Chapter 225 - The story of Kalyāṇakārin

mahāsamudragamanīyaṃ paṇyamādāya saṃprasthitaḥ; so'nupūrveṇa grāmanigamarājarāṣṭradhānīṣu paṭṭanānyavalokya samudratīramanuprāptaḥ; sa paṃcabhiḥ purāṇaśatairvahanaṃ kṛtvā paṃca pauruṣeyān gṛhītvā āhārakaṃ nirhārakaṃ nāvikaṃ kaivartaṃ karṇadhāraṃ ca trirghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā mahāsamudramavatīrṇaḥ; saṃprasthite vahane bhrāturakalyāṇakāriṇaḥ kathayati: mahāsamudramadhyagatānāṃ yadi tadvahanaṃ vipadyeta, mama gale lageḥ; kāhalībhaviṣyasi iti; sa kathayati: śobhanamevaṃ bhavatu iti; yāvattadvahanamanuguṇena vāyunā ratnadvīpamanuprāptaṃ; karṇadhāraḥ kathayati: śṛṇvantu bhavanto jambūdvīpakā vaṇijaḥ; yo'sau śrūyate ratnadvīpo nāma vajravaiḍūryendranīlamarakatādīnāṃ ratnānāmākaraḥ iti tamanuprāptāḥ sma; yatheṣṭaṃ ratnasaṅgrahaṃ kuruta iti; tatastaiḥ pramuditamanobhiḥ upaparīkṣya, tadvahanaṃ ratnānāṃ pūritaṃ (i 113) tadyathā tilataṇḍulakolakutthānāṃ; nipuṇā bhavanti bodhisatvāḥ kuśalaśca; kalyāṇakāriṇā kumāreṇa mahārhāṇi ratnāni kaṭyāmupanibaddhāni; yāvattadvahanaṃ viparivṛttaṃ; tīrasya nātidūre makareṇa matsyajātena anayena vyasanamāpāditaṃ; tataḥ akalyāṇakārī kalyāṇakāriṇo gale lagnaḥ; sa tena mahatā yatnena uttāritaḥ; sa tāvatkṛtapariṣramo middhamavakrāntaḥ; tasya parivartamānasya akalyāṇakāriṇā kaṭyupanibaddhāni ratnāni dṛṣṭāni; sa saṃlakṣayati: ayaṃ nāma ratnāni gṛhītvā gamiṣyati; ahaṃ riktapāṇirgamiṣyāmi; iti viditvā tena tasya gāḍhamiddhāvaṣṭabdhasya tāni ratnānyapahṛtāni; kaṇṭakaiśca akṣiṇī utpāṭite; sa tamandhaṃ samudratīre chorayitvā prakrāntaḥ; daivātgopālakā gāścārayantastaṃ pradeśamanuprāptāḥ; tairasau dṛṣṭaḥ pṛṣṭaśca: bhoḥ puruṣa kastvamīdṛśaḥ iti; tena yathāvṛtaṃ samākhyātaṃ; śrutvā teṣāṃ kāruṇyamutpannaṃ; tairasau pālabandhorgṛhe nītaḥ; sa tena viṇāmāśrāvayitumārabdhaḥ; tasya pālabandhorbhāryā yauvanamadākṣepātvīṇāsvanaṃ śrutvā taṃ prārthayituṃ pravṛttā; sa kṛtaghnaceṣṭitamanusmṛtya karṇau pidhāyāvasthito nādhivāsayati; kāmādhyavasitānāṃ nāsti kiṃcidakaraṇīyamiti tayā svāmi vigrāhitaḥ: māmayamandhaḥ puruṣaḥ prārthayati iti; (a 465 ) īdṛśānāṃ tvaṃ saṃgrahaṃ karoṣi iti; pratikruṣṭametadvairāṇāṃ yaduta strīvairaṃ; sa saṃlakṣayati: kṛtanigraho'yaṃ; nāsti kiṃcidasya karaṇīyamṛte nirvāsanāditi; sa tena gṛhānnirvāsitaḥ rathyāvīthīcatvaraśṛṅgāṭakeṣu vīṇayā jīvikāṃ kalpayati; tasya pitā kālagataḥ; bhrātā asya akalyāṇakārī rājyaiśvaryādhipatye pratiṣṭhitaḥ; so'pyanupūrveṇa sīmāntarasya rājño nagaramanuprāptaḥ yenāsya pūrvaṃ duhitā dattā; ca mahatī saṃvṛttā; tasyā nānādeśanivāsino rājaputrāḥ purohitaputrāśca varakā āgacchanti; sāpi tātenocyate: putri yasya tvaṃ dattā sa kalyāṇakārī kumāro mahāsamudraṃ (i 114) gataḥ; tatraiva ca anayena vyasanamāpannaḥ; tava cedānīṃ yācakā āgacchanti; yasyaiva tvāṃ na dāsyāmi sa visukho bhaviṣyati; kathamatra pratipattavyam? iti; kathayati: tāta yadyevaṃ nagaraśobhāṃ kāraya; ahaṃ svayaṃvarāya avatarāmi iti; rājā kathayati: putri evaṃ kuruṣva iti; tato nānādeśeṣu nānādhiṣṭhāneṣu
