Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 112.77

adyaiva pravrajiṣyāmi ko jāne maraṇaṃ śuve |
na hi na saṃgataṃ tena mahāsainyena mṛtyunā |
māhaṃ kāko va durmedho kāmānāṃ vaśam anvagā || 77 ||

This very day I will go forth to the religious life, lest like the witless crow I become the slave of my desires. Who knows but that tomorrow I shall be dead? For there has to be a meeting with Death and his mighty host. (77)
