Chapter 139 - Sundara, the student, and Bhadrā, the harlot

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ brahmadatto nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati, ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca; tena khalu samayena vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ bhadrā nāma rūpājīvinī prativasati; sundarāśca nāmnā māṇavakaḥ; sa tasyāḥ sakāśamupasaṅkrāntaḥ kathayati: bhadre āgaccha paricārayāma iti; kathayati; santi te pañca kārṣāpaṇaśatānīti; (a 423 ) sa kathayati, na santi; gaccha, pañca kārṣāpaṇaśatāni gṛhītvā āgaccha; tasya vibhavo nāsti; sa tasyāmatyarthamadhyavasitaḥ; kālena kālaṃ nānāvicitrāṇi puṣpāṇi, phalāni copanāmyati; tasyāstasminnanunaya utpannaḥ; yāvadapareṇa samayena vārāṇasyāṃ parvā pratyupasthitaḥ; sarvāsstriyo vastramālyālaṅkāravibhūṣitāḥ svakasvakeṣu krīḍāratiharṣabahulā avatiṣṭhante; dṛṣṭvā sundaro māṇavaḥ paritasyati; bhadrā rūpājīvinī saṃlakṣayati: adya vārāṇaseyā manuṣyā vastrālaṅkāravibhūṣitā svakasvakābhiḥ strībhiḥ sārdhaṃ paricārayiṣyanti; sundaro māṇavakaḥ mayā sārdhaṃ paricārayiṣyati; caivaṃ cintayati; sundaraśca māṇavakastaṃ pradeśamanuprāptaḥ; taṃ dṛṣṭvā pūrvopakārasañjanitasaumanasyā kathayati: māṇava gaccha; sugandhāni puṣpāṇyādāyāgaccha; mayā sārdhaṃ paricārayiṣyasīti; sa naṣṭopalabdhaprāṇa iva vismayāvarjitasantatiḥ prakrāntaḥ; tasyā rūpayauvanacāturyaguṇān vikalpayanmadāviṣṭaḥ kṛtsnāṃ rātriṃ jāgaritaḥ; prabhātāyāṃ rajanyāmatyarthamiddharparyākulīkṛtanayanastāvatsupto yāvadādhityodaya iti; sarvopayogāya lokena yadā sarvāṇi puṣpāṇyuccitāni tadā prativibuddhaḥ; puṣpanimittamitaś(208) cāmutaśca paribhramati; nārāgayati; śirīṣapuṣpāṇyādāya tasyāḥ sakāśamupasaṅkrāntaḥ; gāthāṃ bhāṣate:
alaso'jinadhāryakarmaśīlo
baṭukaḥ sundarako nirardhamāṣaḥ |
paripuṣpitapādape'dya kāle
pradadātyeṣa hi yacchirīṣapuṣpam ||
iti viditvā kathayati: gaccha anyāni puṣpāṇyādāyāgaccheti; kāmān khalu pratisevamānasya saṃyojanānyupacayaṃ gacchantīti sa pravṛddhakāmarāgo grīṣmaṇāṃ paścime māse vyabhre dine vigatabalāhake, sthite madhyāhnasamaye, nagarādativiprakṛṣṭadeśeṣvaraṇyeṣu vaktrāparavaktraṃ gāyan puṣpāṇyuccinoti; rājā ca brahmadatto mṛgavadhāya nirgataḥ; sa tīkṣṇārkaraśmisantāpitaḥ chāyāyāḥ śītalaṃ pradeśamanuprāptaḥ; tasya gītaśabdaṃ śrutvā gāthāṃ bhāṣate:
ūrdhvaṃ tapati ādityaḥ adhastāddahati vālukā |
kasmādgāyasi gātrāṇi na te dahati ātapaḥ || iti;
sundarako'pi gāthāṃ bhāṣate:
na māṃ tāpayatyādityaḥ saṅkalpāstāpayanti mām |
kāryākāryāṇi loke'smiṃstāpayanti tu nātapaḥ || iti;
