This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

याचनां रोदनम् आहु अदानं प्रतिरोदनं ।
तस्माद् भवन्तं न याचामि मा मे आरोदनं भवेत् ॥ ४ ॥

yācanāṃ rodanam āhu adānaṃ pratirodanaṃ |
tasmād bhavantaṃ na yācāmi mā me ārodanaṃ bhavet || 4 ||

They say that begging leads to weeping; refusal to give likewise causes weeping. And so I beg not of you, my lord, lest I be the cause of weeping. (4)
