Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 108.2

याचेन्तो अप्रियो भवति अदेन्तो भवति अप्रियो ।
तस्माद् भवन्तं न याचामि मा मे विद्वेषणा भवेत् ॥ २ ॥

yācento apriyo bhavati adento bhavati apriyo |
tasmād bhavantaṃ na yācāmi mā me vidveṣaṇā bhavet || 2 ||

He who begs becomes disliked; he who gives not becomes disliked. And so I ask not of my lord, lest I incur hatred. (2)
