Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 107.5

नन्दति पुत्रेहि पुत्रिमां गोमिको गोहि तथैव नन्दति ।
उपधीहि नन्दति जनो न हि सो नन्दति यो निरुपधि ॥ ५ ॥

nandati putrehi putrimāṃ gomiko gohi tathaiva nandati |
upadhīhi nandati jano na hi so nandati yo nirupadhi || 5 ||

He who has sons delights in his sons; the cowherd delights in his cattle. Man delights in attachments, but he who has no attachments has naught to delight in. (5)
