Chapter 96 - Conversion of Nandā and Nandabalā

atha bhagavāṃstasyā eva rātryā atyayātpūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya senāyanīgrāmakaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat; atha bhagavata etadabhavat: kasya nvahaṃ senāyanīgrāmake tatprathamato dharmaṃ deśayeyam; atha bhagavata etadabhavat: yanvahaṃ nandāyāśca nandabalāyāśca (a 397 ) grāmikaduhitroḥ tatprathamato dharmaṃ deśayeyaṃ, ye māṃ duḥkhaprahāṇayogamanuyuktaṃ viharantaṃ satkṛtyopasthatuḥ premnā ca gauraveṇa ca; atha bhagavān yena nandāyāśca nandabalāyāśca grāmikaduhitrorniveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrantaḥ; adrāṣṭāṃ ca nandā ca nandabalā ca grāmikaduhitarau (153) bhagavantaṃ dūrata eva; dṛṣṭvā ca punarbhagavato'rthāyāsanaṃ prajñapayataḥ evaṃ cāhatuḥ: niṣīdatu bhagavān prajnāpta evāsane; nyaṣīdadbhagavān prajñāpta evāsane; atha nandā ca nandabalā ca grāmikaduhitarau bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvaikānte niṣaṇṇe; ekāntaniṣaṇṇe nandāṃ ca nandabalāṃ ca grāmikaduhitarau bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati yāsau buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ pūrvakālakaraṇīyā dharmī kathā tadyathā dānakathā śīlakathā svargakathā kāmānāmāsvādādīnavasaṃkleśavyavadānanaiṣkramyapraviveke anuśaṃsavyavadānapakṣyān dharmān vistareṇa saṃprakāśayati; yadaite bhagavānadrākṣīddhṛṣṭacitte kalyacitte muditacitte vinivaraṇacitte bhavye pratibale sāmutkarṣikīṃ dharmadeśanāmājñātuṃ tadā yāsau buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ sāmutkarṣikī dharmadeśanā tadyathā duḥkhaṃ samudayo nirodho mārgaścatvāryāryasatyāni vistareṇa saṃprakāśayati; tadyathā śuddhaṃ vastramapagatakālakaṃ rañjanopagaṃ raṅge prakṣiptaṃ samyageva raṅgaṃ pratigṛhṇāti, evameva nandā ca nandabalā ca tasminnevāsane niṣaṇṇe catvaryāryasatyāni abhisamayatastadyathā duḥkhaṃ samudayaṃ nirodhaṃ mārgam; atha nandā ca nandabalā ca grāmikaduhitarau dṛṣṭadharme prāptadharme paryavagādhadharme tīrṇakāṃkṣe tīrṇavicikitse'parapratyaye'nanyaneye śāstuḥ śāsane dharmeṣu vaiśāradyaprāpte; utthāyāsanādekāṃśamuttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃstenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantamidamavocatām: abhikrānte āvāṃ bhadantābhikrānte; ete āvāṃ bhagavantaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāvo dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṅghaṃ ca; upāsike cāvāṃ dhārayādyāgreṇa yāvajjīvaṃ prāṇopete śaraṇagate'bhiprasanne; atha nandā ca nandabalā ca grāmikaduhitarau bhagavantamidamavocatām; tena hi bhadanta ihaiva bhaktakṛtyaṃ kriyatām; adhivāsayati bhagavānnandāyāśca nandabalāyāśca grāmikaduhitroḥ tūṣnīṃbhāvena; atha nandā ca nandabalā ca grāmikaduhitarau bhagavatastūṣṇīmbhāvenādhivāsanāṃ viditvā sukhopaniṣaṇṇaṃ bhagavantaṃ viditvā śucinā praṇītena khādanīyabhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpayataḥ saṃpravārayataḥ; śucinā praṇītena khādanīyabhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpayitvā saṃpravārayitvā bhagavantaṃ bhuktavantaṃ viditvā dhautahastamapanītapātraṃ nīcatarakamāsanaṃ gṛhītvā bhagavataḥ pūrato niṣaṇṇe dharmaśravaṇāya (154)
