by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 112.19

नित्यं खलु तेषां भद्रं येषां कीर्तेसि श्रोणक ।
वयन् तु गृद्धा कामेषु किं करिष्यामि श्रोणक ॥ १९ ॥

nityaṃ khalu teṣāṃ bhadraṃ yeṣāṃ kīrtesi śroṇaka |
vayan tu gṛddhā kāmeṣu kiṃ kariṣyāmi śroṇaka || 19 ||

Lasting, O Shronaka, is this blessing of theirs that you praise. But as for me, I am greedy for sensual pleasures. What am I to do, O Shronaka? (19)
