Chapter 137 - Upālin, the barber

śākyānāmupālī nāma kalpakaḥ rājñā śuddodanena teṣāṃ pravrajatāṃ keśāvaropakaḥ preṣitaḥ; bhadrikasya śākyarājasya keśānavatārayan so'śrudurdinavadano bāṣpoparuddhyamānahṛdayo muhur(205) niśvāsaparāyaṇaḥ keśānavatārayati; bhadrikaḥ śākyarājaḥ kathayati: upālin kimarthaṃ rodiṣi? sa karuṇadīnavilambitairakṣaraiḥ kathayati: deva mayā jambūdvīpapradhānānāṃ puruṣāṇāmupasthānaṃ kṛtvā, idānīṃ prākṛtapuruṣāṇāmupasthānaṃ kartavyaṃ bhaviṣyati; kāmaṃ prāṇaviyogaḥ, na yuṣmābhiḥ parityaktasya jīvitamiti; bhadrikaḥ śākyarājaḥ kathayati: alamupālin darśitastvayā svāmibhaktyanurāgaḥ; niyaccha śokam; ahaṃ tathā kariṣyāmi yathā prākṛtapuruṣāṇāmupasthānaṃ na kariṣyasi; iti viditvā tenaikasmin pradeśe paṭakaḥ prasāritaḥ, śākyakumārāśca abhihitāḥ: śṛṇvantu bhavantaḥ kumārā eṣo'smākamupālī kalpakaḥ kṛtopasthānaḥ; tadasya jīvikānimittamalaṅkāraṃ paṭe sthāpayata; nāsmābhiḥ punaragāre vastavyamiti; tairhārārdhahārakaṭakakeyūrakuṇḍalānāṃ nānāratnapratyuptānāmalaṅkāraviśeṣāṇāṃ paṭake mahān rāśiḥ kṛtaḥ; upālinā teṣāmanupūrveṇa keśāvaropaṇaṃ kṛtam; te snātuṃ gatāḥ; sa saṃlakṣayati: ime tāvatkumārāḥ kulavibhavayauvanopetāḥ sphītānyantaḥpurāṇi, sphītāni kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇyapāsya pravrajitāḥ; ahamasminnalaṅkāramātre sakto'nayena vyasanamāpatsye; yadyahaṃ na nīcakulotpannaḥ syām, ahamapi svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyodyujyeyaṃ, ghaṭeyaṃ, vyāyaccheyam, oghānāmuttaraṇāya, yogānāṃ samatikramaṇāyeti
dharmatā hyeṣā yathā buddhā bhagavantastrī rātreḥ, trirdivasasya buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokayanti, evaṃ mahāśrāvakā api; adrākṣīdāyuṣmān śāriputraḥ upālinaṃ kalpakamatīva saṃvignam; dṛṣṭvā ca punaryenopālī kalpakastenopasaṅkrāntaḥ; upasaṅkramya upālinaṃ kalpakamidamavocat: kasmāttvamupālinatīva saṃvignaḥ kare kapolaṃ datvā cintāparastiṣṭhasīti; sa kathayati: kathamahaṃ bhadanta śāriputra na cintāparo bhavāmi yatredānīmamī kumārāḥ kulavibhavayauvanopetāḥ sphītānyantaḥpurāṇi sphītāni ca kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇyapāsya pravrajitāḥ; ahamasminnalaṅkāramātre sakto'nayena vyasanamāpatsye? yadyahaṃ na nīcakulotpannaḥ syāmahamapi svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajya udyujyeyaṃ, ghaṭeyaṃ, (206) vyāyaccheyamoghānāmuttaraṇāya, yogānāṃ samatikramaṇāyeti; āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ kathayati: bhadramukha nedaṃ munīndrapravacanaṃ jātisārakaṃ, na gotrasārakaṃ, na śrutasārakam; api tu pratipattisārakamidaṃ munīndrapravacanam; (a 423 ) na jātikulagotrāṇi parīkṣante tathāgatāḥ; karmāṇi tu parīkṣante cirakālakṛtānyapi; sacedākāṅkṣasi svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasaṃpadāṃ bhikṣubhāvam, ehi bhagavatsakāśaṃ gacchāva; pravrājayiṣyati te bhagavāniti; tenādhivāsitam
