Chapter 239 - The story of Vipaśyin

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavaḥ ekanavate kalpe vipaśyī nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi, vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavidanuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān; sa dvāṣaṣṭibhikṣusahasraparivāraḥ janapadacārikāṃ caran bandhumatīrājadhānīmanuprāptaḥ; tena khalu samayena bandhumatyāṃ rājadhānyāṃ saṃbahulā goṣṭhikāḥ prativasanti; taiḥ śrutaṃ vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ dvāṣaṣṭibhikṣusahasraparivāraḥ janapadacārikāṃ caranihānuprāptaḥ iti; śrutvā ca punaḥ sarve saṃbhūya yena vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhastenopasaṃkrāntāḥ; upasaṃkramya vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇāḥ; ekāntaniṣaṇṇān sambahulān goṣṭhikān vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati; anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya (i 148) samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm; atha sambahulā goṣṭhikāḥ utthāyāsanādekāṃsamuttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhastenāñjaliṃ praṇamayya vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhamidamavocan: adhivāsayatvasmākaṃ bhagavān traimāsīṃ cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkāraiḥ sārdhaṃ saṃghena iti | adhivāsayati vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ saṃbahulānāṃ goṣṭhikānāṃ tūṣṇīṃbhāvena
atha saṃbahulā goṣṭhikā vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya tūṣṇīṃbhāvena adhivāsanāṃ viditvā bhagavato bhāṣitamabhinandyānumodya bhagavato pādau śirasā vanditvā uttahāyāsanātprakrāntaḥ; te saṃsthāgāre sannipatya sañjalpaṃ kartumārabdhāḥ; kathamasmābhirbhavanto bhagavān bhojayitavyaḥ kiṃ saṃbhūya āhosvidekaikena iti; tatraike kathayati; yadi dine dine saṃbhūya bhojayitavyo'sau asmākaṃ kṛṣikarmāntāḥ samucchetsyanti; tadyadi bhavatāmabhirucitaṃ vāreṇa vāraṃ bhojayāmaḥ iti; te vāreṇa vāraṃ gaṇādhīnaṃ bhojayitumārabdhāḥ; yathāvibhavataścātmīyamasyānuprayacchanti; tatraiko brāhmaṇadārako daridraḥ; sa mātuḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ kathayati: amba goṣṭhikaiḥ kriyākāraḥ kṛtaḥ, bhagavān vāreṇa vāraṃ bhojayitavyaḥ iti; tadahaṃ tanuvibhavaḥ; kathaṃ mayā bhojayitavyaḥ iti; kathayati: putra yadyevamapaścimaṃ divasaṃ gṛhāṇa; tvamiyatā kālena kiṃcitsamudānayiṣyasi; gaṇasantakācca kiṃcidutsadanadharmakaṃ bhaviṣyati iti; tena paścimo divaso gṛhītaḥ; tatra gaṇasantakādutsadanadharmakaṃ prabhūtāṃ saṃpannaṃ; tenāpi kiṃcitsamudānītaṃ; tatastena (a 477 ) layanaṃ kāritaṃ; tadvastrairācchāditaṃ; koṇeṣu paṃca kārṣāpaṇaśatāni sthāpitāni; ṛkṣacarma cāsya saṃpannaṃ; tadapi layanadvāre prajñaptaṃ; tataḥ paṃcaśatikaṃ pākaṃ sādhayitvā mahatā satkāreṇa vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddho bhojitaḥ; pādayośca praṇipatya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtamanenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo jāyeya; kadācidanāstīrṇe pṛthivīpradeśe pādau sthāpayeyaṃ; yādṛśāni ca vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya suvarṇavarṇāni caturaṅgulamātrāṇi romāṇi pādatalayorjātāni, mamāpyevaṃvidhāni syuḥ; evaṃvidhānāṃ ca guṇānāṃ lābhī syāṃ; evaṃvidhameva śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ; virāgayeyamiti (i 149)
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ? yo'sau goṣṭhiko brāhmaṇadārakaḥ eṣa evāsau śroṇaḥ koṭīviṃśaḥ tena kālena tena samayena; yadanena vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya kārān kṛtvā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ, tasya karmaṇo vipākena āḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jātaḥ; pādayoścāsya suvarṇavarṇāni caturaṅgulamātrāṇi romāṇi jātāni; ita ekanavataṃ kalpamupādāya na kadācidanāstīrne pṛthivīpradeśe pādau sthāpitau; jātamātrasya cāsya viṃśatihiraṇyakoṭyo labdhāḥ; mama ca śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtaṃ; iti hi bhikṣavaḥ ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ; ekāntaśuklānāmekāntaśuklaḥ; vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ; tasmāttarhi bhikṣavaḥ ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca ekāntaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogāḥ karaṇīyaḥ ityevaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam*
