Chapter 69 - Rāhula and Ānanda

yatśrutvā rājā śuddhodanaḥ saparivāraḥ kapilavāstavaśca janakāyaḥ paraṃ harṣamupāgatāḥ; anuttarajñānādhigame ca bhagavataḥ yaśodharāyaḥ putro jātaḥ; amṛtodanasya ca putro jātaḥ; rāhuṇā candro grastaḥ; atha rājā śuddhodanaḥ tāṃ saṃpattiṃ dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭatuṣṭapramudita udagraprītisaumanasyajātaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ; tena kapilavastunagaramapagatapāṣaṇaśarkarakaṭhallaṃ vyavasthāpitam, candanavāripariṣiktaṃ surabhidhūpasphaṭikopanibaddhamāmuktapaṭṭadāmakalāpamucchṛtadhvajapatākaṃ nānāpuṣpāvakīrṇaṃ ramaṇīyam; (119) caturṣu nagaradvāreṣu dānaśālā māpitā madhye ca śṛṇgāṭakasya; tataḥ pūrvanagaradvāre śramaṇabrāhmaṇacarakaparivrājakādīnavānāthakṛpaṇavanīpakayācanakebhyo dānāni dattāni; dakṣiṇe paścime uttare madhye śṛṅgāṭakasya (a 387 ) dānāni dīyante; puṇyāṇi kriyante; yaśodharāyāḥ putrasya nāma vyavasthāpyate; antaḥpurajanaḥ kathayati: asya janmani rāhuṇā candro grastaḥ; tasmādbhavatu dārakasya rāhula iti nāmeti; amṛtodanasyāpi tathaiva dānāni datvā puṇyāni kṛtvā putrasya nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate; kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti: jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmādasya janmani sarvaṃ nagaramānanditaṃ, tasmādbhavatu dārakasya ānanda iti nāmeti; rājā śuddhodanaḥ kathayati: yo'yaṃ yaśodharāyāḥ putro jātaḥ naiṣa śākyamuneḥ putraḥ; iti śrutvā yaśodharā vyathitā; tatastayā bodhisatvasya vyāyāmaśilāyāmāropya krīḍāpuṣkariṇyāstīre sthitayā satyopayācanaṃ kṛtam: yadyayaṃ bodhisatvena jātastathāsyāṃ puṣkariṇyāṃ saha śilayā plaveta; no cennimajjeta; ityuktvā udake prakṣiptaḥ; sa tūlapicuvatsaha śilayā plavitumārabdhaḥ; rājā śuddhodanastadatyadbhutaṃ <śrutvā> mahājanakāyaparivṛto bodhisatvasya kriḍāpuṣkariṇīgato yāvatpaśyati rāhulabhadraṃ bodhisatvasya śilāyāṃ niṣaṇṇaṃ tūlapicuvadudake plavamānam; dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ hṛṣṭatuṣṭapramudita udagraprītisaumanasyajātaḥ sahasā puṣkariṇīmavatīrya rāhulabradraṃ kumāramaṃśenādāya vyutthitaḥ
yadā bhagavatā ṣaṭtriṃśadbhūtakoṭiparivāraṃ māraṃ maitreṇāstreṇābhinirjitya anuttaraṃ jñānamadhigatam, atyarthaṃ tasmin samaye mahāpṛthivīcālo'bhūt; sarvaścāyaṃ loka udāreṇāvabhāsena sphuṭo'bhūt; api lokasya lokāntarikā andhāstamaso'ndhakāratamisrā yatremau sūryācandramasāvevaṃmahardhikāvevaṃmahānubhāvāvābhayā ābhāṃ na pratyanubhavataḥ, api tasmin samaye udāreṇāvabhāsena sphuṭā abhūvan; tatra ye satvā upapannās<te svakamapi bāhuṃ pragṛhītaṃ na paśyanti>; te tayā ābhayā (121) anyonyaṃ satvān dṛṣṭvā saṃjānate; anye'pīha bhavantaḥ satvā upapannā anye'pīha bhavantaḥ satvā upapannā iti; antaroddānam:

cātuṣparṣikaṃ daharaḥ pitāputrasamāgamaḥ |
śākyānāṃ caiva pravrajyā gaṅgāpāla namo'stu te ||
