Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 111.25

मोहं नो जुहितो अग्नि मोहं मे सो तपो कृतो ।
यं जहे पश्चिमे काले जीर्णां व उरगो त्वचं ॥ २५ ॥

mohaṃ no juhito agni mohaṃ me so tapo kṛto |
yaṃ jahe paścime kāle jīrṇāṃ va urago tvacaṃ || 25 ||

Yea, in vain did I offer the fire-sacrifice; in vain did I make my penance, since at the last I abandoned them as a snake its cast-off skin. (25)