rājā saṃlakṣayati: nūnamayaṃ māṇavaḥ śaityakathāsu kṛtāvī yena sthite madhyāhnasamaye puṣpāṇyuccinotīti; sa tenābhihitaḥ: kuru māṇava śaityāṃ tāvatkathām; śṛṇomīti; sa saṃlakṣayati; nūnamasya rājñaḥ śarīradāhaḥ, yenaivaṃ vadatīti; tena tasya vicitrā śaityakathā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā rājñaḥ śarīradāhaḥ prativigataḥ; rājā abhiprasannaḥ; amātyān pṛcchati; bhavanto yo rājño kṣatriyasya mūrdhābhiṣiktasya jīvitamanuprayacchati, tasya kaḥ pratyupakāraḥ? deva upārdharājyam; tatassa rājñā abhihitaḥ; māṇava adya rājakule vāsaṃ kalpayasva; upārdharājyaṃ te prayacchāmi iti; tasya rājakule praṇītaṃ śayanāsanaṃ dattam; sa tasmin śayitaḥ bhadrāmanusmṛtya cintayati; tadupārdharājyaṃ gṛhṇāmi yatra bhadrā rūpājīvinī iti; bhūyaḥ saṃlakṣayati: kīdṛśaḥ sa rājā yatra upārdharājyaṃ bhuṅkte; yanvahamenaṃ jīvitādvyaparopayeyamiti; punaḥ saṃlakṣayati: (a 424 ) alamanena rājyena yadrājānaṃ praghātya iti; gmathāṃ ca bhāṣate: (209)
aprāpte arthatarṣaḥ prāpte cārthe na tarṣavinivṛttiḥ |
aprāpte ca vighātastasmādarthe matiranarthāya || iti
yāvatprabhātā rajanī saṃvṛttā, sa vipratisārajātaḥ śayanādavatīrya kṛṣṇājīnamāstīrya bhūmau śayitaḥ; prabhātāyāṃ rajanyāṃ rājā kathayati: bhavantaḥ śabdayata taṃ māṇavam; upārdharājyaṃ tasmai anuprayacchāmīti; rājadūtā gatāḥ paśyanti; mahāśayanādavatīrya bhūmau śayitaḥ; dṛṣṭvā ca punaraprasādaṃ pravedayanto rājñaḥ sakāśaṃ gatāḥ kathayanti: deva nāsāvarhati rājyam; rājā kathayati, kimartham? te kathayanti: deva yo hi nāma praṇītaṃ śayanāsanamapahāya bhūmau kṛṣṇājine śayitastasya hīnādhimuktasya kiṃ rājyeneti; rājā kathayati: bhavantaḥ sa prājñaḥ, kāraṇenātra bhavitavyam; śabdayata iti; tairasau śabditaḥ: rājñā pṛṣṭaḥ: bho māṇava kimarthaṃ tvaṃ mahāśayanāsanādkṛṣṇājine śayita iti; tena yathāvṛttaṃ rājñe samākhyātam; tataḥ kathayati: deva anujānīhi pravrajāmīti; rājā kathayati: samayato'nujānāmi; yadi pravrajitvā kiñcidguṇagaṇamadhigacchasi mamārocayitavyamiti; tena pratijñātamevaṃ bhavatviti; tatastena śāntaṃ pradeśaṃ gatvā anācāryakeṇa anupādhyāyakena pratyekabodhiranugatā; sa pratyekabuddhaḥ saṃlakṣayati; mayā tasya rājñaḥ pratijñātam; gacchāmi tāṃ pūrvikāṃ pratijñāṃ niryātayāmi iti; sa rājñaḥ sakāśaṃ gatvā upari vihāyasamabhyudgamya jvalanatapanavarṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kartumārabdhaḥ; rājā tasya pādayornipatya gāthāṃ bhāṣate:
paśyālpakalpaprabhavaṃ vipākaṃ
mahān viśeṣo hyupagena labdhaḥ |
lābhāḥ sulabdhā bata māṇavena
yatprāvrajatkiṃ kuśalaṃ gaveṣī ||
