Chapter 34 - Sight of am old man

dharmatā khalu yadā bodhisatva udyānabhūmiṃ nirgantukāmo bhavati tadā sārathimāmantrayate: aṅga tāvatsārathe kṣipraṃ bhadraṃ yānaṃ yojaya yatrāhamabhiruhyodyānabhūmiṃ niryāsyāmi <iti; tato bodhisatvaḥ sārathimāmantrayate: aṅga tāvatsārathe kṣipraṃ bhadraṃ yānaṃ yojaya yatrābhiruhyodyānabhūmiṃ gacchāmi;> evaṃ deveti sārathiḥ śākyamunerbodhisatvasya pratiśrutya bhadraṃ yānaṃ yojayitvā yena śākyamunirbodhisatvastenopasaṅkrāntaḥ; upasaṅkramya śākyamuniṃ bodhisatvamidamavocat: yuktaṃ devasya bhadraṃ yānaṃ, yasyedānīṃ devaḥ kālaṃ manyate; atha śākyamunirbodhisatvo bhadraṃ yānamabhiruhya udyānabhūmiṃ nirgataḥ; adrākṣīcchākyamunirbodhisatvaḥ puruṣaṃ jīrṇaṃ vṛddhaṃ mahallakaṃ <kubjaṃ> gopānasīvāṅkaṃ daṇḍamavaṣṭabhya purataḥ pravepamānena kāyena gacchantaṃ; keśāścāsya vivarṇā, na yathānyeṣāṃ puruṣāṇāṃ; dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ sārathimāmantrayate: ka eṣa sārathe puruṣaḥ? jīrṇo (a 369 ) vṛddho mahallakaḥ kubjo gapānasīvaṅko daṇḍamavaṣṭabhya purataḥ pravepamānena kāyena gacchati; keśāścāsya na yathānyeṣāṃ puruṣāṇām; eṣa, deva, puruṣo jīrṇo nāma; ka eṣa sārathe jīrṇo nāma?; anena, deva, puruṣeṇa na cirādeva martavyaṃ bhaviṣyati; sa eṣa jīrno nāma; ahamapi sārathe jarādharmā, jarādharmatāṃ cānatītaḥ? devo'pi jarādharmā jarādharmatāṃ cānatītaḥ; tena hi sārathe pratinivartaya (66) ratham; antaḥpurameva gaccha; yadahamantaḥpuramadhyagata etamarthaṃ cintayiṣyāmīti; jarāṃ kilāhamavyativṛtta iti; pratinivartayati sārathī ratham; antaḥpurameva yāti; tatra svicchākyamunirbodhisatvo'ntaḥpuramadhyagataḥ; athāpratītaḥ karuṇāni dhyāyati, jarāṃ kilāhamavyativṛtta iti; āha cātra
puruṣaṃ hi dṛṣṭvā samatītayauvanaṃ
jīrṇaṃ kubjaṃ palitaṃ daṇḍapāṇim |
athāpratītaḥ karuṇāni dhyāyati
jarāṃ kilāsmyavyativṛtta ityasau || iti ||
atha rājā śuddhodanaḥ sārathimāmantrayate: kaccitsārathe kumāra āttamanāttamanā udyānabhūmiṃ nirgata abhirato udyāne?; no deva: tatkasya hetoḥ? adrākṣīddeva kumāra udyānabhūmiṃ nirgacchan puruṣaṃ jīrṇaṃ vṛddhaṃ mahallakaṃ kubjaṃ gopānasīvaṅkaṃ daṇḍamavaṣṭabhya purataḥ pravepamānena kāyena gacchantam; keśāścāsya vivarṇā; na yathānyeṣāṃ puruṣāṇām; dṛṣṭvā ca punarmāmidamavocat: ka eṣa sārathe puruṣo jīrṇo vṛddho mahallakaḥ kubjo gopānasīvaṅko daṇḍamavaṣṭabhya purataḥ pravepamānena kāyena gacchati; keśāścāsya vivarṇā na yathānyeṣāṃ puruṣāṇāmiti; tamenamevaṃ vadāmi; eṣa deva jīrṇo nāmeti; sa evamāha; ka eṣa sārathe jīrṇo nāmeti; tamenamevaṃ vadāmi: anena deva, puruṣeṇa na cirānmartavyaṃ bhaviṣyati; sa eṣa jīrṇo nāmeti; sa evamāha: ahamapi sārathe jarādharmā, jarādharmatāṃ cānatīta iti; tamenamevaṃ vadāmi: devo'pi jarādharmā, jarādharmatāṃ cānatīta iti; sa evamāha: tena hi sārathe pratinivartaya ratham; antaḥpurameva gaccha; yadahamantaḥpuramadhyagata etamarthaṃ cintayāmi, jarāṃ kilāham (67) avyativṛtta iti; sa eṣa deva kumāro'ntaḥpuramadhyagataḥ; athāpratītaḥ karuṇāni dhyāyati, jarāṃ kilāhamavyativṛtta iti