svayaṃvaraṇaṃ śrāvitaṃ; tacca nagaramapagatapāṣāṇaśarkarakaṭhallaṃ vyavasthāpitaṃ candanavāripariṣiktaṃ surabhidhūpaghaṭikopanibaddhamucchritadhvajapatākamāmuktapaṭṭadāmakalāpaṃ nānāpuṣpāvakīrṇaṃ ramaṇīyaṃ devānāmiva nandanavanodyānaṃ; ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ ca kāritaṃ: śṛṇvantu bhavato nagaranivāsinaḥ paurā, nānādeśābhyāgataśca janakāyaḥ; śvo rājakumārī svayaṃvarāya avatariṣyati; tadyuṣmābhiryathāvibhavena sannipatitavyamiti; tataḥ prabhātāyāṃ rajanyāṃ rājakumārī nānālaṃkāravibhūṣitā anekakumārīparivṛttā vanadevateva kusumitavanamadhye atīva vibhrājamānā mahatā śrīsamudāyena madhye nagarasya anekeṣu prāṇiśatasahasreṣu sannipatiteṣu svayaṃvarāya avatīrṇā; sa kalyāṇakārī anyatamasmin pradeśe vīṇāmāśrāvayaṃstiṣṭhati; karmāṇyeva satvānāṃ parasparaṃ saṃyojakāni; balavadapi hetubalaṃ pratyabalamapekṣata iti; tataḥ rājakumārī vīṇāsvanāvarjitahṛdayā vīṇāvādake kalyāṇakāriṇyākṣiptā; tayā tasya sragdāma kṣiptam: eṣa mama svāmī iti; janakāyo durmanāḥ saṃvṛttaḥ; kecidvegamasahamānāḥ avadhyātumārabdhāḥ: kathaṃ nāma nānādeśābhyāgatān rājāmātyapurohitaputrānanyāṃśca nagaranivāsinaḥ pradhānapuruṣān pratyākhyāya rājakumāryā evaṃrūpayauvanakalāsaṃpadyuktayā andhalakaḥ svāmī vṛtaḥ iti; pauruṣeyairdaurmanasyavimukhai rājño niveditaṃ; deva kumāryā svayaṃvarāvatīrṇayā svāmī vṛtaḥ iti; rājā kathayati: kīdṛśaḥ? deva andhalakaḥ; so'pi śrutvā durmanāḥ saṃvṛttaḥ; tatastena āhūyoktā; putri saṃvidyante rājāno dhaninaḥ śreṣṭhinaḥ sārthavāhāḥ amātyaputrāḥ purohitaputrāś(a 466 ) ca rūpayauvanavibhavasaṃpannāḥ; kasmāttvayā evaṃvidhaḥ svāmī vṛtaḥ? iti; kathayati: tāta sa eva me rocate iti; rājā kathayati: yadyevaṃ kimarthaṃ tiṣṭhasi iti; tasya sakāśamupasaṃkrāntā kathayati: tvaṃ mayā svāmī (i 115) vṛtaḥ iti; na te śobhanaṃ kṛtaṃ; kiṃ tvaṃ cintayasi? eṣo'ndhalakaḥ; ahaṃ parapuruṣaiḥ sārdhaṃ paricārayiṣyāmi it: kathayati: nāhamevaṃvidhasya karmaṇaḥ kāriṇī iti; sa kathayati: kathaṃ jñāyate? satyopayācanaṃ kartumārabdhā: yena satyena satyavacanena tasya kalyāṇakāriṇo rājakumārasya tava cāntike rāgaḥ samutpannaḥ, nānyasya kasyacit, anena satyena satyavacanena tavaikamakṣi yathāpaurāṇaṃ syāditi; satyādhiṣṭhānasamanantarameva tasyaikaṃ cakṣuḥ yathāpaurāṇaṃ saṃvṛttaṃ: sa kathayati: sa evāhaṃ kalyāṇakārī; akalyāṇakāriṇā bhrātrā etāṃ daśāṃ nītaḥ; kathayati: kathaṃ jñāyate tvamevāsau kalyāṇakārī iti; so'pi satyopayācanaṃ kartumārabdhaḥ: yena satyena satyavacanena tasya mamākṣiṇī samutpāṭayato'ntike īṣadapi na praduṣṭaṃ cittaṃ me, anena satyena satyavacanena mama dvitīyamakṣi yathāpaurāṇaṃ bhavediti; tasya saha satyayācanayā dvitīyamakṣi yathāpaurāṇaṃ saṃvṛttaṃ; tataḥ rājakumārī kalyāṇakāriṇamavikalendriyamādāya rājñaḥ sakāśaṃ gatā kathayati: tāta eṣa evāsau kalyāṇakārī iti; rājā na śraddhatte; tena yathāvṛttamārocitaṃ; rājā paraṃ vismayamāpannaḥ; tatastenāsau duhitā mahatā śrīsamudāyena pariṇītā; sa ca kalyāṇakārī mahatā balasamudāyena tannagaraṃ gatvā akalyāṇakāriṇaṃ cyāvayitvā pitṛke rājye pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ.
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ? yo'sau kalyāṇakārī ahameva saḥ tena kālena tena samayena; yo'sau akalyṇakārī eṣa eva sa devadattaḥ tena kālena tena samayena; tadāpyeṣa akṛtajñaḥ akṛtavedī; etarhyapyeṣa akṛtajña akṛtavedī; punarapyeṣa yathā akṛtajña akṛtavedī tacchrūyatāṃ.
