Chapter 37 - Sight of a deceased-man

dharmatā khalu yadā bodhisatva udyānabhūmiṃ nirgantukāmo bhavati tadā sārathimāmantrayate: aṅga tāvatsārathe kṣipraṃ bhadraṃ yānaṃ yojaya; yatrāhamabhiruhyodyānabhūmiṃ niryāsyāmi iti; tato bodhisatvaḥ sārathimāmantrayate: aṅga tāvatsārathe kṣipraṃ bhadraṃ yānaṃ yojaya, yatrābhiruhyodyānabhūmiṃ gacchāmi; evaṃ deveti sārathiḥ śākyamunerbodhisatvasya pratiśrutya kṣipraṃ bhadraṃ yānaṃ yojayitvā yena śākyamunirbodhisatvastenopasaṅkrāntaḥ: upasaṅkramya śākyamuniṃ bodhisatvamidamavocat: yuktaṃ devasya bhadraṃ yānaṃ yasyedānīṃ devaḥ kālaṃ manyata iti; atha śākyamunirbodhisatvo bhadraṃ yānamabhiruhya udyānabhūmiṃ nirgataḥ; adrākṣīcchākyamunirbodhisatva udyānabhūmiṃ nirgacchannānāraṅgairvastraiścailavitānaṃ vitataṃ, śibikāṃ ca pragṛhītām, ulkāṃ ca purastānnīyamānāṃ, mahājanakāyaṃ ca purastādgacchantaṃ, nārībhiḥ prakīrṇakeśābhiḥ rudantībhiḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddham; dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ sārathimāmantrayate: kimetatsārathe nānāraṅgairvastraiścailavitānaṃ vitatam? śibikā ca pragṛhītā? ulkā ca purastānnīyate? mahājanakāyaśca purastādgacchati? nāryaśca prakīrṇakeśyo rudantyaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhā? iti; deva eṣa mṛto nāma; ka eṣa sārathe mṛto nāma? eṣa deva puruṣo na bhūyaḥ priyaṃ mātāpitaraṃ drakṣyati; na putradāraṃ; dāsīdāsakarmakarapauruṣeyaṃ; te'pyenaṃ na bhūyo drakṣyanti; sa eṣa deva mṛto nāma; ahamapi sārathe maraṇadharmā maraṇadharmatāṃ cānatītaḥ? (a 371 ) devo'pi maraṇadharmā maraṇadharmatāṃ cānatītaḥ; sa evamāha: tena hi sārathe pratinivartaya ratham; antaḥpurameva gaccha; yadahaṃ (71) antaḥpuramadhyagata etamarthaṃ cintayiṣyāmi, maraṇaṃ kilāhamavyativṛtta iti; pratinivartayati sārathī ratham; antaḥpurameva yāti; tatra svicchākyamunirbodhisatvo'ntaḥpuramadhyagataḥ apratītaḥ karuṇāni dhyāyati, maraṇaṃ kilāhamavyativṛtta iti; āha cātra
puruṣaṃ dṛṣṭvā vyapayātacetasaṃ
mṛtaṃ visaṃjñaṃ gatamāyuṣaḥ kṣayāt |
athāpratītaḥ karuṇāni dhyāyati
mṛtyuṃ kilāsmyavyativṛtta ityasau ||
atha rājā śuddhodanaḥ sārathimāmantrayate: kaccitsārathe kumāra āttamanāttamanā udyānabhūmiṃ nirgata abhirato udyāne? no deva; tatkasya hetoḥ? adrākṣīddeva kumāra udyānabhūmiṃ nirgacchannānāraṅgairvastraiścailavitānaṃ vitatam; śibikāṃ ca gṛhītām; ulkāṃ ca purastānnīyamānām; mahājanakāyaṃ ca purastādgacchantaṃ; nārīśca prakīrṇakeśā rudatīḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhāḥ; dṛṣṭvā ca punarmāmāmantrayate: kimetatsārathe nānāraṅgairvastraiścailavitānaṃ vitatam? śibikā ca pragṛhītā? ulkā ca purastānnīyate? mahājanakāyaśca purastādgacchati? nāryaśca prakīrṇakeśyo rudantyaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhā? iti; tamenamevaṃ vadāmi: eṣa deva mṛto nāmeti; sa evamāha; ka eṣa sārathe mṛto nāmeti; tamenamevaṃ vadāmi: (72) eṣa deva puruṣo na bhūyaḥ priyaṃ mātāpitaraṃ drakṣyati; na putradāraṃ; na dāsīdāsakarmakarapauruṣeyam; te'pyenaṃ na bhūyo drakṣyanti; sa eṣa deva mṛto nāmeti; sa evamāha: ahamapi sārathe maraṇadharmā? maraṇadharmatāṃ cānatītaḥ? iti; tamenamevaṃ vadāmi; devo'pi maraṇadharmā maraṇadharmatāṃ cānatīta iti; sa evamāha; tena hi sārathe pratinivartaya ratham; antaḥpurameva gaccha; yadahamantaḥpuramadhyagata etamarthaṃ cintayiṣyāmi, maraṇaṃ kilāhamavyativṛtta iti; sa eṣa deva kumāro'ntaḥpuramadhyagataḥ; athāpratītaḥ karuṇāni dhyāyati, maraṇaṃ kilāhamavyativṛtta iti
atha rājñaḥ śuddhodanasyaitadabhavat: haiva teṣāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ naimittikānāṃ vipañcanakānāṃ vacanaṃ bhūtaṃ satyaṃ bhaviṣyati; haiva kumāraḥ keśaśmaśrvavatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇyācchādya samyageva śraddhayā agārādanagārikāṃ pravrajiṣyati; yanvahaṃ kumārasya bhūyasyā mātrayā pañcakāmaguṇānanupradadyām; apyevābhirato na pravrajediti; atha rājā śuddhodanaḥ śākyamunerbodhisatvasya pañcakāmaguṇānanuprayacchati; apyevābhirato na pravrajediti; āha cātra
purottame śrīmati tatra ramye
devātidevo daharaḥ samānaḥ |
saṃmodate kāmaguṇairhi pañcabhiḥ
sahasranetra iva nandane vane ||
