Chapter 184 - The story of Madhuvāsiṣṭha

buddho bhagavānnādikāyāṃ viharati guñjikāvasathe; tena khalu samayena saṃbahulāni pātrāṇyabhyavakāśa upari kṣiptāni; bhagavataśca pātram; athānyatamo markataḥ śālavṛkṣādavatīrya yena pātrāṇi (a 442 ) tenopasaṃkramati; bhikṣavastaṃ vārayanti, bhetsyati pātrāṇi iti; tatra bhagavān bhikṣūṇāmāmantrayate sma: bhikṣavaḥ etaṃ markaṭaṃ vārayata; tatkasya hetoḥ; naiṣa bhetsyate pātrāṇi; atha sa markaṭo yena bhagavataḥ pātraṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ; upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pātramādāya taṃ śālāvṛkṣamabhiruhya kṣaudrasya madhuno'neḍakasya pūrayitvā śanairmandamandaṃ śālavṛkṣādavatīrya bhagavata upanāmayati; tasya bhagavānna pratigṛhṇāti saprāṇakamiti kṛtvā; atha sa markaṭa ekānte prakramya (i 48) niṣprāṇakaṃ kṛtvā bhagavata upanāmayati; tasya bhagavānna pratigṛhṇāti akalpikamiti kṛtvā; atha sa markaṭa ekānte prakramya śītalena vāriṇā pariṣicya bhagavata upanāmayati; tasya bhagavān pratigṛhṇāti kṛtakalpikamiti; atha sa markaṭa pratigṛhītaṃ me bhagavatā madhupātramiti viditvā hṛṣṭatuṣṭapramuditaḥ udagraprītisaumanasyajātaḥ prāñjalīkṛtaḥ pratipuṭakaṃ pratyavasṛto nartamānaḥ bhagavantaṃ namasyamānaḥ bhagavati prasādajāto bhagavantaṃ nirīkṣamāṇaḥ pṛṣṭhato nāvalokayati; kūpe patitaḥ; kālagataḥ; nādikāyāmeva ṣaṭkarmanirate brāhmaṇakule upapannaḥ; yameva divasaṃ pratisandhirgṛhītastameva divasaṃ madhuvarṣaṃ patitaṃ; pitrā cāsya naimittikā āhūya pṛṣṭāḥ; te kathayanti: asya satvasyānubhāva iti; yāvadasau brāhmaṇī aṣṭānāṃ va nāvānāṃ māsānāmatyayātprasūtā; dārako jātaḥ; yameva divasaṃ jātastamapi divasaṃ madhuvarṣaṃ patitaṃ; tasya jñātayaḥ saṃgamya samāgamya trīṇi saptakānyekaviṃṣatidivasān vistareṇa jātasya jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate, kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāma iti; jñātaya ūcuḥ: ayaṃ dārako yameva divasaṃ mātuḥ kukṣimavakrāntastameva divasaṃ madhuvarṣaṃ patitaṃ; yamapi divasaṃ jātaḥ tamapi divasaṃ madhuvarṣaṃ patitaṃ; vāsiṣṭhasagotraśca; tasmādbhavatu dārakasya madhuvāsiṣṭha iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitaṃ; sa unnīto vardhito mahān saṃvṛttaḥ; yadā mahān saṃvṛttaḥ tadā svyākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajitaḥ; tasya pravrajitasyāpi sataḥ dine dine trīṇi madhupātrāṇi saṃpadyante; sa teṣāmekaṃ bhagavato'nuprayacchati; dvitīyaṃ saṃghāya; tritīyaṃ sapremakaiḥ sārdhaṃ paribhuṅkte.
bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kiṃ bhadantāyuṣmatā madhuvāsiṣṭhena karma kṛtaṃ yasya karmaṇo vipākenāsya dine dine trīṇi pātrāṇi saṃpadyante iti; bhagavānāha: madhuvāsiṣṭhenaiva bhikṣavaḥ (i 49) karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayānyoghavatpratyupasthitāni pūrvavadyāvadphalanti khalu dehināṃ; dṛṣṭo yuṣmābhirbhikṣavaḥ sa markaṭaḥ yena tathāgatasya madhupātramupanāmitaṃ? (a 443 ) dṛṣṭo bhadanta; yo'sau markaṭa eṣa evāsau madhuvāsiṣṭhaḥ tena kālena tena samayena; tena tathāgatasya madhupātramupanāmitaṃ; tasya karmaṇo vipākena ṣaṭkarmanirate brāhmaṇakule upapannaḥ pratisandhau cāsya jātau ca madhuvarṣaṃ patitaṃ; yāvadetarhyapi divase divase trīṇi madhupātrāṇi saṃpadyante; iti hi bhikṣavaḥ ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ pūrvavadyāvadekāntaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ; tatkasya hetoḥ; yadi madhuvāsiṣṭho bhikṣuḥ pūrvaṃ mahāsamudraṃ madhvadhimucyate; tadapi madhu syāt; evaṃ hi bhikṣavaḥ aprameyā tathāgatadakṣiṇā iti.
bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kiṃ bhadantāyuṣmatā upālinā karma kṛtaṃ yasya karmaṇo vipākena rājenāpitaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ; bhagavānāha: upālinaiva bhikṣavaḥ aprameyā tathāgatadakṣiṇā iti pūrvamanyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pūrvavadyāvadphalanti khalu dehināṃ.
