Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 108.27

चक्षुषा संवरो साधु साधु श्रोत्रेण संवरः ।
घ्राणेन संवरो साधु साधु जिह्वाय संवरो ॥ २७ ॥

cakṣuṣā saṃvaro sādhu sādhu śrotreṇa saṃvaraḥ |
ghrāṇena saṃvaro sādhu sādhu jihvāya saṃvaro || 27 ||

Restraint in eye is good, and good restraint in ear. Restraint in smell is good, and good restraint in tongue. (27)
