputreti saṃjñā samutpannā;lubdhako ṛṣiṃ pitṛvādena samudācarati; ṛṣirapi lubdhakaṃ putravādena; yāvadapareṇa samayena rājā brahmadattaḥ kālyamevotthāya mṛgavadhāya nirgataḥ; tena mṛgaḥ śaraparamparayā tāḍitaḥ utpatitaḥ taya ṛṣerāśramapadaṃ praviṣṭaḥ; tatrāpi rājñā nārācena marmaṇi tāḍitaḥ kālagataḥ; sa ṛṣiḥ krodhaparyavasthitaḥ kathayati: kalirājastvaṃ durācāro yena me śaraṇopagato mṛgaḥ praghātitaḥ iti; evamukte sa rājā dveṣaparyavasthānaniviṣṭabuddhiramātyānāṃ kathayati: bhavanto yo rājānaṃ kṣatriyaṃ mūrdhābhiṣiktaṃ paribhāṣate tasya ko daṇḍaḥ iti; amātyāḥ kathayanti: vadho daṇḍaḥ iti; rājā kathayati: yadyevaṃ parityakto me ayamṛṣiḥ; amātyāḥ ṛṣiṃ praghātayitumārabdhāḥ; daivātsa lubdhakastasya ṛṣeḥ sakāśamāgataḥ; āgata eva sa saṃlakṣayati; mama jīvataḥ kathamṛṣiḥ praghātyate iti; sa yoddhumārabdhaḥ; ṛṣirniṣpalāyitaḥ; sa mahatā balakāyena praghātitaḥ
