by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 112.28

इत्य् एते अष्ट महानरका आख्याता दुरतिक्रमा ।
आकीर्णा रौद्रसत्वेहि प्रत्येकं षोडशोत्सदा ॥ २८ ॥

ity ete aṣṭa mahānarakā ākhyātā duratikramā |
ākīrṇā raudrasatvehi pratyekaṃ ṣoḍaśotsadā || 28 ||

So are those eight great hells called. Hard to get through are they, being full of frightful creatures. Each has a subsidiary hell. (28)
