Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 108.14

सिंच भिक्षु इमां नावां उपेक्षाये सिक्ता ते लघु भेष्यति ।
छित्त्वा रागं च दोषं च ततो निर्वाणम् एष्यसि ॥ १४ ॥

siṃca bhikṣu imāṃ nāvāṃ upekṣāye siktā te laghu bheṣyati |
chittvā rāgaṃ ca doṣaṃ ca tato nirvāṇam eṣyasi || 14 ||

Besprinkle this boat, O monk. Besprinkled with equanimity, it will float more lightly for you. Cut out passion and ill-will. Thus will you go or to nirvana. (14)
